Jeremy Bloom rips the NCAA a new one...

did you miss this part NL? So I took their advice and dropped all my legitimate ski-related sponsors and enrolled at the University of Colorado, where I became a proud member of the football program and the social science department.

    The Keltner List

I think he should be in despite the fact that he fell so sharply. His peak from 1929-1932 yielded an average ERA+ of 131 and he also had a 135+ in 1935 and 1936 he had a 128+. on Baseball-Prospectus, the average for the DERA(Defense Adjusted ERA) is 4.50. His peak seasons of 29-32, adjusted for all-time, has him at 3.43, 3.26, 3.67 and 3.63. 1935 had him at 3.46 and 1936 he was at 3.73. He was also at least 10 runs better then a replacement player in 4 seasons hitting wise with it peaking in 1935 when he was 13.8 runs better.

    AL Cy Young

Johan Santana: 181 IP, 132 HA, 63 ER, 207 K:46 BB(4.5:1), 3.13 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, .202 OBA Mark Mulder: 191 IP, 169 HA, 79 ER, 121 K:64 BB(1.89:1), 3.72 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, .243 OBA. Johan Santana clearly deserves the Cy Young unless you just look at records however if Santana keeps his streak going he could also reach 20+ wins. He trumps Mulder in every category whilst throwing 10 less innings as well.

As of 8/23, Adrian Beltre was tied for 9th place with JD Drew in NL Win Shares so I think there's a few more deserving players of the MVP.

What if the A's had kept their free agents?

Hey Al, is there anyway to see how they compare using their average win shares? I think it'd be a bit fairer as Jason Giambi is currently injured otherwise he'd likely be in the teens WS wise which would put them up around 120-122 total.

Want to know how easy it is to put together a competitive ballclub for less then $25 Million? It's a 25 man roster and I manage to save $4 Million on top of that. Dave Roberts needs more at-bats. Terry Francona is oblivious to the word "consistent" in terms of his lineups. I think there's only been one or two times the whole season where he had the same lineup set as the game before.

I'm not saying a speedy runner in itsself is bad but more that the amount of steals a speedy runner seemingly "demands" from managers is more harmful for the most part then it is helpful.

    Moneyball

A guy steals 50 bases(out of 70 chances) means that the guy who ran cost his team 20 outs over the span of 162 games by getting thrown out by the catcher. Each time he attempts a steal, he raises the chances of giving his opponent a free out. Couple that with the fact that it's rare for players to steal 40+ bases with a better then 80% success rate and it's not all that it's cracked up to be. To me, it's the same as a strikeout when a runner gets thrown out at second base. Instead of having a runner on 1st with 0 outs, you now have likely your #2/#3 up with nobody on and 1 out which lowers the odds of scoring a run.

For the Marlins, keep in mind that Juan Pierre had a .378 OBP during the playoffs too which helped them get the speed necessary to score runs and win the ballgames. Jeff Conine also had a .437 OBP and Ivan Rodriguez had a .390 OBP. Jeff Conine also managed to hit .367, Rodriguez hit .313 and Pierre hit .301. Without Carl Pavano and Josh Beckett pitching lights out, they may not have even reached the World Series. In the WS: Looking at the stats, it's amazing that the Marlins managed to win due to their piss poor hitting(not just OBP and SLG but BA as well). Juan Pierre was a stud with a .333/.481/.429 line and Jeff Conine had a .333/.417/.381 line. Brad Penny and Josh Beckett basically carried the Marlins on their back to a WS victory. Anaheim in the 2001 playoffs also had three guys put up great OBP's. Scott Speizio had a .424 OBP, Troy Glaus had a .420 OBP(and .770 SLG) and Tim Salmon had a .382 OBP. Also didn't hurt that Darin Erstad hit .352 and Adam Kennedy hit .340. In the WS: Speizio had a .400 OBP, Glaus had a .385/.467/.846 line, David Eckstein hit .310, Darin Erstad hit .300 and Tim Salmon had a .346/.452/.615 line. So the hitting was clearly there. Brendan Donnelly was also huge.

Oakland also seemed to do very well in this year's draft(2004) drafting guys like Kurt Suzuki, Dan Putnam and Landon Powell. I also like how they take guys who have a "break out" senior season ala Ryan Jones. Suzuki hit .413 in his final year, .350 in the year before and .392 the year before that with OPS' of 1.213, .903 and .994. Landon Powell hit .327 in his final year, .335 and .292 in his 3 college seasons with OPS' of 1.035, 1.000 and .835. Ryan Jones hit .400 in his final year, .264 and .260 in his 3 college seasons with OPS' of 1.334, .706 and .699. Adjusted for Park Factor and Strength of Schedule: Their 2004 seasons as of May 30th. Kyle Farnsworth is more of a liability than Sosa.

