    The NFL All-Time Draft.

Count me in for this thing. I'd also vote for the challenge of selecting individual linemen.

    - WR Peter Warrick and QB Ricky Santos both signed with CFL's Montreal Alouettes. - Patriots LB Victor Hobson has been studying the team's play book since signing as a free agent a few weeks ago, specifically the role of inside linebacker, where he will play in the team's 3-4 system. - Cleveland Browns starting QB Derek Anderson is working on improving some of his throwing mechanics. With the help of QB coach Rip Scherer, Anderson hopes to eclipse the marks he set during his Pro-Bowl caliber 2008 season. "The two major things with him are opening up his hips and throwing to his left, and not changing his arm slot when he throws underneath throws," Scherer said of the 6-foot-6 Anderson. "Release the ball at the same level, just take a little speed off of it. Every day after practice he stays with me and works on those things." - The Atlanta Falcons announced on Friday that they have waived S D.J. Wolfe.

More news... - A source close to the situation confirmed that the Philadelphia Eagles have dismissed vice president of player personnel Jason Licht. Licht's departure has not been announced, but it was reported in yesterday's Trenton Times. A team spokesman said the Eagles had no comment on the matter. Word around the organization is that Licht had a falling-out with vice president of football administration Howie Roseman, the protege of team president Joe Banner. Apparently, Licht was told earlier in the offseason to seek other employment, that his job would end with last month's NFL draft. - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in free agents wide receiver Eric Moulds and wide receiver Bryan Gilmore for a visit on Monday. No word is available as to whether the team plans to offer either player a contract. - Free agent tight end Erron Kinney has formally retired from professional football. - The Green Bay Packers announced on Thursday that wide receiver Bill Schroeder has announced his retirement from professional football. - Free agent WR Eddie Kennison worked out with the Buccaneers on Monday and the 13-year veteran singled out the team on his short list. "Tampa Bay is one of the clubs we're talking to right now. It is the only one he agreed to visit," Kennison's agent John Hamilton said. "I think he would really love to play for Coach Jon Gruden." Kennison's 2007 season was derailed by a torn hamstring that limited him to 13 receptions.

More Rotoworld news... Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. has lost his nickel back job to Danieal Manning. Next, he might lose his roster spot. Manning Jr., who's due $1.95 million in 2008, is coming off a poor season in which he had no interceptions. The Bears can go with cheaper options in sub-packages this season. Bears OT John Tait has moved to right tackle. Tait is a stronger run blocker than pass protector, so the Bears' offense should benefit from this. John St. Clair worked at left tackle during Wednesday's OTA, but rookie Chris Williams will be in there before long. Other news... Kansas City Chiefs signed Oregon State RB Dantrell Savage to a 2 year contract. http://www.titansonline.com/news/titans_ne....php?PRKey=5758 NASHVILLE, TN, May 21, 2008 — To enhance the development of elite football talent from around the world, NFL clubs have agreed to expand the league’s International Practice Squad Program. The action was taken at the NFL Spring Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on May 20. The initiative, which enters its fifth year in 2008, will for the first time feature 16 players joining the practice squads of NFL teams. The players will be selected and assigned to teams in the AFC North, AFC West, NFC South and NFC West in time for training camp. Participating players will be announced in mid-July. Since the program’s inception in 2004, 22 players have participated, including 11 last year and nine that have participated twice.

The Cowboys turned Romo's $6.5 million base salary into a signing bonus, lowering his cap number from $8.416 million to $3.5 million. Raiders released DE/OLB Akbar Gbaja-Biamila. I like the sounds of this, but I'll wait and see before I pass any judgment here. Still too early. Compared to who? Trent Green? Jon Kitna? Kurt Warner? Marc Bulger? Look at those stellar careers. Mike Martz is a terrible, horrible, awful coach. His one superbowl win as an OC was his first year on the job. How much can he even be credited for that? Look at that divisional playoff game against Carolina a few seasons ago where he plays for the tie and OT in the red zone. Yeesh. The Lions totally collapsed last year, too. Congratulations Alex Smith, you're next in line to be the mediocre Martz QB with a career ended by injury. In 6 years he went 53-32. He made the playoffs 4 times and went 3-4 including making it to the 2001 Super Bowl. As far as "mediocre" goes... Here are the stats under his watch. Kurt Warner: 1117/1677 (66.6%) with 14,408 yards (8.59) and 102 TD vs. 65 INT. Sacks = 114 (6.8% of PA) Trent Green: 145/240 (60.4%) with 2,063 yards (8.60) and 16 TD vs. 5 INT. Sacks = 24 (10% of PA) Marc Bulger: 934/1446 (64.6%) with 11,283 (7.80) and 67 TD vs. 49 INT. Sacks = 90 (6.2% of PA) Jon Kitna: 727/1157 (62.8%) with 8276 (7.15) and 39 TD vs. 42 INT. Sacks = 114 (9.86% of PA) Say what you will about the hits his QB takes, but they always have success under him. Every one and their mother could've told you that a 34 year old Kitna was not the greatest fit for his style of offense. He could scramble but made poor decisions and held the ball too long. Alex Smith can scramble well (3.9 YPC including a 6.8 last year on 13 carries) and under the right OC, could be a success. Smith has never had much to work with offensively as his best season came in 2006 when he had as weapons: RB Frank Gore, WR Antonio Bryant, WR Arnaz Battle, and TE Vernon Davis. This year: RB Frank Gore, WR Isaac Bruce, WR Arnaz Battle, WR Bryant Johnson, and TE Vernon Davis. Not a massive improvement but Bruce knows Mike Martz's system and Bryant Johnson will be an underrated slot receiver. I also put the blame of the Lions failure squarely on Rod Marinelli. He's the head coach for a reason and if he wanted to run more, he should've forced that upon Martz. Instead, he let Martz run his position and as a result didn't allow enough balance. From Weeks 7-9 they had 100+ yards rushing, then had -18 and 25 in the next 2 games. Where was Marinelli in all of this? He's the head coach and the overriding figure...

