It's not that they think they can do the job better, in most cases. It's that nobody else will do the job. If you're willing to go into a shitty underfunded school without prospects of career advancement, please do, because you will do a better job, duh. But I wouldn't expect someone with a lot of experience to take on all those burdens. Need is need.

I just read them all. The only ones that are anything but total shit are Toxx's, Jake Matthews' (bonus points for THEY SPINNIN), and I guess I at least like the concept behind Tamu's. That they think Ethan Andrew's hyper-generic, barely literate Raven-aping is the best thing they've seen so far speaks volumes about this bizarre little affair.

Holy shit, these guys are morons. Missed the point entirely, can't decide how they want to judge...yeowch. If you make it to the next round, Toxx, I think you need to be as direct as possible. They can't seem to infer anything you don't outright shout at them, and they don't really "get" the characters that don't ride hard on one basic character trait (Mikey Scott's rich! So-and-so is an arrogant ladies' man!).

And hey, the Pope!

My roommate cruised into it, but I think he's going to UVA law instead. Apparently the interview and teaching demo are way more important than academic record stuff. And KKK, I'm not sure I get what you mean when you say Mostly these programs are pimped as such: We've got some shitty school districts, we need people who'll staff them and improve them, and we're going to pay you decent money as an incentive to do it. I don't think it's so much hollow as it is smart. Very few people fresh out of college with the chance to make a decent salary for the first time in their live are going to be willing to teach in Assville, Mississippi or shitty parts of cities like Baltimore for, say, just a housing stipend.

Heh, You Have no idea. I was actually making fun of you because I thought your gripe was that your dad was insisting you go to college at all while you didn't want to, when in fact I now see that you just want to to go to an actual university and not deal with a weak community college and his internet honey. So, actually, knowing this, your dad is an asshole, but I really mean it this time. Also, I'm with Mole here. Unless you're living with your parents and get out of absolutely zero area requirements (i.e., what you'd be doing if you were going to a community college), the 4-year college experience is wildly different from going to a community college.

So you guys are just arguing kinda snippily some more. I'm actually fine with that. POPE'D (Also, I think the best thing public education has going for it right now is in programs like Teach for America and AmeriKorps. That's the way to go about improving public education in shit districts: take eager as hell college kids for whom $25-40k is an exciting salary, throw them in a high school that needs them, and let them teach something they care about. Once I get my master's I think I'm going to do a two-year term for one of these guys.)

I don't see how this generalization works, nor do I see how it's much different from what LessonInMachismo characterized as elitism. is what he said, and it's how I think you're portraying teachers. Some teachers are lousy, but so are, as you pointed out, some cops. Some mechanics are lousy; some accountants are lousy. What besides your anecdotes gives this elitism of yours a foundation?

Your father's an asshole.

I am going to a Senses Fail concert next week.

Ouch. -
This thread has exploded, but the fact that some posters have such hard-ons for thinking SCHOOL TEACHERS HOLY SHIT are the most horrible venomous malicious people in the world just makes me laugh.

Non-Bias Attack: A gang of up to 30 black teens
Edwin MacPhisto replied to EdwardKnoxII's topic in Current Events
That's my question too. I searched Fox News, CNN, and even Drudge's archives, and didn't find a single mention of this. The only report of it, at all, is in a small weekly newsletter-type paper for that local Marine Park area. You check out that website? It's incredibly small-time. If it happened, yes, it's an obvious illustration of the problems that make hate crime laws touchy, so I guess it functions well in the abstract. But the tiniest amount of research indicates that no substantial news outlet of any degree has picked up this story. An non-existent, exaggerated straw man? Looks like. -
You're right. I just saw that. Nice pick for Arizona.

No Blackstock on the first day! Someone's gonna get a steal there. And Tyler, you'll come to love Miller very shortly. Promise. He'll make you pass to the tight end by sheer virtue of his AWESOMENESS and good ol' boy style.
-
There's nothing guilty about that ridiculous thwack of bass. Love that song.

In a good way or a bad way? Very happy to see Heath Miller get the first-round draw. Since I don't really follow the NFL much, I guess the Steelers are my new team.

No one talks about g-funk anymore. I've been listening to Doggystyle endlessly lately, and it's even superceded The Chronic in my estimation. The album is more consistent, the guest appearances are used better, and Dr. Dre's improved beats make up for his absence as an emcee. "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)" is still the loosest, most exuberantly obscene posse track I can remember. I don't have a good feel for how many people here dig these still-remarkable albums. Often they seem to get overlooked in whatever rap threads spring up, and I wonder if that's because they're just assumed as classics, or if their reputations have fallen off over time thanks to the string of diluted follow-ups. So?

Awesome. I caught the title track when someone did an edit of just that a few days ago. Someone got on the ball quickly. I do think this would be funnier with Niggaz4life. "She Swallowed It" and "One Less Bitch" especially.
-
It was actually a reply to Tom, but it does address some of the stuff Mike's been talking about too. That DeLay picture's almost as good as some of the ones in the Sex Offenders thread.
-
He's flipping out. Awesome.

They have no use for anyone who's Black and happens to be conservative. Clarence Thomas? Dr. Rice? "Uncle Toms." When has anyone in the NAACP ever called a black conservative an "Uncle Tom"? Harry Belafonte and Ted Rall ain't the NAACP. Did you forget when the NAACP denounced the "Aunt Jemima" thing and actually did the absolute opposite of what you suggest?
-
^ What he said. It was something like the 10th CD I ever bought (late bloomer) and probably the first great one. It's still sometimes my favorite Radiohead album, though.
