Depends. Sometimes old school is good and sometimes it is bad. In the case of TMNT (haven't played Sin Tzu yet), it's good. However, some "old school" games that are just clones of a really tired out genre that add nothing new and don't even do the old stuff well suck. Generally, though, I see your point. Case in point, this asshole reviewer. "With that said, people looking for a dark and deep number-crunching RPG should look elsewhere." I wonder if this guy would put that in a review of a Zelda game.

*Beats Angelslayer to the punch* Pics? I dare not click that link--sounds scary.

It must be a different developer than the Genesis one. Genesis one was pretty yuck. I think you're correct on both counts there. All I remember is loving the hell out of that game on SNES, and I remember it was by Konami. *checks Gamefaqs* Oh yeah--I thought they were the same game and I only played the Genesis one. It appears that the Genesis version was developed in-house by Sega. Generally, 16-bit + Konami = GOLD.

I forgot about Man-Bat. Yeah, he's rather tricky because you have to hit him at precisely the right time. On harder difficulties it's a real bitch to get past him without losing a good bit of life. When he zooms towards the screen it's risky--I try to only hit him when he comes from the sides of the screen.

Just duck in the right places, throw the Batarang when the mouth is open, and avoid the pollen. Duck Ivy's arrows, too. The Gauntlet was pretty hard at first. Mainly it's a piece of cake if you learn Clayface's pattern. The Joker isn't very tough, neither is Penguin or Scarecrow. Catwoman can cheapshot you sometimes, though. I have managed to get to Joker without behind hit at all by any of the prior bosses. Unfortunately, I never beat it on hard. Easy and Normal yeah, but not Hard. Apparently that's how you get the "true" ending however. Regardless, why is it that the last good Batman game was made about a decade ago?

You act like there's never been a previous GOOD Batman game. Adventures of Batman and Robin for Super Nintendo is excellent. It's a 16-bit title, it has "Konami" on the box. 'Nuff said. The Genesis version of the same name (different game though) also was pretty decent, but had some control problems and was too damn hard. Not sure about the Sega CD one. The Batman movie games all sucked, though.

Yeah, I know because I played them both. It's exclusive to the Genesis and has barbed wire, bottles, chairs, and other weapons. I don't recall though--does the Genesis have the four player option or the Cooperative mode? I know the SNES does. I think on the Genesis only you can exit the ring, use weapons, and throw them into the ring and use them there. If SNES has it also I don't recall it. Genesis sound was rather bad, unfortunately. SNES has great sound--I noticed a lot of classic Capcom themes in there, or variations. One of the bg music was remixed and made into Huitzil's theme in Darkstalkers!

Where's the obligatory hot, scandily-clad catgirl? (unless it's in that forum thing which I won't register for to check out.)

Considering Acclaim did the home version, I'm not surprised. Still, Capcom in Slam Masters left the Hogan lookalike IN THE INTRO to the home versions despite him not being in the game.

Shortly after Sega announced they'd be a 3rd party etc I believe EGM started "Sonic and Tails are in Super Smash Brothers Melee." At a used game store just yesterday a misguided clerk that I was BSing with was convinced Aeris can be resurrected in the Japanese FFVII--I set him straight though. Although on second thought I should have lied, said I owned the import, and made up details. Lots of gaming magazines created the myth that Xenosaga is a good game (not even half right). Saying the Konami Code unlocks this or that is always a good one. It isn't in all their games but usually the older stuff would always have it do something. I've heard some rumors Zack is playable in FFVII. You can play as Sephiroth and Young Cloud with a Gameshark (Seph is cool in Battle Square), but Zack doesn't even have a model for battles I don't think, so that was an odd one. FFVI has sooo many rumors about secrets. Paladin Ring-- you get it when you uncurse the Cursed Ring (false: you get a Hero Ring) Gamma Sword-- fly around Kefka's Tower until you get into a boss fight and you can win it (false--there's not even a slot for that item). There's a secret Esper in the game (half-true. This rumor was started because there is one empty slot in the esper screen. However, it's just for selecting none to unequip espers. However, you can turn the Odin Esper into the Raiden Esper.) You can earn both the Ragnorok Esper and the Ragnarok Sword (false--at least by conventional means. You can steal an Illumina, which you get by trading in the Ragnarok sword at the Colisseum, from Kefka in the final battle I think, but at that point you seriously don't need and can't use it any other places at that point, although it's a devastating throwing weapon for Shadow if you use it right away. The Kappa thing is true, but it's just something you can do to mess around a little. You can turn a weak character into a strong fighter, but I wouldn't waste the Rename Card for that. Marvel Shoes are better anyway. There's a secret cutscene that reveals that Gogo is really Daryl! (I've never seen it, but it's been rumored they're the same. However, if it doesn't play into the story at all it's just speculation). Truth be told, when I first heard the Cursed Shield/Paladin rumor I thought it was bull, but it's very true.

Damnit--I thought there was something I could have beat you on fan-wise. Arcade (played) Genesis (owned) SNES (played; it sucks) 32X (plays. Good but PS1 owns it) Playstation (own it, love it, bought the system for it) Saturn (It's basically the same as PS) PC (not as good as the PS version but decent.) What happened with the SNES version? Two missing characters and horrendous slowdown? Karnage: Yup, that one is true.

