I liked it quite a bit. Sean Bean as Odysseus was the screen stealer in my opinion. He was given good material and pulled it off very well. I also liked how they didn't drag out the ending (*cough*LOTR:ROTK*cough*).

This is standard Al-Qaeda modus operandi: commit a violent act that they would do under any normal circumstances (I'm sure we can all agree that beheading someone doesn't require much motivation for Al-Qaeda terrorists), and then associate it with the hot-button anti-American topic of the day. Bin Laden himself was the master of this: depending on the time period and what was getting the most play in the media, he was at war with the USA because of the Gulf War, because of military bases in Saudi Arabia (probably the closest one to the actual truth), because of the Palestine-Israel conflict, or a variety of other reasons.

So, the Nuremburg verdict makes them non terrorists or thugs? Scary thought. The Nuremburg trials, for all of the good they may have had, were HORRIBLE in a purely legal sense. Let's leave it at this --- if they happened in an American court, all of the sentences would have been overturned. And who knows what happened to the Nazis in prison? Most likely, they were not treated terribly nicely --- and they SHOULDN'T have been treated nicely. I was responding only to the first line he posted. I quoted all the stuff about terrorists because I was lazy, that had nothing to do with the Nazi point. Now, there's a big difference between being treated nicely in prison and being abused, raped, and tortured. No one is expecting these prisoners to get treated like they are some white collar criminals or mob snitches doing a stint in Club Fed.

Hitler and the Nazis were fighting for a cause they believed in, too. Should we not have fought them? It's precisely that kind of thinking that causes so many problems. That ninny way of thinking leads to terrorists being relabeled as "freedom fighters." No, they're fucking terrorists. They're not soldiers, they're thugs, and except for a few isolated incidents, we have not been treating them like the worthless thugs they are. That's hardly the same thing. The Nazis were tried, convicted. and hanged at Nuremburg, but they weren't raped by the guards while awating their punishments. I don't see why so many people are defending this when Bush and Rumsfeld themselves are not only pointing out how these actions are disgusting and must be punished, but also bringing to light even more serious charges to light voluntarily with no impetus from the media. Kudos to both of them for having the guts to stand up and call a spade a spade when most of the talking heads want to turn this into some partisan issue and deflect blame.

Bush offered an apology today to King Abdullah of Jordan and reiterated it during a joint press session with the King, so that issue should be a non-issue now. The first post in this thread is so lame and worthless I'm not going to address it specifically, I will comment on one response: That's really a red herring. Bush's actions should not be dictated based on what Hussein does or doesn't do. He is supposed to be (and indeed is) on a higher moral ground than Hussein, and so "Saddam didn't do it either!" is a pretty hollow excuse. That being said, I don't think him apologizing or not is a big issue, although it's the sort of thing that couldn't really hurt.

Indurain is not as good as Armstrong. Merckx and Hinault are better, Anquetil is probably debatable. As far as those guys go, people don't list them because the Tour de France didn't get the media coverage in North America back in the 1970s and 1980s that it does now (this doesn't apply to Indurain, but as I said few regard him as better than Armstrong). Greg LeMond is the guy who really opened up the eyes of North Americans to competition cycling. As far as "greatest athlete" type competitions go, while Armstrong isn't the greatest pure cyclist of all time, I would offer that he is a better, more well-conditioned athlete than any of his predecessors, and a worthy contender for such a title.

Just to draw this transportation tangent back to the original topic, anyone else think this "whose bus was made where" nonsense to be the most pathetic non-issue yet? I did get a kick out of Begala and Novak on Crossfire today though, bragging about how the CNN Election Express was "100% American made" (anyone want to bet you will find some components on that bus made in Asia and/or Mexico if you look?).
