Benoit is 'just a transitional champion'...
nl5xsk1 replied to Use Your Illusion's topic in The WWE Folder
No, I mean him making the then-champion Brock Lesnar tap at Survivor Series ... having he and Brock put on a hell of a match last winter ... earning a spot in the Rumble ... breaking all previous records in the Royal Rumble and dumping the Big Show to win it ... and then making Triple H tap at WrestleMania. We can gripe and complain about how he was used on Raw prior to Mania but the end result is the same - he has the belt. He could have been booked to be the modern day Virgil for all I care - he still has the belt. Plus, on top of all that cawthon (rightly) pointed out, they also had the end of Mania be Benoit & Guerrero stand in the middle of a confetti shower in the center of the ring. Which they'd probably not do if they had intentions of giving him a one month cup of coffee as champ. -
Before they release the Horsemen DVD, I wish the writing staff would go back and, you know, watch the old footage. Steal some of those ideas for new angles. For example, the way that Luger left the Horsemen (by not giving JJ the win in the Bunkhouse Stampede) would gain major face heat in today's wrestling scene. Some of those old angles would play out so well today.

I'd have to say that oldschool Sportscenter ad where Rob Ray pummels the delivery man for not having ID. It's on the link below, the third one down (or so): http://www.hockey-humor.com/video.htm

I don't think the two goalie system works as well in the postseason as it does in the regular season. When was the last time a team won the Cup without a true #1 netminder? (I was going to say Detroit a few years ago, but I think that either Vernon or Osgood would play most of the playoff minutes, so it wasn't a true two goalie system once they got to the postseason). And until either Roloson or Fernandez wins a few playoff series on their own (not sharing time) I'd have a hard time recognizing either as Cup-caliber goalies. And out of the unproven netminders: Raycroft: should do well, shouldn't really be viewed as a rookie and has played well in big games this year. Kiprusoff: should do well, something about him just gives me the impression that he could hold his own in a tough playoff series. Esche: I'm thinking that he won't do well. My guess is that we'll see Burke the first time that Esche has a bad game or period. Aebischer: should do very well, doesn't have much pressure because of the offensive and defensive strength in front of him Vokoun: won't do well. The same way that Kiprusoff gives me the impression that he'll succeed, Tomas gives me the impression that he won't.

What about those who stick around the league five+ years longer than what they should have (Greztky, Howe, Messier, Lemieux, Francis). Why should the be greats, when they did jack all at the end of their career. I'd put Forsberg probably one of the best players in the game to date, and is everywhere on the ice always out there 110% on every shift. Other than Messier, I really have to disagree with your assessment that Gretzky, Lemiuex, Howe or Francis "did jack" at the end of their careers: Gretzky led the league in assists two of the last 3 years of his career, and averaged more than a point a game until his last year. Lemiuex has averaged about a point a game since he's been back. And Howe and Francis both averaged about 70 points a year in the last 5 years of their career (assuming Francis hangs up the skates this year.) If that's doing jack, I'd love to have the Bruins pick up some other players doing so little. And BwG, I agree that Gretzky and Forsberg play two different styles of play, and thus PF is more likely to get banged up. But what about when you compare Forsberg with other power forwards of this generation? Neither Tkachuk nor Shanahan have missed a lot of playing time, and they play the same style of play that you described. And the other power forwards that have missed a lot of time (say, Neely and Leclair) have had their place on the all-time greats list effected by missing a lot of playing time.

Not to sound like a broken record, but he's lost way too many games lost due to injuries to be considered anywhere near the all-time greats. When he's healthy, he's amazing, but he's just been far too injury prone to be considered among the all time greats. And if people are going to say "what about ignoring his health problems, and only viewing it as when he was healthy" I'd ask them where they put Lindros on the list. If a player misses too much of the prime of his career, it severely hurts his standing. Even look at Orr or Lemieux, how much higher would they be on the all-time greats pantheon if injuries hadn't effected their career? All-time, easily top 50 and potentiall top 25, but not even top 10 in my opinion. (And it's not a coincidence that it's been SWEDISH writers that have comparing him to Gretzky.)

No, I've never seen her live. And I wouldn't be surprised if she did indeed look more petite live. But if TV does add the appearance of weight, it effects her more than the other "divas" in my eyes. It makes me laugh, my comment about Molly in this thread was one of the most positive things that I've ever posted about her, and I still end up on the defensive. In retrospect, I should have realized that using 'big-boned' was asking for trouble (not that I expected that people would presume that I've never seen a girl before, but whatever). Hell, hindsight is always 20/20.

