    El Gran was Paul London

You mean like Col Debeers and Terry Funk? Or Baron Von Raschke (who continued to goose step even after becoming a face)? It's been done before, it'll be done again. Doesn't make it right, but don't act like it's unheard of.

    Memorable sports fights

Boston Bruins vs. Rangers fans, with Milbury pummeling the fan with his own shoe. John Wensink challenging the entire North Stars bench to a figh, and having none of them step up (ok, not technically a fight, but it should have been a fight if the Stars had been tough enough to respond). The Habs and Flyers having a 20 minute fight BEFORE the game because that idiot Lemieux made a practice of shooting into the other team's empty net before the game. Speaking of Lemieux ... Neely literally lifting him up and smacking him head first into the corner boards of the Garden. And, it's probably only memorable to me, but Kenny Belanger getting game misconducts in the first period of his first two games as a Bruin. Total ice time was probably 3 minutes in the two games (combined). And, YNA, you can trade for or buy that game on most of the hockey fights pages. It's one of the more common ones, because of the TV coverage that it'd gotten.

Former Cardnial Pat Tillman killed in combat

I was actually coming here to post this when I saw that it had already been posted. Let me be the first to say how tragic of a loss this is. Tillman gave up a life that 99% of us can only dream about to go and fight and defend the country that he loved. I don't think that I'm even half as brave as Pat Tillman, and consider myself lucky to have been able to see him play. When I have kids, and want to teach them about doing what's right - compared to just doing what's fun - people like Tillman will make that distinction much easier.

The 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread

I'm rooting for the Flames for 2 reasons, the first being that I'm hoping for SJ to make it to the Cup and beating Calgary should be easier than beating Detroit. And the second is that I think both Toronto and Montreal are making tee times after this round, and it'd suck for Canada to have all 3 of their remaining teams get eliminated before the Conference Finals.

Jacques Martin fired as Senators coach

Hire Quenneville before the Leafs get the chance. I'd say hire Maurice, but I want him to come to Boston. Maybe you can have Sullivan when the Bruins fire him. (And they BETTER fire him)

The Whiney Little Bitch Family AKA the Mannings

I'm a pretty cynical guy, so when people say that Eli is doing this because his old man got so beaten up playing behind a weak O-Line in NO, I smell bullshit. If it's only a matter of playing with a stronger O-Line, then why is NY the only team that they're willing to go? Why not any of the other teams that have legitimate lines and legitimate quarterback concerns? It can't just be because NY is the media capital of the world, can it? And heaven forbid both Mannings get wasted in smaller markets. More press coverage = more money.

    Another Ric Flair interview

I think that my view on the 'real name' debate can be broken down like this ... when we're talking about the person behind the character (e.g. Steve Williams beating his wife) it's fine to use a real name. If Shawn Michaels gets hit by lightning tonight, I'd have no issue with people using either his stage or birth name to talk about what happened. But when people are talking about them as wrestlers, it only makes sense to use their character's name. To use the Sopranos anaology, if Tony Soprano has a scene in which he kills Michael in an emotionally wrenching scene, no one would say "wow, Gandolfini really flipped out when he killed Imperioli" (or whatever the last name of the guy that plays Michael is). There's a time to refer to the character and a time to refer to the actor.

    Another Ric Flair interview

I still stick with my analogy ... just because Kane's mother probably calls him "Glen" doesn't mean you should. And, I presume that Nikki Sixx's mother calls him _____ (whatever his real name is). Fans probably call him by his stage name, and people that know him and are friends of his probably call him by his real name.

    Another Ric Flair interview

vivisectvi, you're comparing apples to oranges. A more accurate example would be movie stars or musicians that go by a stage name. Would you call Nikki Sixx his birthname, or his stage name? Or Gene Simmons, or Axl Rose? Or Jenna Jameson (sorry, I'm really stretching to find a movie star that goes by a stage name). Or, to a lesser extent, Tiger Woods or Bo Jackson? My point is that these people have a name that they are commonly known as, why call them something else? If you don't want to give Flair money, or anyone else for that matter, don't. It's just the false sense of importance shown by so many smarks is nauseating.

