    This Week in Baseball 3/30 - 4/6

Watching the game and nice to see Everett see 6 pitches and still line into a double play. Although I have to admit... Gomez is somewhat worth watching by himself.

Been struggling as of late, largely due to injuries. I made a couple pick ups to help my pitching in MR Jeff Dedmon (2.98 ERA in RL in 99.2 IP) and SP Shane Rawley (S8 endurance and had a 3.54 ERA in RL.

Just grabbed the following (Mile High Comics has a FREECOMICS! discount code in which you get $10 off). My whole purchase cost me $11.74 with shipping compared to a probable $20+. - The Batman Strikes! #41 and #43 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer #10 - #12

Hard to say that it's a good album in terms of cohesion. I'm not a fan of most of the songs outside of "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" and "All Apologies" but then again "Lounge Act" is my favorite song of theirs. I really dislike "Dumb" and "Heart Shaped Box" and most of the other songs are forgettable in terms of memorable hooks in comparison to Nevermind.

I have the league's worst WHIP and 3rd worst ERA but my offense is totally kicking ass and dominating. I also got my first sweep of the season. I'm the only team over .500 with a negative RS vs. RA ratio...

Emil's blunder was a real dagger... hit a perfectly acceptable double that would've had a runner on 2nd with 1 out and the A's down 6-5 but overran the base heading to third when the throw was coming home (cut off by the pitcher) and got tagged out in the pickle. What hurt even more was that it was now 6-5 with 0 on and 2 outs and the next two hitters both hit singles (which may/may not have happened with Brown on second but it's more a salt in the wound kind of thing).

Huston blows the save and we're actually entering extra innings at 4-4 thanks in part to a Brandon Moss solo HR.

That's partly why I try and shy away from prospects unless I know for a fact they have a starting job sewn up/chance at starting the season (i.e. Mark Reynolds, Daric Barton) or they're taken in the final 2-4 rounds where cutting them for a better shot at winning this year won't hurt as much.

Catching this with Remy on NESN. Matsuzaka gets out of the 3rd on a leap catch at SS for the 3rd out but Remy mentioned he has 5 walks already. Not a good thing to see.

Despite losing 2 of 3 in the series, that was a fun 3 game series. All 3 games came down to either the 9th inning or extra innings and my club scored 19 runs while getting 40 hits. My team is the very definition of an "all offense/no defense" team... out slug me and you'll probably win but the odds of playing a 3-2 or 2-1 game against me are fairly low. I've been held to 2 runs or less only 4 times (19.0%) and scored 6 runs or more in 7 games (33.3%). I also lead the league in RS and RA Despite having the 9th fewest HR, I'm 2nd in BB and 3rd with a team OPS of .757.

I tried to look at last year's league but couldn't glean anything in terms of the "manager last check in on X date" because there was nothing there. I also don't want to go by moves made because managers who played the whole year could make few moves. I know this can be the case in Rotisserie leagues where the Top 6-7 spots can be decided by the All-Star Break but not sure on the H2H front. As for the issue of not wanting to tamper with the lineup daily... you could set the lineup as if for a weekly and then just ignore it for the week as well. This way, if a player does get injured on a Tuesday, you have enough time to bench him without getting a 0 for the rest of the week in that spot. Just because it says daily change doesn't mean that as manager you'd "have" to change the lineup every day.

Question... with the weekly lineup settings, how's the first week going to be scored (i.e. Boston vs. Oakland)? Say I have Papelbon going... will I net a 0 for the pitching stats? And because I'm a moron (and didn't see this earlier)... I'm making the argument to change weekly lineups to daily lineups next season since this season is too late to change.

