Well, comparing A-Rod to Soriano... A-Rod: .298/.396/.600, .996 OPS, 181 Hits, 98 Singles, 30 Doubles, 6 Triples, 47 HR's, 17 Stolen Bases, 87 Walks, 126 Strikeouts Soriano: .290/.338/.525, .863 OPS, 198 Hits, 119 Singles, 36 Doubles, 5 Triples, 38 HR's, 35 Stolen Bases, 38 Walks, 130 Strikeouts A-Rod is an improvement by: .008 in BA, .058 in OBP, .075 in SLG, .133 OPS, 1 Triple, 9 HR's, 49 Walks, 4 Strikeouts! In the Postseason: A-Rod has a .300/.300/.433 total in the division series in his career and a .340/.367/.566 in the league championship. Soriano has a .241/.281/.333 in division series play, .222/.314/.311 in league championship play and .234/.265/.362 in world series play. IMO, considering what the Yanks made up in this trade by getting A-Rod and losing Soriano, he's not nearly worth that much money in this deal. The fact that 2B is already a somewhat scarce position offensively, the Yanks could've easily traded for somebody like an Adrian Beltre to fill in the gap at 3B without having to give up as much while also keeping their payroll lower then with this trade. The only thing A-Rod does is give them a better bat for the postseason.

Ironically here's the best defensive team that could be fielded last year according to RF. Also the formula for Range Factor if anybody's interested is as follows: (Putouts + Assists) (X 9) / Defensive Innings Played C: Damian Miller(Chicago Cubs) at 9.81 Backup: Paul Lo Duca(Los Angeles Dodgers) at 9.28 1B: Lyle Overbay(Arizona Diamondbacks) at 10.46 Backup: Robert Fick(Atlanta Braves) at 10.38 2B: Orlando Hudson(Toronto Bluejays) at 5.84 Backup: Jeff Reboulet(Pittsburgh Pirates) at 5.56 3B: Jamey Carroll(Montreal Expos) at 3.38 Backup: Eric Chavez(Oakland Athletics) at 3.16 SS: Juan Uribe(Colorado Rockies) at 5.79 Backup: Adam Everett(Houston Astros) at 4.96 LF: Carl Crawford(Tampa Bay Devil Rays) at 2.55 Backup: Garret Anderson(Anaheim Angels) at 2.47 CF: Mike Cameron(Seattle Mariners) at 3.42 Backup: Jeff Duncan(New York Mets) at 3.34 RF: Dustan Mohr(Minnesota Twins) at 2.54 Backup: Jose Cruz Jr.(San Francisco Giants) at 2.39

Horrible, I can't even make out what the hell it says on the back of Jericho's shirt. I like the RVD one but the color is really strange and off putting.
-
Lofton came in at #21 among CF's and Mondesi started in RF for 97 games for the Yankees thus my including him with them.
-
Just did Range Factors for every starting player for all 30 teams. I didn't realize that the loss of Boone will be HUGE for the Yankees defense. He ranked 5th among all major league 3B in range factor. Posada came in at #5 among catchers, Giambi came in at #22 among 1B, Soriano came in at #23 among 2B, Jeter came in at #30 among SS, Matsui came in at #21 among LF, Bernie came in at #14 among CF's and Mondesi came in at #17 among RF's although they went DOWN defensively as Sheffield came in at #20. Another thing that astounded me was how truly good Detroit's defense was in terms of RF with every position placing in the top 10 except catcher(#30), 3B(#25) and CF(#14).

