The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

If Washington could pick up Morris (and other prospects) for Kolzig & Gonchar, it'd be a great hockey trade for them. I stress 'hockey trade' because it'd be good as a personnel decision, beyond being just a salary dump. Morris is a young, offensive defenseman who could easily replace Gonchar on the blue line, and is 8 years younger. And if the Caps moved Kolzig, they'd be able to transition more goaltending responsibilities to their young netminders, and save $6.25 million in the process. If they could find a way to get another roster player (such as Hinote) instead of just AHL prospects or draft picks, then I'd say it would be a fantastic move for the Caps.

What teams do you root for or follow?

NHL: Boston Bruins (although I also like to see the Canucks and Oilers play well) NFL: New England Patriots (with the Bears and Seahawks at #s 2 & 3) NCAA Football: Colorado State Rams (with BC as my #2) MLB: I'm pretty apathetic, but if I had to pick a team it'd be either the Red Sox or Rockies. NBA: Same as MLB, more apathetic than anything but if pressed to pick a team to root for it'd be the Celts and Nuggets.

    Serial Killers

I'm not saying that Lucas' mom deserved to be killed, but she was a prostitute that used to force Henry Lee watch her have sex with Johns, allowed them to have sex with him as a child, and forced Henry Lee to go to school dressed as a girl as a form of punishment. It's no wonder why HLL grew up to be a woman-hating serial killer.

    Serial Killers

To go back to the original thought behind the post - keeping serial killers alive to study them - it's actually something that they've done for years. Even when a killer is given the death penalty, they still have years of appeals to go through as well as the extended wait on death row. Rarely is someone sentenced to death and then killed so quickly that they can't at least be interviewed and studied. For example, there's the Homicidal Triad (bedwetting when older than 15, pyromania and animal abuse) that they've determined that most murderers and serial killers exhibited these traits as children. If anyone's taken an abnormal psych class, they've been forced to learn about things like serial killers, so it's definitely been studied. Other random thoughts: Andrei Chikatilo (aka Citizen X) would have never gotten away with murdering so many children if he wasn't a Russian at the time of the Cold War. The Soviets were too proud/vain to admit that there was a killer on the loose that they were unable to capture, so for years and years they suppressed any reports of what he was doing. Thus, he was able to kill at will with little chance of capture. Two interesting facts about Albert Fish: he'd hidden so many needles in his skin, especially his groin, that when they went to give him the chair it short circuited. And, as a way of atoning for his sins, he liked to soak cottonballs in alcohol, place them in his ass, and then set them on fire. (fun for everyone! Try it at home!) And I can't believe that no one has named "The Düsseldorf Vampire", Peter Kurten. He killed his first victims when he was 5 (five!), he liked to molest his sisters, his sexual habits included simultaneously raping and killing animals, and his last wish was that he hoped to be able to hear his blood gurgle after he was executed. Not the most normal guy in the world, and my personal favorite serial killer of all time.
  5. "She was hospitalized for 24 days with six fractured vertebrae; four fractures in her pelvis; a deep puncture wound in her chest; a collapsed lung; three broken ribs; a broken nose; sinus fractures in her face; one broken and three chipped teeth, and numerous scrapes and bruises." She must have looked like hell after he was done mowing her down with his car ... he probably couldn't get it up for her looking like she looked afterwards.

The 10 Ten Canceled TV Shows

That's just crazy talk. That show was godawful. You know what? I'll go one better. There isn't even a Kevin Smith MOVIE that is as good as Family Guy is. Chasing Amy is better than anything on Family Guy. Family Guy is WAY overrated. Don't get me wrong, I like the show, but it's ridiculous how overblown it is. Family Guy overrated? Wow, that is the first time I've ever heard that one. How can it be the first time that someone's heard that Family Guy was overrated when there's a few of us that say it everytime someone references the show? Are you retarded? It's called sarcasm... How about calming the hell down? Please explain how I was supposed to know that he was being sarcastic? The number of idiotic comments on this board are increasing each and every day, so to have someone say that they've never heard the Family Guy called overrated would not be a surprise. Dick.

The show was good, but not great, and certainly doesn't merit the deity-level status that it receives. And I don't get how NewsRadio makes this list ... by the time that it was canceled it was barely watchable. I think if a show is on long enough to go from being great to bad, then it ran it's course and shouldn't be viewed as 'canceled'. It should be viewed as euthanized.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Russ Conway (local writer, HHOF member, the one that broke the story about Eagleson being the piece of shit that he is) still calls the teams that were around before the last few expanions "The Original 26" ... so, using that mentality, only the teams that came after that would be expansion teams. And I think that honestly, a team has a 3-5 year window to be viewed as an expansion team. After that they'd have their own draft picks and free agent signings as the bulk of their lineup, rather than castoffs picked up in the expansion draft. Just my theory.

