This is like the thing you check on the Columbia House CD club - generic and weirdly linked to the point of uselessness. I'd check "rock," but what does that mean? Slayer? Creed? The Velvet Underground? Pavement?

Ok, Popick. Sorry if you can't help but connect Koppel and Kerry's campaign. I think it's an awfully silly thing to do. Those damn K-named bastards, always conspiring... This looks like a well-meaning, if kinda fruitless gesture. Not a lot of people will watch, but the idea is respectable.

This is awful. Jesus.

Seconded. I've had a chance to listen to it a couple times, and it's really fun. Light years beyond a lot of the stuff he'd been doing recently - it's straight-up, simple, and satisfying. It's not anything epic or huge, no second-coming of Sign o' the Times, but it's cool, funky, and definitely in the spirit of Prince. I agree on all the tracks above, and very much like "The Marrying Kind" as well. I'm not sure if I would have bought it had I not gotten it for "free," but I'm glad to have it now.

Possibly. There are many days when I like it even better than Aquemini. But I do think it takes a bit of downturn after, say, "Humble Mumble," whereas Aquemini just keeps on ramping up all the way to the end. Ending on "Liberation" and "Chonkyfire" finishes up about as strongly as possible.

Poll: Best version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"?
Edwin MacPhisto replied to justsoyouknow's topic in Music
I'm baffled at the fact that just as many people have voted GnR as Dylan. Suckers need some functioning-ass ears. The only thing worse than GnR's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is their "Sympathy for the Devil." -
I have about 40 pages to write over the next week and a half. Damn you, IL. SWF Favorite Writer(s): Stevens, King, Raynor, Thugg, Xstasy, Kibs, Z. I could make a case for anyone but I've got the fondest memories from the old-school days. Favorite Promo(s): "Chicken McNuggets for the Soul." The one where the Clan were controlling John Kruger with a frickin' radio. Chris Wilson blows up FAO Schwartz. Flesher's King's Road. Anything Kibs ever wrote that wasn't a clip-show promo. Comet's promo was called "Wish," and that's one of my biggest old-school favorites. Favorite Match(es): Edwin/Raynor Genesis III, which I will once again reiterate was 80% him. I'm not sure if everyone remembers that. That 6-man tag between Danny/Dace/Kibs and Nefarious-Ass-Heels-9000, aka Justice, Rule, and Janus, which was probably my personal favorite match during my SWF CC stint. So much old stuff, too. Basically, if you were on the card at Genesis III, I loved it. Favorite Stip to Write: A regular old No-DQ after three months of storyline build-up. Tag matches with a partner you know. My Biggest Accomplishment: Helping Mark Stevens retire. A year ago I would have said my super-fun World title run, but hey, priorities. I get to help put together the send-off for a great guy whose work in the fed I really admired. And he was kind enough to let me help. Close seconds are the M7/Carnival promowars monstrosity of Summer 2002, and actually coming back for G4 to have a match with Kibs. I Regret That: I didn't blow off the Kibagami angle earlier. And that I never got to work with Mak, Flesher, or Z nearly as much as I wanted to. Especially Z. I always kept telling him how he was going to be huge, huge, amazing, and then we both went and retired. I Wish: That I had been able to keep writing. Looking back, I think "how'd I ever do that?" and wish I could recapture the ability to write 12,000 words a week, be it for this or anything else. Dream Matches Involving Yourself: Me. Kibagami. Competitive. That's the only other thing I could want from this fed. Well, that, and an Edwin/Stevens vs. King/Raynor tag match, which would be great, great fun. Dream Matches: Too many to list. Any permutations of a tag match with King on one side and Mark on the other, whether or not I'm involved. TNT vs. C4! Stryke vs. That Other Dude He Was! Z vs...a tire iron! I've Become Most Friendly With: Guys like King and Mark who I talk to all too infrequently. Kibs. Oh, and of course TNT. If I had his music taste at his age, I feel like I'd have turned out even more awesome. I Hope: that the fed gets new guys now that board registrations are re-opened, and that Genesis V continues the great legacy of our anniversary show. Personal Name (First name works, last name if you don't care): Paul Hitler. I actually won't give my last name because if I do, I bet you bastards will call me until I change my number. Poopsmiths. Single: Well, technically. Does it count if she's an ex-girlfriend? Have Most Trouble: Getting myself to be efficient. I always get everything - be it academic, work-related, or whatever - done and done well, but often at the expense of well-managed existence. Favorite Things to Do: Kill the lights and listen to My Bloody Valentine, DJ Shadow, or Portishead. Watch Road House in a tightly packed apartment while eating a giant tin of fried chicken. Rap for people for the first time, thereby scaring them. Delicious, delicious sophistry. Most Recent Accomplishment: I finished Ulysses. You should too. It's incredible. Most Recent Failure: Signing myself up on Thefacebook.com, a weird colleges thing not unlike Friendster. So. Fucking. Retarded. Favorite Bands: Prince. The Pixies. Beatles. Outkast. Wu-Tang. U2, if not so much lately. Modest Mouse, MBV, Velvet Underground. I'm not going to list all 340 or so. Favorite Book: Possibly The Sun Also Rises. Six months from now, it might be Ulysses. Favorite Movie: Sentimental choice - The Seven Samurai. Practical choice: Pulp Fiction. Or Rushmore. Or Purple Rain. Favorite Actor: I don't watch enough movies lately. But it's got to be Bill Murray. One Song to Listen to On Repeat: TV on the Radio, "Staring at the Sun." Hypnotic much? One Item You'd Save During A Fire: Like everyone else, I'm thinking the computer is a reasonable choice. It's just a laptop, so it's pretty easy to manage, too. Something You Want to Get Into To: Reading all the old X-Men comics. It's nerdy as hell, yeah, but I'm frickin' enchanted by these little freaks. I also want to take up literary editing - layout, publishing, all that. It's time to get career-oriented. Hello, grad courses next semester. Biggest Regret/Mistake: That's awful sweeping. I'm happy to say I don't think I've done anything life-destroying in my 20 years. We'll go with "ever buying the Lo-Fidelity All-Stars album, just because it had a particular song I liked very much." Stopping theater was disappointing, but after seeing how lame the groups here at UVA were, I'm not so sorry I bailed. Biggest Turn On: Someone who lays her head on my shoulder. The ability to engage in competent discourse about the collected works of Ghostface Killah. Biggest Turn Off: Shitty hygiene. Take a goddamn shower already! If You Died and Went To Heaven, What Do You Want God to Say: "You got served! No, just kidding. Buffet's open till 8." How About Going to Hell, Devil says: "I too enjoy the Wu-Tang Clan! Let's be friends."

