    Bioshock

After playing the game almost non-stop since buying it today--this is looking to be my GOTY so far. Such a fun, beautiful game. My biggest complaint of the demo, the Splicers basically making a beeline for you whenever you're in the area, isn't really a problem. Sure, they'll ambush you now and then but you can sneak up on them and give it back to them, too. I love exploiting the security system, going off exploring, and hearing gunfire and screams and returning to a pile of dead splicers (maybe a straggler or two left alive). I noticed in the tea garden area (or any area with a big pool of water) when you set a splicer on fire it'll dive into the water....that's when I zap 'em with an electro bolt. *evil grin* If you're in a big fight, check the floor for flammable liquids--you can sometimes set multiple enemies ablaze that way. I think I'll look into Deus Ex too--sounds really cool.

Ripper--I generally hate FPSers too--Metroid Prime being the first I really enjoyed. Speaking of which, a lot of story elements unfold in a similar way. Instead of scanning, you collect voice recordings scattered all over the place. I haven't played Black, but if I just want to shoot the crap out of stuff, playing the old Doom games usually do it for me. From what I heard there wasn't much more to Black than just shooting the crap out of stuff, but I may be wrong. I got my copy of Bioshock, though. EDIT AGAIN: Spoiler tags added. Not really much more than what was revealed in the demo, but anyone who missed it may not appreciate.

Didn't he break JR's leg or arm? Then again, Kane burned JR alive but JR quickly forgave him for that. He broke his arm, I believe. Specifically his damn arm, I believe.

To play the game the way it was originally intended to be played. What's so crazy about that? I happen to like the GC controller for 3D games. Remember, I haven't played through the game (let alone multiple times) like some folks. I'll admit that once I tried it, seeing I have to hold down the B-button to run, I said "yuk" and picked up the wiichuck again, but the same issue still exists with that scheme, it's just less prominent since it's mapped to a button that isn't a pain to hold down often. I don't like having the classic controller as a sole option for traditional controls. I'll take a wavebird over a pad that has a wiimote dangling from it. The GC controller *is* conspicuously absent from the back of the game box and it isn't mentioned in the manual. So while the GC controller support is there, it's there quietly. And if you didn't have access to your nunchuck, it seems silly that you can't boot the game.

I meant that as somewhat tongue-in-cheek, hoping that it beats it as far as overall game design as well as the great reviews. However, you're not the first or second person I've read mention Half-Life along with this game. So...you're the third. I couldn't be happier if it indeed does. I hate first person shooters that are too...first person shootery. Which is why I'm being soaked big time this month for Prime 3 and this one. I'd say it's a safe bet that its sales top Deus Ex, though.

It's supposed to be far more open-ended and varied in its storytelling, so I hope not.

Don't upgrade her bar. She isn't around enough to justify it. Okay, thanks. I was mistaken about the game not supporting the Gamecube controller. You *must* boot the game with the nunchuck or classic controller attached, then unattach it to use the GC controller. Otherwise you're stuck at a "connect nunchuck" prompt, even if you mash buttons on the GC controller. Of course, this isn't explained in the manual.

FAT32 format is what you need. FAT12 and FAT16 (typically what you get by default on most usb flash drives I believe) also work, which is why dubq's flash drives worked, but for a hard drive go with FAT32. Mac OS X and Windows can both recognize FAT. Reformatting requires erase. As long as you have the original computer accessible just put everything back on.

Due to the game's age, more work should have been put into it to justify a new release of it. That's my point. It's a bit costly for a "budget" release, too. Should have been 20 bucks in its current state, or if they went with those enhancements I'd buy it full price and so would many others. It's a good game as a port, but there's lots of wasted potential there for a game that was just dumped on there with wii controls. Riddick for 360 and PS3 isn't going to be *just* a port, it's going to be heavily enhanced in game content and modes. If you're going to port something nearly two years later (just counting the PS2 version, mind you), a slight control enhancement alone doesn't cut it, IMO. It could be argued Capcom sees it more as advertising for Umbrella Chronicles they got consumers to pay for than anything else. Which is why I specifically mentioned that possibility and said that the game should be made harder to compensate. I also didn't mean so much a weapon lock on as a view lock on. Since the quick-look is activated by the d-pad and thus is impractical for most difficult fights something else would have been appreciated. One of my suggestions--killing the run button, wouldn't even be that hard to implement. Tilt the stick slightly to walk, hold to run. They'd want to perhaps include some sped-up walking animations to fill the gap between the two, though.

