  1. but what am I missing here?

Well I think she's pretty rad, but I don't know what to tell you here. There's not really a lot to "get" with Taylor Swift, ya know? Either you think she's totally adorable and endearing or you don't. Not a whole lot more to it than that.

Is T-Swift about to become a hipster cause célèbre the way Kelly Clarkson was a few years ago? Just warn me now so I can prepare.

  2. Remember how popular the claim that "rock is dead" was back in '97? I seem to recall that Marilyn Manson was a big proponent of this, and pledged that his next album (later to be titled Mechanical Animals) would be a Bowie-style glam revival. And then, by 2000, rock was "back" and MM returned to his trademark Shitty Nu-Metal. I don't regret that period, though. Nu-metal doesn't quite have the cultural resonance of hair metal (probably because it understandably never took hold with the female music-buying public), so it's not as ripe for parody, but I swear to you it's five times more hilarious.

  3. Accepting the fact that there was no way this album was going to turn a profit anyway, that's about as a good a first-week posting you're going to get from a new GNR album in 2008.

The talk of this album as a financial black hole is really overstated. The purpose of the Greatest Hits album released in 2004 was to recoup the expenses of Chinese Democracy, and it worked pretty well (Axl didn't wanted that album released, nor did Slash or Duff. One would think that was Axl releasing records on a regular schedule they'd me more amenable to his desire for them not to release it. Thus, we can assume that Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits would not exist if not for the long wait for the new album. And for that reason I count the money made from Greatest Hits as a profit on Chinese Democracy.)

I wonder who released the first compilation titled "Greatest Hits." That's a name that has stood the test of time.

  4. Colleagues at Pitchfork have therefore wondered why this wasn't a private record West made for himself

Something about this sentence comes off as really hilariously dumb and idealistic to me. ONE: Thinking Kanye fucking West is the kind of Capital-A Artiste who makes records for himself, not money or fame. TWO: The ludicrousness of the idea that Kanye, king attention whore, would ever pass up the chance for recognition. THREE: "Man, my mom just died and I broke up with my fiancee. I'm gonna get over it by recording myself singin' like T-Pain, but nobody's ever going to hear it." Stupid Pitchfork.

  5. Don't get me wrong, I still love the stuff, but IRS and Chinese Democracy got the biggest pops from me all night, much to the confusion of the people surrounding me.

what's going to be hilarious is that the album will probaly be comprised entirely of songs we've never heard...

It's from the same thread where Banky and I sparred over his posting a Photoshopped picture of Axl's face on Ali G's body.

Music sales were down anywhere from 10% to 30% and hit albums released for Black Friday didn't perform up to expectations, according to merchants contacted by Billboard. Sources say Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" will sell in the range of 425,000-450,000 units, significantly down from 700,000-975,000 units previously projected.

Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is expected to clock in at 250,000-260,000, which is also down from expectations that it would sell anywhere from 300,000-784,000 units.

Oh man I hope Bryant the Bub doesn't see this post!

The week begins with more bad news for financially-hobbled Midway. Just days after finding itself on the business end of a delisting notice from the New York Stock Exchange, the company's majority stockholder, Sumner Redstone, is now preparing to row away from the sinking ship entirely. According to the Wall Street Journal, Redstone and his holding company, National Amusements, hope the separation will help breathe new life into the firm's suffocating $1.6 billion in debt.

Redstone is expected to inflict sell his 87% controlling stake in the troubled publisher to private investor Mark Thomas -- obviously someone who enjoys a good fixer-upper -- for the bargain basement price of about $100,000, or $0.0012 a share, well below Midway's previous closing price of .38 a share. The WSJ also points out that the sale is but one point in what has become a highlight reel of bad investments for Redstone, who sunk millions into Midway in hopes of the company's heroic return, only to see it do a fatality on his bank account.

  8. For a female, Ginger Snaps hasn't been subjected to the ridiculous fawning that TSM women usually are on the receiving end of. Perhaps this is because she is thought to be Prince Paul. Ripper once said she looked like iCarly but I don't consider that flirting, unless Rip was utilizing the Mystery Method and wanted to drop a Neg by comparing her to a 14-year-old.
