The disadvantage of being the Oregon head coach is that you have to do Phil Knight's bidding. The advantage is that you get to play around with Phil Knight's money and buy lots of toys to lure in recruits.

It's more like "take his party down with him." Harper would come so close to meeting the goalposts in Quebec and then falling too short because he didn't have the patience to do something like cut culture budgets after an election instead of before. Now he can't control himself and he's undoing years of careful work. His rhetoric of "SEPARATIST SEPARATIST if you vote for the Bloc you are a SEPARATIST" had made sure that the Conservatives won't win a seat in Quebec for a very long time. Those 10 MPs they have there might as well pack their bags and leave them by the door until they're asked to go. He needs to go have a coffee break with Sarah Palin and they can whine together about how their opponents are all nation traitors. I am hoping that in the near future we get to see a video on the news of a Quebec flag being burned in Alberta somewhere, just to really drive the last nails into the CPC's coffin in Quebec.

The only reason I see that being possible is that at U-Dub, he would have a team that, with a good game plan and solid recruiting, is just as likely as any other in the Pac-10 to emerge as the conference's #2 program behind USC. Whereas if he stays at Texas Tech, he's going to be constantly running 3rd fiddle to Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 south, not to mention the endless supply of money at T. Boone Pickens University.

Not to completely rehash an argument from the previous thread, but someone at CNNSI put together the following numbers. This is for anyone who thinks Stoops and Oklahoma have been running up the score while Brown and Texas have not:

    NFL Week 13

Of all the absurd moves Lovie Smith made last night, the strangest one had to be punting the ball with about 3 minutes left while down by 20. I'm sorry, but what's the point in effectively giving up the game when you still have a chance of winning, however remote? It's not like it really hurts the Bears any more if they can't convert and Minnesota tacks on another score, does it?

Once again, I challenge anyone who is complaining about this to propose a superior tie-breaking method for a three-way tie in which the teams are all 1-1 head to head. Like it or not, someone has to win the Big 12 South.

I expect in that situation we would see a sort of "poll reorganization" by the voters that ends up with Texas Tech ahead of Texas.

For all the complaining all the pundits and commentators are doing on TV with regards to politicking, polls, style points, computer rankings, and so on, I haven't heard a single one of them suggest a preferable alternative method to resolve a three-way tie and determine who plays in the Big 12 championship game.

Do you think ESPN can convince enough voters to change their vote to Texas? Even if OU wins by 40. Because ESPN is saying that result doesn't matter. So I'm wondering if they can influence enough voters to move OU down from 2 in the polls and Texas up to 2. I think you give ESPN way too much credit here. They aren't as important as they think they are.

The whole debate is becoming so obnoxious to listen to because so many of the arguments are completely illogical and self-contradictory (such as the whole "head-to-head matters for OU/UT but not for "UT/TT" nonsense). Against my better judgment (which would be to simply wait until at least today's games are completed, to see how the dominoes fall) I will make a few comments about this: 1. No, a playoff would not solve anything here (since this seems to be the immediate refrain whenever any complex situation shows up in college football). Someone has to win the Big 12 South and play in the conference championship game. Assuming today's games go as expected, this winner cannot be determined by records, or by the head-to-head tiebreaker. So there simply has to be a less-than-satisfactory, guaranteed-to-cause-controversy method to break the tie, and the BCS rankings don't seem to be any worse or better than whatever else might get used (points differential, strength of schedule, AP poll, away record, whatever). Short of playing a 3-way UT/OU/TT game on a triangular field, a winner must be determined by some numerical method. 2. Someone will undoubtedly say "but if there was a playoff then both teams could get in so there wouldn't be any problem". This assumes that any such playoff would include at-large teams, and whoever misses out would be one of said at-large teams. Moreover, it would actually punish whoever finishes first by requiring them to play an extra game against a good team just to qualify while the "loser" gets to sit back and wait with their spot secure, which is just as illogical as anything that will happen this year. 3. I've said this several times and so I'm probably sounding like a broken record, but this just goes back to the stupidity of artificially breaking the conference into divisions, and having "division winners". By all means, have a conference championship game. But just pick the two best teams in the conference to participate in it.

What was the best team ever?

