City of San Francisco sues State of California
Firestarter replied to Jobber of the Week's topic in Current Events
Interesting choice of words. So now the city is sanctifying marriages? -
Tom isn't a Libertarian, he's a libertarian (small L) who votes Republican. Mike and I are obviously Republicans, and I'm pretty sure Vern Gagne, Spicy McHaggis, Vyce, and Downhome are too. Tyler and Jobber are obviously Democrats, but there are several more who tend to that side of the ideological spectrum - DeputyHawk and Zorin Industries are among the better ones. I'm probably forgetting any number of people, but a lot of the less regular posters are Democrats, or at least liberals. Anyway, the numbers are irrelevant; the only thing that matters is the strength of the argument. More people agreeing with you doesn't make you right.

Hilarious. So the CE folder would be just fine and dandy if we could only kick out all those gosh darn Republican nutjobs and let in only good sane Democrats and enlightened Europeans? Well see the point of the folder is to discuss different points of view on social, political, cultural, economic, military, and international issues. Some points of view happen to be identified with Republicans, some with Democrats, and some with neither. So it rather sounds as if you're trying to win every argument you could possibly have by default - ban the Republicans, and CE will turn into a wonderland of happiness where the niceness police, as fk teale would say, keep order for you with their candycane batons. Sorry, chuckles, but it's not going to work out that way. You're just going to have to put up with points of view you don't agree with. It's this little something we ignorant Americans like to call "freedom of speech." I'm sure you've progressed beyond that in your far more advanced part of the world, but we're a little slow on this side of the pond - y'know, like you're so fond of saying, we're all a bunch of racist neo-Nazi imperialist lying murdering backwoods hayseed cowboys - so you'll have to forgive us. I'm sure your shining example will lead us to the light soon enough.* Christ, I haven't seen such pompous condescending posturing, such insufferable stuck-up arrogant elitist bullshit since I was at that Senate subcommittee a week ago. You're trying to defeat the entire POINT of the folder by excluding all views but your own? Listen you gibbering idiot, we go to that folder to ARGUE, not to agree with each other before we've even discussed evidence and reason. Another quaint outdated tradition we Americans like to practice is that of debate; that's how our poor backwards little country was FOUNDED. That is how we get to the truth. That is how we test our ideas and that is why that goddamn folder EXISTS. Do you fucking get it yet? *When hell freezes over. Well isn't that special. See, this is precisely why very few people in the CE folder take you seriously. You're completely impervious to argument. It doesn't matter what anyone else says, you're secure in your beliefs and nothing will change them, and if anyone contradicts you using those silly irrelevant things we dumb American yokels call FACTS you just ignore them and stay sitting all nice and snug in your little make-believe world of sugar-biscuits and treacle. You have been told over and over that the French are not a race (despite some attempt to redefine reality by using an online dictionary). You have been told over and over that the post you object to was an obvious joke. You have been told, by me, that I have nothing against individual French people apart from the opinions they might (probably) hold, and disliking someone for holding an opinion you find objectionable is NOT FUCKING RACIST, do you understand any of this yet? Am I getting through to you? Because if I'm a racist and you dislike me for my racist opinions, well you're doing the same thing you're accusing me of doing because you're assuming that I as a rational adult am responsible for my own informed opinions and... you do understand the King's English, right? I mean this isn't a foreign language for you or anything? Do you accept basic logical axioms such as a=a and if a=b then b=a and if a=b and b=c then a=c? Are you still following me? Because if so I'd like your next reply, if there is one (please God forbid), to be something OTHER than a bland restatement of your original assertion which has been PROVED false so very many more times than it deserved to be because anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together should've been able to glance at it for merely two and a half seconds and see that it was not only obviously false but quite frankly downright ridiculous, and I'm so very tired of addressing it and pretending that you actually have some pathetic facsimile of a point somewhere in the midst of that massive pile of reeking festering shit that comprises your posts. Do you understand? Do you? Huh? Do you? Do you? Make Mommy happy and say you do! Do you? Oh, good boy!

