Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 14

Secret Agent, You better fucking thank me for getting a BCS Bowl Bid out of this... If I hadn't wiped the floor with Canadian Chris two weeks ago, I'd be back in Jack Osborne's Oxycotin Bowl this year defending my title.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 14

Bah... I go from the Benchwarmer Bob Bored Bowl to the Lucky Strikes Cigarettes Tar Bowl? That fucking sucks! I guess LSU = Oregon for the purposes of this contest then...

WOW... UCLA just downed a punt on the 3 thanks to a great catch by a UCLA defender.

True, dat... They're 2nd or worse in all computer rankings as of now. Combine a drop in computer rankings with a poll number drop of at least 3 and you've got the recipe for either a Texas vs. Penn State or Texas vs. LSU game.

If Katrina hadn't happened, I'd have suggested that the title game take place in the Superdome instead... Considering that New Orleans is the mid-point of the East/West divide in CUSA (Tulane and Southern Miss, 1 hour away from each other, are in separate conferences), it would have been the perfect place.

Two Warrants out for Ric Flair's Arrest

Jesus, Ric, get a fucking accountant... This is at least the 2nd or 3rd time that he's been stung for back taxes. Jim Crockett Jr. bailed him out the first time back in the 1980s but he apparently hasn't been looking too hard at the books since then.

    Fantasy Football Help Redux

Dropped Reggie Brown and picked up Battle. Unfortunately, SF-Houston is going to be on New Year's. That puts it just beyond the Fantasy season in my league. Houston's next 4 are against Baltimore (Already have Todd Heap, can't get Derrick Mason), Tennessee (no good WRs available there), Arizona (ditto), and Jacksonville (Greg Jones could tear their D like a paper bag). However, SF *IS* playing St. Louis in a few weeks... If a WR can't score against St. Louis, they don't belong in the league.

Probably an embarassing Marv Albert type of civil suit in which stuff like the Masked Avenger would come up in open court.

The Flair mugshot and the Cliffs Notes version of the story were on Fox News tonight. It was one of those "Around The World In 60 Seconds" story clips.

    Fantasy Football Help Redux

You're right, I meant Tennessee, the ex-Oilers, are the designated ass-rape victims this week. As for the WR position, I don't play in a point-per-possession league... it's a regular yardage-and-TDs league with no bonus for receptions. I'm tempted to dump Reggie Brown and pick up Arnaz Battle, who's one of the available WRs on the Free Agent pile right now. Battle was the go-to receiver for San Fran last week and may get some decent looks on Sunday. BTW, here's my opponent's current lineup: QB- Peyton Manning (Indy) RB #1- Tiki Barber (NYG) RB #2- Willie Parker (Pitt) WR #1- Terry Glenn (Dal) WR #2- Anquan Bolden (Ariz) WR #3- Joe Horn (NO) TE- Desmond Clark (Chi) K- Jay "Shank" Feely (NYG) D- Philadelphia He's only got three real play-makers on that team... Manning, Barber, and Bolden. Those three, however, will put up a LOT of his points. Parker is flaky and, besides that, playing a tough Cincy D this week. Add Duce Staley and Bettis being healthy and available into the mix and his fantasy value becomes mediocre. Glenn is flaky and playing the Giants this week. Joe Horn has played like shit since he got injured in week 3. Donte Stallworth is now the #1 receiver for NO. Desmond Clark is a third-tier TE at best. Feely probably won't be taking too many FG attempts this week to say the least... Philly is playing Seattle... Between Alexander and Jurivicius, they'll be giving up a LOT of points quick. According to Yahoo's projections, Manning will score about 23 Fantasy Points this week (284 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT). Barber will score 10 (About 100 yards on the ground, 16 in the air, and probably a TD) . Bolden will score 7 points (80 yards and possibly a TD).

Actually, it's happened once... In 2001, an 8-3 LSU team made its way to Atlanta through the back door after Ole Miss collapsed, losing three of their last four games to give away the SEC West title. They went in as a severe underdog but, after QB Rohan Davey got hurt, a then-obscure backup QB named Matt Mauck stepped in and lead the Tigers to victory over #2 Tennessee, knocking them out of the BCS title game. That wasn't an isolated occurrence that year... That was the same season Nebraska blew a game against Colorado in the last week of the season to miss out on the Big 12 Championship then got to face Miami in the title game because Colorado and Tennessee both lost in their championship games. At least LSU went on to beat Big Ten champ Illinois solidly in the Sugar Bowl, proving that their win over Tennessee wasn't a fluke like K-State destroying Oklahoma then getting killed by Ohio State.

