  1. rowdy-fans2.jpg

That poor flower pot. That's about the extent of the "rioting" last night (along with some storefront windows). Fortunately, the Deadspin post I got that picture from has a link to some real "celebrations".

Holy shit I think I see one black guy in the way back of that crowd.

    There's also no women.

I guess Boston is sexist as well as racist.

  2. Pete Maravich? Meh. Probably not.

You do realize it's the basketball HOF and not just the NBA HOF, right?

And you do realize that Maravich averaged like 44 points a game for his entire NCAA career, and led the nation in scoring all three years he was in school, right?. Even if Maravich had never played in the NBA, he would be worthy of enshrinement.

  3. Paul Pierce can't be a Hall of Famer. He wasn't even a Hall of Famer before this. Does the Basketball HOF just let anybody in or what?

Makes no sense, Czech. He wasn't one before, but then led a team to a championship and was named MVP. So while I agree that he wasn't a HOF'er before, I don't see how that's relevant to him being one now. Lots of players "earn" their HOF-candidacy based on a single postseason. Having said that, I'd agree that he's borderline (at best) at this point - but the likelihood of going in increased a lot because of the last month or so of basketball.

    The Celtics were mediocre

False, the Celtics were pitiful, amongst the worst in the league. "Mediocre" would be a stretch.

then they got three mercenaries in one offseason

Allen, Garnett, and who? And it's not like it's easy to pick up "mercenaries" - they gave up most of their young talent to acquire those players. They didn't just overpay for them, they traded assets for assets.

and they were expected to win, and then they did. I don't think amazing happened here.
"Expected to win"?!? They were underdogs going into the championship round, and in most (if not all) of the games. Doesn't sound like they were expected to win to me. I think a lot of people were expecting them to do what the Lakers did when they loaded up with Malone & Payton: get there and not win.

  4. I really couldn't decide if this player was worth picking now, but I really need a 4th defensemen, and since we're going by "the player at his best & healthiest", I figure it's tough to pass on a defensemen that scored 34 goals in a season (and I think he added another 45 assists or so that year).

The Northern Lights Five are proud to select Kevin Hatcher, defensemen, to the organization.

  5. re: Hossa ... At least re-signing with Pittsburgh would keep him away from Montreal, which has been rumored as his landing spot much as (if not more than) Pittsburgh or Boston. The bad news, though, is that it means that Chia might go overboard in a bidding war to land him, and I wouldn't be thrilled at signing him for $8m (or more) per season).

re: Wheeler ... I just want to echo what Max said, it feels good to see a player with options choose Boston as a destination. Seeing him and Lucic on the ice at the same time? It might be enough to make Bostonians care about hockey again.

  6. Even though the well of great/very good defensemen is starting to run dry, I want to add one more forward before I go back to worrying about my blue line, and who better than a 70 goal scorer, a guy that averaged over 40 goals/season while with the Kings, a guy that whose run near the top could have lasted longer if LA didn't deal him to NYC ... the Northern Lights Five are proud to welcome Bernie Nicholls to the organization.

  7. At first, ALL tag teams are makeshift. But then, they grow on the fans, and become staples in the wrestling world.

That's not really the point I was making, I was saying that I hate makeshift tag teams that are just two wrestlers thrown together for no reason other than they are both faces/heels.

While it's painfully frustrating when it's two guys that were just in a blood feud, I think sometimes something as simple as a common goal (e.g. wanting to hurt a certain wrestler) or the proverbial "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is enough.

Whether either of those classify as "both are faces" or "both are heels", I'm not sure ... but it can be something as simple as "we both hate X, let's get together and take care of him".

  8. Cam Neely meet

    samuelson.jpg

    Ulf Samuelsson!

Note to self: Pick a real, true enforcer to beat the living shit out of Ulfie when the Five play against UndertakerHart's team. Yes, Neely will want to do so himself - again - but I don't want my top-line RW spending 5 minutes in the box for fighting, or 5-10 in the house of corrections for aggravated assault. Let a 4th line goon go to jail.

  9. In Dama's defense, Matt, the fact that you included "and I don't recall you ever publicly supporting them before this season" gave the impression that you were trying to call him out on bandwagon jumping. I don't think you were, but I can see why someone would interpret your question as more than a simple "why?"