Where can I get a free Gamepro subscription? It's always good to keep well-stocked with toilet paper.
-
Thanks. I usually don't find the mag worth buying, and they were pestering me to subscribe the other day, but a free subscription I'll take.
-
Yeah, because hated enemies teaming up without ever really resolving their differences worked terrifically with HHH/Austin. In KOF, somebody should have died. Iori isn't supposed to be a babyface, either.

Lemme get this straight, *you're* complaining about no bounce? Actually, there is bounce when she's walking. It's more realistic, in fact. When a woman of Mai's...figure is standing in one place (even if she's in a stance like Mai's where she's moving around a little bit), her chest shouldn't be wildly out of control, swinging back and forth, threatening to put an eye out. Although if they wanted to make it realistic she'd be bouncing during her dash but there's no movement at all. As for blood, I don't see spurts of milk--just hit sparks (in 2000 at least--not sure about 2K1 since I haven't played it as much). So maybe a Blood/Bounce code is on the way? Renegade: I'm not complaining as much about the Orochi Saga being over as I am them not truly blowing it off, and just going straight to the NESTs saga. They didn't finish with the other story before moving to the next. one. Also, yeah, it should have probably been blown off with SOMEBODY dying--and since you could easily stick in a Kyo clone as an afterthought to keep him on the roster, I don't see why they didn't do that.
-
Yup--you'll miss it? KOF '94 had a "blood and bounce" code, though, so who knows what will be discovered soon.

Didn't know that. Of course, while considered a classic, the Akira movie sucked. I'd heard it butchered the manga to try to fit as much as possible, and added some GTSs. So, that's a reason a lot of details make no damn sense. Oh, and 2K1 has the better gameplay IN YOUR OPINION. Don't be Sakuraing on us now. (/Mighty Damararu) Shame the NESTs games have been rather disappointing overall, because 98(DM99) should have gave them a chance to recharge their batteries and blow off the the Orochi stuff instead of just ignoring it and making OG Kyo an afterthought character. Where was my Geese and Krauser in 98/DM99 SNK?
-
I'm guessing they havent removed any of the Angel bugs have they? Yeah I prefer 2k1 to 2k, the engine is much better and the strikers arent as cheap. Plus 2k1 has all my favorite teams, hero, japan, garou and aof. Also cant forgot Tet...I mean K9999 Oh and I cant fucking stand Kula or Foxy. I believe Kula's a hidden in 2000, but I don't recall if she's playable here. I don't like Angel (her character design sucks and her moves don't thrill me either). While I don't play May Lee, she isn't terrible--she reminds me of Hwaorang who I liked in Tekken 3. However, I never liked stance-changing in 2D fighters, so that counts against her. Out of the new 2000 characters, the only one I really like is Hinako. I like grappler characters anyway, and she has speed on her side plus the palm-strike kinda attacks. Sort of reminds me of a cross between Karin Kanzuki and Rainbow Mika. A female character, of rather average size...as as sumo; that's just a cool concept. Despite the fact that it seems the whole concept was dreamed up to give us a GPS during her intro. You say the 2001 Strikers are "less cheap." I say they suck. Did I mention I hate 2001's music? Ignitz is the name, eh (no names by the life bars in 2K1)? I guess he's another clone, or someone who was cloned. Whatever. SNK is lucky it's a fighting game, or else the fact that they flushed away the Orochi saga storyline for this stupid NESTs/cloning bullshit would really, really hurt the game. At least unlike DM Rugal, he doesn't have a non-super projectile that can kick the ass of any of your super projectiles. As I said, I hate the 2001 art, so that's no plus for me. TETSUO!!!!! Jesus, could they possibly be more blatant? Oh yeah--I guess if they changed the hair color. At least Rei--er, Kula, isn't quite as--familiar. I'm with Ren on Foxy sucking as well. So, I got one fighter I like and one that's rather average; that's still a good deal to me.

As easy as Chrono Trigger is, it is still more difficult (first time through/no New Game +) and strategic than FFVII.

1812 (Yes, we went to war with Canada, and didn't win), Vietnam, Korea (?--I honestly don't remember what I learned about that one so I could be wrong), and depending on if you count it or not, the Bay of Pigs invasion which was arranged by the U.S. was a huge failure. Methinks this is the wrong folder, though.

*raises hand* I'm liking 2000... But 2001? Eh...the select screen art absolutely sucks (*sees "Athena", screams in horror at what looks like a beakless newborn sparrow with purple hair*), I'm not feeling the characters added to it, and unlike 2000's Zero (who may have been almost too easy), 2001's boss is a real bastard, reminding me of getting my ass kicked by the boss Rugal in KOFDM'99.

TMiB is doing enough old-vs.-new-school FF discussion to carry the whole damn thread, and render a topic I was considering starting a pointless exercise (which is good and all). Just one minor point... Ask any reader of Diehard Gamefan circa mid-90s. The Sega CD. Night Cr--Trap. Digital Pictures. Sewer Shark. Power Rangers CD. Tomcat Alley. Loadstar. Who Shot Johnny Rock?. Mad Dog McGree. Jurassic Park. Except for the Lunars, Snatcher, Monkey Island, and a few other oddball titles that worked, most of the attempts to make "interactive movies" were so bad they make Xenosaga look like an actual game. Of course, there was the 3DO which had tons of similar "games." Although honestly, who would buy one except someone with tons of cash to blow and/or REALLY wanted to play the console's versions of Super SF2 Turbo or Samurai Shodown. Say--do you/did you have a 3DO, Sakura?
