The Smart Marks Greatest Song of the 60s Tournament
King Kamala replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Music
You know what the problem with this tournament is? It was voted by the general population of TSM. You know as much as I like to crow about the lack of posters actively participating in the music folder, it's the results of a tournament like this that makes me realize why it's probably better off that it's kind of inclusive for the most part. But I insure you the Greatest Songs of the '90s I plan on running will far surpass this one! -
I suggest he does kids movie scores ala Randy Newman (I think you suggested this earlier, Czech). Either that or do a nostalgia reunion tour with Ben Folds Five. I think he's got to strike while the iron is hot for '90s nostalgia. I'm sure he still does a damn good live show though. I'd put a Ben Folds show I went to on the night of the '06 NCAA Men's Basketball Finals in Orono, Maine in the upper-echelon of great concerts I've been to.

Ranking Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five 1. Ben Folds Five 2. Whatever and Ever Amen 3. Rockin' The Suburbs 4. The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner (Really the Top 4 are interchangable. For a while I thought this was more of an interesting misfire but the more I listen to it over the years, the more I like it) 5. Supersunnyspeedgraphic, The LP 6. Songs For Silverman 7. Way To Normal If we're ranking live albums and outtakes albums, I'd put Ben Folds Live at #3, above Reinhold Messner and RTS but below the first two albums.. I'd put Naked Baby Photos above the last two solo albums but below Supersunnyspeedgraphic. I'm not sure where I'd put Songs for Goldfish or Fear of Pop as I haven't listened to either more than a few times.

What did/do your parents think of wrestling?
King Kamala replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
Both of my parents dislike it but I wouldn't say they hate it. They've never stopped me from watching and bought me wrestling crap for birthdays and Christmas. Dad took me to shows, even though as we grew older, he became more vocal about not liking having to take me and my brother to shows. Though that may have just been him thinking we were "too old" to be still into wrestling. I remember when he took us to indy shows at the local armory, he would just sit in the car and listen to Celtics and Red Sox games on the radio for most of the show, checking in about once every half hour to see we hadn't been kidnapped. But yeah I think my dad realizes that he likes too much other goofy shit to really give me too much guff about still liking wrestling. Mom has never said much about it but she was always vocal about how she wouldn't take us to shows if Dad couldn't attend. As for other relatives, my uncle was a casual fan for a while around the InVasion. I remember we talked about it briefly one family gathering. His favorite was Christian for some reason. I remember another uncle sat down and watched a couple matches when me and my brother were watching WCW Worldwide one afternoon at my grandmother's house and he seemed mildly impressed. My grandmother didn't seem to like it all that much and would occasionally complain when me and my brother would watch Superstars or Worldwide at her house but again she never stopped us from watching it. Nothing else from other relatives other than my grandfather once mentioning how one of his siblings was a big fan of Haystack Calhoun back in the day. -

I remember The Wall and Berlyn having a feud for about a half second, ending with The Wall squashing Berlyn on Thunder. But I don't remember why exactly they broke up. Fake edit- Looked it up on DDTDigest...dumbass Russo booking. Anyways to elaborate, The Wall was wrestling Vampiro on the episode of Nitro the night after Mayhem. During the match, for whatever reason Berlyn hit Vampiro with a chair while The Wall had him in a chokeslam, causing Vampiro to get the DQ win. Understandably, The Wall got pissed and wouldn't let Berlyn leave the ring so Berlyn slapped him. Thus ending one of the most forgettable duos in wrestling history. I don't know who was supposed to be the babyface but Berlyn disappeared shortly thereafter and returned as Das Wunderkind six months or so later and The Wall would go on to greater things...sort of.

Am I the only guy who enjoys Predator 2? Yeah it isn't nearly as good as the original and Danny Glover essentially plays Murtagh again and setting it in 1997 was really a dumb idea (Did they think we'd advance that much in the 5-6 years after they made that movie?) but it's got wacky Busey attacks and The Predator kicking ass and taking names! Somebody made fun of me last time I mentioned liking it . Make fun of me for liking Bubble Boy or Pootie Tang but not Predator 2

Abortion Fest '08 (or, Thanksgiving with relatives)
King Kamala commented on Gary Floyd's blog entry in How To Vibrate
I went out to eat and watched the first two Planet of The Apes movies. Can't see how a Thanksgiving could possibly get better than that. I never remember arguments on either side of my family RE: politics. Doesn't help that both sides are split about 50/50 between conservatives and liberals. We're all smart enough to realize that it'd probably get ugly if it were brought up. We're lucky I guess. -
Yeah I'd put Rocky Balboa above II (which is really just a retread of the first one) and V but below I, III, and IV. Though quality-wise, it's probably the second best behind the original. And I give III the slight edge over IV because he manages to beat Mr. T and Hulk Hogan. And it contains possibly the most hilariously homoerotic scene in cinema history.

Boy Beneath The Planet of The Apes is really dragged down by those annoying mutants. As a kid, I never released that the movie was just a giant allegory for the Vietnam War. Things get pretty good though when Heston finally shows up at the end and they start kicking some mutant and ape ass. Incidentally, another film series of my youth with five installments (yeah I know there are six now but they were only rerunning the first five), the Rocky series was being played on Versus. Amusingly enough, my brother and I agreed that we'd rank the installments of both series' in the same order; 1. The first obviously 2. III and Escape 3. IV and Conquest 4. II and Beneath 5. V and Battle

Oh man, Fox Movie Channel is running The Planet of The Apes series all weekend long (Channel of The Apes!) and is running some old school featurettes and wacky commercials with the apes running over Twentieth Century Fox studio. Best Thanksgiving ever!

