But you're assuming that this makes the pledge offensive or something, and that's retarded. You act like Christians are some stuck up lot that is offended by the smallest little thing. God is a descriptive term, why the hell would we be offended by the pledge? Just becuase we, also, refer to him as God doesn't mean that we're offended by other religions who agree that, somewhere up there, there's a God. You're making ridiculous assumptions to support your barely-cogent argument, and that's why I'm being a prick. -

Not really. "God" isn't a proper name as much as it's a descriptive term. Catholics, for example, hold little reverence to the term "God". We hold it for "the Father" or "Jesus", but "God" is more used in descriptive terms. But, it's cute that you're assuming that with your vast knowledge of theology, you know exactly what you're talking about. -

No, because "taking the name of God in vain" implies using God in a negative context, but kudos for taking the ten commandments out of context anyway! A true fundamentalist, you are -

I'd debate whether "under God" really endorses Christianity (it doesn't; whether it should be in there is another debate in and of itself, but it's not an endorsement of Christianity or any religion, for that matter), but really, whatever I think I've made it clear that I think this kid is a weenie, and that's not going to change because someone I tend to agree with disagrees with me in this case. -
Ben is 100% certain to start Sunday, so take that into account with your predictions. He's "probable" and both Cowher and he have said through the media that he's starting this week.

Dumb argument. First of all, the pledge harms nobody. Your comparison of pledge = lynching is specious at best and offensive at worst. It's not the same logic at all. He doesn't believe in the pledge for an idiotic reason to begin with; nobody is forcing him to say "under God" or anything at all. The teacher would've never noticed had he simply remained silent during the whole ordeal. However, his point was to make a stand and make it obvious that he was protesting; thus, he sat down and made a scene. That's why I'm calling him a drama queen. I don't have problems with protest in general or disagreeing with something; God knows I've protested things and God knows I don't disagree with quite a damned lot of what the government says. However, sitting down and disavowing the pledge because you don't believe it should have the words "under God" in it -- or, worse, just because you don't believe in God and therefore you shouldn't have to pledge respect to the country that lets you be present in the classroom in the first place -- is teenage immaturity and nancyboyism at its worst. -

Your argument is that he is being patriotic by being disrespectful. Yes, that's a stupid argument. -

It's his right not to stand. It's my right to think he's a spoiled brat for drawing attention to himself about something so fundamentally small. -

Oh come on! I acknowledged that he has the right to do what he did, I was just stating that anyone who actually utilizes that right is worthy of disdain for being a nancy boy. What the hell is wrong with keeping your self-righteous crap to yourself? There are circumstances that are very worthy of protest, and by all means, I support your right to march when your freedoms are being encroached. But when some high schooler posts something that probably didn't even happen with the intention of drawing sympathy and support on an internet message board, I'm GONNA roast him for his snivelling crybabyism. It's the American way. -

My issue is that the point was to draw attention to himself. That's why I'm calling him names and mocking his sense of persecution. -

No, he's using the right to protest in order to draw attention to him for a cause he marginally believes in. Therefore, he is either: A) A drama queen or B) A student council member, which is far more indefensible. There's nothing wrong with protest, but there's no reason to draw unncessary attention to yourself because you think you've got some shiteating grin on your face and you think today is the day to STICK IT TO THE MAN and flip the bird to America. The Pledge is hardly a burden on atheists, agnostics, wiccans, or canines. It's a little show of respect. You can stand and keep your fucking mouth shut for all I care, but refusing to stand because you don't believe in God is just plain nancy boyism. -

No one claims you don't have the right to sit down. I'm just saying your choice to sit down makes it obvious that you're a whiny bitch and probably an abuse victim. -

No, it doesn't really. First of all, I'm calling shenanagans on your story, because no principal would be dumb enough to subject himself to the shitstorm something like this would cause. Second, standing for the pledge is simply a sign of respect for your nation, and it has nothing to do with separation of church and state. Separation of church and state has nothing to do with the pledge, really, either; maybe they shouldn't have "under God" in it, but that doesn't make it necessarily religious anyways. You're just being an ornery, snotty brat.
