The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Umm, what last few big suspensions are you talking about that 20 games would be shorter than? An instigator penalty, and the Avs powerplay that would come with it could have proved costly not only in the game but also in the season for the Canucks. Without the instigator rule, the Canucks could have thrown Wade Brookbank over the boards to beat the shit out of Moore. The incident would have ended that night and none of this ugliness would have occured. First of all, screw you for the completely irrelevant comment about Bruins fans "stupidly agree"ing with your statement of suspending Ulfie for life. I'm one of the few Bruins fans that post on this board, & I don't remember me (or anyone else) saying anything along those lines. So to throw that in was stupid and pointless. And regarding the less than 20 games remark, if you re-read what I wrote, it was that the 13 regular season games plus anything less than 7 postseason games would be a suspension lasting for a duration of less than 20 games, which would be less than the 23 that McSorley orginally got, the 23 that Gordie Dwyer got, the 21 that Pierre Turgeon got, and the 20 that Brad May got. The league has set the precedent of at least 20 for an incident like this, so if Bertuzzi got away with only missing 17games (13 regular season plus a 4 game sweep in the playoffs, for example) than it would be less than the recent trend. Lastly, I find your assessment that the 'Nucks sending out Brookbank to "to beat the shit out of Moore" and that this would have ended the "ugliness" is laughably absurd. You really don't think that the Avs would have then sent out Worrell to fight Brookbank, or another player on Vancouver? Were you living under a rock when the Avalanche-Red Wing war raged for multiple games over multiple seasons? Yes, it would have been preferable for the Canucks to have the option of goon-ing it up that night compared to what Bertuzzi actually did (I agree with you when you say that the instigator penalty is hurting the league) it's a fucking joke if you think that Brookbank pummeling Moore would have ended the drama.

    What if

I wish the NHL one included a "What if Gary Bettman didn't ruin the league by trying to recreate it as the new NBA?" theory.

I thought that the league was going to wait and see how the Canucks did this postseason before deciding whether or not to add more games next season. If Vancouver gets swept in the first round, or lose in either 5 or 6 games, the total suspension will be less than 20 games, and thus would be shorter than the last few 'big' suspensions. However, if the Canucks get to round 2 or beyond, the suspension will be longer than the others and thus more games next year would not be necessary.

Compared to Ciccarelli hitting Richardson, May hitting Heinze, Granato hitting ______ (can't think of the Blackhawk player's name), or Guerin hitting his teammate in the preseason 2 years ago, the McSorley hit was a light shot. He didn't take a full swing, he took the equivalent of a golf-putt. Hard enough to do damage, obviously, but when you compare the way the victims went down, the effects of the swing were obvious. Brashear fell backwards, showing that he was knocked for a loop; the other victims all crumpled like they'd been shot. If McSorley had hit Brashear with a full swing, he'd have fallen forward not backward. Fucked up, yes, but not a full swing that 'almost killed him'.

    Hercules Hernandez passes away

Did he ever use the full "Hercules Hernandez" name in the WWF, or was that just in the Southern leagues? I don't remember him using the surname when he came to the WWF, but I might be wrong.

    New Warlord/Barbarian pic

Am I allowed to say that I used to like the Powers of Pain while one or both are alive, or do I have to wait until they die before I admit that I was a fan? They were a cool team (albeit a complete ripoff of the Road Warriors) and I'd prefer a modern day equivalent of them to most current tag teams.

