  1. "The Sign" would have been a worthy nominee but it's always been my opinion that "All That She Wants" is the superior Ace of Base song. The less heralded "It's A Beautiful Life" may have been my favorite overall.

Oh, I agree with this. It reminds me of "It's A Sin" by the Pet Shop Boys, one of my definite picks in the eventual 80s tournament.

P.S. One time I looked for the "Beautiful Life" video on YouTube and found the song set to clips of Hitler.

  2. Salt-N-Pepa- "Whatta Man" (d. "Seether," 23-8)

Beck- "Loser" (d. "I Want It That Way," 21-10) Mikey Whipwreck > LT.

Montell Jordan- "This Is How We Do It" (d. "I Don't Want To Wait," 27-4)

Goo Goo Dolls- "Iris" (d. "Missing," 24-7)

The Breeders- "Cannonball" (d. "Mmmbop," 21-10)

Snoop Doggy Dogg- "Gin and Juice" (d. "Wicked Game," 24-7)

Kris Kross- "Jump" (d. "Who Will Save Your Soul," 20-11)

Dee-Lite- "Groove Is In The Heart" (d. "Inside Out," 22-9)

Jamiroquai- "Virtual Insanity" (d. "Building a Mystery," 21-10)

Warren G. (ft. Nate Dogg)- "Regulate" (d. "Livin La Vida Loca," 26-5)

Notorious B.I.G. (ft. Puff Daddy and Mase)- "Mo Money Mo Problems" (d. "Kiss Me," 22-9)

L.L. Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out" (d. "Genie In a Bottle," 19-12)

Fiona Apple- "Criminal" (d. "End of the Road," 19-12) The "Buddy Holly" video is great, but you can't jack off to it.

Weezer- "Buddy Holly" (d. "You Mean The World To Me," 26-4)

    U2- "One" (d. "Dreamlover," 22-9)

Jay-Z- "Can I Get A..." (d. "Tearin' Up My Heart," 21-10) J-HOVA THE GOD MC. Fuck off

Nirvana- "Heart Shaped Box" (d. "Smells Like Teen Spirit," 16-15)

Blink 182- "Dammit" (d. "All the Small Things," 21-10)

Blur- "Song 2" (d. "Boys and Girls," 17-14)

Stone Temple Pilots- "Interstate Love Song" (d. "Plush," 20-11)

    Smashing Pumpkins- "1979" (d. "Today," 16-15)

Seal- "Kiss From a Rose" (d. "Crazy," 19-12)

    Cranberries- "Linger" (d. "Dreams," 21-10)

    No Doubt- "Don't Speak" (d. "Spiderwebs," 19-12)

Alanis Morissette- "You Oughta Know" (d. "Ironic," 24-7)

Green Day- "Basket Case" (d. "Good Riddance," 19-12)

Oasis- "Wonderwall" (d. "Champagne Supernova," 20-11)

R.E.M.- "Losing My Religion" (d. "Everybody Hurts," 20-11)

    Chumbawumba- "Tubthumpin" (d. "Bitch," 19-12)

Tom Cochrane- "Life Is a Highway" (d. "Glycerine," 20-11)

Third Eye Blind- "Semi-Charmed Life" (d. "All I Want," 23-8)

Blind Melon- "No Rain" (d. "Jealous Again," 24-7)

    TLC- "Waterfalls" (d. "Cryin,'" 17-14)

Soundgarden- "Black Hole Sun" (d. "My Lovin'," 22-9)

MC Hammer- "U Can't Touch This" (d. "Ice Ice Baby," 21-10)

Skee-Lo- "I Wish" (d. "In The Meantime," 22-9) Did you know that Hammer once put a hit out on 3rd Bass because he thought they dissed his mom? Now I'm not a 3rd Bass fan, because they dissed V-Ice without provocation, but still, that's just wrong. I thought he was a man of God. FUK U HAMMER

    Naughty By Nature- "O.P.P." (d. "Shoop," 21-10)

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince- "Summertime" (d. "The Freshmen," 20-11)

2Pac- "California Love" (d. "...Hit Me Baby One More Time," 22-9)

Fugees- "Killing Me Softly With His Song" (d. "Wannabe," 23-8)

Dr. Dre (ft. Snoop Doggy Dogg)- "Nuthin But a G Thang" (d. "I Do It For You," 21-10)

The Verve- "Bittersweet Symphony" (d. "One Week," 22-9)

