    275-Pound Prostitute Strips Attacker

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...t/naked_revenge 275-Pound Prostitute Strips Attacker BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A 140-pound rapist met his match in an angry, 275-pound prostitute, police said. Adrian Castillo Ramirez allegedly tried to sexually assault a 24-year-old Bakersfield prostitute who was nearly twice his weight. But she took his knife, stripped him naked and paraded him in front of other prostitutes, after asking how many of them had ever been forced into sex at knifepoint. Then she tried to take him — still naked — to the police station, reports said. Castillo was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, and with committing forcible sex acts on the 24-year-old and on a 37-year-old woman in a previous incident. He was convicted of four counts of rape in 1988. Castillo pleaded innocent Wednesday, and is being held on $250,000 bail, police said.
  2. http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/...1|,00.html Method Man, Redman Team for FOX Sitcom HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - - They've worked together in movies and on each other's records, so it's not much of a surprise that they're now collaborating on a TV project. The two rappers are set to star in a sitcom pilot for FOX, playing versions of themselves. The network has given a pilot commitment to the show, which comes from 20th Century Fox-affiliated Regency TV and writer Kell Cahoon ("Just Shoot Me," "The Larry Sanders Show"). The show will have the two rappers shaking up a mostly white neighborhood in New Jersey when they buy a house there. Method Man's mother eventually moves in to keep the boys in line. "It is a very traditional fish-out-of-water story, but Meth and Red really bring a lot of charm and their particular brand of charisma to it and make it very appealing," Regency's Erin Simon Berenson tells The Hollywood Reporter. Method Man and Redman pitched the show to Peter Aronson, who was then president of the production house, several months ago. Regency bought the idea quickly and sent them and Cahoon to FOX. Redman and Method Man starred in the 2001 comedy "How High" and have appeared together on screen several other times, most recently in "Scary Movie 3."

    Alf Gets a Talk Show

http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,13155,00.html ALF: The Comeback Kid, er, Alien by Julie Keller This just in from the home office in Melmac: The 7,385 signers of the "Bring Back ALF" online petition letter have finally gotten their wish. The furry, cat-craving extraterrestrial star of the 1980s NBC sitcom, most recently spotted slumming it for long-distance services 10-10-220 and 1-800-COLLECT, has just landed his own show on Nickelodeon. ALF's Hit Talk Show, starring the sarcastic puppet voiced by Paul Fusco, is a new series in development for Nick at Nite. Perhaps taking a hint from his latest 10-10-220 commercial where he channels Johnny Carson, the show will feature ALF (short for Alien Life Form--his given name is Gordon Shumway) interviewing a host of celebs. The gabfest is part of an effort by the Nickelodeon and TV Land channels (both owned by media giant Viacom) to garner a more adult audience in the post-kiddie viewing hours. Among the other shows on tap are two new adult-friendly animated series from Bill Cosby and Kelsey Grammer. For now Nickelodeon is banking on the alien appeal of ALF. Surprisingly, the hirsute space oddity has retained a major cult following since NBC pulled ALF off the air in 1990 after five seasons of dissing the daily activities of the Tanner clan, his de facto family after his spaceship crashed into their garage. Thirteen years after the show was canceled, hundreds of fan sites have sprung up on the Web. ALF's unlikely comeback began earlier this year when he was hired to hawk long-distance services opposite the likes of Terry Bradshaw, Mike Piazza, Emmitt Smith and Toby Keith. Apparently a couple lousy commercials weren't enough for ALF's most ardent fans, many of whom took to the Net to petition for a more appropriate vehicle to showcase ALF's unique talents. "ALF is the coolest, most loveable alien and for some reason he is off. Networks, get him back," begged Tara on the Planet Melmac Message Board in the dark days before Nickelodeon green-lighted the talk show. "Whoever the powers to be are: PLEASE!!! Bring back this show!!! With all the junk on the dial today... nothing would make me happier than to be able to watch my furry friendly buddy," added ALF aficionado Jody. Though none of Jody's TV ideas (such as ALF Returns, ALF Goes Hollywood, ALF Over the Rainbow, ALF visits London and the U.K., ALF: Return of the Family, ALF Return to Melmac or Winter Vacation with ALF) were picked up, ALF's Hit Talk Show is ready to go. The pilot was taped in November, and ALF's run as the next Dave/Jay/Oprah will begin early in 2004.
  5. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor..._son_arrested_3 Al Gore's Son Arrested for Pot Possession WASHINGTON - The son of former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore (news - web sites) has been charged with marijuana possession. Albert A. Gore III, 21, was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for driving a vehicle without its headlights on. Two passengers were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were identified as Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass. A Montgomery County, Md., police officer stopped the car, a dark-colored Cadillac, in Bethesda, a Washington suburb, around 11:30 p.m. Friday. The officer noticed the car's windows and sunroof were open, despite cold temperatures Friday night. There was also a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to a news release from the police department. A search of the vehicle turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana, and a soft drink can that also smelled of marijuana. All three were released pending trial. In September 2002, the younger Gore was ticketed for driving under the influence. He was pulled over and ticketed by military police just outside Fort Myer in suburban Virginia, but was not taken into custody. In the summer of 2000, Gore was cited by the North Carolina Highway Patrol for driving 97 mph in a 55-mph zone. Under an agreement with prosecutors, a reckless driving charge was dropped in the North Carolina case, but he was fined $125 for speeding and his driving privileges in the state were suspended.