From June 27th to July 17th he didn't allow a run in 10 games. His opponents... White Sox: 2 games, Astros: 3 games, Cardinals: 2 games, Brewers: 3 games. All of his games vs St. Louis this year he's allowed 5 runs in 11 games. April: Gives up 6 runs in 12 games with 10 HA and 3 BB vs 8 K May: Gives up 3 runs in 14 games with 9 HA and 10 BB vs 16 K June: Gives up 8 runs in 16 games with 11 HA and 5 BB vs 19 K July: Gives up 3 runs in 12 games with 12 HA and 8 BB vs 19 K August: Given up 10 runs in 7 games with 11 HA and 4 BB vs 2 K Clearly he's having an awful August with 11 HA in only 7 games. He did manage to work his ERA from a 3.93 on June 25th to 3.16 on August 1st.

These #'s as of 8/12 and are a credit to Hardballtimes.com FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Essentially an approximation of what the pitcher's ERA would be with an "average" defense behind him. The formula is (13xHR + 3xBB - 2xK)/IP plus a league-specific factor (around 3.20). It works like DIPS ERA, if you're familiar with that, but it's a lot easier to compute and explain. DER: Defense Efficiency Ratio. DER is the proportion of batted balls (non-HR) that the pitcher's fielders successfully converted into outs. IF/Fly: The proportion of fly balls that are hit in the infield. Analysis indicates that pitchers do have some control over this type of batted ball. Hawkins = 2.67 ERA, 3.92 FIP, .749 DER Kent Mercker = 2.23 ERA, 3.43 FIP, .723 DER Glendon Rusch = 3.80 ERA, 3.76 FIP, .722 DER Kyle Farnsworth = 3.69 ERA, 4.27 FIP, .691 DER Mike Remlinger = 2.89 ERA, 3.79 FIP, .725 DER As bad as Farnsworth has been, one could argue that the defense behind him has been a lot worse then for any of the other relievers by a considerable margin. Farnsworth also has the best K/9 on the team at 10.7 although his 4.9 BB/9 and 1.3 HR/9(Maddux has a worse 1.5) hurt him a ton too. He has a .130 Infield/Fly ratio too which is fairly high.

Whoo hoo at me going up in batting and power! Something I sorely needed, screw my piss poor defense. The rest of the infielders can cover me or something

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

Also if you go by the 30 wins means he's good then what if he only wins 16 to 17 games the next season? Is he suddenly a bad goalie because he didn't win 30 games again? Fact is, he could win 30 games then 17 then 24 then 30, etc. and it means nothing because you can't judge how good a goalie is by his number of wins. Wins are too inconsistent to solely base how good a goalie is. How many games did you watch Cloutier play BTW? If less then half then that's a big blah to your argument.

Well, my career is quickly quickly dwindling now, lol. If I ever get straight out released Evo, delete me after the season cause I can't bear to watch my baby toil away in nowheresville. Don't worry folks, I'll be creating a person(maybe his kid) to succeed him. I lead the SFBL in career triples and stolen bases which is nice to see(still hold the season record at 71...whoo!). I also have a sparkling 81% success rate in SB's which is more amazing considering I've played in 12 seasons already.

In defense of White Sux, looking at his reliever stats using the last week button, they would've thrown 14.1 or 14.2 IP. So it's not like he was barely grazing the 7 IP minimum or anything here. His reliever IP's for just Tuesday through Thursday = 7 IP. He still has today, saturday and sunday to get a good 2-3 innings from his relievers each day. Whoever uses the "White Sux is only winning because his relievers only throw 7 IP with the odd starter in there" is BS. His relievers alone can easily get him 10 IP or so and he wouldn't need to toss in a starter. Me personally, I'm employing the same system whilst also using my 3 starters of Garcia, Orlando Hernandez and Mark Prior.

    Edgar Martinez to Announce Retirement

Well Edgar started DHing at Age 32 in 1995 and played until 2004(Age 41) primarily DHing. I think the DH helped Edgar out a ton in terms of his hitting otherwise I would expect him to have retired around 36 or so if he continued to play 3B.
