    Preach to me!

I don't see the point or supposed wit of doing that in a thread wherein someone actually establishes guidelines for what he likes, but whatever.

The Shield, season 5, official thread

Awesome start. Forest Whitaker is great already; I love the way his character seems to have an edge on everyone right off. All the little changes over the past six months--especially Julian as a training officer and Billings as a totally inept captain--seem to have great potential for the season.

    The Band

I like their work with Dylan, of course dig "The Weight" (are there people who don't?) and, inspired by this thread, picked up a used copy of the Music From Big Pink remaster today. Really good. I could see myself loving them a few albums down the road.

    Worst Song of 2005

The female violinist is pretty cute, in a sort of "I might have Down's syndrome" kind of way. I finally heard "My Humps" for the first time the other day. It's stupid, but I don't find it any more contemptible than their other singles. So it sucks, but not as much as, say, Toby Keith.

    Preach to me!

Corey's recommendation in this thread is uncannily as clueless as the one from last year's thread. If you dig on Antony's album, I'd recommend Nico's Chelsea Girl. Similar baroque, moody spirit about it. I'm sure you've heard a few of her songs; "These Days" and "Fairest of the Seasons" are the most likely, especially if you've seen The Royal Tenenbaums. I haven't heard the new Broken Social Scene yet, but I hear it's more lush/everything but the kitchen sink in terms of its arrangements. I don't know if you've listened to the new Animal Collective, Feels (you mentioned liking them in last year's thread), but it's really busy and might suit you. It's also more energetic than Sung Tongs, so you might get a similar sort of buzz from it that you can get from the first four tracks on the Bloc Party album. For similar reasons, I'm thinking you'd like Wolf Parade as well. The first half of Apologies to the Queen Mary is decent to good; the second half is fan-fucking-tastic and will have you doing cartwheels.

    NFL Playoffs

I don't think there's any perhaps about it. Garrard is probably the only one that could compete for that title. Either could start in a lot of places. I'd take Billy Volak over Garrard. I always forget that McNair is still stumbling through starts. Volek's definitely quality. Those guys are the top 3 then.

You're weird. Also, Palmer's leg gets bent in all sorts of awful ways on the second offensive play. Bengals are probably done, much as I like Kitna.

Marcus Vick gone from Va. Tech

I never intended to imply that the chance to go to college for free and get an education was Vick's "fantastic opportunity." That's the fantastic opportunity. He no longer deserves it. Of course Virginia Tech makes money off its athletes. It's just that, as you said, he no longer fits the profile of a person who gets to be the one off whom the school is profiting.

    Battlestar Galactica

I just caught a few episodes of this show in the mini-marathon yesterday, and watched the new episode tonight. Great stuff. Here's another show I need to catch up on, I guess.

Marcus Vick gone from Va. Tech

We aren't on scholarship at a public university and serving as one of its most visible faces. I don't hold athletes to any higher standard than I hold anyone else. Scholarship athletes? Yes. That's a fantastic opportunity and someone who fucks it up so regularly doesn't deserve it.

Marcus Vick gone from Va. Tech

He made enough young dumb guy mistakes to get suspended for a year--not a game or two, a year--and then continued to make dumb mistakes despite knowing he was on absolute thin ice. There's no one to blame but him. And really, it doesn't matter. His brother gave him a $1 million check for his birthday, and he'll have enough wealth from big brother to sit on his ass for the rest of his life. I don't think he ever throws an NFL pass.

Marcus Vick gone from Va. Tech

If that's the case, why the fuck was he playing in the Gator Bowl? That story broke last night on a lot of VT and UVA message boards. Blew my mind. Apparently the charges were held off until yesterday, so that he could play in the game. Good riddance to him. He was a pretty good player, but he was an embarrassment to his team and conference on and off the field, again and again. Way to go VT, for having the balls to clean up the program a bit.

Under. Who's going to admit that he or she's a front runner? Though the anonymity of a poll might make it possible.

    Your favorite college

You guys might not know this, but I graduated from Virginia. I don't think I've ever let on about that. Until I got to college, I pretty much didn't give a damn about college football. Now it's the only sport I really follow.

