    Bill Simmons Super Blog

While I agree with a lot of what TSG says, I have to say that I disagree with his placement of Jennifer Aniston on his all time hotties list. She was good, never more than that, and was downright unattractive at times (e.g. while starring in the Leprechaun). It detracts from his list to have her included. It seemed like he needed a "contemporary" or current star to put on the list so he added her. Other than that, it was a good read.

    The OAO Super Bowl Thread

I don't think anyone should use it. Along with the word "stoked". They are both vile. Sadly, I'm almost thirty and yet "stoked" slips into my regular vernacular pretty often. It's a carryover from the surfer/stoner halcyon days (daze?) of my youth. So, I'll have to agree on "banging" being inexcusable, but don't lump "stoked" in with that riffraff.

    Terrell Owens blasts Jeff Garcia

If T.O. wants to win a Super Bowl, why would he go the Eagles? (sorry Philly fans, the joke was right there, someone had to say it). Owens is an idiot, and proved it in that article. First of all, making fun of someone's DUI is classless, and Owens better hope that he stays on the good side of the law because hypocrisy is not an attractive trait to have. Second of all, who was QBing the year before, when SF was a playoff caliber team? How much did Garcia fall apart in one year? Third of all, which team that is oh-so-close to the Super Bowl is going to want to add a locker room cancer and distraction like T.O. and risk fucking it all up? I hope he goes to Philly, just to watch their fans boo him senseless after watching him half-ass it in a few games.

Random Gig Review #1 : Good Charlotte

How do you live in the UK and not know who The Business are?!? They've been around a lot longer than Good Charlotte, and will most likely still be around long after Good Charlotte have cashed in their pop-sound as much as they good and disappeared. The Business are one of the most influential Oi! bands of all time, and have been putting out quality records for a few decades now. I can understand why a Good Charlotte fan wouldn't appreciate their sound, but to write them off as a "Sex Pistols wannabe band" is a fucking joke. Those two bands sound NOTHING alike - if anything, Good Charlotte has stolen more from the Pistols sound than the Business have. The one thing that I will agree with you is that choosing The Business to open for bubblegum pop-"punk" was a shite decision. I've seen The Business 3 times now, and each time was with a hardcore or punk band. And the fans dug them. Put them with a pop band and it's understandable that they'd go over like a fart in church.

For once I am excited about the...

When Benoit was stuck in mid-card feuds, people would say "he should be in the upper-card, feuding for the belt". Now he's feuding for the belt, and is in line to face a champ at the biggest show of the year, and people say "it's not good enough, it's the wrong belt" or "it doesn't make sense. If he wins the belt, and then loses it back, it'll be "it wasn't long enough of a title reign." Can't people ever be happy? People got what they wanted: Benoit winning the Rumble, and going to Wrestlemania to main event the 20th anniversary of the biggest show in the sport's history. But it's not good enough, I guess. I kind of hope that Benoit jobs to HHH at 'Mania just to watch the fireworks and venom fly on this board the next day. And I truly doubt that history will just leave the Raw belt as a footnote; HHH has too much pull and held this belt for too long for it to be just forgotten. It'll be treated as a seperate entitity, yes, but it's not like those that held the belt will be asterisks only.

    Jericho's wish...

If they had enough time to develop it, it could work ... here's my suggestion: Jericho is facing Orton for the IC belt. Jericho wins, and post-match gets attacked by Orton and HHH. Trish runs in for the save, but HHH and Orton just shove her aside and keep putting the boots to Jericho. Out of the blue, Benoit runs to the ring and saves Jericho (I mean completely out of the blue, without theme music and wearing street clothes). This ends that week's RAW. The next week opens with the explanation: Benoit was just backstage visiting friends and saw his old aquintance Jericho getting stomped. Jericho then says that he used Orton and HHH come out to confront them, and challenge the Chrises to a match. Bischoff and Austin agree, but say it's not until next week. This week will be a rematch btwn. Orton and Jericho for the IC title, which will main event RAW. During the match, all of Evolution come to ringside, so Benoit, Storm and Morley come down as well. Obviously a brawl breaks out, and during the melee HHH pedigrees Jericho and puts Orton on top. But they're close enough to the ropes that Benoit puts Jericho's foot on the ropes. The ref ends up sending everyone to the back, and the match continues. After maybe 10 more minutes, the ref gets bumped, and Orton KOs Jericho with a chair and out runs Trish, who bulldogs Orton off of the top rope onto the chair, and puts Jericho on top. Jericho retains. The next week, it's announced that the Benoit/Jericho vs. HHH/Orton main event will be in a steel cage to prevent outside interference, and if Evolution win Benoit is fired from RAW and sent back to Smackdown but if the Chrises win, then Benoit gets a title shot at HHH. Obviously, the Chrises win. This would leave Jericho as a true face in a feud with Orton (which is obviously a step-down for Jericho, but it would only be short-term), Benoit feuding with HHH for the title, and Storm and Morley feuding with Flair and Batista. (BTW, I'd have sent either RVD or Booker T to Smackdown in exchange for Benoit. Maybe both, and have Edge join RAW when he's healthy. Storm and Morley could turn on the Chrises and join Christian and Edge could return in a run-in saving Benoit and Jericho) Sorry for the tangent and the quasi-fantasy booking ... obviously there isn't enough time to make this happen, but just a way that it could have worked.

