Point well made. If nothing else, I can be That Guy!

I wanted to see these wacky electoral maps, so I signed up as We Tigers, which is the name I use on every other board. Oops. I have been invited to three different election night parties. I'm normally quite happy with any excuse to party on a Tuesday, but it's become clear that these are actually going to be "parties" where people watch election returns with great interest and aren't actually getting hammered. God damn America.

Me too! A guy sitting on his porch drinking wine straight out of the bottle. He said he was the real dark knight, if you know what I mean.

Ouuuch. Maybe Tennessee can get Cutcliffe back. Again!

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 10

Holy crap. I was drunk as hell in a bar on Saturday night (a bar that went berserk when Crabtree made that catch-and-run, by the by) and had completely forgotten about what my tiebreak was. I had thought the game would be 41-31 when I was predicting.

Marvin is fucking incredible. Eric, Smitty, and I should all bus Marvin into the district one day, have lunch at somewhere classy and pretentious, and then each write a Rashomon-esque account of our observations for the rest of the board. I will be thrilled when the election's all over, and hate that it's going to probably take about 5 hours of my day to do this on Tuesday. Ho-hum. When I voted in the primaries, my polling place wouldn't even let me use a cell phone or iPod! And, there's something uncomfortable about standing while reading a book, slowly walking forward a step every 1-2 minutes. Fascists.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 10

Michigan/Purdue and Notre Dame/Pitt are probably two of the most irritating picks I've had to make in this thing. Bored, you continue to impress. THURSDAY South Florida SATURDAY Michigan State Michigan Indiana Virginia West Virginia Mississippi Texas A&M Pittsburgh Florida Iowa Florida State California Texas Tiebreak #1: How many total points will be scored in the Texas/Texas Tech game? 72 Tiebreak #2: How many rushing yards will Connecticut's Donald Brown have against West Virginia? 140

    Fallout 3

I remember this popping up earlier in the news, but yesterday I actually got a chance to see the Fallout 3 ads in the most-traveled metro station in DC. It's really cool; literally all the ad space is for the game, including banners, floor adds, Vault Boy decals on the various pillars throughout the station, etc. Much better than the cheesy Washington Wizards banners that usually find their way up around this time of year. If you didn't see them on joystiq earlier, here they are.

Oh god, I can't believe I watched that. Some things you can't unsee.

    Tom Waits

Lots of shouting, references to cans of beans, etc., and a modestly heartbreaking refrain delivered with the usual enthusiasm. I'm fond.

I wouldn't exactly sweat a lack of personal investment in each campaign's superficial buzzwords. Again, they have almost nothing to do with the substance of each platform.

I have a soft spot for The Black Rider, largely attributable to when I saw a pretty cool performance of the play in London four years ago. Without that, though, "Lucky Day" is really its only must-have song.

    Tom Waits

It kinda did, didn't it, sadly enough. There's some interesting stuff on there, "What's He Building In There?" being my personal fave, but a lot of the eighteen songs on this friggin' endless album just felt like filler. I put Mule Variations somewhere in the middle, but it does feel overlong (Real Gone, despite also being Real Good, suffers from the same thing). There are some tremendous song on there, though: "Big in Japan," "Hold On," "House Where Nobody Lives," and "Come On Up To The House" are faves of mine.

Glenn borrowed a few too many of Rush's pills.

    Tom Waits

I love pretty much everything he's released, but yeah, what Milky said. Swordfishtrombones or Franks Wild Years are good, reasonably approachable intros to the Island Records style, and Small Change is my personal favorite of the Asylum albums.

Yeah, ratings are down. Here's the article. Some very minor spoilers about the episode in two weeks in the first couple paragraphs, if you want to avoid.

Because it's going to fast food workers and negroes on welfare, duh. My dad isn't happy about the potentially forthcoming tax changes, because he owns his own business and may also see a slight uptick in his and my mom's taxes; I'm not sure how much of his income is the company's income and how much is a salary he gives himself. He wrote me a small hypothetical narrative to show me his point of view and various taxation scenarios that could arise in the future, and my mom made him edit in a scenario where the hypothetical protagonist (that's me) gets married and has two kids, and also moves closer to home. Kudos to them for creativity.

    Heroes

The blue fire guy--Flint--is the worst. He just stands around being bald and looking like he's going to cook some bacon and eggs or something. I also wonder how Jamie Hector feels saying things like "your fear is powerin' me up!" or "I can tell you're AFRAID" every time he does a scene. What are they thinking? It's not like Nathan has to constantly say "I think it's time we flew the coop." I enjoyed last night's episode, but if the writers were trying to actually shock or surprise people with the moments at each act break--Parkman got a hole in his gut! Peter got thrown out a window!--they failed pretty badly. The "twists" in both instances were very obvious. Kudos to them for breaking Maury's neck though, in an attempt to at least keep some level of tension going. Papa Petrelli does have a certain menace and willingness to kill without hesitation that's actually making him fairly appealing as a bad dude.

Oh My God > ... I got nothing. I had a really hard time finishing that song the first time I listened to it, and it's only 3'40"! At least "My World" is out of the way in about a minute, and you can just turn off the album after "Don't Cry." Speaking of, what the hell kind of a decision was that? You have Estranged/You Could Be Mine/Don't Cry, which is about as good a 20-minute arena rock trilogy as could possibly be conceived, and a perfect concluding high note for an up-and-down album...and then you kill it with that weird faux-Reznor bit. Was that supposed to be Axl's "Her Majesty" or something?

I think Slash has been awful since GNR, but that doesn't change the fact that his guitar was a huge part of the band's success. Neither has been particularly good without the other.
