OK- I know it's almost a month old news now but I just realized goldengreek wasn't in the Worst Poster tournament either. IMHO, he may be the worst poster in the WWE folder currently. He should have been nominated if only for the fact that a good portion of his posts are all in caps and he calls people "bro". -
The dead crowd from WrestleMania XV shocked the hell out of me. It's in Philly and it's arguably one of the deadest WM crowds outside of the Trump Plaza ones.

Someone mentioned this board not having a CTDWAT. Anyhoo, I'm doing research for a thesis paper and was looking through the archives of the local newspaper and found a bizarre, wrestling reference laden article about the 1998 Maine Gubernatorial Election. Interesting how the writer calls the WWF, The Worldwide Wrestling Federation almost twenty years after the name change.. Must have been an old school fan. I might be imagining this, but it seemed on election night that Gov. Angus King was more pumped than usual. He declared to supporters at his victory celebration that Maine isn't going to walk or jog into the next millennium. You can't blame King for being a little loud about himself in the wake of Tuesday's Maine elections. The governor rolled over Republican Jim Longley and Democrat Tom Connolly like Hulk Hogan dispatching a couple of "pencil-necked geeks." In an address to a hastily arranged business group in Bangor Wednesday afternoon, King repeated his "BLAST" our way into the 21st century prediction and put out the word to Washington that he and "The Body" were going to kick some BUTT when the nation's governors convene in Washington on Feb. 20-23 to set the political agenda for the National Governors Association. Full Text (724 words) Copyright Bangor Publishing Company Nov 7, 1998 I might be imagining this, but it seemed on election night that Gov. Angus King was more pumped than usual. He declared to supporters at his victory celebration that Maine isn't going to walk or jog into the next millennium. "We're going to BLAST into the 21st century," said the governor, with emphasis on the word "BLAST." It's gotta be the WWF factor, I said to myself. That's the Worldwide Wrestling Federation. You can't blame King for being a little loud about himself in the wake of Tuesday's Maine elections. The governor rolled over Republican Jim Longley and Democrat Tom Connolly like Hulk Hogan dispatching a couple of "pencil-necked geeks." The combined Republican and Democratic gubernatorial vote was 31 percent. Independent King's total was 59 percent, the best showing ever in a Maine governor's race with more than two candidates. What happened in Maine was just part of the story. Minnesota voters shocked America by electing as their governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura, a real-life former WWF wrestler. The son of Hubert Humphrey, Minnesota's political icon, finished third in that race. In an address to a hastily arranged business group in Bangor Wednesday afternoon, King repeated his "BLAST" our way into the 21st century prediction and put out the word to Washington that he and "The Body" were going to kick some BUTT when the nation's governors convene in Washington on Feb. 20-23 to set the political agenda for the National Governors Association. "The Body" and he, said King, were forming a new tag team. They are going to challenge the establishment governors to "an arm-wrestling contest." It's been 50 years, according to NGA spokeswoman Becky Fleischauer, since a third-party governor served concurrently with another independent. King just missed hooking up with Connecticut's independent Gov. Lowell Weicker in 1994. Weicker retired the year that Maine voters picked King over Democrat Joe Brennan, Republican Susan Collins and Green Party nominee Jonathan Carter. After his Bangor engagement King was sanguine about the election. "It's hard to talk about a {national} trend with only two people," he said. The governor hasn't talked with Ventura yet but says he will hook up with his Minnesota soul mate at the NGA convention. Fleischauer said the media are already is pestering her with questions about The Body. George Walker Bush and Jeb Bush, whose wins in the Texas and Florida governors race may help chart a new course for Republicans, will be the stars when the governors convene in Washington, D.C. There will be, however, a lot of interest in King and Ventura, she speculated. Anyway you look at it, 1998 was an WWF-type election year. At the top of the ticket, Bill "Macho Man" Clinton broke more political ring rules than the NWO (New World Order), the renegade bunch led by "Hollywood Hogan" (the Hulkster gone bad) that's trying to take over Ted Turner's wrestling circuit. The "Oval Office Groper" disgraced himself with Monica Lewinsky. And then, lied to the American people, his cabinet and a federal grand jury. When the polling places closed Tuesday, Clinton had taken down Al D'Amato, the New York Republican who headed the Senate's Watergate investigation; Lauch Faircloth, the North Carolina Republican who is said to have played a role in setting Ken Starr on the first family; and California GOP candidate Matt Fong, who had the audacity to challenge Hillary Clinton's in-law, Sen. Barbara Boxer. The biggest head on Clinton's political pike may be Newt Gingrich, who could be ousted by dispirited Republican House members later this month. It was Gingrich, you may recall, who last summer promised never to make another speech in which he did not denounce the president as a felony waiting to happen. Tuesday's elections may have turned on news stories that fingered the House speaker as the brain behind last-minute television commercials urging voters not to "reward" Clinton for comporting himself like an X-rated Richard Nixon. On Tuesday, Bill Clinton drop kicked Ken Starr's impeachment process out of the ring. The same election put Newt Gingrich on the ropes, pile-drived Faircloth and D'Amato out of the U.S. Senate and returned vote-rich California to the Democratic electoral tent. As Vince McMahon would say, now that was a "November dismember to remember." John S. Day is a Bangor Daily News columnist based in Washington, D.C. His e-mail address is [email protected].

