  1. Overturning laws on grounds of unconstitutionality is pretty much their job, no? If it was the gay marriage thing I'd agree with you (though I'm personally pro- gay marriage.) That's passing a law with no vote.

    More Moore Bashing

Honestly, I haven't seen the movie, but I did by the book 'Dude, where's my country', and from what I've heard, it largely concerns itself with the same topics Since I'm a liberal, and I liked Roger & Me, TV Nation, and in general Bowling for Columbine. 'Dude' was a bad book. It had no cohesiveness, it had no thesis. It's conspiracy theories were often half-baked, and he clearly wanted to have both ways with every issue. Blame bush for not doing something, then blame him when he does it. I really, really dislike Bush. He's the only president that has filled me with active resentment. (I know, Kerry's no great shakes either. Give me a McCain/Edwards ticket and you'll see a man happy for 4 years) However, the biggest problem in the country is that both parties are looking absolutely crazy. Allying themselves with Moore just out of vitriolic anger towards Bush just makes liberals look like crazies.

    Next gen favors Nintendo...

Where Squeenix goes, so go I. However, $500 is ridiculous, especially since I, and many gamers I know, barely watch TV, and have absolutely NO use for a Tivo. What use is a DVD burner on a PS2 anyway? Just a big memory card? I'm sure we're not going to be copying games and movies willy-nilly. Oh, while I love my PS2, it is the worst DVD player I've ever seen. I sincerely hope after the initial release fizzles, they release a scaled-down model for cheaper.

Proof Disgaea is RPG of the year

You all of course know a sequel is coming out right? Phantom Heart I believe? Disgaea is totally great. Best strat RPG I think I've ever played (besides MAYBE some of the Langrissers). since every other one was way easy by the end (except Langrissers and original FFT) Disgaea keeps up the challenge, and then there's TONS of stuff to do after you beat it. Great game.

Has there ever been a 5 star match?

I've got to say, as well, that while The great puro matches are the best matches I'VE ever seen, puro lets EVERYONE have a good long shot out there, pretty much seems like 10 minutes is minimum. So while we're glomming the great matches and feuds out of the last 20 years of puro, we're often missing a lot of TRULY atrocious matches. I'd rather watch a 2 minute Albert match, as awful as it is, than watch Muta in his lazy period mug for the camera and do lazy matwork for 20 minutes. And it DOES take a significant time investment to appreciate AJPW matches fully (with exceptions like the great Hansen Kobashi match). Some people realisically have time restraints. And AJPW will be extremely rewarding if you have the time to invest, but I think great WWF matches have as much instant gratification because of unlimited access to the weekly tv shows and deeper knowledge of the generally much broader characters. Plus, of course Puro is HIGHLY variable. Toryumon, is the most cracked-out, instant-gratification wrestling I've ever seen, so if you love TLC matches, you've got hours and hours of that kind of stuff available in that form. I think the puro fans are being pretty civil in this discussion. Everyone knows that if your exposure to wrestling is limited, then Bret/Austin 'I Quit' is pretty much the shit. And the fact that there are better matches out there, doesn't change the fact that it's the shit in any way. It just means there are matches out there that are better. It all comes down to one's measure of what the five asterisks really mean. I've generally agreed with, what I think coffin surfer's definition is: **** is an awesome, awesome match, but it gets exponentially harder as you go up the ladder to *****. It works becuase there are tons of awesome matches in all cultures that can rank ****, but for the purpose of ranking best matches of all time, having a special distinction above **** is necessary. P.S: Any lucha matches out there that someone would reccomend as MUST SEE? I haven't really been able to get into lucha at all, despite the fact that lucha crowds are awesome, completely losing their minds at points.

Who do you think would win in a fight?

The Spider-senses are, of course, the difference-maker. Not only does it give him an edge in a physical fight, any trap Bats has to spring, spidey's going to have a good chance of dodging.

Who do you think would win in a fight?

Actually a Punisher/Batman fight could be great, dramatically. Batman absolutely has him beat in just about every way, unless we're talking big pun sniping bats with a rifle while he's recouping at home.(which he'd never do.) But Punisher is the one character who exemplifies fighting wounded and toughing it out as much as Batman. It'd be a long, bloody fight, with Pun keeping coming after Bats until he was absolutely comatose. Bats would probably see a little bit of himslef in Punsiher as well. Also, am I the only one who thinks Spider-man has bats dead to rights? There's no fanboyism here, since I love both characters, But Spidey just matches up REALLY well against Bats, IMO.

    Watchmen

I always thought in my mind (no real basis for belief except for his swamp thing and golden age Superman stuff) that Moore had nostalgia for Golden Age and Pulp horror comic books. As I said, no backup from interviews, just an impression I got from stuff he's written.

    Watchmen

I will agree that the shipwrescked story was one too many layers of allusion, but think it was probably done more as a homage to the old horror pulp comics which ALan Moore may well have read as a kid, and certainly was one of his first projects (his excellent swamp thing stuff). While Watchmen is a TERRIFIC stand-alone comic (my fave), I think some of it is about expressing sadness for the loss of the simple, light-hearted comics of yesteryear (while it itself is dark, dense, and sad.) One of the prevalent themes of Watchmen, I think, is the universal theme of the loss of innocence and the sadness and anger of the aging man.

    Any fans of Tom Stoppard?

    Arcadia's a wonderful play. I need to read R & G some day.

    Just for fun

Batman is quick to pick up on others' weaknesses. He would notice HHH's freakishly small calves and kick him soundly in the shins, snapping his tibia.

