What I mean is that a miraculous USC or Notre Dame comeback gets attention and ESPY awards. A Wazzu comeback to beat USC becomes focused on USC and the night Steve Smith had, not that they lost and how.

Wazzu has 1 play to throw a 40-yard Hail Mary and kick the extra point. It'll be interesting, if they make it, to see the media downplay it. EDIT- NM... USC interception at the 3.

At least Auburn can say that Darth Visor (Spurrier) is coaching Carolina. What's USC's excuse?

    NBA Preseason Thread

I think it's realistic to put them in the ECF but would be a stretch to say they go to the Finals or win it all. They've got good outside shooters already and, with the combination of Wallace and Tyrus Thomas, they've got good defenders capable of dominating in the paint. The questions they'll really have to answer are whether Ben's offensive shortcomings can be worked around and whether Tyrus Thomas's offense starts developing fully. Thomas put up a lot of points at times at LSU, but some of them were the result of a fast break / alley oop combo, which are too gimmicky to work well in the pros. If he developed his offensive game like he was reputed to before the draft, it may mean that they can put him in at the C rather than the PF at times when they need an extra shooter out on the floor, since Wallace's nerve damage makes him pretty useless at putting up points. I'd be nervous about putting them in the Finals or having them win it all because I feel that Cleveland, Miami, and New Jersey are all Finals contenders in the East and that San Antonio and Dallas will be dangerous out of the West. (New Jersey's a bit of a stretch, but I figure that having Marcus Williams available to spell Jason Kidd will help out considering that Kidd has had some injuries in the past.)

Florida's officially stuck it in and broke it off in Alabama during the 2nd half. Alabama's offense is officially on life-support again, just like last year once Prothro went out with an injury.

    Marvel's Civil War

AFAIK, the deal with Venom is that Eddie Brock had cancer and died from it. (The cancer stimulated adrenal glands or something, which is why the symbiote didn't burn out his body when it bonded with him.) Scorpion ended up with the symbiote as part of some huge plot involving a Sinister Twelve or somesuch.

Just got back from LSU-Miss State (Left during the 50 minute lightning delay) I'm pissed at LSU's 2nd string defense for giving up 14 points to Mississippi State... The 1st string has only given up 13 points all year (7 to Auburn, 3 to LA Lafayette, 3 to Mississippi State in the 2nd quarter), while the second string gave up 14 so far to Miss State, 7 to Tulane, and 3 to Arizona. I know it's pissy to complain about *only* holding a team that low, but the 2nd string's effort is making the 1st team's defensive efforts seem less impressive despite being the #1 defense in the country.

Rutgers ball, game over. ESPN's taking this opportunity to make comments about Oklahoma's team watching this in their hotel rooms and asking each other "Where was this review crew when we needed them?"

Rutgers is up by 8 with 43 seconds left, but South Florida is driving. Thanks to a late hit by Rutgers on the QB, South Florida is down to the Rutgers 21. EDIT- South Florida had a TD, but there was a holding flag on the play. 2nd and goal on South Florida at the Rutgers 15 with 22 seconds left. EDIT 2- TD by South Florida with 15 seconds left to play. HOWEVER, Rutgers has called a TD to challenge the play. EDIT 3- South Florida's receiver drops the ball in the end zone on the conversion, so it's pretty much over. South Florida will try an onsides kick though. EDIT 4- South Florida got the ball, but it looks like it didn't go 10 yards. The refs are sending it up to review, but it looks like the official call was that the ball didn't go far enough for a South Florida recovery.

    College Hoops: 4/13/2006 - Midnight Madness (10/16/2006)

This coming from a man who once cancelled a game against Saint Joseph's in the Palestra in 1996 due to a weather report forecasting a snowstorm... I seem to recall the St. Joseph's coach making a joke about how funny he found it that a team full of McDonalds' All-Americans were ducking a team that was just a bunch of regular kids eating at McDonalds'.

It's just because it's an action shot. I DID resist the temptation to add a caption of "Hair gel courtesy of Ben Stiller" to the bottom of it.

TCU is officially amongst the ranks of the beaten. Auburn is up only 14-10 over South Carolina at the half which, IMHO, is a surprise considering that Georgia shut out SC a few weeks back.

Reminds me of the LAST time TCU got national TV exposure as a BCS-Buster... Southern Miss beat the shit out of them for 3 quarters and it only got close in the 4th because of two onsides kicks recovered by the horny toads.

