The latest twist in the Schiavo case.......
Edwin MacPhisto replied to NoCalMike's topic in Current Events
I know your remark is largely facetious (rimshot!), but why bother with another neurologist? Even if another court-appointed neurologist were to assert her state as helpless, the family and politicos pushing this thing wouldn't accept it. They've been smacked with both the true facts of her health and the proven facts in a court of law for 15 years and it still hasn't convinced them. The mentality to let go just isn't there. They seem like nice enough people, but c'mon. It's over. The parents are in fact filing a Supreme Court appeal next, of course, but that will probably be remanded back to the states by lunchtime tomorrow. -

What, you mean "the Constitution"? Even the judges who wrote dissents cited case law that they thought justified re-hearing the case. Go witch-hunting for your "activist judges" elsewhere. These judges are just doing their jobs to the letter, and the president isn't stupid enough to issue a meaningless executive order that would be ruled unconstitutional. -
I remember when I was in one of Outcast's RP feds for two weeks. Weird experience. Tear it up, guys. They seem to be looking for originality and a sense of purpose, which I think just about everyone here has.

The money explosion in golf over the past decade has been pretty crazy. I can't think of another sport where prize money/salaries escalated so rapidly. It was a big deal to be a million dollar winner for the year in the mid-90s, and now 11 guys have passed that mark maybe 7 events into the season.

Tremendously reminiscent of Busta Rhymes' flow on the verses. Don't mistake nice for soft, guys!

I'm guessing he shot himself in protest of the new restrictions on juvenile executions.

The latest twist in the Schiavo case.......

People keep saying that. And no matter how many times it is said, it still reeks of justification every time it's uttered. Here's a hypo: what if she COULD feel pain? Not necessarily cognizant of her surroundings, etc., but she could feel pain, thus ensuring that starvation would be a slow and agonizing death for her. Would your opinion then change? Again - it just seems as if people are using the "well, she won't feel anything" as a justification for the fact that starvation is very much a bad way to go. "What if she COULD feel pain?" Then she wouldn't be in the vegetative state she's in. I suppose the case would have to be evaluated, but you're comparing apples and boxcars here. Additionally, if it were her wish to go, it'd be her priority regardless of pain. My emphasis. It IS good enough. What, ten years of litigation on this and he's still been ruled fit to be her guardian? I said it before and I'll say it again: what you personally believe about the character of Michael Schiavo means nothing in this case, because a court has ruled that he is suitable to remain her legal guardian which, as her husband, he most certainly was and continues to be. Obviously you can say what you think about whether or not he's trustworthy and make your opposition known, but second-guessing the court's opinion and agreeing with all the tabloids is veering into tinfoil hat stuff. -
Why would you even waste your time with this when the actual video for the song revolves entirely around a bunch of guys dressed as Abraham Lincoln wearing short shorts?

Well I guess that makes it okay! Well, in response to Mike's claim that this is an issue of cruel and unusual punishment (which, as Chris has pointed out, it isn't anyway), yes, it does. It's not like removing a feeding tube is something new; dehydration for terminal non-response patients happens in hospitals and hospices every day. -

Since we've already addressed the question of legal guardianship, I'll move on to this. This isn't "torture" or "cruel punishment" and your declaration of it as so is ridiculous hyperbole. Here's just one of a dozen debunkings of that myth. What happens to patients without feeding tubes She's not going to feel a thing. -
I first heard of him via his website. A friend of mine from Tampa later confirmed he's often seen clubbing in the gayest of outfits. The one time I went to the Castle in Ybor (hilarious place), I'm pretty sure that guy was there, dancing with an overweight man who was wearing only a red teddy and a huge erection.

Well I mean most seemed to think that GT was better. Hell even I think that and I fucking hate GT. Me, Iggy, and Skip Bayless, really.

I'll still defend the "Green Album," to a limited extent. All the singles are fair-to-good, and "Simple Pages" and "Don't Let Go" are nice too. Lacks the inspiration of their earlier work for sure, but they still had a knack for good hooks then.

Halftime of UNC/ISU means bonus coverage of Vermont/Michigan State. Sorrentine, the kid who knocked down the extra-long game-winning three against Syracuse, is fearless out there. Michigan State keeps him from dribbling in? He just throws it up, and hits it. 4/6 from 3-point range so far, and most of those are from NBA-distance. I'm so glad I skipped a review session for today's games.

Using that logic he could just shoot her in the head because she's his property. You still can't perform criminal acts on them. No, you can't, because carrying out her wishes isn't a criminal act. We don't force Jehovah's witnesses to use life-support systems; American citizens have no obligation to accept artificial survival. The feeding tube is the only thing keeping her alive. Removing it doesn't violate the doctor's credo of "first do no harm." If you believe that Michael Schiavo is lying or, as CronoT flaccidly asserts, trying "backdoor euthanasia," then obviously you don't care about the criminality of the act. But the courts haven't found him negligent in any way, and there is no reason to take her parents' word over that of her legal guardian. If a court strips him of guardianship for negligence or fault, then you have a different story, but that hasn't happened and I don't expect it to happen. -
Found a link on this hideous forum. Seems appropriate. And yeah, this is actually worse than anything on Maladroit, if memory serves me right. How about that fruity guitar "solo"?

That's quite an accomplishment for someone who's so far gone that even involuntary relfex actions don't work anymore. Not to mention that to determine that she wants to live, she would have to figure out what's going on anyway. The husband isn't a saint, but the lifers are really blowing this well out of proportion. I guess because they managed to get the story so much attention that it will be somewhat embarassing if they "lose." The burden of proof shouldn't have to be on the life side of the argument. They should have to prove that she wants to die, and they can't because they don't have a living will. False. The chain of guardianship is clear: husband, adult children, parents. All the people who are saying "I don't like this Michael Schiavo guy, he's a jerk!" need to get over themselves. Not a single one of the criminal inquiries or accusations the parents have raised against him have yielded anything in a court of law. Your opinion that he just seems like a bad dude isn't justification when our criminal courts have said that he's done nothing wrong. In short: everyone should make up a living will, and the innovations being taken to turn this into a political spectacle (Governor Bush's unconstitutional laws, this ridiculous subpoena) are pretty abhorrent. -