Annie Lennox, No More I Love You's "No more I love you's, the language is leaving me No more I love you's, the language is leaving me in silence No more I love you's, changes are shifting outside the words..." Annie Lennox, Walking on Broken Glass "You were the sweetest thing that I ever knew But I don't care for sugar, honey, if I can't have you Since you've abandoned me, my whole life has crashed Won't you pick the pieces up, 'cause it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass... I'm living in an empty room with all the windows smashed And I've got so little left to lose that it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass... And if you're trying to cut me down you know that I might bleed 'Cause if you're trying to cut me down I know that you'll succeed And if you want to hurt me, there's nothing left to fear 'Cause if you want to hurt me you're doing really well, my dear..."

UB40, Red, Red Wine "Red, red wine goes to my head Makes me forget that I still need you so... I'd have sworn that with time, thoughts of you would leave my head I was wrong; now I find just one thing makes me forget Red, red wine, stay close to me; don't let me be alone It's tearing apart my blue, blue heart..."

Yeah, well, I think my wife is leaving me, and I'm practically dead, I haven't eaten or drunk anything (apart from alcohol or cigarettes) in three days or gone to work in five, so I think maybe I might be granted a license to be cheesy. Wet Wet Wet, Love is All Around "So if you really love me, c'mon and let it show You know I love you, I always will My mind's made up by the way that I feel..." Tara McLean, For You "You are all I see, sweet obsession in my soul And would I die for you? Oh, I live for you; you know I do, you know I do... You are all I know, your mouth is all I taste; My breast between your lips, my tongue upon your waist... Would I die for you? I live for you, you know I do..." Loverboy, Heaven in Your Eyes "Now I know what my heart's been looking for... I want to see your love again in your eyes I never want this feeling to end It took some time to find the light, but now I realise I can see the heaven in your eyes..." Alanis Morissette, Head over Feet "Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are - I couldn't help it; it's all your fault... You held your breath and the door for me... You're my best friend..."

Only according to unsubstantiated claims made by Kerry. I'd like him to document his movements for the past two and a half years and prove to all Americans that he never had sex with that woman. We have a right to a full investigation into the character of a man who wants to be our president...

OK, if every damn one of your posts is going to be the same silly sarcasm over and over again, you're going too far. The first time it could be defended. The second time is just trolling.

Not yet, no. But Europe is. Draw your own conclusions. Nicely done. Ignore the arguments, stick a label on their writer, and move on - isn't that what you were accusing other people of doing to you in a different thread? Congratulations, you're a hypocrite. I'm still not comfortable with my position on this issue and I'm reading more about it to see if something changes my mind, or reinforces my current ideas. The two pieces (one a point-counterpoint sort of thing) I've read so far this morning both tend to make me think more favourably of gay marriage. The Power of Marriage by David Brooks Con/Pro essays by Ira L. Shafiroff and Peter Kwan (I think Kwan won that round pretty decisively)

You'd think a teacher would be able to spell "constructive." No, seriously, I didn't bother because I've already had that argument twice now on these boards, and once on another. There's really no point unless I'm talking to people with more education and less emotional investment. Not trying to be pretentious or holier-than-thou at all, honestly, but it serves no purpose to explain the work of some of the most important, influential, and respected researchers in modern psychology (and its founders) - men such as Kraepelin, Bleuler, Breggin, Szasz, and Jung - when the people you're trying to talk to only respond with "I've had clinical depression/schizophrenia/bipolar disorder (Type I? Type II? Cyclothymic? Can any of you even afford a copy of the DSM?) for YEARS, you insensitive BITCH!" What do you say? "None of those exist. You've been lied to and systematically trained for years?" Tried it. Doesn't work. Can't be bothered to keep trying. I'm not a crusader; I don't have the temperament.
-
Doesn't matter. The point is that a marriage between homosexuals does not contribute to society per se; therefore, society should not reward it. Note that I'm talking about the marriage and not the homosexuals themselves.
-
Oh? Well, here's a hint for you, Tom: you can't say that.
-
Yep; just read it myself. Little logic involved - nothing more than a lot of people saying they were offended, and other people agreeing with them. Well whoopdedoo, where's the debate?
