    OAO Smackdown Thread For 12/30/05

Shit, when is the last time WWE did an interview at the old 80s/90s interview stand by the entrance? This might be a decent weekly thing to do with Funaki actually.

Two important New Japan 1/4 notes

This may be a dumb question, but how can NJPW even think that having Akebono (or fucking ANYONE) announced something like only 2-3 days before the show is going to change shit? Maybe even a better question is how does any company in Japan think sales can go quick on tickets when they hotshot in such a manner? Maybe I just dont understand the system over there in how word gets spread about things like this, but it's akin to a guy being signed to a Sunday ppv on a Friday here in the states, with no TV time even given to promote such. Just seems like REAL bad business to even think of doing such a thing.
  4. Alvarez and Meltzer were talking TNA a few weeks ago and hit on something regarding making stars. They said that TNA needs to focus on making 2, 3 max people into stars. They said if you put the focus on making 2-3 guys, the rest will come, but if you try to make 25 guys into stars, you'll fail at making even one. Thats such a good point, it should be damn near a rule of thumb for bookers.
  5. The One Cent PPV idea was that is was just a Best of show, and the only reason they probably had it on ppv was that they didnt have any other clearance otherwise on FSN at the time. More I think about it, WERE they even on FSN at all when they did that? Now they could just do it on Spike straight up. Makes much more sense that way anyway.

What, like that isnt possible? I could see a guy like Styles do that actually.

TNA iMPACT Rating for Christmas Eve

"Bush league" to me is shitty production, apathetic fans, and a bad product overall. The announcing is fine to me. So with that said, I dont think TNA comes off bush league at all. The Orlando setting is fine, as the arena is maybe small, but it still looks really good on TV and they have started to really make use of it's settings as brawls are starting to go all over the arena at times. BUT the problem with the Orlando setting is that it's monotonous. So if anything, the product suffers some just because they stick in Orlando all the time. That does get boring. Also, just because they got a .9, it might mean they did get a record viewership as you'd have to break down that number more to find out. Not making excuses in the least but cmon, even keeping their same number on a holiday is strong anyway you slice it. Moving that rating will take time and they have to be patient and keep working on improving the product, and more importantly, as people have stated here, promoting themselves here and there with various advertising mediums and such to get people to even KNOW they are on Spike.

TNA iMPACT Rating for Christmas Eve

At the time the match happened, the general consensus was that TNA was blowing a PPV-level ME wad on Impact, so I'd say yes he is (or was). That's about right. And most definately he was. I thought they still could do something with him here recently, but the last two ppvs have shown they need to pull back a bit on him for now, but I think it's still not a bad idea to long term build him for a title run. That is if he can survive this rehash of being aligned with Jarrett.

    24 Season Five Teaser

Yeah I just did last night. Wasn't too bad, but was kind of "eh" as it didnt really give out too much than was obvious going into this season. Would be kind of cool if they actually would have started the season with this prequal, and then actually revealed who is under that biker's helmut to add upon it.

A clip from Eli Roth's Hostil....

Didn't Rob say that cut was gone and all that was left was the version he released? That would suck if that was the case. You'd think that cut has to be in some archives at Lions Gate though, or something. Given the whole unrated/uncut phenomenon in DVDs the past few years, this would have been one of those films perfect for it.

Not to stray too off topic, but why the fuck havent they ever released a House of 1,000 Corpses unrated/NC-17 version?

TNA iMPACT Rating for Christmas Eve

Totally in agreement there with ya. Most of the matches are pretty quick, also, and since Brown/Jarrett they really havent had a main event of significance. Making it two hours could build a decent main event week to week, much like Raw/Smackdown attempts to do most weeks. Plus of course, if you do 2 hours a week, you can actually (*gasp*) have most, if not all, of your roster on every week in some substantial role, be it cutting a promo, working a match, etc. ---- Forgot to mention how shocked I am to see that rating this week. I thought, for sure, it would be down somewhat because of the holiday. Plus, to be honest, I didnt think the show this week was that good at all really. Roode v. Christian as the main event didnt grab me one bit.