5,785 signatures now *just added mine*

I'd assume they are since they usually sell out their games and make a shit load in TV(along w/the YES Network IIRC)

It may not be fair but as mentioned, numerous teams can spend a hell of a lot more then the 20, 30 & 40 Mill that they choose to. It's the owners who choose to not improve their teams despite getting good revenue from television contracts and money from ticket sales.
-
Most of the owners have proved to be penny pinchers and looking at that Dugout site: Milwaukee, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Cincinnati and Minnesota can all spend a lot more however the owners don't want to see the money that goes to their pockets go towards the team. The only teams that will have $80+ Mill payrolls in 2004 are the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Cubs, Mets and Mariners. There are only 3 other teams in the $70 Mill payroll range, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and St. Louis. That means that only 10 teams will have more then $70 Mill payrolls for the year 2004 which is crazy considering that there are 3 teams under $30 Mill and 3 more between $30-$40 Mill. That means that 6 teams are spending half as much as the top 10 teams despite having satisfactory income and revenue.

Gotta agree that the cap is a bad idea, hell many Patriots players would need to slash money to just stay with the team because of the cap. If that happened in baseball you'd no longer see the Cal Ripken Jr.'s and Tony Gwynn's sticking with one team which is what IMO makes baseball so great, that players can be identified with being loyal to one team.
-
What I don't get is why do this trade in terms of the Rangers end? Mike Young was 15th in Range Factor among 2B, a full 8 places higher then Alfonso Soriano and thus is better defensively. Granted, Soriano is better offensively but is losing the defense worth it? A-Rod finished 14th among SS in RF so who would replace him at SS?
-
Soriano was indeed horrible in the field, ranked 23rd in the majors in RF among 2B
-
Yeah, OOTP 5's a baseball simulator though. You can DL the demo at http://www.ootp5.com
-
Still though, the guy has only played 2B once in his career and that was in 2002. If you have a guy like Cairo with a 4.65 RF and a career .982 FP, why not use him? The guy can be a decent roleplayer in the lineup as the Yanks certainly don't need more firepower. Also Lamb has a career 2.55 RF so wouldn't you want Cairo instead? Or does it go from 10-1(1 being the best)?
-
Comparing Miguel Cairo to Alfonso Soriano in terms of 2B fielding. Cairo: .982% in 465 games with 39 errors, 4.65 RF Soriano: .972% in 467 games with 62 errors, 4.55 RF If anything, at the very least the Yanks could improve at 2B defensively though the offensive production wouldn't even be close.
-
Hey Al, is there a site that has the full formula for Win Shares? I've reserved the book at my library from another one however I'm not sure when it'll arrive so I was just curious since I've wanted to try this for older teams/players.
-
Yeah, that's a fairly low fielding %, esp. for a 3B. Although Wilson has only 3 errors in 96 games as a 2B and Cairo has 39 errors in 465 games so both are better options at 2B then Mike Lamb of all people. Let Lamb backup A-Rod(assuming A-Rod does shift to 3B) and leave Jeter at SS. Jeter has a respectable .973 fielding % as a SS in 1,209 games, and while he has 132 errors if you look at the numbers, A-Rod is almost exactly similar. 1,267 games at SS, 131 errors and a .977 fielding %.
-
Meh...just irks me that the Yanks can go over so much and pay what to them amounts to child's play money
-
Lamb has a career .914 fielding % at 3B in 224 games. He's only played 2B once. Enrique Wilson has a career .990 fielding % at 2B in 96 games, and Cairo has a .982 fielding % at 2B in 465 games. I'd personally stick Cairo there and use Wilson as the backup at 2B. Last Year's fielding %'s Cairo: .986 in 40 games at 2B Wilson: 1.000 in only 10 games at 2B Lamb: Didn't play 2B at all last year, only played 2B once in 2002 and has predominantly been a 3B in his career.

Not necassarily AS, they still need help in the pitching department and if they don't manage to sign Maddux then who would they turn to?
-
...fucking hell, so the MLBPA wouldn't let a trade that everybody agreed to go through because it wouldn't be in the best interest of a player salary wise who wanted the deal done yet they let him go to a team that is already over the salary cap just because his salary won't be restructured? And this feud now reaches levels that hatred has never seen before...
-
...FUCK STEINBRENNER AND THE YANKEES! Oh well, now they have a hole at 2B and SP(Assuming they traded Soriano and Contreras)
