I love me some Modest Mouse. The only bad thing they've ever put out was the half-assed EP in the wake of Moon and Antarctica. In an age where synthy disco-rock (!!! and the Rapture, most notably) and a pile of electroclash are becoming increasingly popular, I'm surprised that so few people seem to listen to classic, 80's-era Depeche Mode.

Now I know that "Peter Pan Syndrome" was concocted by pop psychologist in 1983 and has never been acknowledged as much more than self-help gibberish. Self-edification is sweet.

Nope, NC State 433, Kansas 358. It's in the ESPN.com preview for tonight's game. There's no way this isn't an NC State rout unless something drastic happens. NC State's record for this season doesn't reflect how good they actually are, especially against plain ol' average teams like Kansas, whose big win on the season comes over...Missouri. NCST took Ohio State and FSU to the wire, took out Clemson, won a shootout with Virginia, and out-offensed Texas Tech. Rivers is probably going to put up 400 yards tonight and the only thing that'll keep it close is the crappy NC State defense.

No, it really isn't. Rant all you want. Off the Wall and Thriller are impeccable, and Bad is very good with a bunch of great songs, but that's it. It lacks the coherence, conviction, and simple songwriting of those two albums. This is not to say I won't listen to "The Way You Make Me Feel" or "Liberian Girl" any day of the week; it's just to say that there's no way I'm listening to the whole album over one of the others. On the Prince/MJ issue - these are two guys who are pretty hard to pit against each other. They both covered a lot of similar territory in the musical mainstream and had more charting hits apiece than any other artist of their era. I'm a Prince man myself, but I find it difficult to gauge the influence of either. Prince is the keynote speaker of explicit sexuality in pop, and MJ is the lord of the dance. It's often not cited, but I'd also say that Prince had a fair effect on the whole DIY (do-it-yourself) approach to music - the man was a machine on much of his work, often playing every instrument and writing every track himself. If I had to pick, I'd go with Prince, because from 79-92 he experimented with a lot of different styles and managed to succeed with the vast majority of them, moreso than MJ. There are at least 4 utterly different Prince albums I can't live without, and I've never come up with more than the 2 monsters for MJ. I really can't make a statement on how influential that is, but I'm always impressed that the same guy put "When You Were Mine," "Raspberry Beret," "Let's Go Crazy," and "7" into the top 10.

All I desire from X3 is someone to pick up Grant Morrison's run, look at Emma's costume via Frank Quitely, and decide, "Yes, we need someone to write Emma into this." Va-va-voom.

White better hope that he stays healthy next year. A guy with this history of injuries could easily go down again, and then he won't get drafted at all. If he does make it through and have another big season, he probably will move up from being a 4th round pick. Maybe with a 6th year he can actually be one of the rare Oklahoma players to graduate.

Almost none of the music in Kill Bill was original/composed strictly for the film. Can't nominate it otherwise.

I don't think that's true, but I won't be surprised if it wins this time. Compared to what the first two movies had to contend against, this is shaping up to be a pretty light year as far as the range of competition goes.

He's still right though, to an extent. I liked the actual material in the endings, even if the coronation/celebration was hokey and the fades obtrusive, but the pacing was death. If you watch 10 hours together, it works. As the coda to a 3-hour film, I felt that it - along with a lot of other weird editing choices throughout - really dragged down the third movie in and of itself.

I desperately want to play this but I can't find it at Blockbuster. Where the hell can I find it without having to shell out $50? Any online rental places? Both Hollywood Video's near me have at least one copy available for rent. Got any near you? Blah. There's a bunch in Charlottesville, where I go to college, but of course I'm home for the break. I'm going to hit up Video Library tomorrow, and if that fails going to look for the online place LaParkaMarka mentioned.

University of Virginia. My first choice...and I'm from Florida. But it's pretty, the perfect size, and as I've said before, the English department is gleefully overendowed. It was down to UVA, Johns Hopkins, and NYU, but in the end I decided to go Cavalier.

I don't think many people really came away from Jurassic Park thinking about environmental issues.

Sean Astin, far and away. Even though I don't love these movies, he definitely provides the human core and most of their best moments. Rock on, Samwise. McKellen's good, but Gandalf's so archetypal and grand that he rarely gets the quiet moments Sam gets. Viggo Mortensen is also really good - I don't care much for his line delivery, but his facial tics and whole body movement are detailed, detailed, detailed. I got more out of how he moved and when he moved than anything he said in the third movie. Physically, at least, I felt like he gave the most natural performance in all three pictures.

I'm deeply pleased at all the Lost In Translation nominations. It's wonderful, and I hope this translates into a few Oscar nominations. Pointless as the actual awards are, I do like to see the really good stuff get acknowledged. Though I didn't see many of the Best Drama nominees missing out on Best Picture - Return of the King, Mystic River, and Cold Mountain are locks and Master and Commander has had a lot of buzz too - so the chances of the comedies getting in are pretty low.
