The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Methinks that a lot of JR's frustrations are due to the losing streak more than anything else. Yes, the zebra missed an obvious call, but sorry, Roenick, it happens all the time. If you guys were undefeated in 6, would you be so wah-wah-wah?
  2. I'll preface my statement with the admission that I'm a Patriots fan, so am pretty biased ... I think the fact that New England's defense has played so well at home will effect the numbers that Manning puts up on Sunday. Truthfully, the Chiefs showed absolutely nothing against Indy last weekend, and should be embarressed for it. Denver's D looked better than KC's did, but that's not saying much. I can't see Belichick and Crennel allowing Indy to come into their own backyard and put up the offensive fireworks that they have these last 2 weeks. Sorry, Cinderella, the streak without punting is going to come to an end. New England 24 - Indy 13 (Pats score a TD on an interception) Carolina-Philly is tougher for me to call. I'd say I've flipflopped my prediction half a dozen times this week, and will most likely continue to do so for the rest of the week. While I like Carolina's ability to run the ball against Philly, I really don't see McNabb losing this game. It might be close, and if the Panthers won I really wouldn't be surprised, but my prediction is Philly 28 - Carolina 14.

    Dave Meltzer's Top 100 Workers

Gino disappeared from SWCW in 83 right after splitting with Tully. He was AWOL until He showed up in WCCW in 84. No one (Kayfabe memories experts included) knows what happened to him. Hey, thanks, Astro. I just presumed that the question would go unanswered, so I'm happily surprised to have found out the answer. Thanks.
  4. You're full of crap. The heart punch rocks. And would work as a finishing move much more believably than the Garvin Stomp. Hell, I'd believe that as a finisher than the World's Strongest Slam. And wasn't a punch in the face the finisher that Garvin used for most of the time while in the NWA, rather than the Garvin Stomp? Hands of Stone, Ronnie Garvin.

    Clemens

This choice doesn't change whether or not he goes into the Hall as a Yankee or not ... the league decides that. The other stuff I'll give you, but the team he represents in the Hall isn't affected by his un-retirement. And why the Pettite hatred? The way that he left was fine.

    The NFL Playoff Graveyard

The last iffy-call win that the Pats had was the Tuck Rule game in the Snow two years ago. And even that one was the correct call, as the rule had been written. It's not like they went 14-2 b/c of bullshit calls ... plus, it happened against the Raiders, who have a longer history of winning with questionable calls than anyone else. (Immaculate Reception, Fumblerooski, etc.) So, maybe that one was just a bit of karma. The immaculate reception was the Steelers. I always thought that the Raiders got jobbed a lot by the refs. Good call, you're right and I'm wrong. It was Franco Harris and the Steelers that got the better end of the deal there, not the Raiders. My bad.

    Clemens

In his defense, when he left Boston he said that he wanted to play closer to home. He just didn't mention that he'd have two extended stops while on his way there, and that it'd take almost a decade for it to happen. I thought he was a dick when he was on the Red Sox, and I think that he's a dick now. Fuck Clemens.

    Dave Meltzer's Top 100 Workers

Two questions: 43. Bobby Eaton (takes some bumps few others would take, very underrated) ... what the hell bumps were they taking then? That was back when a chairshot put you on a stretcher, and a piledriver was "career threatening"? 80. Gino Hernandez (good when he wants to be, but we’ll never have to worry anymore) ... what was up with Gino? He lasted another 4 years before OD'ing, so unless his problems were already well known, I can't figure out why we wouldn't have to worry.

Flair brought up a good point

Do you all think the Flair v.2 will come soon, or will they run through the HBK, Austin, 'Taker, etc. first?

    The Skateboarding Dipshit

The skateboarder needs to hit the gym and gain some muscle mass, for two reasons. First, how do you hit someone in the head with your board three times - and kick them - and have them get up from it? Second, a feeble prick like him is in for a lifetime of asskickings if he keeps on acting like that. I'd have loved to knocked him the fuck out for being a dick even before he hit that kid with the board. And for Deon Dark's original question, there was a case where a kid died from getting hit in the head with a board, but it was a couple of friends fucking around, and the kid hit himself with one and said how tough he was, he wouldn't get hurt. So, he challenged his friend to smack him one, his friend did, and the kid ended up dying.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

I was going to start a new thread for this, but there aren't many hockey fans on this board, and most of the fans that are here might be too young to remember his playing days, so I'm just asking here ... Was Cam Neely considered a dirty player? He's beloved in Boston, so we always overlooked his questionable play, but after watching the video montage of his career highlights tonight, it was kind of hard to ignore. He had no issues with punching people while still wearing his gloves (and while the play was still going on). He would continue to throw punches when his opponent was already down and turtling. Hell, he dragged Lemieux (who was in full on turtle mode) and rammed him face first into the boards. So, can anyone answer if Neely was considered dirty?

    Clemens

Wait ... there's still a team in Toronto? Who knew?!? And if I wasn't so lazy, I'd dig through the archives and bump all those threads when it was Sox fans bashing Clemens and the NYY fans sucking his cock. Now that he's pissed on your team, can you guys see why we think he's such an asshole in Boston?