    Final Resolution lineup

The other option was Shannon Moore, which seemed premature at best to actually do a match already with those two. Honestly, there isnt any other decent option that doesnt scream AJ v. glorified X division jobber. I have no problem with bringing in this guy from NJPW, as it will likely make AJ look better anyway (since this NJPW guy is pretty good from what I've seen) and give him some needed rub with a win from losing the title last month. Honestly, I'm really surprised they still have any sort of repriore with NJPW after the crap with Liger being brought in as he was. Plus Dickerson is out of the company and apparently he was always the guy that dealt with NJPW. ---- As far as the Raven thing goes, I think TNA really should push hard to get Terry Funk in for a shot, have him job to Raven (obviously, as the Larry Z-Raven feud is LAME) and then afterwards, you have some sort of angle where Funk actually takes over Zbysko's spot as CEO or whatever the fuck he is. Whoever this opponent ends up being, I just hope it's good as this seems to be the blowoff to this feud with Raven/Larry. And I can't agree with having Zbysko be that guy who takes him on, talk about a dissapointment if thats the case.

Booker T injured at house show

Meltzer is reporting he might be back in something like 2 weeks time. The plan was, apparently, to do match seven - or matches six and, if necessary, a seven, at the Rumble. Who knows if they will stick to that plan now, it's still possible as all it would take is Benoit getting a fast rollup win over Booker this week, and then they give Booker time off til the Rumble.

    Wrestling Underground PPV

Yeah it was only an hour long. Everyone on the show except DDP and Credible cut backstage promos too, in between matches. Pretty basic shit and I emphasize SHIT.

    Vince Russo on LAW

I would normally agree with you, but I did just finish his book and there was alot of startling things in it that surprised me that he admitted he fucked up with. Such as the Taker crucifiction angle, crash tv, etc. He came off very modest in the book - he basically would comment in current time on what he initially wrote 2 years ago as an autobiography on his career. Made for a weird, yet interesting retrospective on his past by Russo himself. Its not as bad as one would think. There was a lot of praising of God and such, but if he really is on that path, I dont think it should be held against him. Doubted upon? Perhaps a bit but I dont think he's done anything post-"saved" that screams that he's still what he used to be. The new promotion actually IS supposed to be, first and foremost, used for counceling workers, current and past, about the dangers of the business. So I'll give him a little bit of credit until it's blatantly obvious he's being someone he really isnt (which was how he used to be, he'll admit it himself in the book).

Which is the best TNA DVD?

The X division one is probably pretty good, I'd take that over Final Resolution. Actually, you may want to check Wal-mart.com for the TNA Anthology set. Its got Victory Road, Turning Point, and Lockdown for $20. Most of the other TNA DVDs are listed at $25 each, so thats a hell of a deal.

Booker T injured at house show

Ouch - unless they want to bury Booker by having him job out quickly to Benoit one after another, so goes that program It was good so far considering this has been Booker's best push and role on Smackdown since he arrived on the brand.

The OAO Raw Thread for 12/26/05

Thats probably the only thing that can save that character right now. They either need to add some edge back to his gimmick or turn him heel, or maybe both. Problem with turning him heel is that he will probably not sell as much merchandise as he would before, and thats why Cena is on top right now in the first place.

The OAO Raw Thread for 12/26/05

Thats what is mind boggling about all of that - basically it buried, in a way, the actual DVD - this is the same DVD that they are supposed to be shilling out like crazy right now but instead we got that for no real apparent reason but to continue to use Montreal as a backdrop to characters and storylines. It's like they they don't want Bret now after all, perhaps if the DVD isnt going off shelves as much as they were hoping(?). Shit like that will never cater to Bret at all, and since I thought WWE apparently would just do just about anything to get Bret back in the company, it's just illogical as hell to fathom what they did tonight.

A clip from Eli Roth's Hostil....

Wow, wasnt expecting that. Looks like a great film, will probably be checking it out opening day - seems like this is going to be getting a really strong national release with all of the advertisements for it lately?