Certainly an album can have more than one unintentional comedy song, especially in the case of a Michael Jackson album. I don't 100% get the Off The Wall > Thriller argument. I will say that the former has higher lows than the latter and the first five tracks off the former are untouchable but I still think Thriller has the higher peaks.
-
or "The Lady In My Life"? At least "The Girl Is Mine" is ripe with unintentional comedy. I have a lot of nostalgia for that one. But it's no "Say Say Say".
-
I think the change from WWF to WWE really was the death knell for the Attitude era, even though everything from X-7 up till then was basically Attitude Lite.
-
Even though I'm a slightly bigger fan of Jacko than Prince's and I consider Thriller to be his best work, I agree with you. There isn't one track on Purple Rain that is less than great. Thriller has the inane "The Girl Is Mine" (If "Say Say Say" were on Thriller, I would pick it. I've always loved that god damn song for some reason) and "The Lady In My Life". In retrospect, a better question would have been Off The Wall or Thriller.

Quoted for truth. That was one of my favorites of last year. I saw Drillbit Taylor today. Surprisingly, I kind of liked it. Maybe it was just because I had really low expectations and it was basically Superbad Jr with a homelesss con-man wandering through but I thought it was a fun throwback to PG/PG-13 80s teen comedies.

Let's Talk About..........The Natural Born Thrillers
King Kamala posted a topic in General Wrestling
Alright, it's time for another edition of our weekly Let's Talk About thread... I know a lot of you probably didn't watch WCW in the second half of the year 2000, but this was an incredibly interesting collection of raw talent. As a semi-mark at the time, I thought these guys would dominate wrestling for the next decade, in particular Sean O'Haire and Mike Sanders. WCW even did fairly decent job (by WCW standards at least) of pushing them as such. On the other hand, these guys were green as hell and they may have been given too much to soon. Then WWF bought out WCW and these guys went nowhere really. It says something when Chuck Palumbo is the most successful member of your stable. And there haven't been many more guys, at least in this decade, with more wasted potential than Sean O'Haire. That guy had a good look, was agile for his size, and his short-lived Devil's Advocate character in WWE is one of my favorite of all time. But he never seemed to go anywhere. I thought for sure he'd have a Worlds title by now but instead he's fat and is doing MMA (rather poorly from what I hear). What are your thoughts on this stable from WCW's dying days? Edit: I realize I was one of a small group of WCW viewers in its dying days so if you're not familiar with the stable itself, feel free to talk about the members' success (or lack thereof) after the stable was disbanded. -

Comments that don't warrant a thread
King Kamala replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
I hate to bump up an old thread but I maintain this folder needs a CTDWAT. And the following comment that doesn't warrant a thread. Anyways, is it just me or has WrestleCrap gone downhill? Or was it not all that funny to begin with and I just liked it because I was a 14 year old who had just smartened up and liked the references to obscure crappy gimmicks? I'd like to think its the former but I can't remember the last time I laughed aloud at something on there. Today's induction is particularly bad. Now I'm not saying that the WrestleMania VII instant replay is undeserving of an induction but in the article RD says and I quote "This fiasco took place at WrestleMania VII, which, by almost all calculations, was one of the worst WrestleManias in history". Huh? Sure it has some shitty stuff on there but I can't think of anybody else who thinks it's anywhere near one of the worst. It just reminded me of the thread edgehead69 made last year where he said that we all can agree WrestleMania XXIII is the worst WrestleMania ever. The point is, my fellow Smart Marks, is don't make contentious statements and try to pass them off as consensus. Or else I'll have to bump up a year old thread. -

