    Rotten.com

I find consumptionjunction to be the better source of ugliness and stomach wrenching pics & vids. Rotten kind of seemed stagnant after a while. Having said that, though, I haven't been to either lately.

    Official College Football thread

I touched on it in my post a few minutes ago, but didn't extrapolate on it as much as I could have or should have. I think it all depends on the age of the people that are being asked. When I was younger, UNLV was a pretty big college basketball powerhouse. So, if someone told me to name 20 college programs, I'd most likely name them over a team like Arizona, who I think is pretty big now. Only because one team was strong at a time that I was more impressionable. If someone watched a ton of college football in the 70s or 80s, teams like USC or OSU would dominate their memories. To kids that are only 15 years old now, they've never seen USC be dominant and only saw OSU get really good lately. It all depends on how old you are, and that's who you know about or associate with a certain sport.

    Official College Football thread

The only thing that takes the sting of my CSU Rams getting shelled - at home no less! - and plummeting off the charts is the fact that the Buffaloes have fallen almost as far, almost as fast. I'd obviously rather watch my team win, but watching a hated team lose is almost as good. And I've got to disagree with pinjockey's assertion that OU or USC wouldn't get named by anyone on the East Coast. Most people that are older than 30 grew up on teams like Southern Cal (dominant in the 70s) and OU (dominant in the 80s). They'd get as much mention as OSU (dominant in the 70s) or Miami (dominant in the late 80s, 90s). All 4 of those teams would get named before a lot of East Coast teams, I'd think (certainly above any of the Virginia teams, or North Carolina or NC State, and most likely above the random Mississippi's of the world)

    22 Greatest Bands

AoO, I'm unsure if you picked Bathtub Gin and YEM at random, or if you picked them for a certain reason, but both of those songs are both known for their musical content and not their lyrical content. Both of those songs are old (both were written in the 80s and early 90s) and were written at a time when the non-sensical lyrics were part of the show. Most of their newer songs focus on lyrics and thus would puncture holes in your theory. Are the lyrics in YEM asinine? Yes, but the fans at the shows don't listen to an epic 20+ minute song for the 2 minutes with lyrics ... the lyrics are just a small part of the song itself. And the cynic in me wonders how deep and insightful the lyrics are in a Agoraphobic Nosebleed song, or a Dying Fetus song. Different strokes for different folks.

The OAO NFL Week 3 thread

Crazy or not, I think that Henry would look pretty good in a Pats uniform next season. The Patriots could use a real back (no offense to Kevin Faulk, but it's obvious the team has no faith in him as a #1 back) and it would add another level to the burgeoning New England/Buffalo rivalry.

I've been to Buffalo a few times ... and nothing I've done has been as fun as knocking boots with a 15 year old.

Week 3 Pick Results for Braves/kkk contests

0 and 3, baby ... things aren't looking good so far. If I lose again next week, I'm going to start using less thought and just picking by names alone (e.g. Patriots vs. Redskins ... well, the Patriots basically decimated the Natives and stole their country, thus New England should win.)

How should the NHL address its myriad of problems?

As much of a hockey fan as I am, I don't think that it will ever reach the level of appeal that basketball, football, or baseball. There are a few reasons for this ... 1) Too many non-Americans ... with the dominance of French-Canadians, and the influx of players from the former Soviet countries, there are just too many players with hard to pronounce names for the average fan. Just look at Atlanta, Heatley gets a ton more press than Kovalchuk, even though more people think Ilya is going to be the bigger star. Baseball might have a large number of Latino players, but a name like "Martinez" or "Ramirez" is much more common in American society than "Samsonov". 2) Too regional-ized ... fans in New Mexico, or Nebraska, or Mississippi, won't want to sit down and spend three hours watching too random teams play a game, the way they would with a football or baseball game. Hockey has historically been more popular in certain regions (Michigan, Minnesota, New England, etc) 3) Too ignored by ESPN ... just try and watch for hockey highlights on an episode of Sportscenter. You get maybe 2-3 minutes, and not until about 25-35 minutes into the hour. You get basketball highlights, golf, NASCAR, and either football/baseball (depending on the time of the year) before you get any mention of a hockey game. And can anyone tell me what night was "National Hockey Night" last year on ESPN? It was Wednesday 2 seasons ago, but when ESPN got the NBA they switched it, and only played on random nights. Their reason was that "too many games turned off the audience, so we didn't want to saturate the market" ... but why play baseball 5 nights a week, multiple games a night?!? 4) Boring rules ... cut down on the hooking, clutching, interference and let the players play. Cut down on the instigator rules and let the players police themselves. Stop this "the goalies are untouchable" when they leave crap, and they won't leave the net 30 times a game to play the puck. It's a beautiful game when it's played right, let's let them play it right. 5) Gary Bettman ... his grandiose intentions of making another NBA has been a horrible blow to the league. There's too many teams, too many teams in the WRONG places. Too many stupid innovations to "help" the game. Too many rule changes. It's driven off the old time fan without attracting the casual one. There's a ton of other things, but I think I've ranted too long already.