Atlanta also signed WR Tony Gonzalez. An interesting move because he was Matt Ryan's teammate at BC so there should be some comfort level there between the two. Ran a 4.49 40 according to NFL Draft Scout and won the Coaches' Award at BC in 2006, "12/04/06 - Coaches' Award, given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game; a performer whose style of play reflects what has been taught and sometimes what simply cannot be taught; this is a person with great football instincts: Tony Gonzalez." 2006: 43 catches, 491 yards, 5 TD. 2005: 28 catches, 414 yards, 5 TD. 2004: 11 catches, 147 yards, 1 TD. 2003: 7 catches, 135 yards, 1 TD. 2002: Redshirt Total: 89 catches, 1187 yards, and 12 TD.

Some interesting notes from Pro Football Weekly's "Whispers" article from the past three weeks... 1: The early skinny on Bears undrafted rookie QBs Nick Hill and Caleb Hanie after the team’s rookie minicamp was that Hanie clearly had a stronger arm but that Hill appeared to be a better athlete. 2: We hear whoever ends up looking better between Bears undrafted rookie QBs Nick Hill (Southern Illinois) and Caleb Hanie (Colorado State) has an excellent shot of becoming the team’s No. 3 QB, with the other signalcaller landing on the practice squad — unless the Bears suddenly decide to go after one of the many quarterbacks the Buccaneers seem to have at their disposal. 3: Word from Ravens minicamp is that second-year QB Troy Smith looks improved from a season ago. However, we hear he still has an uphill battle in the competition for the starting job. Veteran Kyle Boller is believed to hold a slight edge over first-round pick Joe Flacco and Smith. 4: We hear the Falcons are preparing their defense to play a lot of nickel coverage this year, in part because of the lack of faith they have in the defensive line’s ability to pressure the quarterback. 5: We keep hearing that the more Niners offensive coordinator Mike Martz works with QB Alex Smith, the more excited he gets. Martz apparently has told some of his confidantes that Smith could be the best quarterback he’s worked with on the pro level.

    The Poulan Weedeater Offseason Bowl

Yet another interesting story because Texas Southern went 0-11 last year... yeah, no wins. The two years before they went 3-8 and 1-10. Smart choice, Bobby... Reid could start at QB although he may battle Tino Edgecombe for time (10 TD vs. 13 INT and will be a Sr.) but honestly, he really will struggle on the NFL Draft radar regardless if he started simply because his team won't be any good and has no offensive help around him. He has good size and speed (NFL Draft Scout has him between a 4.63 and 4.76) but he transferred due to getting injured and losing his job and transferred to a shitty program. If he has a great season, he could be a Round 6/7 type pick but Rhett Bomar didn't exactly light up the world and he'll have another year to start and improve his stock. I actually think I-AA will be really interesting this year with the following players starting or possibly starting: Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston State), Bobby Reid (Texas Southern), and Ryan Perriloux (Jacksonville State). This along with top QBs like Liam Coen (Mass), Bryant Lee (Southern), and Cole Bergquist (Montana) being other quarterbacks on the possible NFL Draft radar. TSU does have a new head coach in Johnnie Cole (SIAC HC of the year in 2006, HC of Lane College) but I don't think they'll win more than 4-5 games on the year.

Just saw on NFL Network that Perrilloux will transfer to Jacksonville State. They've gone 6-5 the past 3 seasons under coach Jack Crowe. Sounds like he could start and play this season right away, which should be interesting. http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content....&CID=807896

If the Bears were real smart they'd scour the CFL... still tons of free agent big names like: Eric Crouch, Kliff Kingsbury, Mike McMahon, and Akili Smith(!). They also have that Chris Leak fella that they let go. Come to think of it, Chicago could have a 4 QB roster of college all-stars to mix and match if they decided to go that route.