I view any team's goalie as Cup-caliber goalies if they help their team make the playoffs. We've found out the hard way of doubting goalies that they could come back to bite us with spectacular performances and carrying their teams on their backs. Examples: Montreal and Theodore Anaheim and Giguire. And I have a sneaky feeling that another goaltender that'll do this is Flames netminder, Kippy (I can't spell his last name, sue me). Also with McClennan as well, this team has a lot of goalies that are out to prove themselves. I disagree. If a goalie leads his team to the postseason but loses in the first round, then I'd call them playoff-caliber and not Cup-caliber (e.g. Byron Dafoe or Dan Cloutier) If a goalie leads his team to the postseason and does something memorable there (Theodore taking a scrappy 8 seed and leading them to a huge upset over the topseeded Bruins, or Giguere just about carrying the Ducks to Game 7 of the Cup.) then I'd call them Cup-caliber. If a goalie actually wins the Cup, then they've cemented their reputation as a Cup-caliber netminder. What have Khabibulin or Grahame done? Grahame played well in his one game last year, but after watching him flounder in the Boston net for so many years, I'd be unlikely to bet the farm on him winning game 7 of the Cup. Khabibulin has legitimate playoff numbers, but is still under .500 with a GAA of about 2.65. Not the types of numbers that would strike fear in an opponent. I do think that at least one goaltender will rise up this postseason and take the step from playoff-caliber to Cup-caliber. It might be Kiprussof, or Legace, or Raycroft. Someone that hasn't really had much of a chance until this year.

I just don't see St Louis making it through the much more physical postseason without getting banged up. Lecavalier and Richards are good, but not enough to carry the team if St Louis gets banged up or his production slows down. And, until I'm proven wrong, I'm not going to view either Khabibulin or Grahame as Cup-caliber goalies. Tampa: beats NYI but loses in round two to whomever they face.

Big boned? Do you KNOW what a woman looks like? Appearently not.... No, you amazingly pegged me as a 29 year old virgin. Dumbass. I'd originally put in "endomorphic" instead of 'big boned' but couldn't remember if it was endomorphic or ectomorphic that meant above average for weight, so I changed it to big boned. Because, believe it or not, Molly is not a thin woman. Her ass is bulky, as are her upper thighs. She's not obese, nor is she fat, but she is a bit big. People can sprout off on how she's 'normal' looking, but that's merely an indictment on how overweight American society has become. Does everyone need to be painfully thin? No. But me personally, I wouldn't date someone that had a body-type like Molly does. I've dated my share of girls, and gotten laid more than enough times, and none of the girls that I've been with have had a body like hers.

Am I the only one that thinks that the Lightning - regardless of how unbelievably hot they're playing right now - have no shot of winning the Cup? I don't know what it is, but other than the Islanders, I really think that every other team in the East has a better chance of winning it all than Tampa does.

Question for the people that think that the first Raw post-WM should have huge numbers compared to previous weeks: who exactly do you guys think will start watching? Is there a massive number of wrestling fans who say to themselves "I don't like the way that the WWE is going now, but I'm sure after WrestleMania it'll be better. I'll just tune in then." To have any increase in the first Raw after Mania is good, and if it goes up again next week and the week after, even better. Baby steps, Dr Leo Marvin.

Facially, I truly find bald Molly more attractive than I ever did 'normal' Molly. She's still a bit big-boned for me, but from the neck-up I thought that she looked better than ever on Monday.

I thought the same thing ... either they're planning on keeping the belt around his waist for a while, or he's going to be in the title mix for a while. Otherwise, that shirt'll look stupid.

My pet peeve du jour is comparable with people being idiots in crowded stores ... my biggest annoyance lately is when you're in a store (especially a grocery store, b/c of the carts) and you're obviously stepping back or aside so someone else has the right of way, and they don't fucking acknowledge that you just created that space for them. Or if you hold a door for someone to walk through and they don't acklowledge that ... My response lately has been to say "YOU'RE WELCOME" in a loud, annoyed voice to show them that their lack of a thank you was noted and not appreciated.

So wait...TO was suppose to do more than any athelete does? He pays his agent to handle these things. Its like trying to blame a client for not researching a law that would help them in a case. THEY PAY THEIR LAWYER FOR THAT. In no way was it his fault that the papers didn't get filed, so he has every right to want to be able to get to free agency which he has earned by playing hard and being in the league for enough years to reach this point. No, the agent is the one that's most to blame, but one would think that TO would have asked him every day "why the fuck haven't you submitted the request?". There's absolutely no reason to wait until the last minute, and if I was TO I'd have been on his ass 2 weeks BEFORE the first date that I could opt out and tell him to file immediately. Then, the first day that I could have been freed, I'd have asked him if he did it. And again the next day, and the next day, etc. The agent fucked up, but TO was an enabler that allowed him the breathing room to fuck up.