Wow, you really have them pegged by owning those albums. Be quiet. He put you in your place and you're still trying to flame? Just stop. Well it is foolish to consider themselves outkast fans without owning or even MENTIONING Atliens and Aquemini - arguably two of the best hip hop albums of the 90's. Its like owning the Beatles 1 Album without even knowing Sgt Peppers or the White Album. I don't think it's that offensive. More like digging Abbey Road or Magical Mystery Tour without giving much creedence to Revolver. Which is still a bit silly, but not deadly. Stankonia is just about as good as Aquemini, and I prefer it to ATLiens. And he's at least heard the major tracks off of the earlier albums, which is far better than nothing. So, in sum: Ernie, go buy a copy of Aquemini. You'll dig it.

Go swipe a credit card through someone's ass and you'll change your tune.

Kerry Collins leaves the Giants. Not that surprising. Eli gets the start from the outset, and Accorsi and co. hope he doesn't tear anything.
-
Christ. They know how to pick 'em. Oh, and the Dolphins finally grabbed Poole at the beginning of the 4th. Sucka.
-
They should have stayed with Rivers. The Chargers annihilated them on this one - they got the QB they actually wanted and a TON of prospects for the future. I still don't understand why the Giants wanted a QB when they have much bigger problems than Kerry Collins.

