    Aronofsky's "The Wrestler"

I feel sort of the same way...it's kind of hypocritical considering the movie is basically about how the wrestling industry uses up and spits out talent. At the same time, as I've said, I would probably mark out if he showed up as The Ram!

FOX Sunday Night 08/09 - now in HD!

I watched a couple of newish episodes last Sunday with Pops Kamala. I've got to say even though this isn't a very popular opinion 'round these parts, they weren't bad. Maybe they've started to come around since the movie (which even most of the curmodgeons seemed to like) Certainly better than most network comedies (not saying much) and significantly better than the show was five or six years ago (again not saying much). Part of me thinks that it doesn't matter how good current day The Simpsons is, its become such an institution that a significant portion of the fans will reject it because its not as good as it once was. Now they're right, it isn't a tenth as good as it was in its heyday (Season 4 through 9 IMHO) but with a few notable exceptions, I've always vehemently disagreed with the "Current Simpsons is the worst shit ever!" crowd.

    Monday Night Wars

cabbage! cabbage! cabbage! I don't know about bedtimes for all y'all when you were wee TSMers and I guess it varies but I'm assuming there was a good percentage of the 6-11 crowd that WWF was marketing to at this period that didn't get to stay up till 10 P.M. on a Monday.

    Old School Royal Rumble Roundtable

To be fair, I cut out some of MilleniumMan and Bob Barron's comments as well.

    The Old School questions thread

I vaguely recall this being answered before somewhere on the board but I'll ask again. Why did Jim Neidhart leave WWF in early '92? The New Foundation seemed like they were going places!

TSM Wrestling Spotlight: The Big Show

Yeah, I think Lushus put it best the biggest problem with The Big Show's career in WWE and to a lesser extent, WCW has been how inconsistent his character has been booked. Is he an unstoppable monster? A gentle giant? A big pussy? A big goof? I'm sure he'd be able to do all of these to some degree (and has) but just as he gets comfortable in one role, it gets changed.

Can't believe barbecued baked beans hasn't been mentioned. One of my favorite side dishes at BBQ restaurants.

    Aronofsky's "The Wrestler"

Saw this today. Really good...sort of a one performance movie...not to say that the other performances are bad by any stretch of the imagination, Rourke just OWNS the movie. The only parts that dragged were the parts where he was trying to make up with his daughter. I saw this at a sold out, tiny ass arthouse theater. Like a few others have said, the people in the audience were just in bewildered by the scene with Necro Butcher. Necro also got quite a few laughs from the audience in the little scene before the match. Oh and did anyone else hear that Vince has changed his mind on the movie (now that its rolling in the awards) and wants to have Mickey Rourke show up at WrestleMania XXV. Not sure how I feel about that. Part of me thinks it'd absolutely terrible in every way imaginable...the other part of me would mark out like crazy if The Ram made a run-in.

Things that Amuse or Please You

Making up long, overly elaborate comedic situations with friends that are completely hilarious to you and absolutely no one else. Incidentally, a thing that angers me is being told these stories by a couple of giggling doofuses!

    Your 10 Favorite Albums

I know for certain, there was one notable poster here that didn't like Thin White Duke era Bowie and I probably mistakenly took that poster as the voice of the TSM Music Folder's conscience. I think it was Inc for the record.

    Your 10 Favorite Albums

In no particular order...For some reason, the desert island disc I made a week ago is a bit different from this one. And its not all based on my tastes changing rapidly. David Bowie- Station to Station ( I know coked up, blue eyed soul period Bowie isn't very popular on here but it's my favorite era of his) The Beatles- Revolver The Beatles- Abbey Road Bryan Ferry- These Foolish Things Michael Jackson- Off The Wall (Six months ago, it was Thriller. I've changed my mind though my preference is, has, and always will be a toss up) Fountains of Wayne- Fountains of Wayne Ben Folds Five- Ben Folds Five The Beach Boys- Wild Honey The Beach Boys- Sunflower Bruce Springsteen- The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle (Thanks to Czech wherever he is for recommending me this one)

    Monday Night Wars

Here's my somewhat uneducated guess, since WWF was really geared to the kiddies in '93, '94, and '95 and RAW was on a weeknight, I figured they put the marquee match on first so younger kids who had to wake up early for school could watch it. I know this from experience as Mom and Pops Kamala used to only let me watch the first half hour of the show before being sent to bed.

