    BATMAN news in Variety

I'm already marking for a lot of this stuff and as the news keeps coming, I'm growing more anticipated for the movie however knowing the WB, I won't start thinking that everything is perfect and that nothing can go wrong here just because the current news is great and there's no mention of the WB at all.

Sure they put together a hell of a team but they can also tamper with the movie and screw it up in some way too

Gotta agree with everybody else, script & Nolan sound great but knowing the history of WB and their fucking with movies, I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

The official off season NFL thread

Credit Rotoworld.com and the corresponding newspapers The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots signed reserve fullback Philip Crosby and 11 other players today for NFL Europe and training camp consideration. Crosby was with the Bills before landing on the injured reserve last season. Other Pats signees: offensive tackle Jack Fadule, linebacker Justin Kurpeikis, running backs Malaefou Mackenzi and Frank Moreau, wide receiver Marquise Walker, defensive back Scott Farley, linebacker Lawrence Flugence, defensive backs Jason Perry and Mike Hall, offensive tackle David Pruce and defensive lineman Buck Rasmussen. The Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Todd Husak and seven other players today, most of whom will go to NFL Europe. Other signees: wide receivers Richard Alston and Hugh Smith, defensive linemen Corey Jackson and Cedric Scott, running back Joffrey Reynolds, defensive back Ricky Sharpe and David Young. Reynolds was with Green Bay earlier this season. Nothing too promising in this group. Vikings owner Red McCombs says defensive tackle Chris Hovan will not get a contract extension this offseason. Hovan took a step back this year. He certainly gets more publicity than most defensive tackles who don't make the Pro Bowl. He also is the worst guest host ever of the NFL Network's Total Access show. Hovan asked Hall of Fame inductee Carl Eller if guys back in the day used to play with a "kick-ass" attitude. Eller said yes and Hovan said that's good, because he loves a "kick-ass" attitude. Clinton Portis denied the Denver Post's report a day earlier that he is considering holding out. Portis would like to get a deal done, but stepped back from any threats to sit out training camp. He told the NFL netowork and the Rocky Mountain News that he, "Never said that I wasn't coming to camp if my contract didn't get redone...I slapped my name on the dotted line. So I've got four years." For what it's worth, Portis sounded genuine in interviews that he wouldn't hold out. Comments: Isn't Walker like 6'2" or so? He could be decent as a David Patten type role player. I'm not surprised Hovan got axed as he was very subpar in the season despite the publicity he got. Also when it comes to Portis, I'll believe it when I see it.

3 5 2 6 4 1 7 Seasons 3 and 5 alternate depending on the mood. Sadly I think I'll end up hating Season 7, despite liking the other seasons, for Kennedy alone as well as the other SIT's suddenly gaining slayer powers, Caleb getting killed like he was nothing, etc.

Well, looks like things are already taking place. Credit to Rotoworld.com Patriots quarterbacks coach John Hufnagel was named the Giants' offensive coordinator today. Hufnagel served as an assistant under new Giants coach Tom Coughlin in 2002 with the Jaguars. "John has earned his stripes," Coughlin said. "He is prepared to accept this responsibility. He is an outstanding leader, and he will be very good on game day." Cardinals released quarterback Jeff Blake. The Cardinals terminated the final two years on the three-year, $7.5 million contract Blake signed last March. "Josh McCown is our starting quarterback, so we felt it is in Jeff's best interests to release him now to give him the opportunity to catch on with another team," new Cardinals coach Dennis Green said. After a disappointing season in Arizona, Blake doesn't figure to be considered for anything more than a backup job in 2004. Comments: Hufnagel has helped Brady improve though a lot of credit also goes to Charlie Weiss. Considering that the Pats have basically had only 2 QB's for the past decade, I don't know how good Hufnagel is however he should help out the inconsistent Giants offense from last year or at the very least, help play to Collins' strengths. I don't see why the Cardinals wouldn't keep Blake as a backup but I guess it was more of a monetary situation then anything else which is unfortunate since with a more capable receiving corp he could be a decent player when entering the game.