    Wrestling Convention in Charlotte

They better pray that the Panthers lose this weekend then, or else there convention is taking place Super Bowl Sunday, with a local team participating. Might adversely effect their attendance, eh?

Michael Savage calls for impeachment of Bush

He's only causing this stink to increase his book sales, so basically he's willing to fuck over his own political party to put extra money in his pocket. Although, if one of the Democrats do win the election (increasingly unlikely) he'll have 4-to-8 years of bitching about that to help him write and sell more books. Maybe it's not such a bad plan after all.

    Movies you like to quote

I actually forgot one, but didn't think it would have made sense to edit it into my previous post. Anytime me and one of my friends leaves the country, we do the scene from Spies Like Us where they throw their hands up and say "we're Americans" and then get strung up by their ankles. One of the few funny scenes in a horrid, horrid movie.

The One and Only Divisional Playoffs thread

Definitely. Peyton Manning is in a ZONE, plain and simple. That 3rd and long TD pass to Wayne in the third was sick. He made the Chiefs look silly. No, the Chiefs continuing to have absolute shit for defense made them look silly. Manning looked very good, yes, but the Chiefs defense looked very bad. As a Pats fan, I was more worried about the Titans than I am about the Colts. The Pats didn't beat either team that handily in the regular season, but they did beat both. And are now more healthy, and playing better ball, and have more of a home field advantage than they were against either Tenn. or Indy. It should be a good game, but I really do think that Belichick and Crennel will be able to bring more to the table with the Pats D than either the Broncos or Chiefs did.
  18. nl5xsk1

    Clemens

We'll be able to prove - once and for all - that MLB is as scripted as pro wrestling next post-season when Bud Selig manipulates every at-bat to ensure that the Red Sox beat the Yankees in the ALCS (in 7 games, with Schilling getting the win in game 7) and then face the Astros in the World Series, with game 7 being Clemens-Martinez. TV ratings would go through the roof, but at the end of it all, football would still be more popular.

    Movies you like to quote

Revenge of the Nerds is far-and-away the movie that my friends and I quote the most often e.g.: "you got your asses kicked by a bunch of g*ddamn nerds. NERDS!!!" ... "fireball, fireball, fireball" ... "she's not that kind of girl, Booger" "why, does she have a penis?" ... "this is bullshit, pan down - We've got bush" ... sadly, I could keep going and going. Like, literally half the movie has slipped into our everyday lexicon. Honorable mentions: Slapshot, Strange Brew, and the original Danzig home video. (although I'm unsure if that last one counts as a movie perse)

Ga. Slayings Suspect, 3 Girls Found Alive

I'd like to give a big Thank You to the Karma Police that left this guy with a painful, bullet ridden face rather than the instant death that he was looking for. Hopefully he's not so disfigured that the lifers staying in the Georgia Grey-Bar Hotel don't want to give him the raping that he deserves.

The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Kidd's not that bad, but he's basically been a career backup for a reason: he doesn't play that well against good teams. Keep him as a #2, and only play him against the Pittsburgh's or Chicago's or Columbus' of the league, and he's fine. BTW, I've got to say that my Bruins have looked as good these last two games as they've looked all year. After withstanding the initial ten-minute onslaught against the Wings, they played well on Wednesday, and they looked pretty good last night against the Penguins. Tomorrow's game against Detroit should be good.

    HAHAHAHAHA!

I never really understood the whole "as soon as MNF is over, the ratings will improve" mentality. Wrestling fans will watch wrestling, regardless of it being football season or not (unless it's a team that they root for playing in the MNF game) and it's not like every football fan will all of a sudden say: "hey, the season's over, we can watch wrestling again!". I'll only speak for myself, but I watched MNF for most of the season (and hockey games once that season started) and now that it's over, I'll watch hockey pretty much every Monday night. Watching wrestling isn't even a thought anymore ... and I doubt that I'm the only one. Moral of the story: MNF being over does NOT automatically equal increased Raw ratings.

    Who's greater

I like Cash's music better, but voted for Miles. In terms of influence, and place in music history, Miles is up there with the ultra-elite. Johnny is great, and it's cool to see all these younger kids get into him, but it still won't equal the level of fame and influence that Miles has had for the last several decades. The fact that it took a Nine In Nails cover and his death to get Cash any real mainstream attention is proof that Davis wins the argument.

    Borderline Hall of Famers

Good call to those that brought up Oates and Robitaille ... I didn't even think of them. I'll still stick with my top 10 list from before but would definitely put them as a automatic inductees (it's not like I'm saying the tough omissions won't make the Hall, I'm just saying that they're not on my top ten sure thing inductees list). Another person who I'd put as a probable/possible is Nick Lidstrom. He has a few Cups, 3 Norris trophies, and is one of the best D-men of his era. And for Vern's question, I don't think that an assistant coach or coordinator should make it. If they're good enough to be inducted, they're good enough to get a job as the head coach and earn their way to the Hall on their own.
