College Hoops: National Semifinals and The Championship Game

More proof that some in the sports media are still fucking clueless. I may be a serious LSU homer, but at least I try to find out about other teams and not write them off. -

I'm wondering if the writer's local area has issued a Smug Alert after reading his tripe. [/south Park reference] -
College Hoops: National Semifinals and The Championship Game

Pretty much. I think LSU fans actually predicted this, as there was a joke floating around here before that article was posted... "Rumor mill- If LSU wins the NCAA tournament, USC will declare themselves co-champions. When USC coach Tim Floyd was interviewed, he said, "Well, we didn't make it to the NCAA or NIT tournaments, but the media does like us better than anyone else." -

Thankfully, your statements are in agreement with mine rather than one of the asshats at Fox Sports. Take a look at this elitist article... I think this bastard must have picked all #1s to go to the title game and is trying to downplay the accomplishments of the actual Final Four teams as a result. -
I'm basically incommunicado from Saturday the 1st through at least part of of Monday the 3rd, as I'll be leaving LA for Georgia on that Saturday and then coming back on Monday, with no Internet in the meantime and no guarantee of when I'll return due to traffic and other possible problems. I'm thinking that leaving a list of 2 potential picks, in order, with someone could work since the Saints aren't likely to trade that pick in the next week.

Good on one hand, as it helps to dispel the "Kentucky and the 11 Dwarfs" mindset that most people have about the SEC. Bad on the other hand, as Florida has, so far, proven to be the only team capable of beating LSU by a somewhat comfortable margin. I'd think that an LSU-George Mason matchup would probably be the best, but I'm not going to sneeze at LSU-Florida. UCLA should lose just because their program is THE blue-blood program of college basketball... like the fuckin' Yankees.

That's a bad day for me... I'm going to be in transit from Georgia to Louisiana and I'm unsure when I'll be getting home. Worst comes to worst, I'll have to give Bored a list of my top picks, in order, for the #2 pick or wherever the 'Aints end up.

In LSU's defense, their SEC Tournament game against Florida was played without Tyrus Thomas. I'm not as sure about the regular-season game, but there may have been another significant injury at the time.
-
According to CNNSI, LSU was 10-1 before the Texas game. Granted, those odds have probably gotten significantly better since they took down the Longhorns, who were a 4-1 or 5-1 shot at the time.

I'm thinking of calling up Vegas and putting $50 or more on the Tigers to win it all at 10-1. (I'm not a huge gambler like some of you apparently are, but I don't mind putting down a bet I can afford to lose in order to pull down some serious change if it pays off. After I went against my better judgement and did *NOT* place a bet on LSU to win the NCAA Football title in 2003 at 20-1 or so, I was kicking myself for months afterwards.) Considering how they took current favorite UConn to the wire earlier this year, losing by 1, I'd say they've got a good chance to pull it off IF they keep their heads straight against UCLA and the winner of UConn-G. Mason-Florida-Villanova.

I'd be happy without Memphis, as the Southern Miss fan in me wants them to be chronically disappointed that the all-mighty Cal can't bring them to the next level which, depending on your interpretation, is either a Final Four or the Big East. (Memphis fans were more than slightly pissed to be passed over for the Big East's expansion in favor of South Florida.)
-
Wow... 7 minutes in and Memphis is getting anally raped by UCLA so far. I wonder if Cal and company will hit a hot streak or if this will be so one-sided all night.
-
As I said a few weeks back, LSU has had consistency problems all year but, when it gels just right, they can play with anyone in the country. The question at hand is now "Can they beat Memphis or UCLA next week?"
-
Cabbageboy gets it wrong again... this may be one of the best games of the tourney.
-
I think Tyrus and Big Baby will both stay if they see a chance to win a title next year. Considering that Tack Minor will likely get a medical redshirt and be eligible next year, they'd be very dangerous because they'd have a true point guard.
-
I think Texas just became LSU fans... BTW, who was talking that smack about how Reddick wasn't going to be playing his last game in college against a team like LSU?
-
LSU's gonna win... YEAAAAAHHHH, BAY-BEE!!!!!!!!
-
I was in the car for most of this game... Every time LSU got a block, I screamed out "Don't you BRING that weak tot action here!" because I've seen too many Sonic commercials lately.

I think part of the bias now comes from certain "Superconferences" having all the teams with a perception of greatness, which is fallout going back to the SEC expansion and the subsequent Bowl Alliances in football. Before the SEC expansion, there were the following major conferences: SEC Southwest (Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, TCU, SMU, Baylor, etc.) Big 8 (The Big 12 minus the Texas teams) ACC (No Florida State, Miami, BC, or V-Tech) Big Ten Pac Ten Big East WAC (BYU, UNLV) Metro (Louisville, Cincinnati, Tulane, Memphis) The SEC picking up Arkansas hastened the Southwest Conference's destruction, which sent four teams to the Big 8 and the rest to the WAC and Conference USA. Conference USA was formed out of the Metro conference and various independents, such as East Carolina and Houston (cast off from the SWC). That took an automatic bid out for one of the "major" conferences and threw their teams into one of several other conferences. The WAC expanded too large (16 teams) and then split in two when 8 schools left to form the Mountain West. The dominos kept tumbling for the movement of teams to the Big 6 power conferences. Add into the mix the aggressive NCAA prosecution of some programs, typically mid-majors, (UNLV and Fresno State under Tark, Tulane after Hod Rod Williams was caught point-shaving, etc.) and you can see the landscape as it stands today.

I was a senior in HS when the show started... I'd seen Spirit Of Christmas and the first few eps of the show on RealPlayer around September or October of that year, but my city didn't get Comedy Central until just before the first Mr. Hankey episode in December.

I'd ease up on some of the celebration fines, but only if the celebration in question is either pretty inoffensive (The "Please don't fine me" sign) or something pretty creative (Terrell Owens' Sharpe incident, Joe Horn's cell phone call). Something creative should be acknowledged by the league with a paraphrased version of the manager's comments to Willie Mays Hayes in Major League after a showy basket-catch... "Nice catch, Hayes. Don't ever fuckin' do it again."
-
Georgetown is up 38-25 at the half over Ohio State. Looks like another upset on the horizon, although this one is still within the major conferences.
-
WVU wouldn't play BC until the finals... I think you mean the winner of LSU-Duke and then the winner of Memphis-Bucknell-Gonzaga-UCLA.
-
Down by 13 with 1:30 left... They're not dead yet but they're on life support.
-
DC is set... UConn vs. Washington and George Mason vs. Wichita State. Northwestern State can still nip West Virginia, but they've got to come up with a quick run, as they're down by 8 with about 4 minutes left.