I've also seen Sarah Jayne Dunn's name attached too (as in the Wiki entry). She's a little taller (by 2-3 inches) but also seems to be slightly older so she could make for a more "recognizable" Dr. Harleen Quinnzell in the film. IMDB also has her listed. http://www.rdfmanagement.com/clients/Sarah...ne_Dunn_cv.html

May 3rd article written by Larry Mayer. LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Less than ideal conditions didn’t prevent quarterbacks Caleb Hanie of Colorado State and Nick Hill of Southern Illinois from making some impressive throws Saturday during the Bears’ rookie minicamp. Coach Lovie Smith praised the undrafted free agents after both put zip on their passes and generally threw with accuracy despite light rain, gusty winds and temperatures in the 40s. Undrafted free agent Caleb Hanie chose to sign with the Bears over the Cowboys because he felt he had a better opportunity in Chicago. “I thought the quarterbacks threw the ball better,” Smith said. "Both have a fairly good arm for young guys coming in. Both have played at a pretty high level. Both have good leadership ability and all that, and this is a great opportunity for them.” With only Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton ahead of them on the depth chart, Hanie and Hill are expected to battle for the third and final spot on the 53-man roster. The Bears could also pick up a quarterback who's released by another team. “We have two quarterbacks on our roster right now, so there’s a good chance one of them will be our third quarterback,” Smith said. “There’s an opportunity and they seem like they’re going to make the most of it.” On Saturday, Hanie hit undrafted free agent receiver James Townsend of Rutgers in the right flat and on a slant and also connected with tight ends Kellen Davis, a fifth-round pick from Michigan State, and North Carolina State's Marcus Stone, who's participating in minicamp on a tryout basis. Hill completed passes to wide receivers Earl Bennett, a third-round pick from Vanderbilt, and Marcus Monk, a seventh-round selection from Arkansas. Townsend and Davis also caught passes from Hill. Hanie and Hill didn’t arrive in Chicago by accident. Both made pre-draft visits to Halas Hall, and the Bears kept in contact with them for several weeks leading up to the draft, recruiting them to sign as free agents if they didn’t get selected. Hanie was also pursued by the Dallas Cowboys, the team he rooted for while growing up in Texas. But the 6-2, 236-pounder felt the chance to earn a job was much better in Chicago. “It’s a great opportunity, one because you just have a NFL shot, and two, we’ve got a good chance here with just two quarterbacks on the roster,” Hanie said. “It was good that I had the opportunity to choose where I wanted to go and had a couple options, so it was nice in that area. Obviously you’d like to have your name called. But just being able to pick and choose the place that you wanted to go was a good thing for me.” As a senior at Colorado State last season, Hanie completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 2,455 yards with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Hanie boasts a strong arm and a quick release but often forced passes into coverage. Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. is high on Hanie, predicting that he will be the Bears' third quarterback this season and eventually start. Hanie feels that he’s well-suited to operate the Bears offense. Nick Hill completed 71.5 percent of his passes last season at Southern Illinois. “I think I’ll fit in real well with it because it’s a lot of straight drop-back and play-action passes, and I ran a lot of that in college,” he said. “You also get in the shotgun a little bit, and I did some of that in college too. I think I’m pretty well-versed in both areas. "I like the offense a lot. It makes sense to me. I’ve picked it up pretty quick so far and I imagine that I can keep picking it up and moving on.” A big Bears fan while growing up in southern Illinois, Hill no doubt took a quick glance or two at himself in a mirror before heading out to practice at the start of minicamp Friday. “It’s exciting,” Hill said. “It’s a dream come true. If we wanted to stay out here for five hours and practice, I’m willing to do that. Just putting on this helmet and practice jersey is an honor. I feel very fortunate to be here.” Last season at Southern Illinois, Hill completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 3,175 yards with 28 TDs and 7 interceptions. The 6-3, 210-pound lefty also feels comfortable with the Bears offense, something that was evident Friday and Saturday. “He looked smooth,” said offensive coordinator Ron Turner. “We sent him some stuff earlier in the week and it was evident that he studied it, that he got into the playbook a little bit. He had a pretty good grasp of stuff and looked good.” For the immediate future, the Bears' playbook will be Hill's constant companion. "You’ve just got to get in there and know it front and back," he said. "You’ve got to know everything in that thing and then you can go to the line and feel confident and the game starts to slow down a little bit once you know what you’re doing. "The next three or four months, this is all I’m going to do. Every night [i'll] study the playbook because I know it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I have. I’ve got to come out here and show the coaches that they can feel confident and throw me out there in a game.”