    TSM Profile: Marc Mero

I hadn't thought about Mero in a while. But his name came up in a Royal Rumble roundtable that will be up shortly and I just felt like waxing nostalgiac about him. While I would never call him one of my favorites, he was consistantly entertaining. Even if he was a bit of a Randy Savage knockoff, there are worse people to emulate...and really that was only readily apparent during his later WWF heel run. Questions 1. In the long run, do you think Sable and his ensuing feud with her (the in-ring one) helped or hurt his career? Well ya see, his feud with Sable is kind of like Dusty Rhodes' polka dot days. Yeah, he probably made a lot of money and it was over but in the long run, it was kind of the death knell of his career. Before it, he was a solid mid-carder. Probably not on his way to the main event but a solid worker who'd occasionally feud with an upper mid-carder or main eventer. After the feud with Sable, he was pretty much a comedy wrestler for the rest of his career. Fortunately, the rest of his career was only a couple months in WWF and cups of coffee with XWF and TNA. 2. Let's play the "What if" card. What if Marc Mero wasn't plagued with consistant injury problems through out his WWF stint? Would he have reached similar heights as the men he had joined WWF alongside; Mankind and Mick Foley (remember Mero was perhaps the most hyped of the three when they entered the company in the first part of '96)? Would he have maintained the mid-card position he had in late '96/early '97? Papacita basically stole my answer. At the time, he went down with a torn ligament in early '97, it seemed like they had decent sized plans for Mero. Like I said, I don't think he would have had main event runs like Foley and Austin but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a couple of more Intercontinental title runs and spent some time in the upper mid-card. I think he would have a similar career trajectory to Jeff Jarrett's second runs in WWF and WCW. Like Papacita said, I think he might've eclipsed in notoriety by Sable but not to the extent that he did in real life. 3. What was best; the WCW run as Johnny B. Badd or the WWF run as Wild Man/Marvelous Marc Mero? I'm assuming no one will consider his XWF or TNA runs the highlight of his career. In-ring work, I think his WCW run gets the slight edge. But in terms of overall entertainment, I think the WWF run wins out. His run as "Marvelous" Marc Mero started off great and I enjoyed his feuds with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Steve Austin. It's funny...looking back on it, Marc Mero feuded with some of the biggest names in wrestling of the '90s if not all time; Triple H, Steve Austin, Diamond Dallas Page, Mick Foley. But he feuded with them all two or three years before they became big names (with the exception of Austin). Not sure what that says about him. 4. In twenty years, what will he be best remembered for? His in-ring career or his role as a straight shooting media gadfly (and the list of guys he wrestled who died) after the Benoit murders-suicide? I agree with everybody else. If he's remembered at all, it'll be as Sable's husband. Which is too bad because he was a rock solid worker for the majority of his career. 5. Now the obligatory final question; Favorite matches, moments, etc. My favorite moment was him beating Farooq in the Intercontinental title tournament finals. For some reason, this was a massive upset to me. I remember marking out like crazy when that happened. Close second is that wildly entertaining battle royal that was on Shotgun in September/October of '98 that was basically The Rock and a bunch of lower mid-card and job guys. I remember Mero standing outside of the ring for half of the match heeling it up and when he finally entered, the audience gave him a huge pop for some reason. Oh, I hate Vince Russo worked shoot type angles but I loved it when "Marvelous" Marc Mero berated Salvatore Sincere before they were supposed to face off on RAW and kept saying that his name wasn't Salvatore Sincere, it was Tom Brandi! Shocking stuff for a mark. Of course, all of this somehow led to Salvatore Sincere pulling off the countout win. I guess that night my love for "jobber upsets name guy" angles overrode my hatred of worked shoot angles.

    TSM FAQ

Pretty much self explanatory... I think. I've never been invited. It's a semi-secret message board featuring Czech, Inc, Kinetic, AoO, Milky, and other members of the TSM Elite. Think of it as The TSM Bohemian Grove. Shit goes down there. They determine who will be Poster of The Year and shit like that.

Why the hell are you up at 5 A.M. then, ya slacker? Either I'm going to have to get bombed at like 5 P.M. or you're going to have to get bombed late or something. I don't think I could outdual KOAB in a Clash of The Drunks but I have a feeling I might be able to take a drunken Glasscock or a energy drink ridden Marvin.

Never seen it, should I? oh no, sir...no no NO I sort of like Cruising. Can see why it's become a minor camp classic over the years. It's probably not EHME's cup of tea to say the least.

    Oscar Nominations Thread

I thought Hoop Dreams wasn't nominated because it originally appeared on PBS or was on PBS very shortly after it premiered in theaters. Kind of similar as to why Fahrenheit 9/11 wasn't nominated because Michael Moore put it on PPV the night before the election.

So someone tells me that "The Wrestler" wasn't nominated because it's being released as a bonus track on Bruce's next album....que?

    Oscar Nominations Thread

Jingus referenced it earlier. Another observation- while I generally like 90% of the documentaries nominated for Best Documentary but they clearly have a jones for ultra serious ones. It seems rare that documentaries with a humorous bent get nominated unless they're Michael Moore movies. American Movie and The King of Kong so should have gotten nominated in their respective years but didn't.