This quote followed "....assuming I'm running it." Fuck it, I'll run it. Hey feel free to take your old position back. I don't care. I only did it because you put me on the spot, you jerk!
-
What? I don't remember volunteering for your position! Well I'll be busy roughly for the next two and a half weeks finishing up the semester but I imagine I'll have a boatload of free time afterward and thus I guess I'll take over the mantle of draft head unless someone else wants to do so. I think it should be a bit smaller in terms of draftees to be honest, 10-12 would be fine with 10 picks each. It seems like a lot of people are in the same boat as me RE: Not caring too much for later episodes.
-
Ah what the hell? I'll do it. The fact that I haven't watched more than a handful of new episodes in the past five years or so may come back to haunt me though in later rounds. Ah well....can always catch up on Sidereel.

The Things That Anger You Thread.

Really...just a tad extreme. Damn her! -
I'm too lazy to search but I don't think my favorite of the guest stars of the baseball episode has been picked... ...Wade Boggs! "LORD PALMERSTON!" "PITT THE ELDER!" Fuck, any of the guest stars on the episode could have been drafted and it would have been a great pick. Fun fact: Canseco doesn't like to talk about his guest appearance on that episode. What a dope!

He hadn't called his girlfriend in a couple of days and she was concerned. Really just a false alarm. I guess that's another thing. It'd be one thing if he did some sort of cool crime but no it's just a false alarm because he hasn't called the ol' girlfriend. I stayed up till 5 A.M. for that. Pshaw. -
I'm 99.9% sure he wasn't picked but I think even though he's overshadowed by Jon Lovitz's other guest appearances, Lllewellyn Sinclair would have certainly been draft worthy. "I'm not an easy man to work with. While directing "Hats Off to Chanukkah", I reduced more than one cast member to tears. Was I expecting too much from fourth graders? The review 'Play enjoyed by all' *holds up elementary school newspaper with said headline" says it all.

I was waken up by a pair of state troopers at about 1:30 this morning! Damn them! They were looking for my roommate! Damn him! I have an eight thirty class tomorrow! Damn my poor scheduling! The weather forecast is for a wintry mix! Damn Mother Nature! -
Another unmentioned undraftee I probably would have picked if I were drafting... George Plimpton

Boy, having only one channel sucks...especially when you can't sleep at 3 A.M. on a Tuesday. I'm left watching some weird ass court show with Kato Kaelin as the reporter. Dammit! Shouldn't World News Now be on? Why is Kato Kaelin still working anyways? Didn't his fifteen minutes pass about twelve years ago?

Well- it's time for this week's Let's Talk About... and mentioning the movie in another thread brought this subject to mind. No Holds Barred was the first starring role in Hulk Hogan's distinguished acting career and introduced the world to future character actor, Tom "Tiny" Lister. In the movie, Hulk Hogan in an incredible stretch of his acting abilities plays All American, good guy WWF World Champion, Rip who battles evil rival cable network head, Brell and his number one wrestling star, the unibrowed monster. Now in between there's an attempted rape, some pie fights, and Hulk making an evil limo driver crap his pants simply by growling at him. Now for whatever reason I didn't see this one until around '99/'00ish and I was somewhat smartened up. And man, looking back on it...I'd have to say this was when The Hulkster jumped the shark. You can't get much bigger than being pegged to star in your own Hollywood picture and they blew it big time. Anybody who isn't a wrestling fan would probably find this movie cliche ridden and mediocre at best and laughably bad at worst. And as evidenced by the box office grosses of Ready To Rumble and this, the number of wrestling fans who will see just any wrestling movie, no matter how crappy isn't all of that big of an audience. Worst of all though for wrestling fans was the ensuing feud between Hulk Hogan and Zeus. Now this feud was perhaps one of the biggest insults to wrestling fans' intelligence. It's one thing for us to believe that wrestling is real but it's another to believe that the events of that movie were somewhat grounded in reality and that Zeus was so upset by his loss in that movie that he'd come to WWF to extract revenge on The Hulkster. Worst of all, the lumbering oaf who couldn't really do much outside of a choke was all of a sudden the #1 heel in the WWF. This was the first real major dud opponent for Hulk Hogan. Even Vince seemed to realize this and cut the feud short before we could see Hulk and Zeus' epic one-on-one rematch. A couple of fun facts: Lugwrench Perkins, one of Zeus' opponents, was played by Jeep Swanson who would go on team up again with Zeus (newly rechristened as Z-Gangsta) and 2/3rds of the heels on WCW's roster at the time to take out Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. Watch out for former AWA World Champion, Stan Hansen as one of the participants of Battle of The Tough Guys. Not only is this the first starring role for Hulk Hogan but the first film produced by the WWF. Unfortunately, this would probably rank amongst each of their's best work. And now some clips! No Holds Barred: The Music Video Best scene in the movie The Match Part 1 The Match Part 2 And for no good reason, The Hulkster's cameo in Gremlins 2. Still one of my favorite roles by a wrestler in a movie.

I just picked up tickets to see Fountains of Wayne do an acoustic show at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA on February 28th. Really curious to see this. I love Fountains of Wayne and they'll be playing some new songs but it doesn't seem like most of their songs would lend themselves to acoustic versions but I guess we'll see. I love band and I like the venue so I'm there.

Oh man Alien Vs Predator...now that was a sack of shit. I love Alien (well the first two anyways) and I love The Predator so I figured it couldn't be too bad but man was I wrong. I was (still sort of am) mildly tempted to see the sequel but fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