I wouldn't call him an "enforcer" - he wasn't good enough in that department. More of a journeyman power forward. His sister was way more talented. I contend that it's just as bad. Both were attacks from behind, but one was with a stick, and one was with a roundhouse right. In both cases there was no way for the player to defend themselves. If you look at the replay, Bertuzzi - from behind - grabbed Moore's sweater to ensure that the punch would land. As Moore was kayoed, and Bertuzzi still had a handful of sweater, he went down with the dead weight. If you want to fight a guy, the unwritten code requires that you give the guy at least a sporting chance. There was none here for Moore. Like McSorley, this was clearly premeditated, and the suspension should reflect that. But then, I'm a guy who thought that Heatley should rot in jail for a year or two as well. Didn't Granato get a 10-15 game suspension for a stick violation when he was still playing? If my memory serves me correctly (and I do admit that my memory is pretty iffy) he cross checked a Blackhawk and left him twitching on the ice. So, he's not in a position to say that the Bertuzzi hit was the 'worst ever' or any crap like that. And I'm probably in the minority, but I really think that the McSorley hit on Brashear was no where near as bad as Bertuzzi's (or May's hit on Heinze, or Hunter's on Turgeon, or Dino's on Richardson, etc). McSorley was trying to fight Brashear, and Brash was unwilling, so Marty went to hit him on the shoulder. Unfortunately, he missed and ended up tapping his head. Was it wrong to do? Yeah, no doubt, but it wasn't the Paul Bunyan-esque swing that it's been hyped up to be. And I still think that Brashear should have fought McSorley; they'd fought earlier and after winning Brashear taunted McSorley (breaking one 'enforcer code' rule) taunted and instigated with non-fighters from the Bruins throughout the game (breaking a second 'enforcer code' rule) and then refused to give McSorley a rematch (breaking a third 'enforcer code' rule). He didn't deserve the concussion, but if he'd played by the unwritten rules it wouldn't have happened. Lastly, what do you guys think that Bertuzzi was saying/doing when he was stalking Moore right before the sucker punch? My impression was that he wanted to fight Moore face-to-face, and when Moore was unwilling to go with him he just flipped out and thus assaulted him. Again, I'm not saying that Moore deserved to be so seriously injured, but it could have been very easily avoided if they'd just dropped the gloves. On an unrelated note, the Rangers can have McCarthy back. There's a reason that he's been a healthy scratch since recovering from his jaw/concussion injury: he wasn't enforcing before he got hurt and doesn't have enough skill to do much besides fight. What's the point of having a fighter if he's unwilling to fight?

    Kellen Winslow v. Brett Favre

Because Winslow did more than just use the one word, he had an entire analogy about being a soldier going to war, while a real war was going on in Iraq. If he'd said that 5 years ago (when there weren't any major conflicts going on) it wouldn't have caused such a ruckus.

    William Hung gets record deal

That no talent is going to make a ton of money for the record label that signed him, though. Well, as long as they limit their spending for the creation and marketing of the CD. The thing will become the 'hip' thing to buy and all sorts of idiots will pick it up at $13.00 a pop. If you can make the label money, they couldn't care less how deserving you are.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

I have to disagree. Its been blown apart by the media, while yes it was a dirty play, but the punch did not break his neck, you they think it was. You think that sending him to the ice broke his neck, and while sevre whiplash probably occured, and I'm not going to argue that. Its when the players from Colorado jumped on Bertuzzi's back, and this is the major cause, probably in the broken neck. The fallacy in that argument, though, is that the love-tap that McSorley gave Brashear isn't what gave him the concussion, it was Brashear's head bouncing on the ice like a basketball. But it's what caused the thing that caused the injury that gets 'credit' for the problem, not what directly caused the injury. If the sucker punch hadn't set the whole thing in motion, there wouldn't have been the pigpile on Moore's neck and back, causing serious damage.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

And while I agree that many, many more horriffic attacks have happened in NHL history, it's a different world now. A lot of what the Bullies did, or the Bruins of the 70s, or Gordie Howe did, would be viewed differently now, what with more extended TV coverage and replays and whatnot. The other factors that will come back to haunt Bertuzzi: - the fact that 'bounties' were discussed after the original hit on Naslund. This was quickly downplayed and denied, but it showed that people within Vancouver's locker room were talking about getting revenge. - the way that Bertuzzi hounded Moore around the ice right before blasting him. It was so obvious that he was going to do something, unlike the Lemieux/Draper hit (which I still think was a mistake, as it appeared that Lemieux was looking to hit someone else and Draper just got in the way). Even the McSorley/Brashear hit looked less intentional than the Bertuzzi hit. - Bertuzzi's already been hit with a long suspension, which makes him a repeat offender in they eyes of the league. I'd have to say that I think this is worse than the McSorley hit or the Lemieux hit, both of which really seemed more accidental than this one.

