I think the funnier Hogan thing was that he was in a tournament in Japan and was scheduled to lose in the finals to Antonio Inoki...but Inoki got KO'd out of the ring and Hogan won by default.
Not counting the breif loss of the title to Antonio Inoki in Tokyo, Backlund held the title about 6 years.
Bruno Sammartino's reign back about 20 years earlier lasted from 1963-1971, IIRC
