Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 8

Can we change your team name from Minnesota to Notre Dame? That seems more appropriate somehow... *EDIT* Never mind, forgot that Notre Dame was already taken. However, you ARE getting a Notre Dame-like boost by being ranked highly despite losing so many games.
  2. I would think them not being able to talk or sign or do much of anything would be another reason. Plus, what the hell do animals sue about? *resists temptation to make jokes about a class action suit by gerbils against San Francisco area businesses*
  3. The 9th Circuit is being broken into three separate circuits soon and a BUNCH of new judges will be appointed in order to break up the backlog of cases they have. Can't happen a minute too soon IMHO, as the 9th Circuit is the fucking kangaroo court of the US justice system right now.

Poll shows solidly Dem state leaning to Bush

Kerry having to spend precious resources this late in the game to keep Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington in his column are going to bite him in the ass when he loses Iowa or Wisconsin (Gore states in 2000) or doesn't take New Hampshire or Ohio (Bush states in 2000).

Poll shows solidly Dem state leaning to Bush

Hawaii may still go for Kerry but ANY increased attention that the Democrats have to give it takes resources away from important battleground states like Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin, and Ohio. This follows the current theory that the Dems are trying to rally their base rather than attack in Bush's states. The biggest piece of news that confirms this to me is Bill Clinton getting out of his hospital bed to campaign for Kerry in Pennsylvania. While Pennsylvania is an important state in this election, it's a traditional Democrat state and one that's seen as being in Kerry's column already. If Kerry's having to call in the big guns to hold a state already seen as leaning towards him, it doesn't bode well for him in other battlegrounds.

Poll shows solidly Dem state leaning to Bush

New Jersey was affected by more than McGreevy... New Jersey is one of the states most directly affected by the War On Terror between NJ residents directly affected by 9/11 as well as the other terror alerts on targets in New Jersey such as banks in Newark. In addition, New Jersey was just across the river from the Republican convention in NYC, so they got a lot of coverage on what was going on there, which may or may not have taken hold there. Kerry may still win New Jersey but, if it's tight, it is NOT just because the soon-to-resign governor pissed off the Dem base there.

kkk --- Your Governor is a Winner

$10 says that if Pennsylvania is contested in court and the PA governor refuses to accept the military ballots, he'll be recalled within a year. By the state screwing around completely with the absentee ballots, this guarantees there will be at least 20,000 pissed off soldiers plus several pissed off US senators. (I'd heard a little about this some weeks back when the father of a soldier called Sean Hannity to say that his son never received his absentee ballot and that neither Rick Santorum nor Arlen Spector could find out why it wasn't showing up)

    Electoral Vote Predictor 2004.

I'm already stocking up on canned goods and shotgun shells myself... Short of a decisive (5-10% OR 80-electoral vote) victory, NO ONE will be happy with the results of this election. The question is what people will do if they feel that they got screwed. EDIT- WHOOPS... those are my November 3 supplies. My November 2 supplies include a blender, ice, two large bottles of Hurricane mix, and a large assortment of alcohol.

    Yeah, Good Plan...

"What the fuck is up in Washington DC? Marion Berry smoked crack ON TAPE and got his job back. You smoke crack at MCDONALDS and you ain't getting your job back. I'd REALLY like to see who he was running against... must have been a guy on heroin whose campaign slogan was 'Smack, not crack'!" - Chris Rock

This Should Cheer up Some People

Nonetheless, Carnahan was a cadaver. And Ashcroft COULD have sued and won in court --- since Carnahan could not handle the single most basic requirement of office, namely living in MO. -=Mike In retrospect...I think he would have made a better second-choice Senator than AG. Some people have made the argument that irregularities in the St. Louis voting in 2000 is the reason that John Ashcroft is the most hated man in the US rather than some anonymous senator who ran against a dead guy. That was a really close election (roughly 50,000 votes difference out of 2.3 million cast) and there were questions about some of the ballots, especially since one particular polling station was open longer than they were allowed to by law.

