Okay. How much time, and do we PM it to you or are you going to start a thread for it? There's a few games I'll need to rent to see if they'd place for me.
-
I'm honored, but I think we should really do a breakdown by genre besides, or at least as a start. Also, I enjoy playing fighting games, but at the same time I'm not very good at them, with next to nobody to beat on save for the computer and a couple of scrubby friends. Jer'd probably be a good choice for at least the fighters. I plead complete ignorance on the best FPSers (well, I love Prime, but not a true FPS), sports games, and pretty much any PC games. My knowledge of NES games is pretty limited, having never owned one personally. What's the status on imports? Kinda unfair to rate a game that isn't accessible to most people. Of course, the imports that never ever made it here are mostly shooters, and I don't know anyone here who really considers themselves well-versed at side-scrolling shooters.

It's the Neo Geo Pocket Color game, not the arcade game. It's a good portable game, but yeah--shouldn't be ranked that high. I have a hard time believing that all the people who voted for it actually played it, though. Castlevania always had crap controls until, oh, say Bloodlines. Weren't really "good" until Symphony of the Night. Double Dragon's hardly a classic, but it was a big hit so people often consider it one. Ghosts and Goblins had good controls, it was just hella hard and your enemies were far better at maneuvering than you. How fucking pretentious can you get? FFVII is more like those Oscar winners where you look back and wonder how a certain other movie didn't win instead. If it were old *and* overrated, perhaps it would be a better comparison. The Shenmues are boring as hell, and the voice-acting/pacing is painful. I've heard lots of people talk about how both games get much better later on, but I've never made it that far on either of them. I think I was still looking for sailors and playing Sega arcade games on 1 and on 2 the last thing I did was air out books. Does anyone remember when people were calling Banjo-Kazooie better than Mario 64?

I think what CT means is--once the marketing hype has died down, the game has been played, and long after it has been released--how will it stand? Obviously it will be different for different people, but the general consensus I'd heard is that a lot of people didn't think Halo 2 quite matched up to the hype, at least for the single-player missions. I'd often heard it referred to as a glorified expansion pack. In comparison, Halo 1 might be more fondly remembered in the long run, but I think both will be given plenty of props in the future. The best of the Mario/Sonic/Zelda games are going to be fondly remembered by casuals and hardcores. I don't like that "unquestionable loyalty" assertion, though. There's some smug assumptions made about fans, of--oh, the GTA games. Despite the fact that they're good games, there are many, many people who love it who are idiots, and don't know shit about games besides. It's easy to hate something because its popular. A perfect example of this is the opinions about X-Box 360 being debuted on MTV, which is a complete joke to just about any gamer over the age of 13 (and likely plenty of non-gamers as well).

Nope, the only sequel or follow up to Landstalker is Dark Savior on Saturn or allegedly Time Stalkers on Dreamcast. EDIT: But the back of the box of Alundra clearly states that at least some of the people who worked on Landstalker worked on Alundra, so apparently it is a spiritual successor. I was confused by Climax releasing DC games later, though.

Devil Dice is better than Tetris.
-
No, average list. Not as good as the 2nd list, but better than the 1st one. Plus, the whole 100 is pretty good overall.
-
Well, I agree that it's be pretty much a pointless exercise, because too many biases would creep in. I think the 2nd list is adequate, although I might disagree about the order. That's really not a damning thing to say about a list, because people tend to never be happy about those lists anyway. But when games that in no way in hell should be on there are (the 1st list) then there's a problem. Incidentally, I found an EGM from 2002 with their top 100 list (it was the issue with Seanbaby's list of worst games of all time, which brought ET to the attention of a lot more people, I believe). I won't type every entry up, but the top 20: 20. Galaga 19. Panzer Dragoon Saga 18. Pokemon Puzzle League 17. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 16. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island 15. Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec 14. Metal Gear Solid 13. Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting 12. Final Fantasy V (Antholgy Ed) 11. Super Mario Bros. 3 (All Stars Ed.) 10. Super Mario World 9. Final Fantasy III 8. Legend of Zelda: OOT 7. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (yeah--HUH?!) 6. Soul Calibur 5. Super Mario 64 4. Castlevania: SotN 3. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2. Tetris 1. Super Metroid MM is a bit of a head-scratcher, and FFV?! Other than that, not bad, and typical of most of these sorts of lists.

Proud of ya boy. Doesn't it feel good to let it out? Just because it doesn't totally suck doesn't mean I don't hate it. But the dungeons absolutely suck, still. FFVII sucking late in the game puts them on a similar level. Lunars are iffy--if they were Playstation exclusive I'd say yeah, but they were upgrades of Sega CD games. Then there's WD's moronic translation bogging them down.