Another interesting article on Manny Acta. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...8032202523.html "In a nutshell," Tolman said, "it's: Don't give away outs." That might sound simple enough, yet staggering to Acta is the number of managers and players and teams who don't adhere to that philosophy. Frank Robinson -- Acta's predecessor as Nationals manager, a Hall of Famer for whom Acta holds enormous respect -- all but ran the Nationals ragged in his two years in Washington. Robinson often talked about managing by feel, by what he had learned over 50 years in the game. Acta, too, has instincts. They do not, however, completely control his strategy. "I'm not the biggest stolen base fan in the world," Acta said. So in his first season, he adjusted the Nationals' approach. The club went from attempting 185 steals in Robinson's final year to almost exactly half that (92) in Acta's first season. Zimmerman ran only five times, reaching safely four of them. And Washington's percentage rose from 66.5 percent in 2006 to 75 percent last year. The Nationals were caught 23 times -- fewest in baseball. Like most managers, Acta said he took ideas from every manager with whom he has worked. But he is also an avid reader, both of inspirational books on leadership and of baseball. If he has a baseball bible, it just might be "Mind Game," the book on the 2004 Boston Red Sox produced by the staff of Baseball Prospectus, a group of some of the leading statistical analysts in the game. "If it's been proven to me that a guy from first has a better chance to score if you let the guy swing the bat than a guy from second with one out [as would result from a sacrifice bunt] -- and there's a decent hitter at the plate -- then why keep doing it?" Acta said earlier this spring. Robinson would frequently bunt in early innings. Acta never does. "I bunt the top two guys in the lineup, and I bunt the bottom two guys in the lineup," Acta said. "But the guys that are in the middle of the lineup are there to drive in runs. That's just my philosophy. That's what I do. I do believe in bunting guys from first and second to second and third. I do that -- but again, with what I consider are my bunting guys." So when the season begins, and the Nationals find themselves with no outs and a runner on first, wait for a hard, low liner to be hit. If the liner is caught, and the runner has already stepped toward second, he could be an easy mark for a double play. But if he handles it as he was taught on a sunny morning in mid-March, he should be leaning back toward the base. The reward of advancing an extra base, in Acta's mind, is not worth the risk of being doubled up, killing a potential rally. "We want to try to see if we're the only team that wouldn't do it once," Acta said. If the Nationals succeed, it will be a small achievement that fits into a larger philosophy, one that is being stamped on a team by its manager.

Some interesting news regarding Eric Hinske. He's bounced around a bit since winning ROY in 2002. http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/ra...ticle427627.ece Hinske, 30, signed a minor-league contract last month and was thought be positioning himself to compete for a utility spot (having experience at both corner infield and outfield positions). Hinske, who started in leftfield and rightfield the past two games, has worked with coach George Hendrick all spring and hasn't "done anything bad" in his more than 30 innings in the outfield, Maddon said. But when it comes to competing with fellow nonroster invitees John Rodriguez and Jon Weber, it's Hinske's left-handed bat that could make the difference. Maddon said Hinske may not be the fastest of the three, but the manager indicated earlier this week that he would "probably in a sense be willing to accept something a little bit less defensively if we're going to get possibly a lot more offense." And just for Marvin (and Tony) http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/basebal...story?track=rss Orioles manager Dave Trembley said yesterday that first baseman Kevin Millar will likely be his cleanup batter, hitting behind Nick Markakis and ahead of designated hitter Aubrey Huff. Barring any trades, Brian Roberts is expected to hit leadoff and Melvin Mora will be in the No. 2 hole. "If I had to write out the lineup tomorrow, Millar would be the cleanup hitter to start the season," Trembley said. "That doesn't mean he'll stay there, but to start the season, that's what I'll probably do. I think he sees a lot of pitches. I think he always comes up with one very good at-bat during the game. He's a good two-strike hitter and he's a good two-out RBI guy. I'm going to sandwich him between two left-handed hitters." "The guy I want to protect is Jones," Trembley said. "I could see Jones hitting up in the order against left-handed pitching and maybe down further against right-handed pitching. I think Ramon might be able to protect Jones somewhat. I still think Ramon is going to have a big year."

The 1-2-3 finish of the Cubs/Giants/Pirates. The NYG being the only NL team to post an ERA+ and OPS+ above 110. The underappreciated Red Murray (St. Louis).

  21. Golberg vs. Raven (Goldberg wins US Title). The first real moment where you knew the next step was the WCW Title. It's also a fun little match. Could be a DVD Bonus Match building up to the Goldberg/Hogan match. Also the Raven/DDP series, again helped vault DDP into the WCW Title picture later.

I like how the effective use of platooning has helped my team take advantage offensively... Chili Davis (4R): Hitting .333/.367/.556 in 27 AB. Gary Matthews (4L): Hitting .294/.455/.412 in 17 AB. Chris Brown (1R): Hitting .320/.393/.440 in 25 AB. Ron Cey (4L): .316/.381/.737 in 19 AB. Alvin Davis (3R): .385/.448/.500 in 26 AB.

For those in need of SP/Pitching help, Orlando Hernandez is on the trading block. He'd also only cost a 17th round pick for you next year if kept I think but don't hold me to that. I'm mainly looking at relievers but will take a hitter as well. I figure I can ride out a rotation of Zambrano/Sabathia/Randy Johnson/Petit a week.

RHR's pick... This album for me is like watching Len Bias highlights. It's not perfect, it's rough, maybe too shiny in places. But, the promise shown is amazing. And I love all of the songs....with "Last Goodbye" being one of my favorite drinkin' songs... My next pick is JEFF BUCKLEY'S GRACE.