Beastie Boys- "Sabotage" (d. "Good," 26-5)

The Cardigans- "Lovefool" (d. "Two Princes," 16-15)

The Offspring- "Self Esteem" (d. "Give Me One Reason," 21-10)

Eagle-Eye Cherry- "Save Tonight" (d. "Runaway Train," 16-15)

Semisonic- "Closing Time" (d. "Walking In Memphis, 24-7)

Red Hot Chili Peppers- "Under the Bridge" (d. "Shine," 24-7)

Radiohead- "Creep" (d. "Mr. Jones," 23-8)

Outkast- "Rosa Parks" (d. "Lump," 20-11)

Pearl Jam- "Evenflow" (d. "Low," 23-8)

New Radicals- "You Get What You Give" (d. "All I Wanna Do," 24-7)

Pras (ft. Maya and ODB)- "Ghetto Superstar" (d. "One of Us," 24-7)

    Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing Compares 2 U" (d. "Counting Blue Cars," 23-8)

Nada Surf- "Popular" (d. "I Touch Myself," 16-15)

Faith No More- "Epic" (d. "Sex and Candy," 20-11)

Guns N Roses- "November Rain" (d. "More Than Words," 26-5) I'm sorry, Agent and the rest of the cool guys, but I can't in good conscience vote against this. Do the whole tournament over again, I don't care. I loved this when I was 7, and I still love it now. Those fake strings just move me. Trust me, this wasn't such an easy decision. I remember when Lisa Loeb walked around in a thong on her E! reality show. She has a good-looking ass. I've also seen Axl in a thong, and it's kinda disturbing. But the vote stands.

Lisa Loeb- "Stay (I Missed You)" (d. "Tennessee," 19-12)

Hootie and the Blowfish- "I Only Wanna Be With You" (d. "Santa Monica," 22-9)

Ben Folds Five- "Brick" (d. "Flagpole Sitta," 20-11)

Garbage- "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" (d. "The Way," 19-12) Tough one. But Garbage trumps just about everything.

Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy" (d. "Back That Azz Up," 18-13)

    Foo Fighters- "Everlong" (d. "What's Up," 25-6)

Meat Loaf- "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" (first round bye) Oh, but if it goes up against Meat Loaf, you know which side I'm on. Good work Kinetic, you done me proud.

Those are my picks. Waddup nineties? BUTT Out.

  3. I read the first couple of posts in this thread. No no no, wrong wrong wrong.

Hey, I was just making an offhand comment. I never intended for it to become the basis of a thread, but some overzealous mod decided to sully the reputation of the Bug Jar with this weak feud.

  4. Extreme- "More Than Words" I love this song. It's better than "November Rain" on so many levels.

OK, look bud. It's fine not to like GNR. And I certainly understand not liking "November Rain." But to suggest that "More Than Words," or any Extreme song for that matter, is actually good is just crazy talk.

  5. Don't get all BUTThurt, Kinetic. I wouldn't have chosen any Aerosmith songs, even though I did love them when I was 12. And if you can't appreciate Bat Out of Hell II, that's your problem.

I was going to volunteer to run the 80s thing, because I would run it by the will of the people, but Agent has already vowed to do so. I view this as a negative because I can't help but fear that 75% of the decade's great pop hits will be discarded because "synthesizers are fucking gay," but oh well. I'll still vote for "Fast Car."

  6. All over your ass? I just said you didn't pick the song I wanted! I'm not taking this seriously, even though I did use the word "fuckbucket." I've always gotten along with you, K-Tic, and I don't want to start a war here. But(t), from the puzzling selection of songs to the claim that the reasoning behind the picks was "not limited to your nominations," I got the feeling that you were going your own way on this. Apparently that's not the case, even though I don't know exactly how you came up with all these songs. And since you're the dude in charge of this, you can do whatever you want with it.

It may have been a better idea to actually set some ground rules for nominations instead of just "Name all the songs you want, I'm going to start with 20" and then everyone follows with twenty of their own, or 100 if you're Twisted Intestine. You should have done it the way it was done in the best/worst poster tournaments, where people were told to choose a set number of nominations and those that were nominated were tabulated and seeded accordingly. It also may have been a good idea to allow more than one day of nominations, but whatever, we got a pretty good field out of it.

Brody, get your camera ready again.