    Another Ric Flair interview

It's funny how angry everyone is getting because he's not suckling on the teat of the internet. The WWE would do fine if the 'net went away, or if all the smarks took their toys and went home. Smarks are the minority, and Vince would still be able to feed his family if the internet magically disappeared. I can kind of understand Flair's frustration with people using insider terminology. Heel/face isn't too bad, but when people talk about "doing the job" or "showing some ass" and stupid shit like that, it's a bit over-the-top. Or referring to the wrestlers by their actual names.

    NHL Award Nominees Been Announced

Hart Trophy Martin St. Louis (TB) - No one else is even close, is the main reason that the Bolts finished 1st in the East and 2nd overall. Norris Trophy Scott Niedermayer (NJD) - Tough to overlook Chara, but I think that Nieds had the better defensive season (although not all the stats might support that) and that's enough for me. Vezina Trophy Roberto Luongo (FLA) - Kippy didn't play enough (missing 6 weeks b/c the injury) because otherwise, the trophy would be his. Luongo played amazing considering the swiss cheese that was playing in front of him. Calder Trophy Andrew Raycroft (BOS) - Razor deserved Hart & Vezina consideration, IMHO, as his numbers were comparable to Theodore's from 2 years ago. But the Calder will have to do ... for now. Frank J. Selke Trophy Alyn McCauley (SAN) - Very good +/- ... plus, I hate Madden so much I could never vote for him. Lady Byng Memorial Martin St. Louis (TB) - I personally think that Richards should win, but MSL will win. Jack Adams Trophy Ron Wilson (SAN) - Took a team that wasn't that different from last year's squad, and brought them to 2nd in the West, 3rd in the league, without having someone like St Louis on the team to help propel them.

Need a QB? Kurt Warner's Available

I'd have a hard time saying the Pats wideouts are more than > better than the Eagles. Anytime Troy Brown is your #1 wideout, you're not looking at a really fearsome receiving corps. Branch can fly, but is unproven and not a great receiver by any stretch of the imagination. Bethel Johnson, other than being one of the fastest guys in the league, is nothing special (yet). David Givens, good but not great. And to say that a 2 time Super Bowl MVP is overrated is stupid. The fact that he didn't even finish in the top 3 for regular season MVP voting (even though his team was undefeated in months) shows that he's not overrated.

    This Week In Baseball

Considering 15 teams averaged more than 90%, I'm not overly impressed with 86%. And I'm actually willing to wager that it's really 17 teams that are above 90%, as I'm presuming that the 0.00s for Philly and Edmonton are mistakes and both those teams draw well historically. Trust me, I wish the B's were more popular in Boston. I love hockey even more than I dislike baseball, and so wish that I was alive in the early 70s when the B's were one of the teams that dominated the local sports scene.

The 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread

Souray can play a reasonably physical game. If you count cheap shots with a stick, Sac-less Koivu would have to be considered as well.

    This Week In Baseball

Are you serious?? The B's average attendance was about 86% of capacity this year, and for a team that finished with the 4th most points in hockey that's embarressing. The only teams that had less capacity than us were the also-rans of the league (Pittsburgh, Washington, Carolina, etc.) Not even the post-season games sell out. Until either the Celtics or Bruins win a Cup, their attendance will be dwarfed (per capacity) by both the Red Sox and Pats. On an unrelated note, has anyone in the Boston area seen today's Herald? Allegedly there's a picture of Schilling wearing a Yankees cap at the B's game the other night. I haven't seen it yet, but LB and the guys on AAF were freaking out about it this morning while I was driving into work.

    Underrated comedic actors

I found myself laughing out loud while watching Tommy Davidson in those Pizza Hut P'Zone commercials. Just not when it was supposed to be funny. I guess I only laughed at the thought of him sobbing in his trailer when he realized that even one of the Fly Girls, let alone half of the actual cast, had a better post-ILC career.