    Breaking News: TO attempts suicide

To re-use an old joke told by Ted Dibiase about Tully Blanchard's QB play at West Texas State: "I heard that Jake Plummer tried to commit suicide but that someone intercepted the bullet."

Headlines most people thought they'd never write: "Vanderbilt 33-point favorite over Temple". http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_blogs/...sure-thing.html I know that Vandy's defense is good, but their offense is subpar. I guess they'll be getting a lot of help from Temple throwing picks and fumbling all day long in order to cover.

    PlayStation 3

Anyone else getting a 3DO vibe from this launch? Overpriced game system, close to $700 - Check Questionable gaming support - Check Reasonably-priced rival systems - Check The way things are looking, I'm probably going to buy a Wii and a 360 in the next few months, but not a PS3 unless they can REALLY find a way to sell me on it. And as much as I'm a sucker for old games, I've still got enough of my PS1 collection that it wouldn't be a big deal for me to "buy" some of those games again. (The only things I'd probably buy from that particular Virtual Console would be games I can't readily get elsewhere, like Tomba 2, or some of the later RPG release I didn't buy like Arc The Lad)

    Marvel's Civil War

Let's see about a recap so far... New Warriors: Dead, except for Speedball Spider-man: Gave up his secret identity, is now officially Iron Man's personal rent-boy. Thor: Cloned, real one could still return. (Just fucking shoot me now) Thunderbolts: MASSIVE recruitment campaign... The only good thing coming out of this is that there are a bunch of cool villains that Zemo and company can lord over now, like Doc Ock, Bullseye, Green Goblin, Lady Deathstrike, Taskmaster, and the Wrecking Crew. Fantastic Four: Split up. Reed's pro-registration, Johnny and Sue are anti-registration, and Thing's staying neutral. Egghead Reed fucks up yet again when it comes to doing things on a personal level. It'll take them actually getting around to finishing the series (SERIOUS delays already), but it looks like this could be one of those things that takes a long-term view to determine its quality. Killing off minor characters for no reason = bullshit. If you're going to do a massive kill-off, at least do it like the original Scourge business from the mid-80s where you have a build-up, a massive kill-off, and a follow-up. Spidey's change, which has been happening since he joined the New Avengers, is something I don't really agree with but I'd like to see what they do with it. (Spidey's always been very lone-wolf. Having to answer to Stark AND the feds is a new thing for him.) The Thunderbolts becoming the default government superhero team AND getting access to heavy hitters like Bullseye makes things interesting. This brings them back to where they were around issue 5, as opposed to the dynamic that was used for about 75% of their issues. (By that, I mean the "X-Men style heroes who get shit-upon by the government" dynamic ever since they blew their cover and were exposed as the Masters Of Evil.) This is something I'd like to see them continue with for a while, but they'll probably make Zemo do something to fuck it up before the end of the Civil War. The Fantastic Four- I smell a new line-up. They do this every so often when either Reed and Sue have marriage problems or Thing goes off on his own. However, it looks like it could be everyone BUT Reed leaving this time, which begs the question of who the other three members would be. She-Hulk would be an obvious choice based on history, but Luke Cage and other heroes with a past link to the Four tended to go anti-registration.

Actually, Arizona DID have USC on the ropes until late in the 3rd, down only 3-0 in a game that should have been an easy blowout. The LSU game was over about as fast as it started, though.

My thoughts exactly on that game. Smith is a horrible coach who can't recruit. And MSU rebounding to be a top 25 team is practically impossible considering the beatings that UofM and OSU are going to put on them, combined with their usual loss to a team they should beat (not counting ND in that). Hopefully this will be John L.'s last year here. IMHO, It's not the coach as much as the school that is the problem when it come to recruiting. Nick Saban had a lot of the same problems when HE was at Michigan State, as he'd lose big recruits to U of M and other Big Ten schools then would start off the season good before blowing it all at the end of the year and get raped in a bowl game. If Sullivan habitually has late-game collapses like the one against Notre Dame, THAT is his fault because he can't coach a full 4 quarters.

Damn, that's ALMOST as funny as if they'd sold the rights to The Pink Taco. "And Leinart is laid out again at The Pink Taco! You know he won't be getting up anytime soon!"

    NFL Week 3

Only if they're playing a team with no run defense, which means there's pretty much no shot they're going to the Super Bowl because the Bears and Seahawks can both stop the run.