Donnie Darko re-release in theatres…
Edwin MacPhisto replied to notJames's topic in Television & Film
Rule 3: Be nice. I'm on page with Rando here, but for a different reason. If it's just re-editing the deleted scenes into the film, it's going to be awful. The deleted scenes were deleted for a reason; they're ponderous, ruin most of the subtlety the film ever had, and don't include gratuitous tit shots. -
Brilliant. Seriously.

This probably comes as a surprise to no one. "Purple Rain." Also, the priest would be wearing assless pants.

I'm surprised I didn't do this the first time this thread was around. No portends of "greatest" here, though I think I could make a pretty good argument for any of my current favorites taking their place in the canon (if they're not already there). This changes all the time, of course, but this is a pretty definitive set of choices from the last few months: 5. Wu-Tang Clan, Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers 4. The Pixies, Doolittle 3. The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 2. My Bloody Valentine, Loveless 1. Prince, Purple Rain

Speakerboxxx for me. With the exception of the atrocious "Tomb of the Boom" that slogs up 5 minutes smack in the middle of the album (8 if you count the skit that uses the same blah beat), it's solid all the way through. The Love Below is very good, but doesn't hold up in terms of consistency. That wouldn't be a problem if it really were as far-reaching and experimental as it portends to be, but a lot of its supposed big leaps are really just little hops. Instead of exciting sprawl, a few sections of that disc just degenerate into dull sprawl.

It's anthemic in a way I'd never guessed they could pull off. I like it and the new album quite a bit, but will always point to The Lonesome Crowded West as their best work to this point. If you like the new album, check out "Polar Opposites," "Heart Cooks Brain," and "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine." Those'll give you a pretty representative feel of some of their best earlier stuff.

I'm not too sure he'd be concerned with missing out on someone who uses the phrase "OCrap." And norman, yessir: I got my copy of Musicology at the door. "Cinnamon Girl," by the by, isn't a Neil Young cover - just the same name. I haven't listened to it yet - I'm still kinda resonating off of last night's show. It was fantastic, and the encore ("The Beautiful Ones," "Nothing Compares 2 U," and "Purple Rain") was the most devastatingly gorgeous stretch of music I've had the pleasure of hearing live. Also, this whole "I'm a Jehovah's Witness and don't play the dirty stuff no more!" line is a bit of bunk. Sure, there was no "Pussy Control," but he did pop off "Cream." Which was awesome. If any of you are even the slightest bit a Prince fansand there are still tickets available near you, go. It's totally worth it.

The One And Only 24 Season 3 Thread
Edwin MacPhisto replied to Spicy McHaggis's topic in Television & Film
I feel like having that be his motivation was a bit of a mistake. I mean, the guy's unrepentantly evil, moustache-twirling levels of sadism and what. Nothing justifies the sort of stuff he's been pulling, and it just makes the show feel like it's trying to be all edgy and stuff with the whole Iraq/Bush/politics situation. It's pretty cheesy and I'd rather they just have him be pissed at getting left behind by America. You shot Ryan Chappelle in the head - that's edgy enough. -

Edwin MacPhisto replied to justsoyouknow's topic in Music
I'm a huge U2 fan, but man, can they do some awful cover versions. "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is one of them, but "Helter Skelter" has got to be the worst. "Charles Manson stole this from the Beatles...and now we're stealing it back!" It's not like he went platinum with it, guys. -
Well, I might be buying it if I weren't going to see him on Friday. As far as I know, everyone who goes to the concerts is still getting a free promotional copy of the album, so I'll hold out for that. I've thus far heard the title track (which is getting a rather surprising amount of MTV airplay - what up, Sony marketing machine) and "Cinnamon Girl." "Musicology" is decent, traditional-type funk, but "Cinnamon Girl" is great. It's got the same sort of whimsical, candy-pop vibe of stuff like "Raspberry Beret" and it's pretty damn catchy. All in all, this is the most Prince-sounding stuff since "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," which is pretty satisfying.

Dylan, especially the version on Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue. Big time performance, big time goodness. -
I prefer Chris Rock on Bigger and Blacker, 5 years ago. "Music? Movies? What the fuck ever happened to 'crazy'"?
-
You have a very strange approach to movies.
