Kind of a weird stat, but in his career, Todd Helton has 3 HRs against the Expos on his birthday (including today).
-
Something that might be interesting, once you get around to finishing all the names already in your hat, might be to look at someone who is a lock for the Hall at an earlier point in their career (Bonds just as a Pirate or Clemens just as a Red Sox, for example).

They could just make it 'Hard Hat Giveaway' day.

You're going to have a heart bat clean-up? Does it have arms?

Oh, I know, but this season has been so fucking horrible that it's clouding my vision.
-
I was more a fan of Moneyball last year than I am this year, not that this horrible season has really been any fault of J.P. Ricciardi. As for the actual book, I'll probably be getting for my birthday next week and if not, I'll just pick it up sometime after that.

I think I'm going to lock this thread before it gets ugly.

Pfft, the date on the back of my TV says August 1981 and it's still going strong. *knocks on wood*

That baseball game's almost over, though. It's been pretty one-sided, too.

Just to make sure that everything doesn't get crammed into one thread since we didn't have one of these yesterday. One weird observation, the people doing the softball coverage for CBC/TSN appear to be calling the game via telephone. Not really sure why.

Bill O'Reilly vs Paul Krugman moderated by Russert
treble replied to Jobber of the Week's topic in Current Events
O'Reilly has a great talent in turning great debators into jello... and NOT because he's good at debating, but because he is nothing but a bully! He interrupts, passes EVERY counterpoint off (sometimes by just waving his hand and saying 'whatever'), and is basically unbeatable because of it. However, if you ever see someone getting the upper hand on him, it's a beautiful sight, because that point he either calls you a moron, tells you to shut up, or screams for your mic to be cut And THATS why no journalist, conservative or democrat, takes him seriously. He's a joke I wasn't saying anything of his debating skills, I was just mentioning how Krugman came off as being terrified of O'Reilly. -
Finally, Canada wins it's first medal. A bronze in women's syncho diving.

And, for whatever reason, NBC was showing swimming heats when what everyone is calling the biggest race so far in the Olympics, the men's 200 M freestyle was going on. I can understand wanting to show it in prime time and all that, but is it going to hurt ratings to show it live, too?

Yeah, this Krugman guy was scared shitless. O'Reilly would just start going off and it looked like he wanted to disappear into his chair. -

The thing is, you're making it seem as though the whole show was just 3 hours of booing. So, the crowd did the wave during a match they didn't like, so they booed Eugene, the supposed sympathetic babyface. Who cares? They gave nice pops to Orton, HHH, Angle, and Jericho, guys who they supposedly like. Not liking exactly what WWE tells them to like isn't being disrespectful.
-
Ah yes, yet another well thought out post. When you have guys busting their ass to try and put on a good show, with what they have been given and then the fans boo like hell, not at any one specific thing but instead just about EVERYTHING, that is indeed being disrespectuful to the workers. The fans didn't boo everything, though, they just booed the stuff they didn't like. Orton, HHH, and Jericho all got relatively big pops and they seemed to like the Orton/Benoit thing after the match was over.
-
Exactly, because he's reacting to a sign. I doubt he's going around saying "Remember me, I'm the guy who screwed Bret?" to someone that could care less. He could have just ignored it, rather than going into the crowd and waving the sign in front of the entire arena. Also, if they really didn't want people chanting it, the King wouldn't have come down during the commercial and do some long promo about how he didn't want Earl to screw him over. They invite it themselves, which is why the majority of people still chant it.
-
Whoever sent Hebner out to ref the Orton/Benoit match is to blame for the 'You Screwed Bret' chants. They know that the Canadian fans will chant it because it's fun to do (trust me, 99% of the people chanting it don't care about the Montreal incident anymore), and they still trotted him out there. And Hebner doesn't exactly shy away from it when the cameras aren't on him. I was at a Raw in Toronto last year and, of course, people broke out the chant when he came out. Instead of ignoring it, he took a sign from the crowd that said 'Bret Screwed Bret' and starting waving it along with the chants. It wouldn't surprise me if he was playing it up with the crowd while they were showing the video package.

Oh no, not here. NBC is a huge network, but with no deals with our basketball, baseball, football (our football, not yours), or hockey leagues, all they have is the Olympics and they're going to hold onto that for as long as they possibly can. Which sucks, because they never do it justice. Actually, NBC does have the NHL US TV deal now. It'll kick in whenever the next hockey season starts.

I don't know why the Jays keep insisting on using Vinny Chulk as the set-up man. He's blown a 4 run lead in the 8th and didn't even get an out. This confirms my belief that David Bush is the unluckiest pitcher in baseball.
-
The worst thing about the baseball game was Vic Rauter and Warren Sawkiw, although Rauter screaming out 'Oh, Stubby!' when Stubby Clapp got a hold of one that went foul was pretty awesome.

Most of the guys on SportsNet are actually pretty decent, but I'd put a lot of them behind the top few guys on TSN (Cory Woron and Blake Price being my favourites, but when that Dan O'Toole guy is the worst of the bunch, you've got a pretty good bunch). On SportsNet, Mike Toth is a lot better now than he was when he was on TSN back in the day and Darren Millard is pretty good, but after that the rest of their late show crop is pretty weak. Don Taylor is good, too, but he always seems to be doing some weak Chris Berman impression.
