Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 13

Yeah, bay-bee! Now I just need to knock off the Crimson Tide next week to go to the Benchwarmer Bob Bored Bowl~!

Pretty much right, except that the Orange takes either the ACC *or* the Big East champion. Barring a VERY ugly Florida State win in the ACC title game, they'll take Virginia Tech over West Virginia in a heartbeat.

Rose Bowl has to take 1 and 2 (USC and Texas as of now). Fiesta gets the first real choice of the selection process and will take ND and pull strings to ensure a ND-PSU matchup.

INT Georgia to wrap up the win. The stellar SEC defenses are living up to their reputations this week.

After that UCLA game, I'd certainly see them going for it in regulation.

Georgia near the Georgia Tech 20 with about 4 minutes left in the game. Score is currently tied at 7. TD GEORGIA~!

I'd say it would be a good possibility... The Fiesta had been creaming itself over the possibility of Penn State vs. Notre Dame. With Notre Dame out of the picture, their choices come down to Ohio State, Miami, Oregon, and either West Virginia or the winner of Virginia Tech vs. Florida State in the ACC title game. The best possibility out of those certainly appears to be Oregon.

Nevada recovers with 49 seconds left. They need to get a First Down to outlast Fresno's 2 Time Outs.

Fresno TD with about 50 seconds left. Now they have to get an onsides kick and try to do it again. 2 pt. conversion good.

TD Nevada with about 1:15 left (clock is broken). Barring Fresno State pulling 11 points out of their asses in the next minute and change, they're losing tonight.

As big of an LSU fan as I am, an At Large bid for them would require a LOT of help from elsewhere. For one, it means no Notre Dame. For another, it means that Ohio State, Oregon, and/or Miami would have to be unappealing At Large teams. That would depend on the bowl involved. If Miami is an At Large, they probably won't go to the Orange Bowl because the Orange will probably take the ACC champ over the Big East champ. If Ohio State gets an At Large, it means they'll probably be going to the Sugar or Orange, as the Fiesta seems to want Penn State badly. If Oregon gets an At Large, it'll have to be to the Fiesta Bowl. They don't travel well enough to the east to get a bid to the Sugar or Orange. If LSU gets an At Large, it'll probably be to the Orange. They can't get an At Large to the Sugar (would be an SEC Title Game rematch with Georgia) and they're unlikely to go to the Fiesta (already played Arizona State in Tempe earlier this year).

... Fresno is still down 16-24 in the 3rd against a half-assed Nevada team. Stanford has tied it up 14 all against Notre Dame right before the half. Virginia Tech is only up 6-3 on UNC at the half. These three games alone will cause all kinds of fun with the computer polls and the BCS, depending on the outcomes.

Does anyone like actually going to the games?

I didn't like going to Southern Miss games when I was in college, but that was more of a function of what I was expecting as a life-long LSU fan. I went to Southern Miss vs. Texas A&M as my first Southern Miss game and, because it was a daytime game, I got burned red as a lobster. That was an experience I DIDN'T have often at LSU, as LSU usually played at 6:30 PM or later unless it was a televised game on Jefferson Pilot (11AM) or CBS (2:30). The Southern Miss game I liked the most was when I went to New Orleans to see them whip the shit out of Tulane at the Superdome. Nothing like watching your team win, being in a climate-controlled arena, and getting a beer all while at a college game.

As opposed to Florida-Florida State, where at least 2 players got ejected while I was watching and probably a lot more than that did throughout the whole game.

Notre Dame gets a pass from the BCS because they're Notre fuckin' Dame. They were specifically written into the original BCS selection process while all the mid-majors were told "You MIGHT get an At Large but don't count on it." Notre Dame's Fiesta bowl appearance under Whittingham should have canned that clause, when Oregon knocked the living piss out of them, but it didn't happen.

Until Notre Dame decides that it's in their best interests to join the Big Ten instead of being independent in football and in the Big East in all other sports, it ain't happening. Of course, NBC declining to renew Notre Dame's football contract could do it... It's hard to justify paying so much to see Notre Dame vs. Navy, vs. Air Force, vs. Rutgers, etc. in order to get one or two good games like Notre Dame vs. Michigan or Notre Dame vs. USC.

If the divisions are done properly, they should still have at least 1-2 good teams each year. In the SEC, the SEC East has been *THE* power division of the conference since the inception of the East/West split thanks to Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia. However, the West has still had some very good teams each year because Alabama and Auburn are constant winners, LSU has been resurgent, and Arkansas and Ole Miss have both had runs of good years. The only exception to the rule is Mississippi State, which has had about 2 good years in the past 15 seasons and is a perennial cellar-dweller a la Vandy in the East.

Actually, that's a trick question... The Big Ten has *ELEVEN* teams ever since Penn St. joined.

Florida State is getting killed by Florida, which hurts the ACC's computer rankings and helps the SEC.

I could deal with that slightly better than Iowa State or South Florida going to the Sugar Bowl.

Define "good season". If Miami or Virginia Tech were still in the Big East, I could easily see them playing in the title game and, thus, saving the league's bid for about 3 years. The only teams I can see posting a 10-1 record over the next 2-3 years are Louisville and West Virginia, and either of them would still be a borderline BCS team. Hell, West Virginia is 9-1 right now, with that one loss being against Virginia Tech, and they're still only 11th in the BCS poll. Not that them coming in at 11th is a BAD thing, as they make their target ranking to stay eligible, but it gives them less of a cushon than if, say, unranked South Florida miraculously gets the Big East's BCS bid by beating West Virginia. Mix in Pitt's 19th place ranking last year and South Florida's projected miniscule ranking this year (the poll only goes up to 25 and they're unranked as of now) and you've got 2 bad years that will drag the conference down for a few years.

WVU and Louisville, based on prior history in OOC scheduling and national respect, would probably rank within the Top 12 in the BCS should they have a presentable record (9-2 or better) and no embarassing losses. Other teams in the Big East that could back into a bid, such as UConn, Rutgers, and South Florida, are less likely to have such presentable numbers. I'm less concerned with OOC scheduling than whether a team can win the conference by splitting 7-8 Big East games and going to the BCS bowl with a 7-5 record.