    Columbine: 5 Years Later

Wait, are people saying that Columbine gets more press and attention because it was done by white kids??? What about the countless other school shooting done by whites that get next to no attention now? Do those not count. Due to the intended casualties, and media fallout, Columbine was going to become the most infamous shooting, regardless of the color(s) involved. If it had been 2 black kids plotting the massacre of a predominantly black school in this same manner, it'd be every bit as infamous now. To compare it to a gang-related one-off is comparing apples to oranges.

What is the last thing you spent money on?

The very last thing was $5.00 for a couple of Miller High Life's (The Champagne of Beers), which was the end of a 3 bar spree whie out with friends last night.

"We Built This City" voted Worst Song Ever

Even without looking at the current Billboard top 50, I can safely say that I'd prefer to listen to the songs on that "worst song ever" list than the current top 50. While there are indeed some songs that are nauseating on that list (Will Smith, Whitney Houston, Gerardo) there are most assuredly more shit songs out right here and now.

    Columbine: 5 Years Later

So, one of the Columbine killers was enough of a 2-Pac fan that he got upset when people mispronounced his name? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ... ha ha ha ha ha.

    Will Fox Silence "The Simpsons"?

That's like saying relief pitchers in baseball should get less money, since they do less work than starters. It's the quality of work, not quantity, and the voices of the Simpsons are what makes the show. The old, more crudely drawn episodes are funnier than the newer ones, so it'd be tough to say the animation is more important than the voices. Writing first, voicing second, animation third.

    Trivia247...

I have no real animosity towards him, but randomly capitalizing words in a sentence gets a bit grating ... check out every example of his work posted in this thread for examples. But if someone's worst feature is randomly capitalizing words, then there's certainly other posters more hate-able.

So I'm going to Boston next week

Yep, the Big Dig is still ongoing. A bunch of the tunnels have opened up already, and while I haven't driven through much, the little that I've used it has been good. Will it be worth the billions of dollars and years of headaches? I doubt it. But when all is said and done, it'll be pretty cool to have parks and open space where there's been highways my entire life. And mark my words, other cities will steal the idea and build their own underground roadways.

    Will Fox Silence "The Simpsons"?

The Simpsons passed O&H just recently (Spring of 2004) ... The Simpsons are now credited w/15 years, so it's just passing the previous record of 14 years. The Simpsons are 4th in terms of # of episodes, though ... http://homepage.smc.edu/nestler_andrew/sitcoms.htm

The 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread

Well, I picked 5 of the 7 winners in round one (I couldn't choose a winner in TO/OTT, but I picked the # of games and said it all depended on Belfour-vs-Lalime, so I was partially right). Of course, the one that I really cared about is one of the ones that i got wrong. And, sorry to say it Leafs fans, but I couldn't have asked for 4 teams that I more root against to be playing in round 2. The only other team that I hate as much as those 4 is the Rangers, but the NYR and the playoffs don't exist in the same universe. There's a legitimate chance that I'm not going to watch a single Eastern conference game this round. Round 2 Predictions: Tampa Bay vs Montreal - The Habs beat the B's because of questionable coaching and the fact that they were able to outrace the B's to the puck every time. Neither of these advantages will be there this round. Plus, the Bhulin Wall is on fire right now, and will even out the goalie advantage. Tampa in 6. Philly vs. Toronto - Toronto needs to get healthy to compete with Philly, and if Nolan and Sundin don't make it back, they're sunk. Philly in 6. Detroit vs. Calgary - I really think that Detroit is too strong for the scrappy Flames, and their big-guns are due to get hot. Detroit in 5. San Jose vs. Colorado - On paper, it's a mismatch in Colorado's favor. On the ice, though, I don't think that SJ can lose this series. Don't ask me why, it's just a gut feeling. San Jose in 7.
