WCW facts, tidbits, and stuff people forgot

Yep, Merchants of Cool was the title. They also showed a few shots of WWF New York but most of the clips they showed when talking about wrestling were WCW.

Songs you hate by artists you like

The Who- Squeeze Box The Beatles- Maxwell Silver Hammer (I'm not sure why- I know it's an intentionally goofy song and it should have some cheese factor for me but I just disdain this song for some reason.) The Rolling Stones cover of "Like A Rolling Stone"- It seemed like they were sick of people telling them "Hey you should cover of that song. It's your name! lol" And they decided to record one out of spite.

    Lame Franchises You'd Re-Invent...

I'm going to say Cannonball Run. The first series was shitty (And so would the remake probably) but man I love the premise of it. It'd just be an excuse to show funny car chases and have a shitload of celebrities do appearences. Some of the team ideas I had; Owen Wilson/Ben Stiller Will Ferrell/ Steve Carrell A bunch of hot lingerie models piled into a car Jackie Chan/Jet Li as a father/son pair of karate instructors The token black guys (I'll go with Eddie Griffith and Faizon Love. Gotta have one skinny and one overweight) Jon Favereau and Vince Vaughn Oh man the possibilities are endless

I just bought tickets for a Smackdown house show on June 17th. It's going to be my first WWE show since July of 2002 (Coincidentally enough, a Smackdown house show with a main event of Kurt Angle Vs Edge). I hope I didn't waste $20 on my cheap seat. This is the card from WWE.com; Triple Threat Match World Heavyweight Championship Rey Mysterio vs. JBL vs. Kurt Angle Undertaker vs. The Great Khali (w/Daivari) Chris Benoit vs. Mark Henry Lashley vs. Booker T (w/Sharmell) Six Person Tag Team Match MNM vs. Paul London & Brian Kendrick & Jillian Hall WWE Cruiserweight Championship Gregory Helms vs. Super Crazy Matt Hardy vs. Finlay Scotty 2 Hotty & Funaki vs. The Gyminis (w/Simon Dean) Also featuring: Ken Kennedy and more! Everything on the card looks decent but unspectacular. With the obvious exception of Khali Vs Undertaker which should be craptacular. It should be interesting to see whether Benoit can carry Marc Henry to a semi-watchable match.

The Worst Wrestling Show of All-Time

Another pay per view I really hated, not sure if it's been mentioned or not in this thread, is Survivor Series 99. Not necessarily the worst pay per view, but man WWF was in a slump for a brief point after Russo left (Truth be told, they weren't doing that well at any point in 99). Honestly, I can't remember anything about that show except for The Big Show winning the WWF World title and Austin getting run over. I've blocked it out cause I disliked it so much. Luckily, things got better pretty quickly thereafter for WWF.

I was surpirsed by that too. But I imagine Vince wasn't warm to letting intellectuals showcase his company on a documentary that was basically about how corporations corrupt today's teenagers. WCW, on the other hand, was probably looking for any publicity they might be able to get.

    The Old School questions thread

How did WCW justify, storyline wise, stripping Chris Benoit of the WCW World title? I remember Arn Anderson (the guest referee of the Benoit/Sid match where Benoit won the title) saying something about someone's foot being on the rope when Benoit had Sid in the Crossface. But I can't remember if it was Sid's foot or Benoit's foot and if they ever brought that rule up before or since.

The Worst Wrestling Show of All-Time

I really hate Great American Bash 99. The best match is Chris Benoit and Saturn Vs Kanyon and DDP and that match is like **1/4. It also included Sting getting "mauled" by a bunch of dogs and the return of Sid.

WCW facts, tidbits, and stuff people forgot

I was watching a PBS Frontline documentary from 2000/2001ish in my history class on how corporations market to teenagers and they spent a good five or so minutes talking about how wrestling is one of the highest rated shows amongst males 18-24. And they went to a WCW Thunder taping and they showed clips of a couple of matches and interviewed Chavo Guerrero Jr and Lash LeRoux about what makes wrestling so popular. Earlier in the episode they talked about how ICP was an example of successful underground marketing to teenagers and in the epilogue they talked about how they signed with a major record label and they also signed with WCW. Then they proceeded to show a clip of "That 70's Guy" Mike Awesome throwing one of the ICP off his bus and through a table. I just found it weird that I saw WCW clips on a PBS Documentary.