Credit to Rotoworld.com & the newspapers It's no longer a given that the Pirates will bring back Randall Simon. They're again talking to Travis Lee. Lee would be the better option for the starting job at first base. He had been discussing a deal with the Cardinals, but it appears that St. Louis will stick to its original plan of putting Albert Pujols at first. If the Pirates pick Lee, Simon will probably end up as a bench player somewhere. Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Red Sox signed designated hitter Ellis Burks, who had been with the Indians, to a one-year, $750,000 contract. It's actually closer to a $1 million contract. Burks would get $125,000 bonuses each for 30 and 60 days on the active 25-man roster. He also would get $50,000 for 300 plate appearances, $100,000 each for 350, 400 and 450 plate appearances, and $150,000 for 500 plate appearances. This is a great signing by the Red Sox and should give the team one the game's strongest benches. Kevin Millar is going to have to be careful not to go any lengthy slumps with Burks available to be the full-time DH if needed. Mets signed RHP Scott Erickson to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. In choosing Shea Stadium, Erickson picked a good place to make his comeback. Still, he looks like a terrible bet for this year. He hasn't been a solid pitcher since 1998 or even a healthy one since 1999. At best, he'll be a below average innings-eater as the Mets' fifth starter. Comments: Lee has always been decent if unspectacular but is a better player then Simon. I like the idea of Burks returning as a bat off the bench, hit .301 in 138 games 2 years ago at 37. Erickson's a fairly subpar player, giving up a fair share of HR's as well as posting a very poor BB/K ratio and has a career 4.51 ERA. Even if he were to become the Mets 5th Starter, they'd be better off signing somebody else or trading for a better pitcher.

Guthrie increased his IP and GP with each month. He had a 1.95 ERA in August in 15 GP, 9 IP giving up 3 runs and a 2.38 ERA in September in 9 games, 7.2 IP and giving up 5 runs. Granted he wasn't fabulous in September but he improved as the season wore along(1.95 ERA in August compared to a 3.11 ERA in June). Considering his age and the fact that he only hit sub-2 ERA's twice prior to 2003 and 2002, he did pretty well for the Cubs. Also he's never pitched more then 73 IP since 1996 and career wise has always been in the 40-60 IP range. He did bad in the postseason which looks to be an off performance given his previous postseason track record(only 1 HR in 4 prior postseason appearances(12 games), 2 runs in 10.4 IP and a 2.03 ERA)

Credit www.rotoworld.com & the Boston Herald & the Beaver County Times A deal isn't done yet, but free agent Ellis Burks flew into Boston yesterday and is expected to undergo a physical today or tomorrow. Agent Jim Turner said that another team unexpectedly entered the Burks' derby last Friday. Although Burks wants to play for the Red Sox, he still could decide to head elsewhere. Devil Rays signed RHP Doug Waechter, RHP Jesus Colome, RHP Carlos Hines, RHP Jason Standridge, RHP Alec Zumwalt and LHP Mark Hendrickson to one-year contracts. All are getting deals at or near the minimum. Waechter and Hendrickson are two top candidates for spots at the back of the Tampa Bay rotation, and Waechter, in particular, is a bit of a sleeper. Colome will have a spot in the bullpen, although whether he'll pitch in middle relief or help Lance Carter in a setup role will be determined by his spring performance. Zumwalt, taken from the Braves in the Rule 5 draft, will probably need a very good spring to make the team following the signings of Todd Jones and Mike Williams. Standridge seems to have turned into an afterthought. He and Hines likely will open the season at Triple-A Durham. The Pirates appear set to sign free agents Randall Simon and Mark Guthrie this week. Simon is a quality bench player, but the Pirates are probably going to give him too much playing time again. Even though he'll probably play better than he did for the team last year (.274/.305/.417 in 307 AB), it's still a bad idea for GM Dave Littlefield to bring him back. Comments: I like the thought of Burk coming back. He's been solid for us in the past and could certainly give the outfield some depth on the bench. Simon can be a good player given the right situation. Guthrie could be a good signing if he keeps up his current success. Past 2 seasons with the Cubs and Mets(2003 & 2002), he's yielded sub 3.00 ERA's.
