Same exact problem, Bruiser. Been looking for that one for a while.

I can feel the Wake upset coming. That would be hilarious and awesome.
-
That pun was fucking inspired. I was gonna try something about a timpani but it wasn't good enough.
-
Also, fuck them for having Juliet grab a copy of the Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues and then having..."Downtown" play? I wanted "This Must Be The Place." I did like fish biscuit a lot, though.

First scene was great. Everything else was eh. You all know I'm tired of flashbacks, but I'm especially tired of Jack flashbacks. Here's hoping this breaks open quickly. I'm not expecting "5 resolutions per episode," but I do want a show that reminds me of the first season where not every single thing was some weird cipher. Remember, when the characters were intriguing, and the show was more than a gratuitous mindfuck? All the obvious psychological games they're playing feel like 4-8-15-16-23-42 all over again. I guess our big three are lost in a different way now.

Fine, we'll talk about the Killers. Here ya go: I enjoy dancing to "Somebody Told Me" when I'm drunk and I thought "Mr. Brightside" was okay until I saw the video, which made me roll my eyes more than was healthy and will forever be associated with the music. They strike me as a completely passionless band in everything I've seen them say and do, particularly live performances. The debut falls off hard after the first few tracks, but I don't mind those songs. And finally, nothing I've heard off the new album has changed my general opinion of them. Won't begrudge them their success, though they really need to do something about that facial hair.

The movie's one of the best in recent years. Completely detached look at failures, daddy issues, and the weird subculture that is Texas high school football. Fantastic music, tone, everything. It's the inverse of your typical sports movie. The pilot did a good job emulating the look, sound, and mood of the movie, but I wonder if it'll be a little more rah-rah since it's hard to sustain that for a whole season of episodes. I'll watch for a while, at least.

I downloaded the new Decemberists last night, haven't listened to it yet. Thought about going to see them again at the end of the month, but one $25 student-theater session is probably enough. They are fun live, but I imagine the shtick isn't as endearing the second time around. On Stevie: I dig Songs in the Key of Life. Especially "All Day Sucker."
-
And not enough to "Van Diemen's Land," which I also really dig and which doesn't sound like a U2 song at all. That's part of why I like Rattle and Hum: there's a bunch of stuff that feels unique and out of place for them. The other part is that it's so relentlessly cheesy and probably the peak of Bono's retardation on record ("Artists...against...apartHEID!"). Oh, and "All I Want Is You," which is just wonderful.
-
"I'm sorry kid. I don't have anything against you. But they do." He's linked to somebody, at least.

Okay cheesy mustachioed guitarist, play the blues!

Listened to it twice so far. Really like it. Not as varied as Separation Sunday, much more consistently rocking. "Party Pit" is a highlight and there are a handful of moments here that feel really reminiscent of the Replacements' Tim to me, at least in attitude.
-
I just picked up what was apparently one of very few copies of this in the DC metro area. I loved Separation Sunday, so I have high hopes. Opinions forthcoming.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Edwin MacPhisto replied to USC Wuz Robbed!'s topic in Television & Film
There's plenty of distinction between branches of "TV is serious business." I don't think too many people checking out a watered-down X-Men are gonna be that excited about a transplanted West Wing about SNL. This show needs to stop showing the sketches. They're worse than what shitty sketch comedy shows air now. I don't know why Sorkin's insisting on this route; if a West Wing episode was about getting three senators to switch their votes, there wasn't a lame montage showing speeches in chambers or the actual vote. -
I think it's kind of dumb to make Mahone a really fucked-up, willing-to-kill anti-hero type, since we already have about 30 of them on this show, but it's a lot better than having him be supersmart know-everything guy. One thing that can always be said of Prison Break: it delivers payoffs. Getting to be too much too soon now, but at least it doesn't spend half a season wandering around.
-
I guarantee you that, whatever it is, it pays better than radio. Pay scale is important, but remember, wherever you're going you're going with minimal experience and starting right at the bottom. No matter how good or talented you are, it'll be a while before your pay is commensurate with your ability, and that goes for any job. I work for a firm in DC and I'm not getting paid enough at my job, but I've only been here four months. I'll get my chance to get more cash when they review me before the end of the year. Just approach whatever you do with that perspective and you'll be fine.

What was your mileage on Superwolf? I drifted in and out of liking that one, and settled on it being perfectly acceptable, but not great. I've downloaded The Letting Go but have (finally) been listening to too much metal to let Billy in.
-
Listen to it yet? It's real good. I think the title track is stunning.

I was on the phone with my dad when he dropped that fantastic touchdown right into Berrian's arms. He stopped mid-sentence to say "Wow. Grossman is really good." We agreed we'd easily take him over 2/3 of the other QBs in the league. Orton was a great game manager last year, but when Grossman's on, he really transforms them into something else. Also, I don't think the Raiders are going 0-16. No one goes 0-16. They'll win some ugly turnover-filled game 13-10, possibly even against some playoff contender's second string in the closing weeks of the year.

When I saw Tool about four years ago, at the peak of my interest in them (like you, it's waned substantively, to the point that I don't think I've listened to anything of theirs in at least two years), I remember having a great time. I saw them twice, actually. They were some of the first concerts where I really saw a band playing immersive music. I think Agent put it well when, a few months back, he called them entry-level music for much, much better weird stuff down the road. I think I'd be bored out of my skull seeing them now, especially out on the lawn. For something like a Tool show--something that I think even the band would acknowledge is really overblown--you've got to be in the midst of it, unable to focus on anything beyond the music and the mass of bodies. The moment you catch sight of a hot dog vendor or something like that, it goes from being okay to retarded.

I did a doubletake when I saw his stat line. Simply amazing. I remember him being impressive last year but he's gone to otherworldly levels this year.
-
Oh, and completely inexplicably, the Coaches' poll has VT ahead of Georgia Tech. It really should all just be decided by robots.
-
Whoever's voting WVU #1 needs to lose their votes. UF's only 2 points behind WVU, so a win against LSU next week will take them at least to #4. I believe Michigan's gaining ground too.
-
And that was Vince Young just leading a very nice 2-minute drill. How about that.

I like them all right, especially when a song of theirs comes up randomly on my iPod. And I really adore both "The Rat" and "Little House of Savages." I haven't heard any of this, though, and judging by your description, won't.
