And that's why you don't pass the freaking ball with 30 seconds left. Were they going to have to punt or something?

I'm sitting on my roof listening to the Rolling Stones. Like, the actual band. They're playing Scott Stadium in Charlottesville tonight, which is about 1000 feet from my house. And man, Mick Jagger sounds like a Mick Jagger impersonator. Dude is getting on. Though they are playing quite a few songs off of Exile on Main Street, which is a bit surprising and nice.

Judge Orders Abu Ghraib Photos released
Edwin MacPhisto replied to CheesalaIsGood's topic in Current Events
I'm going to take the controversial position that allowing our country to pursue a policy of torture is a vile misuse of the privilege of presidential power, wartime or not. We're not supposed to torture people, guys. -
Judge Orders Abu Ghraib Photos released

Update on the CNN story: Whattadouche. You've gone five years without vetoing a single thing and the thing you're going to call foul on is we shouldn't torture people? -

There's a prom song?

U2 on Conan would have been much bigger 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. But they're still pretty big--I don't think you can find a bigger band worldwide with such mainstream appeal. No Beatles, though. No one has ever really approached that sort of popularity.

Yes, it really is amazing how a band so great could churn out one of the worst VU covers I've ever heard. Though that *is* quite a random tune to choose. But I guess you wouldn't want to cover something like "Heroin," as you'd just get your ass kicked by the original. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You've got to hear Billy Idol's version of "Heroin." It's bottom-ten songs of all-time material.

Hidden link for the Dharma Initiative on that first site, though it doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Even if Ethan wasn't his real name, I got the impression that Desmond had been handling the countdown on his own for much longer than just one month. Jack turning into a dick has been going on since the middle of last season and I'm glad to see it kicking in. He's much more interesting sparring with everybody than he is as merely everyman super-good guy.

Oh, and that book which SJ referred to at the top of this page, The Third Policeman, was on Desmond's bed while he was packing.

I don't think those are Danielle's Others. I think all of those people are Flight 815 survivors. Would real there-16-years Others be wearing pencil skirts? We'll see. Much better episode. Well done in giving us a bit about the research program, but making it very clear that weird shit was going on at the island before they arrived, presumably in 1980.

The circumstances of how he got Walt back are spelled out quite clearly in his season 1 flashback episode, if you can find that. I think it's called "Special." My thing with the flashbacks, which last week drove home for me, is that I really don't think we need a lot more of them. These people are on the island and we have basic snapshots of how everyone got there and what their lives were like beforehand. Really, aside from one more Jack (what happened to his marriage) and perhaps tonight's Locke (how'd he get paralyzed?), I can't think of anyone else who really needs one. Maybe Hurley can get another since his was so condensed, but I don't think anybody else has additional backstory that means a whole lot at this point. With all the new characters seemingly coming into things this week, I think time on the island is going to be a lot more important than time before the island.
-
Tonight ought to be a pretty important episode. Last week indicated that we're getting to a point where flashbacks for our core crew are less important, and actual progress on the island is going to be a lot more vital to this being a satisfying story. Hopefully this week will give us some answers and some directions for the characters to take rather than a bunch of people standing around looking confused.
-
So there'll be a five-way in a couple weeks, then? I've only watched this show occasionally, but I think my big problem with it is that its larger character/story arcs are pretty cheesy/uninteresting. The smaller surgery instances that never really form the central points of the episodes always seem to bring out the most interesting aspects of everyone involved, and then get dumped so we can get four people getting their swerve on together.

You're worse than he is lately and you're ignoring his posts anyway. Give it a rest so the rest of us don't have to deal with it. As much I'm glad to be able to watch Virginia play BC, I'm a little disappointed that I probably won't get to see any of OU/Texas as a result. Our two affiliates here always show the same games even though their regional coverages overlap. The game I'm most interested in is UGA/Tennessee. Georgia has been the quietest of the SEC big guns to this point--no big losses, no big wins--and I'm eager to see what they're actually holding.

The Serenity movie thread

I'd imagine part of that is because no one really knows her history, and a lot of Republicans were hoping for a Thomas or Scalia type with a well-established portfolio of conservative opinions. I imagine Democrats will care less because she'll either be so obviously deficient as a candidate or more of middle-grounder once the research is done that she'll be easily blocked or happily welcomed. Really just looks like a smokescreen to get the "somebody's getting BLOCKED!!!1" stuff out of the way and give supporters of the real candidate some talking points for the future.

Yeah, my friend's dad has it too. He almost passed out watching Blair Witch Project, which is awful, but still kind of funny, because it's the freakin' Blair Witch Project.

So, who the fuck is Harriet Miers? Seems to be the question on everyone's mind. I'm not terribly sure how I feel about a supreme court justice who's never been a judge before.

You and dizziness, yikes. You have Menier's disease or something? Go read a book.

Really good, but I'll take Low-Life. "Love Vigilantes"! "Perfect Kiss"! Goddamn.

Michigan has won one national title in the past five decades. It was Lloyd Carr's team! I know Michigan fans want to win more now, and I fully acknowledge his problems, but there's no "national title level team" to go back to, per se, since he's the only guy who's managed to win one for the Wolverines in the modern era anyway.

USC has handled themselves so ridiculously well in these last two games, coming from behind both times and winning in two very different fashions, that I'm now definitely sold on them running the table this season. Notre Dame isn't high-powered enough; Cal's probably the only real challenger, maybe, unless UCLA really steps it up by season's end.

Next weekend will be interesting for Serenity. If the wealth of positive reviews and reactions actually do start getting around, it may be able to hold and pull in another $8 million. If this weekend was really just beforehand fans rushing out to see it, it may end up dropping by half or more. We'll see. I want another movie, but if we don't get one, I'm really happy with what we did get.