Comments that don't warrant a thread

Many key members of the Castlevania Bloodlines team also worked on Contra: Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures and the Sega CD port of Snatcher--basically all of Konami's quality Sega output right there. Contrary to popular belief, they aren't the pre-Treasure Treasure. Yaiman and Nami, the lead programmers for Treasure, were the main programmers on Contra 3 and Castlevania IV instead. zis there any known reason why Treasure chose to work with the Genesis rather than SNES? You'd figure that they would have stuck with the hardware they knew best; did Sega just get to them first? Genesis' faster processor. At least that's what Diehard Gamefan said that they said, themselves being a strong fount of ridiculously over-the-top Treasure love and also of misinformation. I haven't seen any published interviews about it, and at the time game developer interviews were a lot less common. Alien Soldier seems to strongly hint that the processor was probably why. There's a lot of great Treasure information in 1up's retrospective (by a vocal critic, I might add): http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3145006

I got RE4 Wii Edition. I missed the game on GC and the PS2 version really looks long in the tooth now despite the extra features. Since I've been catching up on great games I missed last gen, this looked like a great choice. The game is certainly very good, on any system. However, I can't help but think how much better it would be if it wasn't so rigidly RE4. You're still using two buttons to aim and shoot. You still cannot shoot while running. There still is not even a rudimentary lock-on feature. The "quick turn" seems like a natural thing to let you activate with nunchuck shaking. You still have to use the control stick and hold a button to run which should have been more or less barred from games when analog sticks were popularized. I guess it would make the game ridiculously easy, and the game didn't need a complete overhaul, but why does a game with a constant on-screen cursor require an "aim" button and a "shoot" button? Why does a game that uses an analog control stick for basic movement require a button to be held down to run? Why can't I attack unless I'm standing still? Imagine running using the analog (like hundreds of other games)--boom. Smoother game. Imagine the ability to run and shoot, facilitated by the on screen cursor. Add some sort of lock-on. Boom--faster, smoother, more fun game. If you have to have the original game, make it just an option and make an improved version of the game a harder version (faster enemies). At any rate, it's still the best version you can buy, and despite being a GC port it's still one of the prettiest Wii games (next to Twilight Princess, which is *also* a GC port). However, I agree somewhat with that fellow who bitched about the Wii version of this game. Companies shouldn't just make games that use the Wii controls, companies should make games that use Wii controls to make the game *better*, and that goes double for ports like this one. I'm a bit disappointed the game doesn't support the Gamecube controller, although it does work with that Classic controller. Question about the game tho: is it worth it / are there enough yellow herbs to upgrade Ashley's life bar? Or are they so rare that there's just enough to fully upgrade Leon himself?

    Tomb Raider Anniversary

Gamevideos.com actually had the vid first, but now it's finally on a site whose videos, you know, "work": http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=3799 I've hyped it up before. It's currently only gping to be released on PS2, PSP, and Windows, has the same development team and engine as the excellent Tomb Raider Legend, and it's going to be the original Tomb Raider, ramped up with the grid-based gameplay tossed out the window. Tomb Raider Legend itself only has two gripes from most reviewers: the combat needs some polish due to some awkward gunplay, and Legend was also too short (8-10 hours on average). Some minor tweaking should take care of the combat. TR1 is a fairly long game although good controls would surely cut that down quite a bit. It appears there's much more to TRA than just a simple remake--new areas and larger versions of the old have been promised. The trailer shows that one of the coolest moments of TR1 is also intact as well. EDIT: it's being prepped for a February release, BTW. And correction on the platforms it is appearing on.

    Bioshock

Didn't really have the problem with the health packs myself, however it still feels like a bit annoyingly like a PC game in that if your floating arm isn't on screen, you best get it up and ready by pressing your attack button first, which just "re-equips" it. The Plasmid powers, for instance, require you to have your left hand drawn with your selected power. Same thing with the right hand and its weapons. If you don't have it up, best press LT/RT before entering an area (or reselect the same power/weapon) where there might be enemies. It stays up for a while, and it's not a major issue, but just a minor annoyance. Oh, and the demo area has enough booze to get an elephant drunk, but has almost no real food.

    Bioshock

Played through it again, still digging the game but I'm a bit annoyed that enemies always know you're hiding and out to get them, rather than having more opportunities to sneak in and kill them before they can go after you. I didn't notice before there's some interesting video clips available as attract screens. Besides the post-demo trailer there's a video clip of a battle that seems to be somewhat of a "target" vid for the game. An art book for the game is available as a free download from the 2kgames site: http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/artbo...></h2>

    Beautiful Katamari demo on XBLM

The demo sadly doesn't show any exciting new features, moves, obstacles, or design ideas, sadly. It also feels slower (I can't seem to get my Katamari up to a decent speed without activating the dash) for whatever reason. It works better than I expected considering the sticks aren't right next to each other, but I hope this is just so generic to simply introduce 360 owners to the series, presuming they didn't play the others. Otherwise, it might be a symptom of the series creator no longer having a part in the project.

This PS3/360 title...er, 360/Wii title? Er...360 exclusive...? Well, whatever it is this week, it is coming out for 360 at least, and the marketplace has a demo up. It's a merciful 432 MB, after yesterday's massive Bioshock demo release. Downloading now.