A team that got blown out once in a 6 game tournament and was average at best until the final two games has no business in a "greatest team ever" conversation.

    NFL Week 12

If Vince Young returns to the starting lineup in Tennessee this year, I will piss on myself and then take a picture with my dick. And then I'll post it at The Pit. Ain't gonna happen. I understand the Titans sticking with Collins as the starting QB for the rest of the season, but I don't see why Fisher and the coaching staff don't try working him into a few plays. Put him in the backfield with Collins and use him as a threat to run, pass, or even break out into the flat as a receiver. With a guy that talented they should try to make use of him even if it's not having him line up under the gun every down.

Yeah Florida's position is such that they really don't need to care where they are in the polls/BCS. Win out, and they finish #1. Lose to Alabama, and they are obviously finished. Lose to FSU, and they need a lot of help, and are quite possibly finished regardless of what happens with Alabama. Really, the only reason the BCS standings matter right now is the possible three-way tie in the Big 12 South. This also just brings me back to a point I made a few weeks ago, namely that it is stupid to split conferences into divisions and then have the "division winners" play in the conference championship game. If conferences want to run a title game, they should simply pick the top two teams in the conference and have them play. Not only does this likely create a better game, it also increases the likelihood of that conference's champion playing in the BCS title game. And it's not like they can even fall back onto the "we want to avoid rematches" excuse, since Missouri vs. Texas is a possibility for the Big 12 championship. If Texas-Oklahoma were a possibility, it would remove whatever "controversy" is present right now, create a highly appealing game, and guarantee the Big 12 a spot in the title match.

They're not in the hunt anymore. They CANNOT play for the nat'l title because of how badly they lost yesterday. That's why you can take them out of the argument. The winner of Alabama/Florida will be in the game and the loser is out of the discussion even if Alabama loses in OT by a single point. That leaves Texas and Oklahoma and the H2H should matter because they actually played each other. It's silly to say that all of the other games they played were more important than you know, the one where they played EACH OTHER and Texas won by 10 at a neutral site. In every other sport H2H is the main tiebreaker, but in college football it's the other games which is why the system is the drizzles. But this isn't about the national title or BCS championship game, it's about who wins the Big 12 South and plays in the Big 12 title game. And as far as that goes, Texas Tech is most definitely still in the hunt, because if they win and Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State, then TT plays Missouri, not Texas. You claim "In every other sport H2H is the main tiebreaker, but in college football it's the other games" which is simply not true IF you can actually do head-to-head, which you can't do here because of the potential three-way tie. Other sports use secondary tiebreakers like strength of schedule, points differential, road record, etc. as supplementary tiebreakers. Why is it such a big deal that certain college football conferences look at the BCS rankings?

I honestly think in that scenario (ignoring a ton of other potential wackiness in the SEC and so on) you might see the voters trying to shift things around to get Utah or Penn State in the title game. The "co-champions" stuff is nonsense even if that's how the Pac-10 officially does it, no reasonable voter is going to legitimately view USC as Pac-10 champ after losing to the other "co-champion", and might choose to punish them in the voting, if recent history is any indication. Now, there is obviously no guarantee this would happen, or even if it did that the computer rankings would agree with the whim of the voters, but it's possible.

Once again, "Texas beat Oklahoma so they should be ranked higher" simply does not work now that we have 3 one-loss teams from the same conference who are all 1-1 against each other. The season now has to be evaluated in its totality, and I think Oklahoma, with its demolition of Texas Tech, close loss against Texas, and its two high quality OOC wins (probable Big East champion Cincinnati and Mountain West #2 TCU), has the best resume of any 1-loss team in the country.

Rushing the field at the end of the game has pretty much reached its nadir with the finish of the UW/WSU game today. The writing was on the wall given the fact that it was happening in practically every home win his season by a team over a higher ranked team, but storming out there after your team beats a winless opponent is the ultimate jump-the-shark moment.

Are the commentators on ESPN's game just being deliberately dense by talking about how "it doesn't make sense to rank Oklahoma ahead of Texas if they beat Texas Tech, because Texas beat Oklahoma"? Is it that hard to figure out that under that scenario, the "team A beat team B so they should be ranked ahead" logic simply breaks down because of the W/L circle that would be produced?