The OAO Raw Thread for 12/26/05

May be stretching for a reason for that surreal (and in the most fucked up way possible) segment to end the show but this MAY be it. Is there a chance that Michaels wins the Chamber match (or at best something is led to Michaels/Cena where HBK wins the belt) and they build a storyline out of McMahon constantly trying to screw him out of the title when Michaels gets it? It just seems so blatantly passe that WWE is probably all about it. The biggest thing out of the show tonight was that the Elimination Chamber stip matches werent nearly as cool as last year (Didnt the opponents of the guys in the Chamber match get a chance to be added into the match with a win when they did this last year?) and that in one ten minute (or less) segment we got Angle doing the stupid shit we all assumed it would be, Vince doing another oh-so repetitive double entere promo with the girls, and then them probably doing the only even half interesting angle on Raw with Mickey James becoming some stalker in love/lust with Trish? Did anyone find the Masters/Guererro match finish, or lack thereof, kind of odd as in a, this was not scripted, way? The ref was certainly talking quite a bit to Masters when he was out on the floor. Was hoping Chavo, as crazy as it may be, could have been added to the Chamber match as (and I hate to say this) I think he can really get over with using the family name and in the honor of Eddy as a reason for a decent push. Not sure what was up there with the non-finish. Even Styles blatantly pointed out the obvious. What a fucking weird show this was!

    Eddie Guerrero Autobiography

I dont know how long its been out, but I picked up a paperback version of Regal's book over the weekend if that helps.... HBK's book, of course, just came out. Russo did a book that came out not too long ago as well. Started just reading that recently (The Russo one) and its full of religious talk and really hasnt interested me too much yet. But I just started it and skimming through the chapter list, I'm sure there will be interesting stuff ahead. Whether it is fact or not remains to be seen.

    Ebert's review of "Wolf Creek"

I was just going to say Ebert actually IS fair to most good horror. Case in point Devils Rejects. Anyway I went to this yesterday and I gotta say, be careful of the commercials praising it as "one of the best horror films of the blah blah blah." This was not very good stuff when all was said and done. Seemed to have that gritty dirty style of filming almost like High Tension, with concepts from TCM intertwined. With that said, I really didnt want to see a TCM redux (and a badly put together one at that), and this is what it ended up being for the most part. Some occaisional gorey spots, but not nearly as much as you would think from the Ebert review, where he kind of emphasizes a line was crossed in this film, and I didnt see that at all. The three main characters, who are on a provervial road trip and end up in the middle of nowhere, were very hard to draw sympathy upon since, especially the two girls, were making really stupid decisions in trying to survive - I think someone pointed upon this already. Didnt really get much of anything out of the killer either, as he seemed like a fucked up Crocodile Dundee or something, most of the time someone to laugh at because he's so out of touch with society. Just was not a very put together movie at all, and took a good while to even get anywhere, a good halfway through the movie. The ending was something of a very anticlimatic finish to the mess, but I suppose tried to play into a "true story" (hard to explain without spoiling the movie) feel for it. But why they even had to put that "based on true events" tagline into this was kind of absurd - you'll see what I mean, assuming this actually ISN'T the case that it's a true story or based on actual events, etc. All in all just didnt like this much at all and I'd suggest to everyone to avoid this, as it's probably not as good as you would think.
  25. Holy shit, this guy is a bigger loser than I once thought - now this is just getting funny. Nobody cares about you, man, so take a hike. It's sad that you're wasting time posting this garbage now under a second name just to tell us you're better than us. You do realize that's all this has come to now, you being a bitter idiot about this. You're pathetic and your lack of overall insight on the business is mind boggling, especially considering you are actually apparently a worker. I love how you say that to know pro wrestling you HAVE to be a wrestler. Thats the biggest fucking absurdity you've said out of all of this. Think about that statement - that means numeous legendary minds in this business who UNDERSTAND IT apparently dont know pro wrestling because they havent been a worker. So now because Canada and Mexico have "tradition" that makes them "real pro wrestling" even though lucha, as I have stated before and you didnt even counterpoint it, is basically the closest thing a typical X division match is comparative to. They're both of the same criteria under your narrow minded viewpoint of what is apparently pro wrestling and what apparently isnt. Being chuck full of tradition has nothing to do with it. Keep reassuring yourself you are better than us, big boy - I'm sure it will get you nowhere.