    Just for fun

Well, I sort of misspoke, while I don't consider DKR canon, the fact that DC wouldn't commit either way suggests that THEY thought it was true to the characters, and none of the situations were unreasonable. There. Honestly, the arguements somewhat silly, because in the miriad different situations where the two would fight, there are all kind of variables. Will Supes really fight with all his power? Suffice to say, it can probably go either way at any time. Batman's ruthlessness, and close relationship with Supes gives him a certain advantage over him that he would lack against a simlarly powered foe like, say Doomsday. This is a total aside, but does anyone find this to be true: In supes own books I find him a little drab and boring, since it's hard to build and sustain suspense and conflict in a godly powerful, morally and emotionally unwavering hero. Yet, in guest appearances, and especially elseworl stuff like DKR and Kingdom Come, he's an awesome character, as the complete paragon who other characters can really play off of. I guess, when he's the focus, he's not that interesting in the long term, but others' reactions to and feelings about him (especially Bats) are great. And he's not boring at all when he's not the focus of the action, when we're not privy to his internal monologue. He's just a monstrous presence.

    Just for fun

No one ever seems to remember this, but Superman was in fairly bad shape entering the fight with Bats in DKR. I mean, he was a bloody skeleton, a few days ago. That's not a knock on Bats, he's an opportunist; but it makes it more 'realistic'. And the fact that DC wouldn't decide forever if DKR was canon, pretty much makes it canon in my book.

    Earth X

So I read it and liked it. Was a tad bit wordy (and this from a guy who likes masamune shirow) Are Universe X and Paradise X worth picking up? I've already read Kingdom Come, so I know it's basically a Marvel Universe clone. So..?

    Anyone read any....

Bond books are pretty good pulp entertainment, but nothing special. One of the things that makes the movies great is the sexuality. Bond obviously has nymnerous conquests, but it's always been done in a tasteful, sorta 'nudge nudge' style. The overt vulgarity (Which I certainly don't mind in other settings) sorta ruins the kitschy appeal, though my expectations probably have been propogated by the movies.

    Some FFX-2 questions...

Basically the rule of thimb is: Go everywhere, then hit the hotspots. With this strategy you should pick uyp pretty much all of the drrespheres, and do just fine on the last boss. I did this (sans FAQ) and was even able to pick up the Iron Duke. (Ultimate Accessory, basically a massive stat bonus to everything, the equivalent of the ultimate challenge of the game, 'sides 100% complete, or all grids.) I WOULD look up an ending guide on how to get the 'good ending, 'cause I didn't get it 1st time through, it's much more satisfying, and you have to do some pretty random shit to get iut. (you're in a weird place, tap the shit out the x button! for example.)

    WEEN!

What are some bands that you lovem that other people hate? And you can sort of understand why. I love Ween, Primus, The rev Horton Heat, Bjork, Red Elvises. A couple friends of mine love ICP, but that's my own ccross to bear.

    Any other Manga readers here?

Blade of the immortal owns all in terms of art. Helps that it has a good story. Shirow's Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed are great, though VERY wordy. Nausicaa is pretty great. I also bought Ranma.5 on CD. I know it's wron, but I already bought enough Ranma anime, and I didn't want to spend like, 500 dollars on it. It's a great fun read.

OAO Greatest Comic Book Artist Nomination Thread

No one's probably heard of him, but whoever draws Blade of the Immortal (now on Dark Horse) Is IMO the best comic book artist ever, BY FAR. Simply lovely art. As for U.S. art, I really like Bagley. Very clean lines, makes every character look like a million bucks. Great action scenes, without being too stylized.

    Punk'd cancelled

The show was mildly entertaining, but it pissed me off to see all the actors playing it really cool and suckering the people in and then Kutcher would pop in and say 'MY BOY WUZ GETTING PUNKED AND THAT"S HOW WE DO IT HERE AT PUNKED! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GET PUNKED! MR. CE-LE-BRI-TY!!!'

    Joss Whedon's Firefly

I gotta say, as a huge buffy/angel (besides least not the last 2/1 seasons of each, respectively) fan, I say no, don't buy it. It's an all right show, and some of the performances are winning, but all in all it's just pretty average TV in my book. Some snappy lines, which wiull feel familiar to any whedon fan, some good special effects, strangely slow pacing, and a couple genuinely annoying characters make this a buy far down the list when you have such luminaries as Homocide 6' under Buffy Angel Mr. Show (please) Newsradio Hell, I had more fun watching the not-so-self-consciously -silly-Alias than watching Firefly. Again not a bad show at all, but not worth buying.

    Captain America

vs. threads are fun. Hulk beats Batman (no real weaknesses to exploit, just too tireless.) Wolverine is even in an open environment. (tracking, durability, familiarity with surroundings match Batman's smarts) but gets whupped in an urban environment. I think SApider-man takes Bats in the first encounter. (spider-senses, agility, smart as hell too.) Let's say. .. Daredevil, how does he fare?

    Old school Marvel

Just got myself a little essential spider-man lovin'.. and it's a really fun read. Peter's such a great likable neurotic loser hero, the soap opera aspects are good (though every one and their mom knows the outcomes) And Mary Jane's dialogue is the funniest, campiest 60's shit I've ever read. All around good stuff. Anyone have a juxtaposition of what was goin on in DC?

    End of prime for RVD

Having THis guy's threads before, I have to conclude he's just about the most able troll ever. No cursing, fairly decent grammar, maybe a somewhat interesting premise to suck people in. Then he repeats the same stupid argument ad nauseum, , and reduces intelligent posters to foaming at the mouth. It's brilliant. Of course trolling is a really sad excuse for a hobby. And of course, if he is serious, he's a stupid wortless fuck. The fact that everyone's on to his game, and it still makes me want to post 20 long-winded retorts to his argumentsproves he's one of the most effective trolls ever.
