    Oh yeah, he went there

It's not a question of title - it's one of responsibility. In a situation of national crisis, the leader of the free world has much greater individual responsibility than any member of his 100-person upper legislature and a different standard of conduct would be expected. Mind you, I have no problem with how Bush reacted.

Shall I, again, mention PRECISELY what Kerry did on 9/11? He's said, EXACTLY, what he did --- you know, back before he decided that this would be a nice little attack to make. Mike, of course I read about Kerry's reaction. As has been said earlier in this thread, it doesn't correlate. Kerry was not President; he was not in charge of the federal government and the United States of America. It's entirely different. The situation remains hypothetical. That change of role is an extremely significant variable. To hold every elected official to the same standard of job-specific obligations as the country's chief executive is foolish.

I know that anything anti-Bush is peachy keen for you --- but flat-out LYING about what you'd do is just sad. Especially when it's done solely to slam Bush. -=Mike "Flat-out lying"? Mike, where are you taking this? A hypothetical reaction to a situation that never happened is not a lie. John Kerry has never been in a classroom as President of the United States addressing children at the moment of a terrorist action on US soil; there is no basis for calling his claim a lie. You have no better a frame of reference to his assertion than he does. Edit: Very amused that NoCal posted just about the exact same thing. Heh.

    Recent Purchases

Great deal getting it used. That's how I got mine. Best $11 that I got from selling back textbooks I've ever spent.

I don't think that was a real option. Kerry doesn't answer the question, and there's another sliver for the "Kerry's weak on defense" or "Kerry doesn't know how to handle terrorism" line. Instead he did the thing that neither harms him nor attacks the president.

So, is anyone who thinks what Kerry said was awful actually going to respond to my post, or are we just going to hit each other with our dicks all day?

    Jobs report

When did I say anything about oil? I don't really know what you're trying to convince me of here. I understand all that; I just wish that the people making these projections would make them more reasonable, and that the Fed wouldn't raise interest rates again. The projections were off by over 80% for July, so let's go slowly and figure out what's going on first.

    Jobs report

I was really surprised when I saw this on CNN this morning. Everyone – EVERYONE – had been predicting well over 200,000 new jobs in July. Now Greenspan’s theory that June was just a seasonal blip isn’t nearly as reassuring.

    Oh yeah, he went there

Here's the actual text of what Kerry said: Why is this even news, and why do you consider it an attack? Look at Kerry's plain, nonconfrontational response. It’s a meaningless question from a reporter; it’s not like he made this a part of his stump speech. What exactly is Kerry supposed to say, if not that he would handle the problem immediately and serve the American public? Bush had to collect his thoughts for a few minutes before he got his gameface on (in my hometown, no less!). Fine by me. If Kerry had said “I certainly wouldn’t have sat there for 7 minutes while thousands of Americans died as President Bush did,” or something similarly ridiculous, then you’d have a case. But Kerry didn’t say that, and he shouldn’t be criticized for giving a generic, I-will-serve-this-country response to an asinine, out-of-line question.

I just listened to this again. That he did every single piece of that song by himself is nigh-incomprehensible to me. If I could give one song I've rated an 11, I think that would be it.

The Eternal By-Mail CD Burning and Trading

Not bandwise, but 40 Pearl Jam live albums is pretty, uh, unique. I can't even comprehend that.

No, "Lovefool" is great. Fear not.

Everyone should use the dragon sleeper into Russian legsweep. I used it for a while, so did Mak, so did Tod, and it's totally sweet. Great late-stage transition or near-fall if you can swing it. ::pees on Tod::

You're crazier. "Play in the Sunshine" isn't bad, but it's totally an album track in the sense that it's not nearly as good without the total contrast of the title track that leads into it. In the scheme of the album, I actually like it very much, but no other song that Prince has done has the same spare paranoia of the title track. And it was still a hit single! "Sign" stands out and I love it. Damn, I've left you with "craziest."

    Kerry did do something (apparently)

    There's no 'basically' about it.

    This can't help but work.

I don't get it. Your address is bumped? What does that mean?

Today's a particularly Prince-y day. Prince - Sign O' the Times Sign o' the Times: 10 Play in the Sunshine: 5 Housequake: 7 The Ballad of Dorothy Parker: 8 It: 6 Starfish & Coffee: 7 Slow Love: 7 Hot Thing: 7 Forever In My Life: 8 U Got The Look: 7 If I Was Your Girlfriend: 9 Strange Relationship: 9 I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man: 10 The Cross: 7 Gonna Be A Beautiful Night: 7 Adore: 7 For such a sprawler of an album, it's incredibly consistent. Prince shuffles pop, rock, ballads, and pop rock ballads all over this thing, and tempers it with one of his first - and best - totally out-there tracks, "If I Was Your Girlfriend," on which he digitally alters his voice, takes on a woman's persona, and...well, it's weird. And great. That song, "Strange Relationship," and "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" form a triptych on lust and relationships that always blows me away. I Could Never..." might be my favorite song of his, ever. Prince - Dirty Mind (which has the best album cover ever, incidentally) Dirty Mind: 7 When You Were Mine: 10 Do It All Night: 6 Gotta Broken Heart Again: 7 Uptown: 7 Head: 8 Sister: 8 Partyup: 7 "When You Were Mine" is above the rest, but the "Head"/"Sister" double-team is a less-famous gem. The album is a great pop experience: it's 30 minutes long, has 8 great songs, and is the sort of disc you can listen to daily.

That DVD's going to be the best thing in my collection. Nice.

Take that back. I didn’t actually mean that. I just wanted to see if UYI’s head would explode, but he took it very well. Kinda disappointing.

    So, let's discuss Prince

Two discs. Nice. I’ll have to look into the special features, but this is a no-brainer pick-up if there’s two discs worth content in any form. I have the original, but it was a gift, so I won’t feel lame for a second about double-dipping.

    Radiohead

No one has mentioned the actual song “The Bends” yet, which is too bad. It’s great. Get that for sure. For OK Computer, try the one-two punch of “Airbag” and “Paranoid Android,” which opens the album. Add “Lucky,” as already suggested, or “Exit Music (For a Film)” and you’ll get a taste of the album’s more downbeat pieces.

You're right; I actually don't know why I gave "Vexed" a 7. I think I had "Do It" as a 7 at first and shifted that down, or something odd. "Vexed" is actually pretty out of place since it wasn't on the U.K. album. I think I'll fix that.

    The Finisher Thread

Here's how I always thought about it, though as a curmudgeonly ol' retiree I certainly do not make the rules. As long as it makes sense, go with it. A lionsault isn't exactly heavy impact, and it's fairly common among cruisers. Which isn't to say that it can't make a good finisher - it's all in the build and the sell. But I'd say a move like that is pretty close to public domain. It's also a simple enough manuever that it's very easy to vary it - there's no reason that Dub Cee's Lionsault has to be portrayed as powerfully as Sly's. I see the reverse DDT (which, surprisingly, 3 people have among their finishers) in a similar light. They're moves that are much more common outright in North American wrestling.