What else did you try? As soon as I get back up to school I'm going on a file-sharing binge through a few of those.

Keep going forward. Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are both gangbusters and ought to be in everybody's collections.

I love it, but I have very consistent and rational musical tastes. I got the Beta Band's The Three E.P.'s for Christmas. I think I like it quite a bit, but I can't yet listen to it all the way through. It's much more ambient than I expected.

Iggy's Final 2005/2006 College Football Rankings

I'm with iggy on this one. U of L played in the weakest BCS conference this season and, despite some decent out of conference ass-whoopings (Oregon State and UNC), lacks the resume of any other three loss team. Their best win all year was probably Rutgers or UNC, and they lost in both of their games against top programs, screwy calls or not. In my personal rankings I'd probably have them at about #23, maybe ahead of Michigan and Nebraska. I disagree a bit on the top 10--namely, LSU being any lower than #5, which is where I'd probably have them. Wins over four consensus top-20 programs--the most impressive array of victories, I'd argue, outside of Texas--and only one bad loss has got to at least push them ahead of Notre Dame. While the Irish pushed USC to the wire and played well against Ohio State, their best win on the year is over a 7-5 Michigan team. I'm all for playing well, but at some point you have to count the wins. 1. Texas 2. USC 3. Penn State (by inches) 4. Ohio State 5. LSU 6. West Virginia (this is the lowest team whose performance this season I consider elite) 7. Virginia Tech 8. Alabama 9. Georgia I don't know who I'd stick at 10. I'm wavering between Wisconsin (quiet year, strong finish), Auburn (beat Georgia and Alabama, and were playing better than any other SEC team through the last few games), and the Irish (schedule ended up easier than it looked initially, but played well all season and handed out ass-whoopings along the way).

    The Rose Bowl Thread

Not a very good school and there are more attractive women at other southern universities. Unless you're getting in on Bright Futures or Florida pre-paid (which, since you're in Miami, is very possible), aim higher. For free, that or UF are great. Actually, I'm trying to get accepted into their film school, which is top ten in the country, probably the best in this state. I've only lived out here for about a year, and am working on my bachelor's at the moment, so no Bright Futures here. Don't even know anything about Florida pre-paid, though it sounds interesting. You know, I almost included "unless you're going into film or theater" in my original post. That's a much different story, and I've had several friends go through FSU's film school and come out of it very happy. I already miss college football, guys. The NFL playoffs are only about half as good, and they'll only last for another month. Ho hum.

    The Rose Bowl Thread

That's exactly how I would have the top 6. 11-1 is great, as was the win over Georgia, but I can't comfortably put them above an Ohio State team whose losses are to #1 and #3 with wins over the rest of the Big Ten and Notre Dame, or an LSU team that beat Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Miami--4 top 20 teams. LSU and Ohio State survived tougher competition all year, and the fact that Louisville turned out to be good but not great leaves WVU without many big wins. Game of inches at the top.

Don't be too broken up. The name of your band was The Deepest Remorse. You can probably do better.

    The Rose Bowl Thread

Good game. Going for it on fourth down from midfield was a huge mistake, I thought, as USC had more than enough room to get off a good punt without even sniffing a touchback. I get the "go for the kill" mentality on the 4th and 2, but to try it without Bush even on the field was stupid. Texas had been focusing on containing him much of the night, and I think even a split backfield would have given USC the distraction they needed to get White that extra yard. After that, game over. Vince Young was astonishing, but I don't think this loss does anything to Reggie Bush's draft status. NFL guys don't give a shit about one game in which he averaged a mere 6.5 yards per carry and broke an astonishing touchdown run to the short side of the field. Replay tonight was, as mentioned by many others, poorly executed, chosen for very clear plays and not used for plays where it actually would have reversed a bad call. There was no rhyme or reason to it. It was the absolute flip side of last night's game, which was the best use of replay I've ever seen--checking plays during TV time outs, as other plays develop, and not taking longer than 30 or so seconds to make a confirmation. Not a very good school and there are more attractive women at other southern universities. Unless you're getting in on Bright Futures or Florida pre-paid (which, since you're in Miami, is very possible), aim higher. For free, that or UF are great.

What's the point of review if you're not going to review that? Awful.