    Modifying Sports Jerseys.....

I'd say leave it as is ... I still sport my Bourque & Belanger Bruins sweaters, and the Bird Celtics jersey, and they've all been gone for years. (and Belanger was nothing more than a short-time goon). To quote the old cliche, it's the name on the front, not the name on the back, that counts

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

The hit that Bertuzzi did on Moore was MUCH worse than the hit McLaren leveled Zednik with. McLaren's was illegal, yes, but close to borderline. The Bertuzzi assault is more comparable to the McSorley/Brashear love-tap (for which McSorley got a year) and the cheap shot that Johnson hit Beukeboom with (which got 12 games). The punishment that I've heard is 13 games (the rest of Vancouver's regular season) and, potentially, the beginning of the playoffs. While I'm in favor of getting retribution on the ice (rather than through suspensions or fines) there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. Attacking someone like that is uncalled for, and it's what gives hockey a bad name. (The US stations like espn ignore a game that's full of huge saves and gorgeous goals but will focus on shit like this). Plus, if you're going to out-and-out assault someone, why have a superstar do it? Call up someone from the minors, or use a goon like Brookbank, and have them do the dirty work. Bertuzzi is an important part of the Canucks team, and they can ill afford to lose him for the rest of the season. Plus, he already got a 10-gamer for leaving the bench to fight a year or two ago, so he's now a repeat offender. If there's anyone that hasn't seen the clip yet, it's available at www.hockey-fights.com ... the page is WICKED slow today, though, because I think alot of the blood-marks are flocking there to see what happened.

    Ricky Williams

Good call ... I just read it as if the "you" was left off the sentence, as in "you know defensive players can't tackle him by his dreads" ... I didn't even think that it was a know/now typo. My bad.

    Ricky Williams

Actually, the league ruled that it's completely legal to use hair to tackle. I doubt that's why he trimmed the mop, though, I think it's just because he was hiking during the offseason and a big ass head of hair would get annoying.

Branding - The New Teen Trend

AoO is right ... before tattooing became more common among African Americans, many black frats would get their greek symbol branded on their arms. (former Patriots tight end Ben Coates had a huge ass Omega symbol on his arm, for example). And as much as I hate to admit it, when I was a young stoner punk, me and a friend branded each other. It's barely visible now, but if I point it out to someone you can very easily see an iron cross on my inner bicep.

Why Kane HAS to win at WM XX

Maybe we'll be 'lucky' enough to see a double DQ or double countout and this feud will drag on. That way, no one loses at WM and we, the fans, get the 'thrill' of an extended feud between these two WWE superstars.`

    Chappelle's Show thread

Forgive me if this is generally known, but in the intros to both of the Lil Jon skits Chappelle says that "skeet skeet skeet" thing ... and then he says that the white folks will be pissed when we find out what it means. What does it mean? Should I know? And Charlie Murphy is the man ... like YnA said, I have to laugh as soon as he walks on the screen.

    Rob Feinstein........

Maybe this is the first time that he's done this, and he just got caught the first time he tried. Bad luck: getting caught the first time you try to meet a minor for sex. Good luck: the fact that there wouldn't be a bunch of other kids ready to come forward and send your ass to jail for longer.

    Chappelle's Show thread

I've got to agree with the general consensus ... nothing was fantastic, but nothing was outrageously bad, either. Basically, a pretty forgettable episode. I didn't like the Eddie Griffith appearance, though. One of the 'regulars' could have made that character every bit as funny, if not funnier.

    Well wasn't that horseshit

Any person that feels shame over something that they said or did on a message board needs to find their front door, open it, walk through it, and see the world outside. There's a lot more going on in this world that's a lot more important than talking to strangers online.
