    TRUTH

Sometimes I see those weight-watchers ads and it makes me so mad that I want to go eat 10 burgers! And when I see those Jessica Simpson clear-skin ads, I want to go rub grease on my face just to spite the world! And in all truth: those ads where they show little kids that got killed from drunk drivers, or people that lived but got wicked badly disfigured from people driving drunk, those work for me. I make more of an effort to not drive drunk more out of fear of killing or injuring some undeserving person that's only guilty of wrong place/wrong time than I am out of fear of killing myself or getting a DUI.

    I'm Back.

RE: my egomaniacal post from earlier, Slayer, you should have seen what I wanted to type. I was going to hype the inner beauty and Colin Ferrell-esque good looks of the unnamed poster as well, but thought that it might have been a bit over the top. Entirely accurate, but over the top none-the-less.

    NFL Playoffs

After watching Eli shit the bed yesterday, I had to wonder: Will ESPN acknowledge the fact that they spent weeks hyping up the potential Manning/Manning Super Bowl?

    oAo Hostel Thread

I'd thought about that during the end of the movie, and presumed that once he put the skin tight leather glove on it served as a tourniquet to limit the blood loss. They made a point of showing him struggle to put it on, which could be attributed to how tight it was. The nerve damage could still have been suffered, they really didn't show him doing that much with that hand, other than the scene with the shaky-handed "Doctor" at the very end. And even that was minimal, and was done more with his right hand than his injured one. I thought it was harder to ignore the fact that he could run around, in & out of the 'art exhibit' building with such ease and not get caught by ANY of the guys that was chasing him. I chalked it up to, "it's a movie and thus there's some artistic license".

kkk NFL pick 'em playoff thread for both leagues

It's not too late for me to be this year's nl-asshole, kkk. Don't go giving my crown away too quickly.

    NFL Playoffs

You act like I'm playing for them. With all the times that people say "we" when talking about the teams that they root for, it's not surprising that someone would act like other posters play for the teams. (I don't think that you're guilty of saying "we", though, Dr T.)

Newz on Bret Hart in HOF and more

Why doesn't Vince just give him a bullshit apology, induct him into the HOF, make the $$ off the Hart marks and then say, "my apology was bullshit. I screwed him in '97 and I screwed him again."? And then laugh all the way to the bank.

    NHL Thread

To show how callous I am, the first thing I said was, 'Maybe he'll have to miss the rest of the year and the B's can just quietly buy him out of his deal in the offseason.' I'd like to say that I hope it's bad enough (and he's old enough) that it'll lead to his retirement, but I'm too strong of a believer in karma to say something like that.

    Best time of year

I'll probably get banned for saying it, but my favorite sporting moment of the year used to be the final out of the World Series. Now that ESPN covers the post-World Series hype and hot-stove "action" as a real sport, it's kind of lost it's luster for me. That time of the year still coincides with the thick of the football season and is still pretty early in the hockey season (before I realize that the Bruins are pretenders more than contenders) so I guess that's still my favorite time of the year.

    NFL Playoffs

Most Pats fans used the brutal string of injuries as the excuse, not the bye week. The timing of the bye week was pretty much secondary in the excuses list. The ironic thing is that most Pats fans wanted Indy this weekend instead of in the AFC Championship game (pending both teams winning this weekend, of course). So most fans wanted the Colts immediately after the bye, even though that's the way it worked in the regular season, too. Now that he's older and banged up it is. When he was a younger, fatter idiot doing his little dance after a 3 yard run, it wasn't as joyful. Count me among those looking forward to him hanging up the spikes.

Out of curiousity, what logic gaps did you notice?

    Hostel:

The original TCM was creepy. The sequels, The Next Generation, and the remake, not so creepy. Henry was creepy because of the realism of it all. The Birds ... well, let's just agree to disagree on that. Neither Ichi nor Suicide Circle bothered me. I found the lactation stuff in Visitor Q more disturbing than anything in either of those movies. Both are just too over the top to really bother me. Baise Moi disturbed me more than either.