This Should Cheer up Some People

The funny thing is that Ashcroft is STILL the best Attorney General in the last 12 years... Hell, probably longer than that depending on the opinions you hold on Ed Meese (Mr. anti-porno himself under Reagan). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Attorney_General The most recent Attorney General with any (positive) notoriety is RFK in the 1960s. Most other AGs in the past 40 years who get mentioned were colossal screwups (Janet Reno, John Mitchell) or people famous for reasons OTHER than their performances as AG. Examples- Richard Kleindienst and Elliot Richardson are famous only for getting fired by Richard Nixon for refusing to dismiss the Special Prosecutor for Watergate. Ramsay Clark is more well-known for his anti-Vietnam War stance and his habits of representing scumbags like Slobodan Milosevic and Charles Taylor of Liberia than his time as LBJ's AG.

    DVD Steals & Deals

HUGE deal here- At Wal-Mart, you can get Wrestling Gold volumes 1-5 for $15. This is a GREAT set because it's several hours of Memphis wrestling and Southwestern Championship Wrestling (Joe Blanchard's promotion) with commentary by Da Meltz and Jim Cornette. There's also some really good matches in there, too, including the Rock And Roll Express vs. Randy Savage and Lanny Poffo.

    Electoral Vote Predictor 2004.

I think the only things anyone can count on are that "flyover country" (basically the entire Great Plains, Texas, and everything in the South but Florida) are locks for Bush and that Illinois, California, and about 75% of New England are locks for Kerry. Anything else is speculative because of the weirdness of the polls and the 4% margin of error they have.

Bored College Football Pick 'Em Contest - Week 7

As an easier way to make sense of the BCS numbers, could we please get a list of the percentages picked correctly for each team? That could be used to determine how big of a gap there is between Edwin at the top and someone like Harley Quinn near the bottom.

Bored College Football Pick 'Em Contest - Week 7

The only person's strength of schedule that is hurt is by the team that forfeited so no it has no effect on anyone else. On the other question remember the strength of schedule is based solely on how your opponent picked that week and not what they did the rest of the season. I did it this way because unlike real football here we have no control over what our opponent does and it's irrelevent what your opponent does other weeks. I'll look into what Mike's and iggy's ranking would have been without the forfeit but Teke you're only #13 in correct picks so you have had some luck in being 5-2. Gert has been #1 in picking games I think almost the entire contest but he only has a 4-3 record to show for it. If Gert hadn't been late submitting his picks several times, he'd probably have won more games. He put himself at a disadvantage this week by missing the early games and, thus, costing himself easy points.

Bored College Football Pick 'Em Contest - Week 7

Hell, I've beaten you too and am well beneath you in the polls, despite a better record. -=Mike That's slightly different... you got fucked because Georgia forfeited a game before you took over. Because of the way that forfeits are handled, it killed your correct choice percentage. You've done a great job since you've taken over but, if you hadn't won all your games since doing so, you'd be near dead last because 1/3 of your BCS score was tanked.

Bored College Football Pick 'Em Contest - Week 7

Anyone else seem to notice that the Big South teams seem to be getting penalized in the Strength Of Schedule column compared to other leagues? (NOTE: The Big Atlantic is getting this too) As an example, I've got a better record (1/3 of BCS total) than UCLA, a team I beat, and have picked better answers than them (1/3 BCS total), but I'm getting ass-raped in Strength Of Schedule while they're getting moved to the top of the list because of it. Is part of the reason why we're suffering due to Georgia forfeiting at least one game before Mike took over the team? Or is it because of the Out Of Conference scheduling being weak through no fault of our own?

Bored College Football Pick 'Em Contest - Week 7

More winners: UVA (Edwin MacPhisto) over Florida State (2Gold) West Virginia (Loaded Glove) over Miami (Spaceman Spiff) due to the tiebreaker USC (Cartman) over Arizona State (Spicy McHaggis) Boston College (HarleyQuinn) over Maryland (MarvinisaLunatic) Auburn (Agent of Oblivion) over Florida (Agent Bond 34) Kent State (J Hawk) over Boise State (dead team / Vern Gagne) UNOFFICIAL winner: Michigan State (Dangerous A) over Minnesota (Vern Gagne) (I think that Dangerous A put together enough enough wins today to overcome the fact that he didn't get his picks in for Miami-Louisville and West Virginia-UCONN) Games still in progress due to Hawaii-UTEP: Washington State (Bravesfan) vs. Stanford (Bored) Syracuse (Canadian Chris) vs. Penn State (therealworldschampion)

This Week in College Football 10/13 - 10/16

I think that Terry Bowden is the best comparison... Terry Bowden went 11-0 and 10-1 with Pat Dye's players (he was also under probation due to recruiting violations under Dye), then went back to the middle of the SEC after that.