Why the hell wasn't this Oldschool fella nominated for the Worst Poster tournament? The guy may be the most oblivious poster we have on this board. And that's saying something since we also have Marvin and Jericholic82. He just seems to come here and create a terrible thread every 2-3 weeks. -
TSM Town Hall: Legacy of a Great Match at Mania
King Kamala replied to Dandy's topic in The WWE Folder
I was going to mention that match but the match with Hogan at Survivor Series '91 really made 'Taker. The match with Roberts cemented it. A match that isn't talked about in terms of someone getting made is the WrestleMania IV battle royal with Bret Hart. Sure, Hart didn't even become a full-time singles wrestler for another three years but it definitely planted the seeds of his solo success and showed who was the leader of the Hart Foundation. -
608. I hate to bump up this thread again after the extensive clean up that Cheech has led over the past day and a half or so but the Benoit debate rearing its ugly head again in the DVD thread (of all places) has forced me to.

Though I have a spot in my heart for all of them (Even Jeff Lynne!). The answer is obviously Dylan. George Harrison is a one album wonder, Tom Petty is more of a singles artist, don't know enough about Orbinson, and ELO has had more than its fair share of tripe. Dylan has at least four undisputed classic albums. I'm not sure if any of the other members have two. Or are we talking just about their work with The Wilburys?

TSM Town Hall: Legacy of a Great Match at Mania
King Kamala replied to Dandy's topic in The WWE Folder
1. Which wrestler has had the most memorable Mania matches for you? Without a doubt, it's Shawn Michaels. Correct me if I'm wrong but IMO, he's the only guy who's wrestled at a significant amount of Manias that hasn't had a single bad match at one of them. In fact, there isn't a match he's had there that wasn't at least pretty good. Plus he's been a part of six significant matches in WrestleMania folklore (The ladder match at WrestleMania X, the Iron Man match at WrestleMania XII, Main Event with Austin at XIV, match with Jericho at XIX, Triple Threat at WrestleMania XX, match with Angle at XXI). Has anyone been "made" from a WrestleMania match? If so, whom? Certainly, Austin at WrestleMania XIII is the most obvious one that comes to mind. What match do you think of first when you think of a big Mania match? Without a doubt, Hogan/Andre. Even before I started watching, I knew about that match. Still possibly the most famous match in U.S. wrestling history. How important is a memorable entrance for a match at Mania? How much does that add to the feel of the match? I agree with foleyfanforever88, a plus but not a neccessity. Who had the best entrance that added to the feel of the match? There have been many cool entrances over the years at WM but the one I believe added the most to the match was Warrior's at WrestleMania VII. The runner up is anybody who used the ring carts at WrestleMania III and VI. If they brought those back, I'd mark out harder than I have in years. -
His name is jericholic82, Venk.

Federation Era: WrestleMania III (Yeah- this is kind of a two match show but the whole card has an unbelieveable energy and atmosphere to it that makes even the forgettable matches incredibly watchable) Attitude Era: WrestleMania X-7 Current era: WrestleMania XX

My house show thread in June '06 only got 16 replies and it had Batista's return But yeah IMO house show reports deserve their own threads. I like 'em for some reason.
-
Excuse me moderators, I have a suggestion. I'm not sure how to articulate this but I think it'd be a smart idea to allow discussion of WWF/E from 2000 on. The "five year rule" for old school wrestling IMO is downright stupid. Does anybody think anything that happened in this decade is old school? And it allows for more topics like Dandy's TSM town hall about the Triple H/Kurt Angle/Stephanie angle.
-
I'm in no way supporting bringing Leena back however if we do decide to bring her back, we should bring her back for good. She's had too many second chances. It's time for TSM to go one way or the other. I'm not sure if that made any sense whatsoever. As for Dama, I say bring him back but keep him on a short leash. I don't really care one way or another about the rest.

I'll believe it when I see it. The whole fake cast list just seems fake. Elizabeth Banks as Laura!?