    SmartMarks Fantasy Hockey?

If you guys need another person, I'll take over the default team. The only reason that I didn't join the league initially is because of work - I can go online in bits and pieces during the day, but would most likely get fired if I spent an afternoon doing a mock fantasy hockey draft. And I should probably ask how horrible the default team is before asking if I can have them.

    Top earning tours of 2003

Are you saying that Kiss/Aerosmith should have been listed as one of the big money makers, but was purposely left off the list by MTV? What would they gain from doing that??? And it's not like the list is made up of MTV-darlings ... I mean, Phish? Elton John & Billy Joel? Fleetwood Mac?

    Raven as a world champion...

In a place like TNA, then most definitely would be World Title material. In a place like WWE or the old WCW, then I'd say Raven is the perfect secondary title holder. Give the mid-card a good angle to run while the main-eventers run their own.

    Smackdown Spoilers

"The Blue Blazer fell 50 feet from the top of the arena to his death however his partner the white turtleneck was not harmed." That's hilarious. I don't know if it's just that I'm a callous prick or something, but Kilbourn's joke isn't too offensive to me, nor is the Ritter reference in the rap. A little distasteful? Yes. But overly offensive? Not at all. A day after Owen died and 4 days after Ritter died. Neither was buried and "HEY, ITS JOKE TIME!" That is offensive. The Ritter one is worth than the Blue Blazer joke ... because the way he said it, it wasn't an "Owen Hart" joke, it was a play on words meaning a jacket that happened to be a certain color (a blazer that was blue) that are often worn with white turtleneck's. The Ritter one was a blatant rip on a real person that really died. But, still, it doesn't offend ME. Ripper, it offends you, so to you it is offensive. But to me, who's not offended by it, it's NOT. Neither opinion is right, neither is wrong. They're just different. And this isn't some attempt at posturing "oooh, look at me being un-PC" ... it's the way that I feel, and the way that I am. One of my closest friends killed himself in high school, and people made jokes that day. Did it piss me off? Hell yeah. Did it offend me? No.

    Brits! Please torture David Blaine!

Gert, I had the same thing happen. Literally took a double-take at that sentence before I realized what it actually said. In my opinion, the only shit around that spectacle is the one that locked himself in a box as a publicity stunt. Fuck David Blaine. Admit it. He made your watch disappear on a street trick one day and didn't give it back. I know you are still angry but LET IT GO... But really, whats all the hate on Blaine for. He does stupid stuff that only hurts himself. He's like Jackass only more boring. Yes, my watch was taken, but it was those damn Penn & Teller jokesters ... Damn them straight to hell! For some reason David Blaine is just one of those people that inspires rage in me. He just seems so full of himself, and people that are that pompous infuriate me. His heavily edited TV shows never impressed me, his tricks of human endurance don't impress me now, but yet, just like herpes he seems to periodically make an appearance.

Dark is home and white is away?

It's too long of an article to post, so I'll avoid doing that, but this article explains the whole story ... http://www2.nhl.com/onthefly/news/2003/08/146548.html Not all teams are doing it, so Max might be SOL about seeing the oldschool Penguins unis. Personally, I'm praying that the Canucks go with the Cooperalls for their retro uniform.

Dark is home and white is away?

To show that not all of the NHL's ideas are horrible, they're having about half a dozen teams wear old-school, throwback jerseys this year. It's all marketing, rather than actually honoring the league's history, but if it encourages people to think the NHL is cool, I'm all for it. Plus, the Devils are going to wear the old Colorado Rockies sweater, which I think is a pretty dope looking uniform. Still, Bettman sucks.

  25. meh ... nothing special. Some of the girls were cute, but cute if you saw them working randomly at a Starbucks. Not cute enough to be seen in Playboy. Other than the College Issues (Girls of the SEC, or PAC, or whatnot) they should avoid doing these types of issues. Even the Girls of the Real World/Road Rules was a letdown. Sorry, but seeing Beth the bitch from the LA season was pretty low on my list of things to do.