  7. This tournament went from "fun board activity" to "Kinetic vanity project" real quick, didn't it? Way to leave out Meat Loaf, fuckbucket. "Best Poster" my BUTT more like "Best Loster" except take out the "t" that makes you a LOSER.

You are WRONG. So, so wrong. I left Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, etc. out because no one was going to vote for that adult contempo horseshit. It's unfortunate that I couldn't cater to each individual poster's taste in music. Maybe a round of 10,000 next time.

Yeah, well explain the Bryan Adams song then.

  8. Toad the Wet Bracket

Veruca Salt- "Seether" I liked Veruca Salt. "Volcano Girls" was better but this will do. Salt-n-Pepa I never cared for.

    Salt-N-Pepa- "Whatta Man"

Backstreet Boys- "I Want It That Way" - I'm sorry, but this is an undeniably great song. I remember back in '99 MTV claimed that the release of "Loser" was the most important musical event of the 90s because it ushered in the age of irony. That is straight bullshit and I will not stand for it.

    Beck- "Loser"

Paula Cole- "I Don't Want To Wait"

Montell Jordan- "This Is How We Do It" - Fuck Dawson's Creek. The Jordan song was Rocco Rock's solo theme in ECW for one match at least. Montell wins.

    Everything But The Girl- "Missing"

Goo Goo Dolls- "Iris" - I really enjoyed "Iris" back in '98. I never liked "Missing." Easy one.

    Hanson- "Mmmbop" - For Inc

    The Breeders- "Cannonball"

Chris Isaak- "Wicked Game" - I always found the G-funk sound to be rather depressing. "Wicked Game" had that hot video and that can't be ignored.

Snoop Doggy Dogg- "Gin and Juice"

Jewel- "Who Will Save Your Soul"

Kris Kross- "Jump" - Oh, I could stand to never hear "Who Will Save Your Soul" again.

    Eve 6- "Inside Out"

Deee-Lite- "Groove Is In The Heart" - Eve 6 were terrible. That Deee-lite song is real annoying but it's better than the alternative.

Sarah McLachlan- "Building a Mystery" - Neither one made much of an impression on me. I think I'd rather listen to the McLachlan tune.

    Jamiroquai- "Virtual Insanity"

Warren G. (feat. Nate Dogg)- "Regulate"

Ricky Martin- "Livin La Vida Loca" - This was tough. "Regulate" is one of the best rap singles of the 90s but you can't deny "Livin' La Vida Loca." It's just so upbeat and full of energy!

Sixpence None The Richer- "Kiss Me"

Notorious B.I.G. (feat. Puff Daddy and Mace)- "Mo Money Mo Problems" - Never liked either. But I do like "I'm Coming Out" a little, so Biggie wins. Mourn ya 'til I join ya, doggy.

Christina Aguilera- "Genie In A Bottle" - Both good enough. I picked the first one, well, just because. Sometimes you have to go with your gut.

L.L. Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out"

Boyz II Men- "End Of The Road" - This is where the quality vs nostalgia thing comes up. I definitely liked "Criminal" back in the day, because I thought the video was really hot (little did I know that Ms. Apple was mocking the idea that someone as stick-thin as her could be sexy. I feel sonned). But today, I like "End of the Road" better. I like it much better than its successor, "I'll Make Love To You." So yeah, EOTR wins. It's just better.

    Fiona Apple- "Criminal"

Toni Braxton- "You Mean The World To Me"

Weezer- "Buddy Holly" - I didn't even know the Braxton song until now. It sucks.

    Mariah Carey- "Dreamlover"

U2- "One" - "One" isn't one of U2's best, but "Dreamlover" ain't one of Mariah's best. Should've picked "Hero." That's a song you can set your watch to.

'N Sync- "Tearin' Up My Heart" - One of these songs doesn't feature Ja Rule. Automatic win.

    Jay Z- "Can I Get A..."

Give Me One Region To Stay Here

Nirvana- "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - I didn't care for Nirvana, but "Heart-Shaped Box" is barely listenable. It was the soundtrack for a nice Beulah McGillicutty music video in ECW, but those are all the positive associations I have with it.

    Nirvana- "Heart Shaped Box"

Blink 182- "Dammit" - I liked "Dammit." The other song can suck it. Easy.

Blink 182- "All The Small Things"

Blur- "Song 2" - "Girls and Boys" is obnoxious. I don't care much for "Song #2" but back in '97 when MTV played anything rock at all it was a momentous event.

