Aw man...sounds even better than I imagined.

    Weekend Box Office Report

Give me the details, Barron. I'm extremely jealous! And this movie sounds incredibly similar to America's Heart and Soul, the documentary Disney put out as a response to Fahrenheit 9/11. Of course that was a documentary and did not feature The White Shadow, Mr. Belding, and Ruthie from Seventh Heaven

Thanks for that astute observation, Deon. Bob- I would so see Proud American in theaters if it wasn't for the fact that the nearest theater playing it is a good ninety minutes away and I don't have a car right now.

And here's a trailer! Wow, I can't believe they expected people to pay money to watch what looks like an afterschool special. What a country!

    Weekend Box Office Report

*looks up movie on IMDb* Wow...wow...that sounds awful. Proudly boasts the fact that Wal Mart helped fund it and has a vignette about the founding of the chain. Yakov Smirnoff in a cameo as himself. Mr. Belding and The White Shadow make appearances. I'm going to add this to my NetFlix queue the minute it comes out on DVD! New York Times review

    Weekend Box Office Report

Color me surprised that Burn After Reading got #1 as well. Yes, it had Clooney, Pitt, and the directors of last year's Best Picture (and a solid trailer). But as Bob pointed out, Clooney and Pitt are huge stars but not exactly huge box office draws (if that makes sense) and it's not like Coen Brothers movies pack 'em in either.

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

Oh yeah- they were The Arachnoids for a spell in late '96. I want to say it was after their one-shot Sisters of Mercy gimmick and before The Headbangers (though it could have been both). I remember one of them had a surprisingly semi-competitive match against Sid during his brief WWF World title reign on Superstars. I remember they tried to pull off the old switcheroo trick that tag teams where both members of the team look like tend to do. Edit- Ack! A quick check on wikipedia reveals that it was actually one of The Grimm Twins that had the semi-competitive match with Sid on an episode of Superstars. Was confusing my bald tag teams. But I do maintain that The Headbangers started out as The Spiders in the late Fall of '96.

Armchair Bookers:What if Hogan never went to WCW?

I'll take what happens to Hogan. I think he still drops the belt to Yokozuna and takes a bit of a break before returning as a special attraction- wrestling twice or so a year on major PPVs. I could see him having extended feuds with Giant Gonzalez (*shudders*), Diesel, and Bam Bam Bigelow. Eventually though, he comes back full-time as a heel in a similar role to Hollywood Hogan in WCW and faces off with whoever the top babyfaces are. After that runs its course in three or four years, he turns back face and goes back to his part time special attraction role.

Hey I saw Czech dissed Graceland on the other page. Fuck you Czechers! Maybe it's the forty year old man in me but that's one of my all-time favorites!

Help Me Expand My Wrestling Repertoire

Some essential shows that readily available on DVD (this is assuming you guys got the WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble Anthologies in the U.K.) WrestleMania III (There really isn't any great wrestling outside of Steamboat-Savage but it's a fun card from top to bottom) WrestleMania VIII (Another really fun card. The last of the old school WrestleManias) WrestleMania X (If you want to see more Bret Hart- this is the show for you. Plus you've got the famous ladder match and an appearance by Burt Reynolds!) WrestleMania XIV (An iconic show. Again maybe not one of the greatest shows-workrate wise but a fun card from top to bottom. Perhaps the peak of the Attitude era) SummerSlam '92 (Not sure if you'd have seen this- seeing how it's the biggest wrestling show to ever take place in the U.K. Good card, fantastic atmosphere) SummerSlam '98 (Another iconic show from The Attitude days. Probably my personal favorite from the era. Great MSG crowd) Royal Rumble '92 (You could probably ditch the mostly forgettable undercard and just watch The Rumble itself, which is one of the most entertaining matches I've ever seen)

Here's an Arctic Monkeys query that just went nowhere.

Vampire Weekend was a bad example for a band that this folder's regulars really like. Yeah, there are a couple people who sort of like them but I'd say the majority of our reactions to them range between indifference to outright hatred.

Here's an Arctic Monkeys query that just went nowhere.

I'm not sure what the hell I was talking about. I was kind of drunk when I wrote that post. I will say that yes I still think The Beach Boys are awesome (I always thought the folder's consensus was that they were wildly overrated- at least Pet Sounds. And that and the songs about cars and surfing is the extent of most people's knowledge.)

I tell you what- it's an open secret that the hipsters have scared most everybody from the music folder. There a lot of people on this board who have just as shitty (or perhaps even more shittier) of music taste as me or Mik but are afraid to face the wrath of Czech or Chilly Willy. Incadenza scared a lot of people off too. The only ones who aren't intimidated are the metalheads and some of the hip hop fans. Perhaps it's for the better- cause I certainly don't want Nickelback threads clogging up this folder but still I'd like to be able to discuss the late '60s albums of The Beach Boys without facing ridicule!

    WWF Survivor Series 1992

One of the first tapes I remember renting so obviously I would have a lot of fondness for it even if it weren't that good. Surprisingly, this card does hold up. Even the crap is relatively short (Yokozuna/Virgil) and/or entertaining (Kamala/Taker, Bossman/Nailz). I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said. Though I must say that the show ending with Bret Hart celebrating a successful title defense with Santa has always been kind of surreal. That came across as corny even to a six year old King Kamala.

    The OAO WWE DVD Thread

Yeah, I'm not sure how they could justify saying Savage's career "self destructed". OK, he sucked during the last two years or so of his WCW run but he was still over and frequently main eventing. How did he self-destruct? By no-showing that WWA PPV? By recording a terrible rap album? I mean he seems pretty content in retirement and has a semi-successful career as a voice actor. I guess you could play up the fact that he was a jerk to Elizabeth when they were married but that'd probably be in poor taste considering the whole Roots Genoa incident.

Stars from the 90's the faded too soon

I'm going to have to disagree with DDP. While he never reached the same heights he did in '97-'98 and his heel turn in '99 did set him back a bit, he was still a borderline main event guy until the bitter end of WCW. I'm also going to disagree with Goldberg. Yeah, he was damaged goods but it wasn't his own doing. It was WCW's dumbfuck booking that did him in. Again a stupid heel turn really hurt him but even in the end, he was the most over babyface in WCW. Hell, he could come back today to WWE or TNA and get over huge if booked right.
  20. The Crash TV series trailer I mentioned earlier. Looks like it has the subtlety of a jackhammer. Dennis Hopper still kills me in this. Why the hell is he doing a Starz original series?

    Aronofsky's "The Wrestler"

Another thing about Night and The City is I wouldn't necessarily call it a wrestling film. Maybe it's because it's too good to get lumped in with every other film about wrestling but I've always thought of it as a film noir with wrestling as a vocal plot point. Now it appears that with this one, there's no doubt over whether or not it's a wrestling film. I've been waiting for someone to make a film like this for years and you can't really do much better casting than Mickey Rourke in the lead. On the Wrestling Classics board, The Blue Meanie (who has a small part in this) said that Rourke's character is loosely based on Jake Roberts in Beyond The Mat

WWE General Discussion - September 2008

Completely unrelated Hector Garza note but according to his wikipedia article, he tore his scrotum during a match with Psychosis on an episode of Thunder in February '99. Even if that isn't true- that's funny. And if it is- that is hardcore. Mick Foley and Terry Funk have had a shitload of injuries but have ever tore their scrotums?
  24. I don't know. I'd much rather have that than a straight up remake without Campbell or Raimi. And let's face it, neither one of them are going to have much involvement with a remake.
  25. Evil Dead: The Musical had a successful Off-Broadway run about two years ago. I mean it's Evil Dead so its obviously tongue in cheek.