    The Pixies Officially Reunite!

5MoD, if you get the package deal, it's only $140.00 ... so, it's $75.00/day, or 2 days for $140.00. If I wasn't 3,000 miles away, I'd go to this in a heartbeat. Instead, I have to hope that all the bands that I want to see (Cure, AIR, Morrissey, Pixies, etc) do a US tour and come to Boston ... or at least NYC. I can make the drive to New York, but no way can I do another one to California just for a concert.

Ever see someone you know on TV?

I've been on TV while at sports games a few times (last year when the Bruins and Stars played in Boston, NESN showed me and my friend sitting in silence for like 45 seconds while doing the post-game, pre-OT discussion ... my girlfriend at the time said it was hilarious, we were sitting with an empty seat between us and not talking to each other at all). One of my teachers from college was in the shower scene in Starship Troopers. Technically she was a teaching assistant, but she was still hot. And it was funny to have seen her naked and then try to sit through class without thinking of her topless.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Primeau making the AS team didn't surprise me ... Nick Boynton making it did. I like him, and think he brings a lot to the table for the Bruins, but I figured that he's a good but not great player in the overall scheme of the NHL. Having said that, though, I'm stoked that he made it. And BwG, I could very easily find pics of the Joe-Lindros debacle, but don't think that I want to encourage you to mock a fellow Bruins faithful! What I will do, though is http://www.nhlfights.isgreat.tv/ ... I don't know the quality, I've never actually downloaded any of the clips. But they have clips of the Thornton/Lindros fight. (BEWARE - there is a 'not safe for work' picture on the bottom of the page)

    The OAO Super Bowl Thread

I don't see how anyone can say that this will be a blowout for either team, and I'm a complete Pats mark. Other than the Bills game to end the season, when was the last time that the Patriots blew out ANYONE?!? They don't win games that way, even games that they basically dominate (Colts last weekend) end up being a close game. I truly see the Pats winning by 10 or so, but not the blowout that a lot of Pats fans (both on this board and in 'real life'). And Crandamaniac, I'll agree with you that Proehl isn't a horrible receiver, but he's not the type of receiver that will have a "10 catches for 190 yards" game that will be necessary if New England is able to shut down the run. If Davis and Foster can't get moving, Delhomme will have to throw more in this one game than he did in all three previous playoff games. Plus, history has proven that Proehl shies away from big hits (see Super Bowl XXXVI for an example), and this year's Pats secondary hits harder than that year's team did.

HTM slams Flair on his website

How long did Christian hold the title? Certainly not the 14 months that HTM did. How many defenses did he really have were it looked like he was going to lose it only to win either by cheating or reatain by countout or DQ? Some, but not nearly the number that HTM did. If they gave Christian the reign that they gave HTM, they could have had him Main Eventing house shows with ease. Plus, it's comparing apples to oranges when you compare the 80s to today. I never said that they could completely re-enact this angle today (well, technically I did say it, but edited my post immediately b.c I wasn't sure I could defend that argument). My point was, and still is, that they could have taken virtually any heel and given them that longass title reign. The bookers did a great job, and HTM was in the right place at the right time. Did HTM suck? No, not at all. But I can't say that he is the only person that could have made that angle work.

Anybody in the New England area been to...

I frequent Newbury fairly often, but I normally hit the ones in the city (either on Newbury St, or Harvard Sq, or that one that's just off Washington St which name I can't actually think of right now). If I'm north of Boston I might hit the one in Burlington or Woburn, and occasionally shop in Tax-Free Salem NH (Live Free or Die!) I haven't been to the ones in Natick or Bellingham yet, though. I haven't sold a CD there in a while, but a few years ago I ended up selling 80 there over the course of a few visits, and got just under $350.00. If they think that they can get $8,9,10 dollars for your used discs, they'll treat you Ok ... if it's rubbish to them, you'll be lucky to get $3 a disc.
  13. I mark out for the Skinny Puppy reference every time I see a post by you, so good call on the screen name. Mine is simple ... Northern Lights 5 hybred with Skunk 1 = a very good, quickly growing strain of weed. Normally called 51. I've used t for years and years now, and debated changing it to just the Northern Lights before the name change hiatus went into effect. But old habits die hard, and thus I'll remain nl5xsk1.

HTM slams Flair on his website

Not at the level of HTM. When you're at the point that an arena would take the popcorn vendor as champion just to take the belt away from the guy-when it's not even the major belt- you have gold. Like, for instance, no one cares right now about the IC champ, so no one will care when he finally loses it. When you can get people to care that much about who the IC champ is, you've done your job. The problem with that argument is that it wasn't HTM that made the fans feel that way, it was the way that he was booked. It could have been virtually ANY heel (Rude, Piper, Reed, etc) and if the bookers booked him to be a cowardly heel that didn't deserve the belt, the fans would have been absolutely rabid to see his lose the belt as well. It's not like it was HTM in particular, it was the way that the booking was done.