    Blur- "Girls and Boys"

    Stone Temple Pilots- "Plush"

Stone Temple Pilots- "Interstate Love Song" - I never liked "Plush." But I did like "Interstate Love Song." So there.

    Smashing Pumpkins- "Today"

Smashing Pumpkins- "1979" - "1979" was a cool song in 5th grade. "Tonight, Tonight" was better but I'll take this.

Seal- "Crazy" - I hated "Kiss From A Rose" back then. I wasn't listening to music when "Crazy" came out, so I never hated it. Win.

    Seal- "Kiss From A Rose"

The Cranberries- "Dreams" - The correct answer is "Zombie." But "Dreams" is better than "Linger."

    The Cranberries- "Linger"

No Doubt- "Spiderwebs" - "Spiderwebs" is a fun little song. "Don't Speak" was nice and acceptable in '96, but since then I've become something of a hair metal connoisseur and I expect a little more from my ballads.

    No Doubt- "Don't Speak"

Alanis Morissette- "You Oughta Know" - "You Oughta Know" was another fun song. The f-word made it seem very subversive in 5th grade. I've heard "Ironic" too many times.

    Alanis Morissette- "Ironic"

Green Day- "Basket Case" - Appropriating the canon doesn't always work. But here it did. Which reminds me, when we have the 2000s thread, nominating "Graduation (Friends Forever)" should be punishable by banning. I'm saying this because I can't help but think Czech will want to nominate it. No you won't, bud.)

Green Day- "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)"

    Oasis- "Wonderwall"

Oasis- "Champagne Supernova" - "Wonderwall" was covered quite badly by Ryan Adams. "Champagne Supernova" has a nice guitar solo.

R.E.M.- "Losing My Religion" - Performed on Boston Public --> Auto win.

    R.E.M.- "Everybody Hurts"

    Chumbawumba- "Tubthumping"

Meredith Brooks- "Bitch" - Eh, don't care for either. Meredith was more attractive than the girl from Chumbawumba. What a terrible name.

Tom Cochrane- "Life Is A Highway"

Bush- "Glycerine" - Sorry, Inc. "Glycerine" was a favorite of mine in 5th grade. I liked "Machinehead" better, but all the singles from that album were good.

Toad the Wet Sprocket- "All I Want" - I never liked either, but "Semi-Charmed Life" is just so...BLAH. It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't heard it a thousand times, but I have and so it is.

    Third Eye Blind- "Semi-Charmed Life"

Black Crowes- "Jealous Again" - I couldn't stand "No Rain." Stupid bee girl.

    Blind Melon- "No Rain"

    2 Legit Bracket

Aerosmith- "Cryin'" - Aerosmith was my favorite band when I was 12, so I have to give them a vote. But "Cryin'" is the worst of the Silverstone Trilogy.

    TLC- "Waterfalls"

En Vogue- "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" - Soundgarden wasn't so great. "Pretty Noose" was good, but I don't care for anything else by them. En Vogue, a winner is you.

    Soundgarden- "Black Hole Sun"

MC Hammer- "U Can't Touch This"

Vanilla Ice- "Ice Ice Baby" - When Hammer remakes his greatest hit as a nu-metal anthem, then it will be close. As it is, V. Ice takes it strong.

Skee-Lo- "I Wish" - I just heard that Spacehog song now. I'm glad I missed it the first time.

    Spacehog- "In The Meantime"

    Salt-N-Pepa- "Shoop"

Naughty By Nature- "O.P.P." - Again with the Salt-n-Pepa! Such a boring act. "O.P.P." was fun.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince- "Summertime"

The Verve Pipe- "The Freshmen" - I bought the Verve Pipe CD for this song. The album was terrible, but I have no regrets.

Britney Spears- "...Baby One More Time" - Britney seemed so cool and down-to-earth back then. I miss those days.

    2Pac- "California Love"

    Spice Girls- "Wannabe"

The Fugees- "Killing Me Softly With His Song" - Nice, laid back tune this was. "Wannabe" was so silly that I can't in good conscience vote for it.

Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Doggy Dogg)- "Nuthin But A G Thang"

Bryan Adams- "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" - As I said, I like great power ballads. And this is one of the best right here. One of the sappiest, wussiest, syrupy ballads of the 90s, which is exactly what you want out of the genre.