  10. Congrats to KG and Ray for picking up their first rings in a couple of days. But fuck Paul Pierce. He has now usurped LeBron and Nash as my least favorite player in the NBA. I can't stand when talented guys flop around and whine like bitches all the time. Leave that shit to the Europeans and Manu.

If only Pierce was as stoic as Kobe Bryant ... that guy never whines or complains about calls.

  11. Wait, Jingus: did you really try to compare the "violence" from movies or tv shows with the "violence" of pro wrestling?

Shows like The Shield, or movies like the Bond flicks, don't even pretend to be real; it's 100% recognized as being fake, with actors participating in the violence. Wrestling, on the other hand, still pretends to be real. Yes, I know that 'kayfabe' is a grey area, and there are times that they acknowledge that it's not real ... but more often or not, they pretend that the punches are real, that moves actually hurt, etc. Most of us are smart enough to recognize that it's all a work, but they try to maintain a level of reality that you won't find in a TV show or a movie.

Plus, it's an angle in pro wrestling ... why are you trying to point out the flaws in it? Why not focus on how stupid it is for someone to bounce back on an Irish Whip?

  12. Unless I'm mistaken, Treble's 12 hours are up ...

With the (whatever pick this is), the Northern Lights Five would like to welcome Howie Morenz, center, to the organization.

    number7.gif

Considered hockey's first true "superstar", he played a huge role in establishing the NHL in the US. Injuries shortened his career, but when he was healthy, he was one of the best point producers in a defense-first league. A couple of Harts, a couple of Art Ross's. Voted #15 in The Hockey News' 100 Greatest Players.

  13. That's a good pick. I don't actually remember him hitting 90+ assists twice, just the year Cheechoo won the Richard.

As much as saying this makes me throw up in my mouth ... he also had 90+ assists in the season that he was given away to SJ (the year he carried Cheechoo to the Richard) and then surpassed 90 the next year as well, his first full season with the Sharks.

But, hey, the Bruins have a 2nd line winger (earning $3.5m with a no-trade clause), a checking line winger, and an (at best) number 4 d-man to show for that trade, so who am I to complain?

  14. I wanted to grab another playmaker with this pick. And was hesitant to go with another active player, but this player's assists stats are just too good to pass up. (no pun intended)

With my next pick, I'd like to welcome Joe Thornton to the Northern Lights Five.

    joe.jpg

    - Makes good players look great, so will hopefully make great players look, ummm, greater

    - Only the 3rd player to pick up 90+ assists in consecutive seasons (the other two are a pair of nobodies, Wayne Something-or-Other and a French guy named "Mario")

    - 1 time Hart winner, 1 time Art Ross winner

    - Not nearly as bad in the postseason as people like to pretend

I'm content with Thornton anchoring my second line.

  15. While I agree that it's a bit over the top to start talking about Divine Intervention or angels or anything, it's insane to say "he ended up not being hurt, so he's a pussy for erring on the side of caution". At the time of the injury, he thought that he was more injured than he was in reality. Happens all the time. Players lie on the floor, writhing in pain, and end up not even leaving the court or needing any real assistance.

And the tears, in my biased Boston eyes, were more "I can't believe I finally got to the NBA Championship and I might be too hurt to even finish one game" ... not tears of pain.

And not for nothing, the NBA is the league that had a player carried off the court with a broken nose a few years ago. And Dwayne Wade leaving the court in a wheelchair because of a shoulder injury. To have a player be treated with extra care isn't really new or shocking.

  16. After we, the viewers, were led to believe that he died going through the electric fence around New Otherton. There was at least one false-alarm with him.

Are you saying there's some ambiguity over whether Mikhail is really dead or not? The dude is 100% dead.

No, I'm well aware that he's dead now.

But there were two 'false alarms' about him being dead, first when he was shoved into the electric fence and then when he was shot in the chest, with a spear gun, while in the Looking Glass. Both of those incidents were more concrete (less ambiguous) than Jin being on or near the freighter when it blew up, and yet both turned out to be non-lethal injuries.

So to re-re-word my original point: Unless the powers-that-be explicitly say "So-and-so is dead, he's not coming back" it's difficult to say with any uncertainty if they're really dead or not. And since they haven't said that Jin is dead (or not dead), I'm firmly in the "he's not dead" camp.

  17. There are a few forwards that I want more than this player, but the really good defensemen are dropping like flies, so I'm bumping him up on my board and taking him now.

