MAYBE three teams at the end of the year... They play Stanford (the patsy of the Pac10), Navy (service academy, although they've been a bowl team recently), and Duke (probably the worst BCS Conference team).

Iowa just lost to Iowa State after a failed attempt to re-create the Big Game kickoff return by Cal against Stanford.

It looks like the Big Ten will be won by Penn State or Purdue the way things are going right now... Michigan just plain sucks, Ohio State's offense is anemic (20 points against Akron, plus giving up a safety), and WTF is wrong with Wisconsin?

NFL Week 2 Grizzled Cheese Chat Thread

Which I agree with, given the long-term damage done to the Minnesota Timberwolves through David Stern stripping them of several 1st round picks over the Joe Johnson collusion issue. Granted, that's been exacerbated by T-Wolves GM Kevin McHale being one of the worst GMs in professional sports, but he was the one dumb enough to put Johnson's illegal contract in writing to begin with.

Maybe not, but futbol fans put this act to shame True dat. Texas and Oklahoma haven't started a shooting war over their game, unlike counties such as Nicaragua and El Salvador.

At least that one has a point... It's not a bunch of bandwagon Guido Rutgers fans yelling "F*ck you, Navy!" for no reason.

Iggy, They still could play Nebraska in the Big 12 title game, which has been the biggest land-mine of all the title games in college football. Teams like Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, etc. have all gone into that game before looking to be bound for the title game and come up short. By contrast, I think the only big upset in SEC Title Game history was LSU over Tennessee in 2001, which knocked Tennessee out of the title game. (I'm not just blowing my horn, either. LSU was the only serious underdog to win that game that I can think of, as other "upsets" tended to be of the "#10 Georgia beats #5 LSU" variety, not "unranked LSU beats #2 Tennessee" or "unranked Texas A&M beats #3 Kansas State".)

As of the end of the 2006 season, the all-time wins for current I-A programs stands as follows- Team Win % W L T Games played ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Michigan 0.74533 860 282 36 1178 2 Notre Dame 0.74382 821 269 42 1132 3 Texas 0.71756 813 310 33 1156 4 Nebraska 0.70578 810 326 40 1176 5 Ohio State 0.71228 786 302 52 1140 As soon as probably December of this year, Texas can catch Notre Dame for the 2nd most wins of all time in college football. That's provided that Notre Dame's slide continues and Texas can take care of business. (This assumes a 3-9 record for the Irish and a 11-2 record for the Longhorns.) The way things are looking for both programs, though, Texas will certainly catch ND by early next year and then start gaining on Michigan's total. Anyone wanting to look up their team's all-time record against certain opponents or how they fare on the all-time wins list can go here: http://football.stassen.com/records/ For example, LSU has a winning record against 8 of the other 11 teams in the SEC. Their three losing series in the SEC are against West rival Alabama, permanent East rival Florida, and rotating East rival Tennessee.

I think Callahan is scared shitless to go back to the NFL after his last experiment with the Raiders... Then again, the Raiders ARE the team most likely to pull a Sprewell on their coach.

There's another version of this that's "Mr. Delusional Alabama Fan". Instead of "How did Northwestern score fifty-four?!?" it was "We shoulda' hired Coach Croom..."

The funny thing is that the AP Poll (currently listed by Bored) better reflects what's going on in football than the coaches' poll (unlisted), which still has Florida getting 7 first-place votes. (That poll's breakdown on first-place votes is 42-11-7 for USC, LSU, and Florida, respectively. While Florida may be a Top 5 team, the #1 team in the country shouldn't be giving up 31 points to Troy if another Top 5 team destroyed a BCS conference powerhouse 48-7 in that same weekend.) As much as I bitch about the AP poll on a regular basis due to the screwiness of some of their voting over the past few years, they've actually got it more together this week than the coaches.

That's Iggy's personal Top 25, which is fully independent of the real Top 25. It doesn't have to reflect what voters will do because he calls them as he sees them.

V-Tech's OFFENSE looked like crap. Their defense only gave up 7 points.

I don't mind if people rank LSU ahead of USC now. I think they should wait another week before doing that, though. It really doesn't matter anyway, once this team beats Nebraska in Lincoln, USC will be the recognized #1 and few will object. Considering that Nebraska almost threw the game away against Wake today, I'm not sure that whipping them at their home stadium would be more impressive than dismantling V-Tech on a national stage.

Really? Aren't voters usually hesitant to take votes away from an idle team? I mean with Michigan last season, they had basically lost their conference title game while Florida won theirs, so that's justified in voters putting Florida over Michigan after an idle week, but they are still in love with USC. Then again LSU did just beat the ridiculously high ranked VT. Early in the season, rankings are supposed to be fluid because you're not sure how good teams are yet. Changing rankings dramatically at the end of the season when a team is idle is generally frowned upon. PS- Per the local radio guys, Brent Musberger was high on LSU during the game but his broadcast partner, Kirk Herbstriet, absolutely refuses to put them over USC despite dismantling a respected V-Tech program.

LSU finishes the night with 597 yards of offense against the highly-regarded V-Tech defense. A good amount of those yards (about 200) came on drives late in the game when the 2nd stringers, like QB Ryan Perriloux and WR Terrance Tolliver, were in against the 1st string V-Tech defense. If nothing else, this should siphon off some 1st place votes from USC and the one vote that West Virginia's been getting (They gave up 23 to Marshall in the first 3 quarters and were down at the half 13-6, so it wasn't like they were scoring on the 2nd stringers at the end of the game).

They just showed the passing chart for Oregon... Whoever is covering the left side and center of the Michigan defensive backfield needs to have their scholarships pulled, as they've given up about 250 yards by themselves. (The right side of the defensive backfield has only given up about 20 yards.)