  9. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...usa_impact_dc_1 Cash-Strapped Cities Grapple with Security Costs By Caroline Drees WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For cash-strapped U.S. cities and states, this week's heightened national threat alert level has reignited concerns about costs alongside fears of a new terror attack. From overtime for police officers to extra patrols at key facilities and borders, cities nationwide must spend tens of millions of dollars each week for the additional security measures, money some local officials say they do not have. "It's enormously frustrating," said Randy King, spokesman for the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a state capital of 49,000 people near the Three Mile island nuclear power plant. "All of it costs money, lots of money, and there's no federal reimbursement," he said. On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the color-coded terror alert level to "high" orange from "elevated" yellow -- the fourth such move this year. Lifting the level triggers a raft of automatic additional federal security precautions, and serves as a guideline for cities and states. "We need to recognize that every time the government ratchets up the threat level, we force the state and local government officials to make a choice," said analyst David Heyman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "These are officials who are struggling with huge budget shortfalls and they have to choose between protecting their communities and slashing other programs. That's difficult today," he said. While officials acknowledge the additional costs, they say you cannot put a price tag on security. STEEP COSTS A survey by the U.S. Conference of Mayors earlier this year showed cities spent about $70 million per week on extra security measures when the alert level was raised to orange. "State and local governments can't afford to constantly be on a high state of alert," said analyst Charles Pena at the libertarian Cato Institute. "So at some point ... they're likely to say: 'Sorry. We can't afford to do it this time,' -- especially considering all the false warnings." Security experts and local officials have criticized the system in the past, arguing that it was overused, ineffective and too much of a strain on tight budgets. But experts also say the Department of Homeland Security has finetuned the system and raised the bar for alerts. For that reason, CSIS's Heyman said, "We need to take this recent raising of the alert level more seriously." But a Democratic congressional staffer dealing with homeland security said the financial burden was too high. He said his office got frequent calls from frustrated local officials asking for help to pay for the tighter security. "The current alert level system doesn't do much but scare people and cost a lot of money," he said. In New York, which has been on "orange alert" since 9/11 and spends an estimated $5 million a week on additional security, National Guard units were deployed at airports, bridges and tunnels following Sunday's announcement, and more police were sent to vital infrastructure and tourist spots. But elsewhere in the United States, the response was more reserved. Donald Williamson, director of communications for the city of Akron, Ohio, which has a population of 217,000 people, said security was already tight. "There's not much more we can do." Williamson said the city was now spending an additional $35,000 every week to pay for overtime and security upgrades. Police in the northern state of Maine which borders Canada said they also had no plan to increase the number of officers on duty in response to the new alert level. 