    The OAO Super Bowl Thread

I'll reiterate here what I said in one of the other football threads ... the comparison between this year's Panthers and the SB winning Patriots are valid (unknown QB comes off the bench, underrated castoff RB, huge hitting defense, etc.) But there is no way that you can compare this year's Pats to the Rams of that year. That team had a fancy nickname and a coach too stubborn to do anything besides the "Greatest Show on Turf". If he'd have gone to Faulk early and often, the Rams would have won. But no, he kept throwing and his WRs were too chickenshit to take a hit. Belichick won't be like that, nor will the Pats. Look for them to keep as many guys in the box to shutdown Foster and Davis, and force Delhomme to beat them. And I don't see Delhomme having the skills to win a SB on his own.

    Raiders hire coach

Davis got lucky with hiring a few young, relatively unheralded coaches in the past (Madden, Gruden, Shanahan - although the last 2 had more success after they left the Raiders) and is trying to catch lightning in a bottle by making hires like this again. But he doesn't realize that he has as many Callahan-type hires as he does good ones. It's great watching the Raiders make shitty choices; I'm one of the ones that's absolutely ecstatic that Weiss and Crennel will stay in New England for another year.

More fun loving Eagle fan stories.

I don't have it saved on my hard-drive anymore, or I'd post it now, but has anyone else seen that picture of 2 or 3 Flyers fans beating up on the one Devils fan, right there in the stands? One guy has him in a choke from behind and another is just finished throwing a haymaker at the guys face. Someone made it into one of those "priceless" advertisement parodies. And I doubt the one Devils fan instigated a fight against a group of Flyers fans.

    The Real World: San Diego

The only reason that I watched "Return to NY" was to figure if/when MTV would announce that that one girl was actually a guy. Don't ask me her name, I don't know it. But the one that was all buddy-buddy with Coral and wore way too much make-up. I could of sworn that thing was a tranny.

    Super Bowl Performances

So what? I highly doubt the average football fan listens to Janet Jackson. No, but the average football fan watches the Super Bowl. They put this rubbish on before and during the game to pique the interest of viewers that otherwise might be apathetic about the pregame and halftime shows.

Are you sure it was a cab you hailed? Could you have reported his badge number? Yeah, I'm sure it was a cab. I was pretty fucked up (Phish concert after a long day of drinking and smoking) but was coherent enough to remember it being a cab that I flagged down, and it being an African American driver that told me it'd cost me everything that I had on me. (I'm not implying anything about it being a black guy, just saying that was one of the details that I remember). I didn't even think of catching his number to report later. I ended up catching a ride from these skanky girls that would only drive me to their hotel, so had to foot patrol it another 5 blocks or so at like 4 in the morning. Not the best end to an otherwise great day.

    The Real World: San Diego

I couldn't believe how mad I was when Coral ruined it for the Real World. She was such a bitch towards the end with her "if it's all guys it won't look good" spiel, and then wanting to quit almost immediately as soon as the Rush started. It looked like the spider bite didn't happen until she had already quit and was sitting there with the EMTs, so it wasn't an excuse for her cigarette smoking ass to be tired 2 minutes into the final mission. And I'm pretty sure it was the Boston cast that sat around and watched TV 24/7, and that's why they banned TV access in the house, not Jon from LA. Damn, I hope it's the Boston cast, if a hick from downsouth had his first exposure to California and instead spent all day inside watching TV; what a freaking waste.

    Wrestle Rock 86

I saw it years and years ago (like, probably around 1987 or 1988) and really don't remember too much about it. I was a big mark for crappy AWA wrestling (Road Warriors, Brody, Hansen, Kamala, Debeers) and hated the cartoonish WWF, so I dug it then. But I really don't remember too much about it, and so didn't have much to say when the thread was started. If I could find a way to watch it again now, I would in a heartbeat.

More fun loving Eagle fan stories.

It's not just Philly fans, obviously, but it does tend to be more in the Northeast than anywhere else in the country. For example, during last years football season a bunch of Redskins fans beat the hell out of an Eagles fan so bad that their jersey (formally white) was thought to be a Redskins jersey (maroon red). I've personally seen fights between Bruins fans and Rangers fans (in both Boston and NY) and between Bruins fans and Canadiens fans (in Montreal only). And been in a fight with a Flyers fan at a game here in Boston (his girlfriend talked shit to my girlfriend and tried to fight her, I told him to put a leash on his girlfriend and he spit on me. Best punch I ever threw, one punch knockdown that ended the fight so quickly that security never even got involved.) Having said all that, though, Philly is the one city that scares me to go to wearing my hometeam colors. I'll wear a Bruins sweater in MSG or Montreal or Toronto without fear, but you'd NEVER catch me wearing one in Philly. And I can say that Philly is a hellhole, at least the area around the arenas are. I went to a concert down there, and on the way to the FU Center saw too many people pissing in the subway stations to count. And on the way home, I flagged down a cab who told me that he'd only take me to my hotel for "all the money that you got". I'm sure dirtbags are everywhere, but the worst of Philly is the worst of them all.
