    Help me stock my bar

I prefer Tanqueray to Bombay as far as gin goes. A bottle of Chopin or Grey Goose vodka is extremely high class and makes a nice conversation piece, too, if it's gonna be a visible bar. And a fifth of Hennessey--nice bottle, great cognac. Or a handle of Aristocrat Peach Schnapps. There's your class.

    outkast

Listened to Idlewild a few times so far. It's the only Outkast album that hasn't sunk into my brain immediately on first listen. I'll need to drive around with it a few times to really get a feel for it. A few songs are great, and I think the approach to the instrumentals/production/whatever you want to call Outkast backing tracks are incredibly interesting, if not completely head-bobbingly awesome. It's the most chill, relaxing rap album I've heard in a while, which I like very much, and which also leads me to believe that it'll be a slow burner and seep in gradually. "Morris Brown" and "The Train" are my big winners so far, as good as anything they've done.

Spring college football practices are starting...

That'd be a huge get for Nebraska if he had more than one year of eligibility left. I'm not sure how useful he'll be if Nebraska's trying to develop someone younger, but it can't hurt to have him.

    Most Overall Title Reigns!

Silent's not that surprising when you think about it, since so much of what he did was based around storylines (and infamously no-showing). See, I just won all the titles before I started focusing heavily on stories and no-showing. King only winning one always surprised me. But the character was good enough that he didn't really need them to always seem impressive in way or another.

    Top 10 Oregon Albums

To the best of my knowledge they consider Portland home, though I know Olympia figures into their history somehow. I made the Quasi connection because that was Janet Weiss' band (and she's the drummer for Sleater-Kinney).

Tennessee doesn't deserve to be any higher since it's essential the same team that ate ass last season. I certainly don't expect anything like that again and they'll probably win 9 games but I completely understand why they're at the far end of the top 25. Virginia Tech is solid everywhere but QB, which is a question mark. This team looks a lot like Bryan Randall's 2004 team, minus of course the super-player that was Randall (which will likely be the difference between that superb year and 8-4). The VT o-line is also thin, but that starting 5 is good. I'd have them hovering around #20 myself if forced to rank 'em.

    Let It B(l)e(ed)

Sticky Exile Beggar's Their Majesty's and...uh...Some Girls? Not in any order, but I'd guess those are 1-5. I do like the Replacements' Let It Be more than either.

    Top 10 Oregon Albums

I'M BEEFIN No, I get that this is a joke thread (or should be), but I think it's funny that you have the Quasi album on there without Sleater-Kinney. Big Oregon city draws you in, dammit.

Anyone got too many video game systems?

Dama lives with his girl? Get out of there, dude. I hardly play video games at all any more, but I might get the new Nintendo just for the hell of it. No way I'll spend $600 on something I'd use infrequently, even though I have been a Sony guy since '97.

Pasquarelli's pro-NFL list is incredibly boring and part of why I like college so much more.

    The Descent

Saw it this weekend. -The "jump scares" criticism is kinda silly since almost every scene in the film is constructed to allow for that sort of thing to happen. The timing of the edits is really awkward and dread-inspiring. I thought the selection of jumps was good. -Liked it a lot. The claustrophobic cave stuff was absolutely terrifying. First 45 minutes were expertly shot and freaky as hell. Overall it was one of the better horror movies I've seen recently, and certainly one of the most clever with regards to gender, Final Girl tradition, and all that fun Kristeva/Bataille/Caruth stuff that makes dissecting horror movies a kick. -Would have liked it better if For the same tonal reasons, I like the UK ending a little better. Good arguments could be made for both. -After the second scene of the movie ( ), someone two rows behind me said "THAT'S wassup." Funniest fucking thing I've heard in weeks.

Having to check the bag that holds your shampoo isn't losing an essential liberty. That being said, I'm glad I'm not flying anywhere till Thanksgiving. What a pain in the ass.

    Book recommendations

I have a master's in English literature and I've never read Catcher in the Rye. I think I'm too old for it now, judging by what everyone tells me.

  18. Calling "Lieberman" likable by anyone is a joke. He's a national loser as a VP and presidential hopeful, enjoys the censorship of harmless media, and has devolved into a parrot for the executive branch, which shouldn't be the role of any senator, democrat or republican. He might still win the senate race, but I doubt it. He's going to be the BUTT of every talkshow comedian's jokes for the next 3 months and if he doesn't roll with it, he's toast. Good riddance, doofus.

    HDTV

I don't think I'm interested in a regular LCD. Projection or nothing; regular LCDs are ridiculously overpriced for the size and I find the depth of color lacking. I just looked at a 46" Samsung DLP in Best Buy two days ago along with a 42" Sony projection, so they exist as of now, at least. I imagine that for set, stand, and an upconverting DVD player, I'd like to not go much higher than $2000 pre-tax.

    World Trade Center

I wouldn't call Natural Born Killers a "straight-up film" if you're using kookiness as the barometer. And I think this looks really funny.

Spring college football practices are starting...

UVA's #1 receiver, Deyon Williams, has a stress fracture in his foot and may be out for the season. Motherfucker. He was easily the best WR we've had since 2002. Three consecutive running downs, here we come! Shitty broadcaster Jefferson Pilot Sports will only be televising ACC games this year--they will no longer broadcast an SEC game at 11:30 am. Too bad--they were always something like the 5th-choice SEC game for the week, but definitely the earliest football of the day.

Big difference to me is that USC has no one close to as good as Ohio State or OU on their schedule early and thus a much better chance of getting through the first 3/4 of the season unmarked. By the end of the year they'll probably be good enough to go toe-to-toe with Notre Dame or beat them. Additionally, Nebraska's only a contender because of how their schedule breaks. I do think they're one of the biggest stretches on that list, though. Enjoyed the whole feature quite a bit, though.

Who is the best, Marvin? I'll be in the market for one within the next 4-5 months and as far as images go, i've liked the Sony LCD projections more than the assorted DLPs. My dad's got the 70" inch Sony WEGA, which is gratuitous and possibly one of mankind's greatest inventions all at the same time. I'm open to other considerations, though, and probably looking for something in the 42"-46" range since I'm in a modest apartment.