    Fantasy Football Help Redux

Last week of the regular season in my league. Scores haven't been fully tallied to reflect the Colts/Steelers game, but I'm in roughly 5th or 6th place in a 14-team league, which means I'm in one of the last two playoff spots for now. My opponent is a team with an identical record but has probably scored more fantasy points. He happens to have Peyton Manning as his QB. That's bad news for me considering the Colts are playing Houston this week. My team has the following positions sewed up: QB- Tom Brady (New England) RB #1- Rudy Johnson (Cincinnati) WR #1- Roy Williams (Detroit) WR #2- Joe Jurivicius (Seattle) TE- Todd Heap (Baltimore) K- T. Peterson (Atlanta) DEF- Chicago I'm iffier about who to use as my #2 RB and my #3 WR. RBs- TJ Duckett (Atlanta) Samkon Gado (Green Bay) Antowan Smith (New Orleans) Greg Jones (Jacksonville) Duckett has been my #2 back for most of the season, when healthy. Him being the team's "vulture", coming in to punch the ball into the end zone instead of Warrick Dunn, has been his main selling point, as 1 TD from him is worth the same as 120 rushing yards in my league. Jones has the best matchup, against Cleveland, but I'd have to wait for "Fragile" Fred Taylor to be announced as out for this week. If he starts, I figure he's good for at LEAST 1 TD and a bunch of yards, since Jacksonville is without Leftwich for several weeks. Gado has the worst matchup, against Chicago, but has done the best of the four over the past month. His raw speed may be enough to get him past the tough Chicago D, but I'm more interested in a sure thing than a risky proposition. Smith is in a better matchup than Gado but plays on a throwing team and hasn't shown much since shortly after taking over the starting position for the Saints. However, weird things usually happen when the Saints play Tampa Bay. WRs- Eddie Kennison (Kansas City) Brandon Lloyd (San Francisco) Reggie Brown (Philadelphia) I'm leaning towards Kennison, who's been in my starting lineup for most of the season. However, he's in questionable matchup this week, against Denver, so I'm exploring my options. Brandon Lloyd is in a very favorable matchup, against Arizona, but has a questionable QB situation which has lead SF to run the ball more. Reggie Brown showed flashes of brilliance in his first game subbing for TO, but has since dropped completely off the Fantasy Football radar. I don't think going up against Seattle this week is going to help him though. Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

No way in hell was UofA ranked even top 25 those years. Maybe in basketball. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Arizona was ranked like #3 in the beginning of 1999, but got squashed by PSU and I don't think they have been ranked since. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I had my year wrong... it was 1998. http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/polls_1936_present.html Arizona finished 4th in both polls in 1998 and was ranked #3 in the pre-season 1999 poll.

    NFL Week Twelve

Anybody else see Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart in a Jets Uniform next year? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Definitely Leinart... Pennington is SO messed up that they really need to bring in a good QB, even as a backup if he's "healthy".

    NFL Week Twelve

52 yard FG attempt by the Jets to see if they can beat the Saints. Let's see if blowing a high draft pick on a kicker will actually pay off... SHORT by about 1 foot Saints win... goddammit. (I want them to get a Top 5 draft pick for sure... losing to the Jets would have ensured it.)

WVU is underwhelming. Great record, but one of the things that drags them down is the fact they play in such a pathetic conference now. If they would have done this last year with Miami, VT, and BC all there people would be on their bandwagon. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> WVU's schedule was so soft last year, despite playing a "down" V-Tech team (they lost early in that season but won the ACC anyway), that there were fears they'd go undefeated and sneak into the title game.

In LSU's defense, they actually scheduled Arizona for a 2-game series back in the year when Arizona was actually ranked #4 in the country (2001 or 2002?).

I bet on: Pittsburgh LSU Colorado Iowa State Mississippi Cincinnatti Notre Dame Louisville Oklahoma State UL Monroe Georgia Tech Florida State God, it's still hard to imagine that many games could be wrong. All told, I lost $1300. Again, I was up $2000 for the year on college football going in, and I'm up a lot more than that on poker, so the money doesn't really hurt, but my ego's severely bruised, and I can't imagine counting on betting college football to get me anywhere ever again. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dude, and this is coming from an LSU fan here, be VERY wary about taking LSU to beat the spread against ANYBODY. LSU has been horrible at beating the spread for at least a year now, as the Oregon State and Troy games last year and Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee games this year have shown. As for the other games, try to focus on one or two that you think are REALLY good bets instead of just spreading a lot of money around. For example, given Florida State's troubles over the past few weeks, I'd have looked at the spread against Florida and gauged how well Florida could cover it.

Good question. SEC bowl heirarchy: If LSU wins SEC Title Game: Sugar- LSU Capitol One- Auburn Outback- Georgia Cotton- Alabama Peach- South Carolina Independence- Florida If Georgia wins SEC Title Game: Sugar- Georgia Capitol One- Auburn Outback- South Carolina Cotton- LSU Peach- Alabama Independence- Florida The main thing is that the Outback Bowl tends to take an SEC East team and the Cotton tends to take an SEC West team. Depending on which team wins the SEC Title Game, different teams could end up in the Outback Bowl or Cotton Bowl and, therefore, remove the team that the Peach Bowl would prefer.

Shouldn't be your problem... Since either APO or I will probably be going to the Benchwarmer Bob Bored Bowl, you'll probably slide into the #2 slot, which is the Lucky Strikes Cigarettes Tar Bowl.

Rutgers is almost guaranteed to go to the Insight Bowl no matter what. Several Insight bigwigs are tied into Rutgers and have said they plan on trying to get them invited to the bowl this year.