Alundra is quality, but I consider it more of an Adventure game than a true RPG. Obviously it owes a bit of debt to Zelda. The 2nd Alundra's "meh" though.
-
"Of it's generation," meaing the best RPG on the PlayStation. You could make an arguement for Final Fantasy Tactics, but I think of that more as a battle/tactical simulation game, myself. But, is it better than FFVII? That's like the situation with Zelda 64 and Zelda: LttP. You could spend hours debating it, and get nowhere. Tactics is better than FFVII. Hands down. No debate. There are RPGs better than FFVII on Playstation, like Star Ocean 2, (as much as it pains me) Xenogears (disc 1), and arguably a few other choices like Suikoden II or Dragon Warrior VII. Best Playstation RPG at the time (like Beyond the Beyond or Shadow Madness are really tough competition), but outclassed soon after but less well-known games. Even without that on the list, your list is still needs more variety, and the 2nd list gaves Mario his deserved props. A game that almost single-handedly revived the industry, has been copied countless times over and defined the platformer genre, and still is fantastic fun to play and one of the best games on the planet certainly is worth a top 5 spot at least. I agree about the LttP/OOT situation. It's hard to pick the superior game.

*dittos the Quistis love* She has a whip, too. Kudos to Czech for the Van Hagar reference.

"5. Final Fantasy VII. This was undoubtedly the greatest RPG of it's generation." No.
-
Agreed. Those GBA Metroid games aren't bad, but no way in hell do two of them belong in the 90's of any top 100 list. Two Zeldas in the top 10 of the second list is a *little* controversial--but I see X-COM and blink "huh?" The 2nd list's order is suspect, but pretty much all of those choices belong there---except Wolf 3-D shouldn't be, since it's impact was minimal until Doom and it wasn't a great game. Golden Axe sucks today, flat out. Tobal 2 doesn't really belong on the list for obvious reasons. It sounds like import snob hype to me. Gunstar and Bionic Commando should be higher, but being on the list is good enough. Super Mario World is mediocre compared to SMB3, I swear. It should get SMW's spot, although I guess it's because more people probably played SMW. However, Yoshi's Island beating SMW makes it alright. 1st list--WTF?! HCTP?! Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door (good game, but come on..)?! Maxx Payne 2?!?! Zelda at 80?! Starcraft at 74?! METAL GEAR SOLID 2??!?!?! Fuck this list, I can't read it anymore. Jak 3 making the top 50, ditto on that being messed up.

I was glad when I first heard that Tifa had Blitz techniques, but when the game actually came out, I was pissed that they replaced one of the most fun parts of FFVI, executing the Blitz attacks with fighting game motions, with a A FRIGGIN SLOT MACHINE. And yeah, Aeris was just Terra, not done nearly as well, defrosted and reheated. Which is why I never could really care much about her death. That being said--YUFFIE though?!

All old games 3 for $15 at GameCrazy starting 4/28

Harvest Moon's the only super-rare one listed there, save for the gold OOT one (although doesn't make any difference to me personally if they aren't gold--but it have anything to do with glitches/bugs that were fixed later? My grey OOT cart doesn't have the double shield trick). Pretty good taste in games, Matt. That list is very similar to my current n64 library. I am still looking for Jet Force Gemini and Mischief Makers myself, but usually I would find them for about 5 bucks each when I didn't have an N64. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Starfox are very common and cheap. Mario Kart 64 is common as dirt but for some reason I usually see them for $19.99 most places. But they'll have like 6 of them. Why is Bad Fur Day so hard to find lately? No store could get rid of 'em when they were new. I don't have a GameCrazy, but if I see any of those games for 5 or less that Scroby can't hook you up with, I could do it. I've got a Diddy Kong Racing and a Mario Kart 64 I'd be willing to part with, but Scroby seems to have those covered. -
Tifa, Aeris, Yuffie, and Barrett are the possible outcomes. 1st time through was Aeris, then 2nd time though I was a total ass and ended up with Yuffie.

Duke Nukem Forever is supposed to actually see the light of day soon after all, though.

Rolling Thunder wasn't on any of the previous Museums except Encore, which was a Japan-only release. Info on all of Namco's prior compilations can be found here: http://www.classicgaming.com/pac-man/Museum/ The Museum games, 1-5, can be looked up by clicking on the N,A,M,C, or O pictures at the top of the page. EDIT: found a better site for it here http://www.retroarcade.com/console/namcomus/namcomus.asp So, nothing off IV, the best of vol. 1, 2, 3, and 5, and a couple off Encore. So those of you begging for Wonder Momo in the US, you're outta luck.

*fails to see how the lil homiez are worse than these*

I've doubted its reliability ever since it said I was closest to Al Sharpton.

After playing some Alien Front the other night, I noticed an ad on the back of the manual for a game called Propeller Arena: Aviation Battle Championship. The ad referred to it as "finally, a flight game for fighting game fanatics!" It sounded familiar--I'd read some previews on it way back when the DC was out. I looked up some info on it, and it's a game with a bunch of WWII-looking planes, where the object is primarily aerial combat/dog-fighting. Unfortunately, it never came out, at least here (GameFAQs lists it as "canceled" in North America). One message board guessed it had something to do with 9-11. Anyone know if it came out in other parts of the world, or if there's a good game in the same style of it you could recommend? Feel free to comment on some other promising games that were cancelled too, if you like.

Brian Gewirtz to Take Leave of Absence from WWE

Triple H is the only one with the privilege to ride Flair. There's something for the returning Mark Henry, though. He's about the size of Kit Tajiri could lay stiff kicks into the appropriate sides to turn. -

Matt is to "I'm poor" as Damu is to "I'm big."
