    BCS Standings 11/14

I'm just thrilled that the ACC will almost definitely not be sending Virginia out to Boise again this year. If Maryland qualifies, their reputation for miserable travel will probably make it their turn. Georgia Tech's been there recently, but 6-5 could send them there once more. If BC drops their final game to Maryland, and 2 of Clemson, Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Maryland finish 7-4, it could even be them. I don't know why the ACC renewed its contract with the Blue Turf Bowl; it doesn't pay recruiting dividends, and I'm hard-pressed to think of a shittier tie-in for a BCS conference. Every team would rather go at-large than there. Also, even if they go 10-1, I don't like Virginia Tech's odds on an at-large bid at this point. The big problem is that they've already played two of the likely conference champs in Miami and West Virginia, and so the Orange Bowl--which hosts the ACC or Big East champ--won't grab them with their match-up choice. I can only see the Sugar Bowl being somewhat interested since VT brought a shitload of fans last year, but by the time they get their choice, both at-large bids would likely have been used up by bowls looking to avoid West Virginia.

With Texas Tech falling into a hole of suck, the bizarro Sooners might end up in the Cotton Bowl. Wild. Also, if 'Bama wins the Iron Bowl, I think it might be just about impossible for them to miss out on a BCS bid. Out of the eligible at-large teams I can't think of anyone except Notre Dame who would bring nearly the quantity of fans/fanaticism this particular season.

    LOST

I think part of the problem is how slow this season has been moving chronologically. We're still only a few days ahead of where the first season ended, and will still be so even after this week's 7th episode. Maybe the security system's still sulking about that dynamite.

I'm not sure how I feel about WVU making it into the top 12. On one hand, it makes their likely automatic bid look pretty respectable, and should at least make me feel better about having to watch Miami/West Virginia or LSU/Georgia vs. West Virginia. On the other, it gives the Big East another bonus towards holding on to its automatic bid.

    The sports betting thread

Never have bet on sports. I feel like I'd be incredibly likely to crash and burn and then keep crashing and burning for a very long time.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 12

I'll do my picks later, but at a quick glance this looks like one of the most difficult pick-em weeks we've had.

    Remembrance/Veterans Day

Similarly, a friend of mine had major head-issues, had dropped out of college, and was obsessing over a 17 year-old chubby girl who had dumped him. He joined the Navy, and now he's learning to pilot nuclear subs. The military, they can be uplift party people when they need to.

Iggy's Week 10 College Football Rankings

I agree with your top 4, and since Ohio State's only losses have been to our #2 and #4 teams, it's tough to rank them much lower than #5. Either way, LSU and Ohio State would be my 5/6 in some order, and Ohio State's rough Big Ten slate probably puts them an inch above. I think Virginia Tech is a fairly safe #7 as long as they don't look like the Miami game the rest of the year, but I'm also going to keep 'Bama right after them, because this is still a really good team that has just as good a resume as Notre Dame and Auburn, and still has only one (overtime) loss. They lose in the Iron Bowl, then yeah, drop them; they win the Iron Bowl, and I'll have them leapfrog VT. I also still have Georgia above West Virginia, though I'm more convinced by the Mountaineers this week than last. TCU is a good Mountain West team and have the win over a (then very, very shitty) Oklahoma team, but I would probably not have them inside the top 20. Maybe they've been playing great and just haven't been able to see it, who knows. Also, while I like dropping those posers Texas Tech entirely, I think whichever team wins the OU/Texas Tech game will deserve a place at the end of the rankings, around #23-25. I'm also with Chris on FSU (2-3 over their last 5, with the losses getting progressively more embarrassing), though thinking about it it's tough to think of who'd go above them. Iowa State is playing great and I'll push them up, but I have a tough time moving up a BC team that's struggled similarly and lost to FSU, or a South Carolina team that's truly gotten mauled a couple times this year but has turned it on lately. FSU can stay juuuust inside the top 20 (especially since I'm probably dropping TCU), but South Carolina over Clemson would earn the Gamecocks a leapfrog unless FSU really, really annihilates Florida.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 11

Hey, I didn't know we could do bullet points. But Iggy is Georgia Tech--that was this week's match-up. I must be playing someone else along the way.

    Best Albums

Yeah. It wasn't a particular song, but I remember listening to Radiohead's The Bends one day towards the end of high school and thinking about halfway through "Just" "why the hell do I own a Dave Matthews album?" It was promptly sold.

This Week in College Football 11/8 - 11/12

Looks like the ACC will likely be the folks taking care of that at-large bid in the Liberty bowl, as well as any extra bowl spots the Big XII and SEC are going to have. UVA and Clemson added their names to the list of bowl-eligible teams today, and NC State or Maryland are likely to do the same in the next week. I can't say that the ACC has been as impressive as I had hoped this year, but wow is the middle of it deep. It's been a while since I've seen so many teams beating up on each other in such random fashion.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 11

Iggy could actually stay in first too. I remember last year I lost a couple games while I was in #1, and still held on because I had a big enough lead in the picks-made category.

Go UVA! Bowl eligible! That was a really satisfying win today. Of course, next week is the one that really matters.

Goddamn, I was a coin toss away from taking them in Bored's contest. I'm sure I'd have won if I'd stuck with Cocks. Seven wins, beating Florida, placing second in the SEC East, and probably making the Peach Bowl or better? Great first year for Spurrier if they hold on today.

This Week in College Football 11/8 - 11/12

The ACC is like this: you've got three elite teams (FSU being the least elite of them this season), then 8 other teams, and then Duke. At this point, pretty much any of those 8 teams can beat any of the others, and most of them can hang with the elite teams and beat them maybe once every four or five tries. FSU beating BC seemed to be an issue of the talent gap. FSU won the first 5 and last 5 minutes of that game; they had talented enough skill players to make big plays when it counted. BC dominated the line of scrimmage, but FSU just turned it on at all the important points and got enough points up early to play sloppy for the 2nd and 3rd quarter and survive. That's their new home uniform this year. It was subject to a lot of ridicule in the offseason, and rightly so.

And like that, Clemson is up two touchdowns before the first quarter's over. I expect FSU to get humming sooner rather than later, but Clemson's defense just clamped down too. How embarrassing for the Atlantic division if they send a 7-4 or 8-3 FSU team to get hammered in the ACC championship.

This Week in College Football 11/8 - 11/12

Shouldn't be too much too report--A&M's not particularly good this year and their defense is abysmal. At home, OU's gonna get themselves bowl-eligible, and I'd be really surprised if they didn't. Gearing up for the UVA/Georgia Tech game right now. This is a must-win, and I'm calling it Hoos 23, GT 17. Just because I'm there, of course.

    My 2006 NFL Mock Draft

Vernon Davis is a good player and a very good receiving TE, but I don't think he's close to being worth a top-10 pick.

    BCS Standings 11/7

The Miami/Alabama situation is funny to me. I think it only exists because there are still more than two undefeated teams. If Texas or USC had lost by now, I don't think anyone would have the two major conference unbeaten teams remaining anywhere but #1 and #2.