With my 8th pick, I'd like to welcome Dit Clapper to the Northern Lights Five. Please note: Clapper will be patroling the blue line for the Five.

    ditclapper.jpg

    - Longevity: One of the first players to play 20 years in the NHL

    - Versatility: Played both defense and forward, and played both well enough to be named to the All-Star squad at both positions

    - Leadership: Set the record for longest reign as team captain, only recently surpassed by Stevie Y & Bourque

    - Importance: The guy was a Bruin, which obviously makes him awesome ... but he was also given props in Slapshot as being "Olde Tyme Hockey"

  18. He died w/ the grenade.

After we, the viewers, were led to believe that he died going through the electric fence around New Otherton. There was at least one false-alarm with him.

I'm pretty sure that Sawyer kicked another one of the foot soldiers and not Keamy when he was talking to Kate... that would mean that he was never "definitely" dead. I think it's completely different from Mikhail.

The way it was presented, though, I think we were all supposed to presume that he was dead when he was shot in the back by Richard. The way it was shown, we were supposed to think he was dead then.

And I think I should have worded my post differently when I said "They were pretty definitive about Mikail being dead ... and Keamy being dead". What I was trying to say was that unless they specifically suggest that someone is dead, there's no way to be sure if they are. Both Mikhail & Keamy were seemingly dead and neither were, so since there is some ambigiuity about Jin's survival, I'm leaning towards the "he's still alive" side.

  19. Ratings Info: ... Cup Runneth Over

Should the 7.02 million viewers hold, Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals would be the most watched NHL telecast since Game 7 of the Mighty Ducks/Devils Finals drew 7.2 million viewers in 2003.

And across the board, ratings are up compared to last year. I'm presuming some of it is because there are two US teams, and neither of them are recent expansion teams. But regardless why the ratings were up, it's good to see that people were tuning in.

  20. He made a comeback a couple of years ago with a VH1 reality show, that led up to him doing his coming out of retirement show, and it sold out an auditorium. The show had decent ratings, and Dice still had it.

Wait, what? I thought that his VH1 show was going to lead to him "playing Giants Stadium" ... and that nothing ever came of it. Where did he perform as a result of that show? (Not trying to call you out on anything, legitimately uncertain if he ended up actually accomplishing by doing the show)

I know he had a somewhat big comeback a few years ago when he was paired with Opie & Anthony (I think he played MSG, although not anywhere near a sell-out) but I didn't think he had much success after the 'reality' show.

  21. Maybe the writers/producers just want us to think that he's dead, so when he has his reunion with Sun (when the always-exciting O6 make it back to the island) it'll be more special or surprising or something.

They were pretty definitive about Mikail being dead ... and Keamy being dead ... and yet both of them came back for one more go-around. So saying with any real conviction that Jin is alive or dead is difficult.

  22. But in all seriousness, that was a great game and a heart-attack-inducing ending. God, this is a great shot in the arm for the sport. Hank getting recognition, Lidstrom getting another big check-mark against his name (The first European born and raised to lead a team to the Stanley Cup, as apparently some guy out of Odessa who was raised from infancy in Canada lead Chicago to it in 1938), and (FINALLY!) the Wings finally cap off a season the right way.

Finally! The long drought is over!! These last 5 seasons must have been brutal for you Wings fans.

Sorry to bust balls, but when your team has won 4 in like 11 seasons, it's tough to see a "Finally" and not make jokes. Try being a Bruins fan or a Leaf fan who hasn't gotten to see a Cup celebration in their life time. (Especially a Leafs fan, I'd say ... at least us B's fans have seen our team play for a Cup)

EDIT: And having said that, congrats to the Wings fans. Your boys really did deserve the Cup this year, they were the best team all along and deserved the win.

  23. So because they did it, it's OK for Ol' Neddy to blatantly take a joke someone else said, say "Hey...replace 'fucker' with Beaner, and we got a new joke!," and say said joke on his TV show like he made it up? C'mon. Denis Leary, Bill Hicks, Robin Williams, and Milton Berle may have "stolen" the joke, but they all made it their own because they're TALENTED.

It's funny that Leary & Hicks were mentioned side-by-side, seeing as the former stole the latter's act every bit as blatantly as Mencia's thefts have been.

Unless you mean "yelling the punchlines instead of just saying them", I don't see how Leary made any of it "his own". He just retold another person's jokes (sometimes in the same words) and pretended that they were his own.