    Barenaked Ladies- "One Week"

    The Verve- "Bittersweet Symphony" -

    GordonBarenakedLadies.jpg

    No further explanation necessary.

    Better Than Ezra- "Good"

Beastie Boys- "Sabotage" - "Sabotage" video is a classic. The BTE song is not so "Good." LOLOLOLOL

    The Cardigans- "Lovefool"

Spin Doctors- "Two Princes" - We used to listen to this in 3rd grade music class. Spin Doctors would have been a great one-hit wonder if they didn't have another hit which sucked.

Tracy Chapman- "Give Me One Reason"

Offspring- "Self Esteem" - When we do the 80s tournament, I'll nomination "Fast Car." But this song? No. "Self-Esteem" was good.

    Eagle-Eye Cherry- "Save Tonight"

Soul Asylum- "Runaway Train" - Like "Two Princes," a classic from the days of 3rd grade music class.

Mark Cohn- "Walking In Memphis" - I hate this song, but I bashed "Closing Time" to Czech last night and voting for it would be hypocritical. Also, Cohn is a straight up gangsta who survived getting shot in the head.

    Semisonic- "Closing Time"

Collective Soul- "Shine" - I hate "Under the Bridge."

Red Hot Chili Peppers- "Under The Bridge"

Damn! I Wish I Was Your Bracket

    Counting Crows- "Mr. Jones"

Radiohead- "Creep" - "Round Here" was the good Crows single.

Outkast- "Rosa Parks" - Oh, screw you, "Lump." You'll never get my vote.

Presidents of the United States of America- "Lump"

    Cracker- "Low"

Pearl Jam- "Evenflow" - I loved "Evenflow." I hadn't heard the Cracker song until now but it blows and Sandra Bernhard is in the video, which might have been a dealbreaker even if the song was good.

Sheryl Crow- "All I Wanna Do"

New Radicals- "You Get What You Give" - Easy. I couldn't stand "All I Wanna Do" back then, and I still hate it now. I couldn't stand "You Get What You Give" back then, but after a couple of years I came to realize that I did, in fact, like it. So I checked out the album, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too, and it's surprisingly great. Gregg Alexander is an awesomely talented dude, and his lyrical ability reminds me of Steinman in some ways, even though he also made

and HOLY CRAP is it bad.

Pras (ft. Maya & ODB)- "Ghetto Superstar" - Oh, I'll never vote for "yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good."

    Joan Osborne- "One Of Us"

    Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing Compares 2 U" - Good song.

    Dishwalla- "Counting Blue Cars"

The Divinyls- "I Touch Myself" - Featured on My So-Called Life. Winner.

    Nada Surf- "Popular"

    Marcy Playground- "Sex and Candy"

Faith No More- "Epic" - I love "Epic" but it came out in '89, so it shouldn't even be here. I'd like to vote against it on principle but "Sex and Candy" is SO BAD that I could never do it.

    Extreme- "More Than Words"

Guns N Roses- "November Rain" - Greatest power ballad ever. Extreme sucked. Easiest one here.

    Arrested Development- "Tennessee"

Lisa Loeb- "Stay (I Missed You)" - "Stay" is a nice gentle song. Most socially conscious hip-hop is bad and AD was no exception.

    Everclear- "Santa Monica"

Hootie and the Blowfish- "I Only Wanna Be With You" - Hey Dan, if I want to not like this song, it is my GOD GIVEN RIGHT AS AN AMERICAN. But Everclear could never get my vote, especially with that fucking song. It only has like two chords! All Everclear songs sound the same, but "Santa Monica" was the worst.

    Harvey Danger- "Flagpole Sitta"

Ben Folds Five- "Brick" - I kinda liked "Brick." I never liked "Flagpole Sitta."

    Fastball- "The Way"

Garbage- "Only Happy When It Rains" - I really liked Garbage, especially this song. My brother really liked "The Way" and I'll never know why.

Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy" - "Hey Jealousy" was good. Fine with me.

    Juvenile- "Back That Azz Up"

    Foo Fighters- "Everlong"

4 Non Blondes- "What's Up" - As much as I hate Linda Perry's annoying voice, I still kinda liked this song. Never cared much for "Everlong" though I liked other FF singles.

  9. This tournament went from "fun board activity" to "Kinetic vanity project" real quick, didn't it? Way to leave out Meat Loaf, fuckbucket. "Best Poster" my BUTT more like "Best Loster" except take out the "t" that makes you a LOSER.