    Taking a Crap At Work

Eh depends on how clean the restroom is. I went to a Paul Rodgers/Kansas concert at the "lovely" Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in the metropolis of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire in 2003 and the bathrooms were so scuzzy. Their was a no smoking rule at the venue per the artists requests so there were a bunch of people loitering in the bathroom smoking and some guy was yelling at me "HEY BUDDY TAKING A SHIT? COME ON, YOU'RE TAKING UP SMOKING ROOM!" Needless to say, I held it until after the show when I went into the conveniently nearby Atlantic Ocean.

    Book recommendations

I took it today and the DBQ was on the women's rights movement between after the Revolutionary War and before the Civil War. I let out an audible groan when I saw it and everybody else in the class either laughed at me or looked at me in disgust. I hope nobody from the College Board browses these forums or they might discard my test

What was the biggest crowd pop EVER?

Don't know if this was mentioned but Virgil winning the Million Dollar Belt at SummerSlam 91 got a surprisingly huge pop.

Ringo Starr and The All Star Band are in Boston, the night that I'm going to a Red Sox day game at Fenway. This year's line up includes Richard Marx, Billy Squier, Sheila E, Edgar Winter and Rod Argent. I'm not sure exactly why but I'd definitely see that show for $20-$30. Of course, Ringo is probably going to fuck everyone over with high ticket prices. Pfft, just because you sang Octopus Garden, Back Off Bugaloo, and Yellow Submarine and hired a bunch of cheesy 70s and 80s pop stars to be your backing band doesn't mean you can charge me $75 for a ticket!

Most forgettable stint in a promotion

Skinner was around from like October/November of 91 to like March of 93. Definitely not that forgettable. I mean he didn't have that many (maybe not even a single) angles with him, but he had a kickass match against Bret Hart at This Tuesday In Texas and he was around long enough to be in a WrestleMania match (Granted, he was squashed in under a minute by Owen Hart). Hell, for some reason, I remember a really rare heel-heel match in early 93 where Shawn Michaels defended the Intercontinental title against Skinner and Skinner played the babyface role. Am I crazy or did this match actually happen?

    TNA's first house this March?

I read somewhere that the arena they held the house show in holds 4,500. So it would be about 80% + filled. That's pretty good for TNA. Hell, can you remember the last time an arena was at 80% capacity for a WWE house show (not including overseas shows)?

    Energy Drinks

Yeah, it's pretty much the same exact drink. I say after trying it a few time, it's a bit more sour, but I've heard from a few people that it's the same exact drink.

Dark Matches you'd like to have seen

WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - June 25, 2001 (13,763; sell out) Guido Maritato & Tony Mamaluke defeated Danny Doring & Roadkill The FBI Vs Doring and Roadkill in WWF, just for the novelty of it. The next night; WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - June 26, 2001 (11,772; sell out) Dean Malenko defeated Taka Michinoku That was kind of a dream match for me as a mark back in 98, one of WCW's top cruiserweights Vs one of WWF's. This had to be one of the Iceman's last matches to boot. WWF @ Tacoma, WA - Tacoma Dome - July 3, 2001 Essa Rios pinned Christopher Daniels at 4:18 with a moonsault WWF @ Omaha, NE - Civic Center - October 23, 2001 Chuck Palumbo pinned Randy Orton with the Jungle Kick Billy Gunn pinned Brock Lesnar with the Fameasser Two future WWE champs job to Billy and Chuck. WWF @ Bushkill, PA - Fernwood Resort - January 31, 1994 (1,600; sell out) Bret Hart defeated Shawn Michaels (w/ Diesel) after Earthquake came out to counter Diesel's interference (Earthquake's surprise return after a year absence) Earthquake and Bret Hart=Best Friends Forever. WWF @ Newark, DE - Bob Carpenter Center - December 14, 1994 (4,600; heavily papered) WWF World Champion Diesel defeated Bob Backlund For some reason I'd curious to see a Diesel-Backland match that lasted longer than eight seconds.

I liked that song, although I have not heard anything else by Evan and Jaron. I saw Evan and Jaron live on one of those big Jingle Ball concerts, the local pop station put on at the local hockey arena back in December of 2000 I think. They weren't bad but they ended their mini set with an atrocious acoustic blues cover of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long that had all of the middle aged guys who brought their daughters, groaning in disgust.