Hulk Hogan must be at WM XX

If there has to be a Hogan at WM XX, why can't it be his daughter Brooke? If I wasn't so lazy, I'd search out the thread about his daughter being hot from back last summer (August, maybe?) ... if my memory serves, the big idea for WM XX at that point was: Hulk & Brooke vs. Vince & Stephanie. Money, right there at their fingertips.

    Running powerslam

I'd say no ... I didn't buy it as a great finisher ten years ago, and the 'sport' has become even more high-impact now. Bradshaw's clothesline works because of the way that it's sold, it looks like it'd really knock the wind out of someone. The People's Elbow & Worm are just jokes, and are examples of when you need to suspend disbelief as a fan. A running powerslam would be in the gray area in between, not 'damaging' enough looking to be taken seriously and not enough of a joke to be viewed with a grain of salt.

Stern Taken Off Radio in Six Cities

Well, he does have his TV show on E! last time I checked. Of course, its censored, but I'm just saying. He was doing those things long before he was on E! Technically he was on TV (on WOR) before E! even existed, but that show went off the air so long ago I don't think that it should count in this argument. I think that the Stern listeners were such ballwashers for him that just hearing him talk about how hot a girl was or something good enough for them. I remember back when I could stomach his show, and people would call in and say that they were having a hard time concentrating on driving to work while they were hearing him talk about how hot what he was seeing was.
  12. The reason that I don't put much faith in the "next wrestlers to be released rumors" is that it's always with wrestlers that aren't earning much money. Regardless of how stupid they sometimes are with their booking or choices for pushes, the people behind the scenes are still running a business, and one of the best ways to save money is to cut spending. (that way, even if not much money is coming in, less money is going out and it makes it easier to make a profit) Why would they release/cut/fire Dreamer or SOH, when neither are paid that much, but keep Rikishi or Gunn, who are?

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

I'm pretty sure that Bowness is just the interim coach, and won't be retained after this season ends ... I've heard that Marty McSorley is one of the frontrunners to be the head coach next season (if there is a next season). I've always been a big fan of Marty, and was one of the few that still defended him after all that Brashear-bullshit, so I'd like to see him get a chance to coach the Coyotes.

    EuroTrip

I saw it last night ... thought it was as funny as Road Trip but not as funny as Old School. But I definitely thought it was funny. Some observations, & my apologies for not remembering most of the characters names: - the "best friend" character was doing the worst David Spade impersonation that I've ever seen. It's comparable with Christian Slater aping Jack Nicholson in Heathers, but not as well done. - Michelle Trachtenberg (sp?) became amazingly hot, and was worth the price of admission alone. - the soccer hooligans = hilarity. Vinnie Jones stole the movie during his scenes. - the movie was smart to show tons of boobies & 'sick moments' ... too many movies have the R rating but still hold back from showing a lot. Not here, with plenty of chest to look at and the twins making out ... if you're going to get stuck with an R rating, might as well push the envelope a bit. - Matt Damon cameo appearance = hilarity. - some scenes went on too long (the creepy Italian guy on the train, the robot fight in front of the Louvre) but the good outweighed the bad. Definitely worth seeing

    Hangovers? Never again!

Has anyone else seen that commercial for Chaser, the hangover preventer? It's on late at night, and seems so over-the-top that I thought that there was no way it was real. But, lo and behold, a little search online finds the following: http://www.doublechaser.com/default.htm Of course, it still seems relatively sketchy, what with the "Generally Recognized as Safe" description on the front page. I mean, if I'm looking for safety I'd like it to be universally accepted as safe, not just generally. But maybe that's just me. So, has anyone seen this ad? Has anyone known anyone that's tried Chaser, and lived to tell about it? Is anyone willing to be the guinea pig that risks life and limb by being the first on TSM to try this "generally safe" drug?

    Hangovers? Never again!