13. http://www.comcast.net/News/DOMESTIC//XML/...5f6fdc0d9b.html Illinois Seeks to Buy Drugs From Canada By MAURA KELLY, Associated Press Writer CHICAGO - To save the state money on prescription drugs, Gov. Rod Blagojevich wants the federal government to give Illinois the right to bend the law by shopping for medications in Canada. Blagojevich on Monday plans to ask the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to let the state buy drugs at lower prices in Canada for its 230,000 state employees and retirees, a spokeswoman said. Blagojevich is seeking approval from Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson for a pilot program through the new Medicare bill, spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff said Sunday. The bill grants Thompson the power to tell Congress that _ for the purpose of a pilot program _ reimportation of drugs poses no additional risk to the public's health and safety, Ottenhoff said. Illinois is asking him for a waiver authorizing the reimportation of an agreed list of prescription drugs, she said. "The benefit of doing it that way is they can work with us and figure out how best to set up a regulatory process and be a part of the process rather than watch some states move forward on their own," Ottenhoff said. New Hampshire and Boston have announced plans to buy prescription drugs from Canada as a way to cut costs, and Springfield, Mass., is already allowing its employees to do so. But Blagojevich, while continuing to push to overturn the federal ban on importing lower-priced drugs from Canada, has said he will not break the law. Bill Pierce, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, said previous laws have included similar language but Thompson and Donna Shalala, his predecessor, were never able to guarantee the safety of reimported drugs. "Nothing changes," Pierce said. "The bottom line is, twice there have been similar laws to allow reimported drugs but only if they have been certified as safe. Donna Shalala and Secretary Thompson have said they could not do that. That's the key part." Blagojevich also plans to announce that he and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty have scheduled a prescription drug summit for the nation's governors on Feb. 24, 2004, in Washington, D.C. "Illinois, like other states around the country, is dealing with limited resources at a time when we're trying to keep up with increased health care costs," Ottenhoff said. "This is a logical way to continue to provide services to the people of Illinois but do so at half the cost." Blagojevich commissioned a report earlier this year that said Illinois would save as much as $91 million if state employees and retirees bought drugs from Canada, which is illegal. Illinois spent $340 million on prescription drugs for its employees and retirees last fiscal year, a 15 percent increase from the previous year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration criticized that report for inflating savings and wrongly assuming Canadian health authorities can guarantee the safety of drugs sent to the United States. Brand-name drugs often cost less in Canada because of government price controls, but the FDA and pharmaceutical companies warn that buying Canadian drugs presents significant potential health and safety risks. Blagojevich's plan for a pilot program calls for developing a preferred drug list of prescriptions that can be safely obtained from Canada, Ottenhoff said. She said the list will be made up of mostly brand-name drugs for long-term use. Only FDA-approved drugs in FDA-approved dosages will be eligible for the list, Ottenhoff said, adding that only state employees and retirees could participate in the pilot program.

Justin Timberlake Accused of Being a Racist

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/celebrity/....jsp?current=24 Accused of Being a Racist 'N Sync's former tour manager is suing pop heartthrob Justin Timberlake for racial abuse. Duarte claims he was fired in 2000 because they were ashamed of having a black "front man" and replaced him with a white guy.
  21. Heyman apparently giving up... Word is that Paul Heyman has been much more diplomatic in dealing with WWE politics since his return. Of course, many feel the reason for that is because he no longer cares much about the creative side of WWE and has sort of given up on trying to get them to see things his way. He is still putting 100% into his on air character, but has more or less put his hands up when it comes to the creative side. Credit: Pro-Wrestling Torch VIP Updates Some WWE news items... - Many in WWE are worried that the company will cut talent and workers in January following the holidays. - WWE has taken extremely high security measures for their shows in Iraq. Most WWE workers don't even know when or where the Smackdown taping (edition of Smackdown which will air on Christmas night) will take place. With such a hostile area, these security measures are needed. Credit: 1wrestling.com