The B's should have won by much more, too. They hit something like 3 posts, and plus there was the amazing save that Owen Nolan made on a Gonchar rebound. If a couple of those go in, we're looking at a 4-1 game. Did anyone watch the Sportscenter top 10 today? It was like a bizarro-edition, with SEVEN of the 10 highlights being hockey plays. You normally would need to watch a week's worth of top 10's to see 7 hockey highlights.

I guess I'm a day late in posting this, as the thread has segued from being about the Smackdown guys not knowing about the switch to talking about individual wrestlers ... but I really want to comment on the original intent of the thread. Do you have any idea of how the business world works? This kind of stuff happens all the time in the 'real world'. My company's moved offices, changed names, changed policies, hired/fired/moved executives, etc without giving us, the employees, advance notice. Sometimes you hear about it first in a company-wide email, and other times it's not until the press release. The reason for this is simple, to stop people from leaking the information before the company wants it as general knowledge. The people that said how it showed how "fucked up" the WWE is because the boss didn't tell his employees about a major change like this have obviously never worked a real job.

Only on the smarks board would people complain after the fake sport that they like gets a full article on a page that reaches the level of ESPN. Yes, it wasn't the most flattering of reviews, and he didn't lick the sacs of everyone's favorites, but to the average person (e.g. non-wrestling fan) it was a very accurate portrayal of the show. Just be happy that ESPN is allowing him to even talk about wrestling, and move on.
-
I should preface my statement with the admission that I don't frequent this folder all that often, but when I do, all I ever see being discussed are comic books. Does anyone ever talk about non-comic literature? I'm truly not knocking or mocking comics, I just don't read them and was wondering if the threads ever dealt with anything other than comics and graphic novels.

I don't know if anyone hear got to watch yesterday's Bruins-Sabres matinee, but it was as close to an old-school, Adams Division hockey game as I've seen in years. Huge hits, a great fight between Boynton and Kalinin, great saves, and back-to-back odd man rushes in the last 15 seconds of OT, with the game winner coming with less than 4 seconds left. Unbelievably good hockey, yet ESPN would rather focus on shit like the Bertuzzi incident, compared to showing how awesome the sport of hockey really is. And today's playoff matchup update is as follows: EAST Tampa-Isles Philly-Jersey Boston-Montreal Ottawa-Toronto WEST Detroit-St Louis Colorado-Nashville San Jose-Calgary Vancouver-Dallas And I know that I'm biased, but doesn't the Eastern matchups just seem more exciting than the Western ones? With the exception of the TB-NYI matchup, the rest of the East is filled with rivalries; the West has nothing that can compare this year, with maybe Detroit-St Louis being the closest.

You can't be serious. Jersey's nowhere near where they were last year. Philly would beat the snot out of them. I don't know. I'd really rather not have to face Jersey in the playoffs if they're all healthy. They always seem to be especially dangerous when no one's expecting them to do much, and because of their lacklustre season so far, expectations are probably low. The only reason that I'd give the edge to Jersey is because of goaltending. Brodeur can steal a series, whereas I can't see either Esche or Burke singlehandedly carrying the Flyers for too long. More than any season in recent memory, this postseason will be unpredictable, and most of the questions are related to the netminders (e.g. can Belfour stay healthy? Can Theodore play as well as he did 2 postseasons ago? Can Raycroft play as well in the playoffs as he has in the regular season? Will Khabibulin have a better playoffs than he did last year, or will TB need Grahame to come in and save the day? Will Ottawa live to regret not picking up another, more playoff tested goalie?)

Sadly, Jim Kelley always writes about hockey. He just does a really bad job of it. ESPN has among the worst hockey coverage going, as cnnsi and the Sporting News both bring more to the table, and obviously the Hockey News and tsn.ca are the best.

He's an idiot. Of course the majority of these incidents were perpetrated by Canadians...CANADIANS MAKE UP THE MAJORITY OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!!! Dumbass. You said exactly what I was thinking ... that's like saying that American culture is to blame for steroids in baseball (I mean, almost every player accused of being on the roids is American). Such a stupid article, I'm stunned that espn allowed it to go online.