I was digging your post until you ended it by quoting the shirt that Tom Metzger wore at AryanFest. And I doubt that it's a sugar pill or placebo, the FDA wouldn't let them sell it if it were ... to steal from the webpage's Q&A: Q: What are Chaser hangover pills made of? A: Chaser is a patent-pending formula of activated calcium carbonate and vegetable carbon (activated charcoal). Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in most calcium supplements and antacids. Vegetable carbon has been used for centuries to absorb toxins and is still used in hospitals today. Both ingredients are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. Q: How does Chaser hangover prevention work? A: Chaser absorbs the elements in beer, wine and spirits that cause hangovers. These elements, called congeners, are the byproducts of the fermentation process that gives alcoholic beverages flavor, aroma and color. When released into your bloodstream, congeners cause a reaction leading to inflammation and pain. In other words, a hangover. Chaser attracts and absorbs congeners, keeping them in your digestive tract where they are harmless. Of course, having said (and copied and pasted) all that, I don't see me trying the shit anytime soon. The occasional hangovers that I get aren't bad enough to try something that's considered kind-of safe. (and Squirtle!, getting hangovers comes with getting older, not from being a pussy. I've suffered from more hangovers in the last 2 years or so than I did from the ages 18-28.)

John Cena Getting Along Well Backstage

Being a nice boy from Southie just means that you haven't been caught doing anything yet. Someone feeling cynical today? No more than normal, actually ... I've lived in or near Boston most of my life, and have spent more than my share of time in South Boston. And while it'd be an exaggeration to say that every guy from Southie was a punk, there was a larger than normal percentage of "bad boys". Just my $0.02, I'm sorry if my opinion is in the minority.

If I was Quenneville, I'd hold off on taking a job in New York. Hell, if I was Renney I'd have held off on taking the job. It's a no-win situation in New York, and there will undoubtedly be better jobs for the taking once the season ends. Why take a job that you know that you're destined to fail? The money just isn't worth it. And how 'classy' is Slats? Basically blaming the fans for the Rangers being so piss poor, by saying that the "Fire Sather" were distracting and caused the team to make more mistakes. Why take any blame for bad managment when you can blame the fans for caring enough to boo and chant? Sather went from genius to idiot in about half-a-decade.

Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin Arrested

Are you sure? When I couldn't remember if I'd remembered the definition of flotsam correctly (compared to jetsam) I checked out the definition online. And the definition there didn't reference common street trash. (not doubting your definition, just wondering if I should stop using dictionary.com for my definitions)

Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin Arrested

I thought flotsam was, by definiton whatever was left floating in the ocean when a ship sank. So, unless the fans smuggled some junk that they found on the beach all the way to Toledo and then into the show, I doubt that it was actually flotsam that they threw at the stage. nl5: hates when writers use big words just for the sake of using them.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

In a perfect world, the B's could keep Jillson and make it Gill, Samuelsson and the pick for Gonchar. But I don't think many teams want a 6'7" player that plays like he's 5'7" and wearing a skirt. And I'm not too high on Jillson; at this point, he's the #7 defenseman, and once Moran gets healthy enough to play Jillson will drop even further. A player can only show potential for so long before it starts to look like it'll never pan out, and he's been showing potential for 2 or 3 years now. Morrison, who's a true rookie, gets playing time over Jillson.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

How quickly until Quenneville gets hired somewhere else? With him and Paul Maurice both available, it looks like the Rangers might be able to get someone decent to replace Slats as the head coach. (while we're talking, wouldn't someone like Ted Nolan be PERFECT in New York? Talk abut someone that deserves another chance to be the coach somewhere). And the news in Boston is that both the B's and Canes are denying the Francis to Boston rumors. But the new rumor is that the Bruins would trade Samuelsson, Jillson, and a #1 pick for Gonchar. While it's more than I'd like to see go for a short-time player, it'd allow the team to pick up a good player without sacrificing anything from the starting lineup.

    Mother of the Year

While I sympathize with your position -- and part of me agrees with you -- the fact remains that we live in a civilized society. Torture is evil, and we're better than that. I agree that we should be above that ... but I also feel that the end justifies the means. If people thought that they'd face painful, irreparable punishment, perhaps they'd think twice about committing an atrocious crime such as torturing a toddler. I'm also in favor of castration for serial rapist and molesters (either chemical castration or the real deal), and using serious criminals in place of animals for what's now known as 'animal testing' (e.g. hairspray in the eyes, etc.), and most of all in favor of the punishment fitting the crime ... if you hurt a kid, someone hurts you.

    SAT Score

The first time that I took it was as a sophomore in high school, and since I thought it was just going to be a throw-away taking (and I'd retake it as a junior) me and a few friends snorted some mescaline before the test. Still, I got a 1310, and thus never took it again. Man, I miss high school.