Looking back at the PWI Awards: Part 1

Unless my memory is off by a year, wasn't Lawler the unified champion in '88, and thus was in the USWA, Continental and the AWA, and thus was on ESPN weekly? He had that huge bloodbath versus Kerry Von Erich at a PPV, and was hugely over as a heel. Makes sense that someone that was part of a potentially revolutionary occurrence (organizations working together to create a larger federation) would be rated so highly. Of course, politics fucked it all up and left us with Larry Zbyszko, world champ. Thanks, Verne!

    OAO NY Revolution Thread 8/1/2006

It's been pointed out repeatedly that the people that think that Ashley looks like a tranny have most likely never seen a tranny. Is she gorgeous? No. But she looks nothing like a guy. That "joke" is the dumbest, most over-used joke I can think of. /thinks of the "best (or worst) whatever of the year!" jokes that were every other page of this thread. Strike that: "Ashley is a man!" is the second dumbest, most over-used joke I can think of.

    Hostel:

I said it in the other Hostel thread: this isn't supposed to be a standard horror film. It's supposed to be (I think) an American version of the Asian Extreme genre. Compare it to Visitor Q or Ichi the Killer (both of which were laugh out loud at points, and weren't intended to be scary films) rather than a normal horror flick.

    oAo Hostel Thread

I saw it today ... 11:55 is way too early for a horror film matinee, but I wanted to see it without missing much of the football game, so it had to be done. I liked it. It was as comparable to the Asian Extreme genre as any American film I can think of. Roth & Miike having cameos was cool, and a nice tip-of-the-cap by Roth to the director that he's been most influenced by (or rips off the most, for the cynical among us). The violence was relatively understated in my opinion, which is understandable in a major-US-release. I'm presuming that there were scenes that Roth would have included if it wasn't a major release, and that they will end up on the DVD release. There were more titty shots than I'd have anticipated (not that I'm complaining, mind you). In regards to comparing it to Cannibal Holocaust or Dead Alive: I hate to say it, but it's comparing apples to oranges so it would relly do justice to any of the films. I can say that the only violence that I really remember from CH was the killing of the animals, so I will say that it's more violent than that. I'd compare this movie with Audition more than TCM, CH, or DA, in that both had long builds for surprisingly minimal violence/gore. (IMHO) Like reign said, it wasn't scary. But it wasn't supposed to be a scary horror film it was supposed to be a shock/extreme horror film. Like I said, Roth seems to be trying to recreate the Asian extreme genre in the US more than making a 'scary' movie. Milky, see it; you'll like it. Can someone remind me how to do spoilers? I have more to say, but don't want to say it in the open in case it's too spoiler-y for people that haven't seen it yet.
  18. While "David Kash" is a shitty name, it's better than a name that's a take-off on a musician that hasn't been relevant in years. I'm stunned no one suggested Johnny Kash.

    WWE Smackdown! Superstar Released

I could see not letting the guys go too far beyond the scripted duration. But they always have time to re-start matches. Unless this match went 10 minutes too long, I wouldn't think that going a bit long would be that horrible of an offense.

    WWE Smackdown! Superstar Released

It's kind of funny that the final straw was the fact that he went long in a match that's being taped for a future airing. Couldn't they let the wrestlers go a little long in a taping (which might actually improve the match & add to the crowd's enjoyment of the show) and then just edit it down to a managable time for the actual airing?

Yeah, Curtis was with HHH before Chyna, if my memory serves. And I don't mean that in a sexual way, I mean it as a ringside second.

    Godparents

It's neither a necessary practice OR a dying tradition. It's definition has changed over time, but it still happens more often than not, I think. I'm the Godfather for my nephew, but I really don't treat him any differently than I do my niece. And I doubt that if my sister & her husband die I will be responsible for my nephew because he's my Godson ... I might be responsible for both, or neither, but it's not like they'd give me custody of my nephew and then give niece's Godfather (or Godmother) custody of her. And in terms of what it really means, I'll probably do things for him as he grows older that I won't do for her (e.g. take him to a Red Sox game or a Bruins game) and treat it as a Godfather/Godson thing.
